Feature: Midnight

We all know the story of the girl who left the ball before midnight, fit the glass slipper, and lived happily ever after. In the live-action Disney movie Cinderella, the fairytale returns to the big screen remastered in a flurry of lights and colors. The new Cinderella is filled with beautiful scenery dresses that is sure to catch the eye of its audience.

In the movie, the prevailing themes are courage and kindness. Ella’s mother advises her to “Have courage, and be kind,” words that Ella lives by day-by-day.

Grades 8 & 9 perform in culminating activities

Batches 2019 and 2018 staged the last culminating activities of AY 2014-2105 at the UPIS Auditorium last March 20 and 25 as their final requirement for Music 8 and Filipino 9, respectively.

Each Grade 8 section performed a medley of songs of the Afro-American and Gospel genre. 8-Butterfly won 1st place with their rendition of “I Will Follow Him” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”

Meanwhile, Grade 9 performed the plays they prepared based on Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere.

The award for Best Play was given to 9-Silver, while the individual awards were given to David de Layola of 9-Gold (Best Actor as Elias) and Marianne Sasing of 9-Iron (Best Actress as Sisa).

Mahigit 500 estudyante, kumuha ng Grade 7 Admissions Test

Limang daan at pitumput dalawang (572) mag-aaral mula sa iba’t ibang paaralan ang kumuha ng UPIS Grade 7 Admissions Test noong Marso 7, 2015.

Kasama nilang kumuha ng GAT ang 95 pang homegrown ng UPIS. Mula sa 572 na estudyanteng hindi nag-elementarya sa UPIS, 15 lamang ang makakapasok bilang lateral sa susunod na pang-akademikong taon 2015-2016. Hindi pa kasama rito ang 10 varsity players na kukunin ng paaralan para sa nabanggit na akademikong taon.

Samantala, ang Kindergarten Admissions Test (KAT) ay gaganapin sa darating na Abril 6-10, 13-15. / ni Raine Abaya

Health and PE week, ipinagdiwang

Idinaos ng UPIS Health and P.E. Department ang kanilang taunang Health and P.E. week noong Pebrero 10-13.

Pormal na sinimulan ang Health and P.E. week sa pamamagitan ng isang joint flag ceremony ng UPIS 3-6 at 7-10 kung saan kinilala ang bawat varsity team ng UPIS. Binigyan din sila ng pagkakataon upang makapaghikayat ng mga bagong miyembro.

Sa hapon ng parehong araw, isang Zumba Session na ginanap sa Basketball Court ang dinaluhan ng mga Varsity members at ibang mga estudyante. Ito ang nagsilbing fundraising activity ng departamento upang tulungan ang dating guro na si Prof. Zalamea.

Noong ika-11 naman ng Pebrero ay nagkaroon ng Nutrition Talk para sa mga guro at staff na pinangunahan ng nutritionist at dietititan na si Prof. Manalo.

Isinagawa naman noong ika-13 ng Pebrero ang Varsity Night, na siyang nagsilbing pagtatapos sa buong linggong pagdiriwang. Ito ay dinaluhan ng mga Varsity Members at ng kanilang mga Coach. Ang gabing ito ay kinatampukan ng talumpati ng mga panauhing tagapagsalita, sina Diego Dario, dating miyembro ng UPIS Junior Maroons, at Jaime Mejia, dating Team Captain ng UPIS Junior Track and Field Team. Feature: Fire is Catching: Mockingjay Pt. 1

dys•to•pi•a ( /disˈtōpēə/ ) – noun. an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.

It has been an ongoing fad in literature and movies to set a dystopian world as the premises for such. Opposite to its counterpart utopia, dystopia is often shown as a post-apocalyptic world, with strict rules and a totalitarian government. This theme in literature and popular culture has been going on since the 18th century, but is most notable in recent years, especially with the publication of the famed trilogy, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. Books tackling the same dystopian theme are slowly being made into movies one-by-one, but The Hunger Games kickstarted them all, and just last November 20, 2014, the second to the last movie in the franchise, Mockingjay Pt. 1, premiered in cinemas nationwide.

In the movie, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) tackles the obstacles thrown at her after escaping the 75th Hunger Games, then she copes with life at District 13 while making the choice on whether or not to be the face of the propaganda.

Mockingjay Pt. 1 shows us that everyone can make a difference. People are not invincible, and the people we thought to be perfect may be harboring similar problems as us. Katniss does not fail in showing us that she is the perfect heroine for this series, that she is strong, independent, brave, and most of all, true to her self.

“No ID, No Entry” policy, strictly enforced

Due to recent reports of students losing their belongings, UPIS started implementing the No ID, No Entry policy last November 18.

A section of the UPIS student handbook states that the ID is part of the uniform and should be displayed at all times. It must be officially countersigned by the Librarian. The security guard at the gate is given the authority to refuse entry of students not wearing an ID.

This policy is being implemented to make sure that only UPIS students are able to enter the school’s premises.

UPIS celebrates Wonderland in CA EMA Week 2014

Students, teachers, and staff found fantasy in reality in the CA English, Music, and Art (CA EMA) week festivities held last November 18-21.

Dubbed Wonderland: Finding Fantasy in Reality, the week-long celebration was formally opened on November 18 with Skits of Freenia, a presentation by the English Club to introduce Alice in Wonderland which is the inspiration for this year’s theme.

It concluded with the much-awaited Literally Literary Day (LLD) held on November 20. Students dressed up as characters from various literary works and presented spiels in English class. Each section chose two representatives to compete in the LLD contest later that afternoon.

Angelia Albao of 7-Mars who dressed up as Queen Susan of Narnia, Wenona Catubig of 8-Dragonfly who portrayed an exorcised girl, Marianne Sasing of 9-Iron as Elphaba of Wicked, and Miguei Abogado of 10-Lauan as Thor were crowned as winners of the competition.

Other CA EMA Week activities were DEAR Day, Poem-Letter Exchange, and Spelling Bee.

The best spellers from each grade level competed in teams last November 21. The team of Macky Barrientos (10-Acacia), Adrian Bornilla (9-Silver), Ezra Bustamante (8-Butterfly), and James Tolosa (7-Saturn) won the championship in the tiebreaker round versus the team of Katreena Nulud (10-Molave), Chesca Santiago (9-Gold), Craig Aquino (8-Dragonfly), and JP Coronado (7-Venus).


The faculty and staff also took part in the CA EMA Week activities by showcasing their talents in the 7th installment of Rhyme, Rhythm, and Reason also held on November 21. / by Raine Abaya and Julou Tirol
