Literary (Submission): To the One who Showed the Way

My dear,

Do you remember the time we managed to cross the roaring river with our hands intertwined? How we overcame the torrent of stray, violent drops of rain? Or how we trudged the terrain of rocks and avoided the boulders?

Those were difficult yet fulfilling times. We escaped with breaths barely audible and knees scraped to the maximum. But we never did surrender to the persisting call of distress or misery, for we had each other.

And for a moment, I thought with just the two of us, we can get through anything.

But then came even more horrible circumstances. Rain poured until your face wasn’t visible even though you were right there beside me. Your shadow was nothing more than a mere illusion. And our words, no matter how loud we tried, never reached the other.

An adversity led to another, then another and another, and filled both our lives to the brim with regret, doubt and sorrow.

And as every calamity ends, finally the sky became clear and the sun shone. However, when we did weather the storm, we came out defeated beyond repair. And most tragic of all, we came out with our hands and our spirits no longer in an embrace we thought was eternal.

Do not worry, I am not here to put the blame on any one of us. We were shattered, broken, mended, then made whole. We are lucky for we taught and prepared each other for something far better than what we had. So let’s not be disheartened by this seemingly cruel twist of fate.

And when the day comes that you’ll long for me as much as I did, don’t look far. On the other side, I will be smiling at you for we both made it to where we are supposed to be. We know better now…

That there is someone meant for you and the others are just the guides.

Literary (Submission): Placebo

Hopeless, I am meant to die.

No one in this world can ever cure me. Every doctor that has touched my dying soul has given up. Even I have surrendered myself.

But just when everything seemed bleak and dire, a bottle of mysterious substance was presented to me.

“Believe and you shall find. Seek and you shall be given.“ The description said.

Without any hesitation, I drank. Consumed, ingested it until it was a part of me.

Immediately, I felt different, stronger and healthier. The sickness that once plagued me seemed to be gone. I’m cured.

The world looked more colorful. The air I breathed was wind from heaven. I can dance, skip and run around. No ailment can get to me now.

But when everything seemed to be perfect, I thought of my condition before and I stopped. I doubted the powers of this strange remedy.

And then and there, I fell. I coughed. I wheezed. I clutched my chest as if my life depended on it. It’s over, it’s gone. I’m going to die, as I am destined to.

“Believe and you shall find. Seek and you shall be given.”

As I remembered the words on the bottle, I instantly regained my power. I could do all sorts of things again. It looks like, as long as I believe, I am cured.

And now, I fully understand that I am meant to live.

Or am I really?

Literary (Submission): Red

Red.
“This was the color of the world where only the two of us lived in.”

I was red the very first time we met, with my cheeks turning into that bright hue. I was flustered, to say the least, by your mere presence.

You were red. With that masculine and sturdy posture, you were the physical form of attraction and I couldn’t help myself from being drawn to you.

Red was the color of the lips you used to tell me all the things I wanted to hear. You had a way of always knowing what to say; to calm me down, to allure me, to keep me sane.

Red was the flower you gave me when we met for the third time. I realized then and there, that time doesn’t really forge strong relationships for two weeks was enough to make me want to stay with you, forever.

Red was the passion that held us together. We became inseparable after just a few months. A fast process, many say and people thought we weren’t going to last, saying that young flames burn out faster. But who were they to predict what we are going to be.

Red was the clock that told me you were slowly fading. What once was vivid crimson became dull. You were clearly tired of us yet you were somehow reluctant to say anything about it so I didn’t too.
Red was the attention I wanted you to give me. The attention you deprived me of which caused me to become someone I didn’t want to be. Someone who demanded so much of you.

Red was the color of our late night arguments. We argued because of petty reasons but they were enough for you to lash out at me. Your voice was eight times more deafening than what was possible and I absorbed every insult without complaint for I still wanted to hold on.

For you were still a masterpiece to me.

But as time passed, you were slowly stripped away of the kind of passion I originally saw in you. You became monochrome. And simply, you lacked—

Red.
Red was the color of the plate you threw my way. And the cracking of the glass woke me up.
I knew what to do. I became determined to bring you back to what you once were. To the man I fell in love with.

Red was the color I decided to decorate you with. I thought, maybe, that’d make all the fighting go away. Maybe, that would bring you back to me.

And after another round of yelling, red was the color on my hands.

I was glad, for I could hold you now in my arms without triggering conflict. I could stare at you without being shouted at. For you were just silent, serene, after I decided to paint you—

Red.

Literary (Submission): Backpack Confessions

Jansport,
Sorry I had to address you like this
You were the only one I can actually tell these to
But I really have to say it, all the things I keep inside
So please don’t doubt my words because all of these are true

Walking in school was something I dread
For each boring step was nothing remarkable
Then, I get a glimpse of even just a pair of thin straps
And there, I will smile at the sight of your name printed on the label

My heart will beat faster
In my chest, it can break free
And find its way to your front pockets
With the help of your zippers, it can never flee

If that so happens, I won’t complain
For it saves me from endless shame
And end up with your owner not feeling the same

But someday…

I hope I gain enough courage to profess all these
The heavy luggage of emotions I always wear
However, not to you, but to someone who holds you near
To the one who always carries you everywhere

Literary (Submission): The Story of Us

Let us start with you and me,
A tale of how two I’s became a we

Walking down the corridors heading to a meeting,
I had to be quick for time was fleeting,
This was not a time to tarry or be indolent,
But alas, I walked into someone, what torment!

Walking down the corridors without looking,
I didn’t even bother; I was reading,
A situation that would probably lead to an accident,
And yes, of course, I walked into someone, how excellent

It was you, my lady fair and true,
‘Twas an accident I will never rue,
For when I picked up your book and looked into your eyes,
My heart skipped a beat, you took me by surprise

It was you in that accident I never want to undo,
Out of my chest, my heart just flew,
For when you picked up my book, sparks melted the ice,
And I was falling again, I realized

You, like a statue of Greek antiquity,
Entranced me with your mesmerizing beauty,
This world painted in monochrome grisaille,
With you, became an impressionist nonpareil

The sound of your voice an enchanting melody,
Our souls and our hearts in perfect harmony,
Day by day, my feelings rose in crescendo,
Until I couldn’t keep track of my pulse’s tempo

From that point on, we’ve made so many memories,
In such a short time, we’ve created centuries

I remember our first date, officially planned,
I asked you what you wanted, your wish, my command,
You answered eating ice cream on a sidewalk would be best,
My tolerance for childishness, you did test

I remember when we roamed without aim,
“We are lost!” You did exclaim,
But it wasn’t that bad, I suppose,
For it did serve to make us more close

I remember a night beneath a starry sky,
When chilling was nature’s gusty sigh,
Each other’s warmth though kept the cold at bay,
We were together, there was nothing to say

I remember when you took my hand,
The surroundings were plain, but with you they seemed grand,
With the wind as our music, and the moon as our light,
We danced until the end of the night

I remember when you asked for help,
With schoolwork worthy of a yelp,
When you finally understood it all,
The look upon your face enthralled

I remember when I could not solve equations,
Because the world was full of evil distractions,
I turned to you and you taught me what you knew,
And to days when I’m confused I bid adieu

It feels like a dream, our being together,
Let me never awake from this sweet slumber,
You woke up my heart from its listless repose,
Thawed my whole being, from my head to my toes

Literary (Submission): Hanging

Our friendship started how friendships usually start these days—through the internet.

You messaged me with a simple question about school and, as a good student, I answered back as best as I can. After that, we said our goodbyes. I felt nothing about you at that time. To me, you were just another student in the sea of faces at school.

I thought we were never going to speak to each other again so I never gave you another glance. But then, you befriended me. You chatted with me constantly. We spoke about a lot of things other than school. I got to know you for the person you are deep inside. I used to think you were this egotistical, big-headed guy but through chatting frequently and texting until midnight, I learned you were more than that.

I used to lie to my parents that I was sleeping but actually I was talking to you. You made me laugh. You made me want to hit my head against the wall. You made me want to jump higher than the moon, higher than the furthest star in the furthest galaxy. You made me feel emotions that I never felt before. Perhaps I can call this infatuation and for a time, I was happy with this setup.

But, of course, when it comes to these sorts of things, someone was bound to get hurt. In our case, it was me.

We were fine one night and then you just stopped talking to me. You never sent me a message or chatted with me anymore. I felt like someone who was left on the side of the road. You acted like I don’t even exist. At school, you don’t look at me or even acknowledge my presence. I did not know what to do. I don’t know if I should text you first or give you the space I thought you needed.

I guess it’s safe to say that my infatuation was a little deeper than the first time I realized I liked you. But I understand. Maybe to you I was just a girl who longed for your attention; just a girl who thought that she was someone special. Maybe I was. Maybe I still am.

But the way you treated me, the way you conversed with me and especially the way you made me feel, I swear with all my heart, it was different. Clearly, however, it was only I who felt that way.

Now, after so many months, here I am.

I am still hung up on you.

I still wish things would go back to the way they used to be.

I still like you the way I did before.

Even though, I know you already like somebody else.
