With the rapid change of our world’s climate, one should be more mindful of his/her own actions every day. As students, the ways we can develop sustainable lifestyles are actually limited, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do simple things to contribute to the betterment of our world’s state. Every change in our lifestyles, no matter how small or big it is, is still a way to make our world a greater place. Here are a few of those methods:

1. Bring and use reusable items.

This may sound cliche, but the sooner we start and continue with this habit, the more we can help reduce the waste we produce. Items such as water bottles, utensils, and containers are some of the items we usually use everyday. Relying on to these items may be inconvenient at first, but the inconvenience it may bring will pay off someday.

2. Control water and electricity usage.

The resources we have now won’t last forever; that’s why it is important to use them properly and conserve them while we can. Refrain from excessive consumption of water and electricity. Turning off the lights and reducing water usage are simple and by doing so, you can lower your electricity and water bills and lower your carbon footprint as well.

3. Lessen buying and using single-use items.

Instead of continuing the use of single-use items, packages and in turn, encouraging the production of these single-use items and packaging, bring refillable bottles and containers instead. Single-use products such as sachets, tetra packs, candy wrappers, and many more greatly contribute to the waste that humans produce. Further usage of these products encourages companies to produce more of these, thus adding more waste. If possible, buy bigger items and items in bulk to lessen single-use packaging. You can also buy products which are already in refillable containers so you can reuse them afterward.

4. Buy and consume organic and sustainable products.

Companies such as Human Heart Nature and Messy Bessy already started to produce organic and sustainable products. These items are made safer and cleaner since it requires minimal harmful materials to be produced while still maintaining its quality, instead of products made of plastics that contain unnecessary chemicals. This is a great start to lessen wastes produced and as consumers, we can help them by purchasing their products.

5. Use social media for the good.

Social media platforms are far-reaching nowadays, and the youth should use it for the good. The youth can participate in influencing companies by writing them letters and tagging them on social media to demand better and more sustainable alternatives. They can also write petitions or letters to local and national government officials to propose policy changes.

These ways may be simple, but doing these will greatly affect the future state of our planet. //by Kyle Mararac
