Literary(Submission): Alaala

9/29/2017 09:32:00 PM Media Center 1 Comments

Literary(Submission): Wallet Size

9/29/2017 09:27:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Nagsimula ang pagtingin sa’yo.
Ako ay napapangiti
Kapag nakikita ko ang mukha mo.
Kaya agad kong pinrint
Para mailagay sa wallet ko.

Nang sunod tayong magkita,
Napansin mo ang ating litrato.
Naka-laminate at nakalagay sa wallet ko.
Hindi ko alam ang gagawin
Kaya akin na lang ipinakita
At nilunok ang aking kaba.

Handa akong magpaliwanag
Dahil sa takot na ikaw ay magalit.
Ngunit bago pa ako magsalita,
Iyo ring ipinakita
Ang isang litratong maparehas ng sa akin.

Hindi man tayo magsalita
Alam natin ang ibig sabihin
Ng mga litratong itinago natin.
Hindi man tayo umimik,
Alam na natin ang ibig sabihin.
Ang kahulugan ng ating pagtingin,
Ang simula ng isang kwentong,
Nagmula sa isang litrato.

Naalala ko pa ‘yung una nating litrato
Nag-aalangan pa ako
Dahil sa takot na baka malaman mo
Tinabihan kita at sinabing “Selfie!”
Nagulat ako nang tumingin ka sa camera,
Sabay ngiti.

Buong gabi kong tinitignan
Dahil dito mukhang tayo.

Nang sunod tayong magkita,
May napansin akong kakaiba.

Literary (Submission): Nasaan?

9/29/2017 09:20:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Ha? Saan?
. . .

Puro kayo sambit

Waking up at ease
With fresh eyes
And a rested mind
Has now become a rarity

On these unusual days
When the sunlight
Calmly hits my face,
When all else is quiet
Save for the humming of
My merry fleeting thoughts

I choose to photograph
And lock these days
In my memory

I know full well
That these are but passing bouts –
Quick, evanescent
A taste of happy amidst a palette
Of a sullen, mundane life

So might as well remember
That I, too, am capable
Of happiness and content

Might as well photograph
The sights, sounds, feelings
Everything
That once again
Has made me feel
Alive and beating.

Now you get why I never photographed you.

I don't know how to take a good picture
I don't know how to balance white light
I don't know how to adjust the shutter speed
Nor to change the aperture when used at night
I don't know what subjects I could use
I don't know what angles might work
I don't know how to reduce noise

Because, simply,

I am nothing
But a pretentious child
With a camera dangling on my neck
Using it as an instrument
To convey my superiority
To everyone I meet
Although I may look stupid
When I casually use it
I just want to let people know
That I have an expensive camera

But I don't know how
To use it

Mahirap man ang ganitong sitwasyon, sa simpleng gamit na taglay, nagagawa kong mabuhay;

At wala akong nasambit kundi

‘Sandali,’
Pinagmamasdan ko ang papalubog na sandali
Sumisilay sa dulo ng liwanag,
Nagbabakasakali, nagbabakasakali

At bukas, makalawa

I have captured stills that are arbitrary
Photos taken from different sceneries

A camera with wasted films;

A sun nearing dusk;

A simple bracelet;

A flower that has withered;

A coffee turned cold;

A book read a hundred times;

In wondering what these photos missed,
I have found the missing piece

A book read a hundred times
With the hope that our chapter never ends

A coffee turned cold
Yet the warmth of your love remained

A flower that withered;
Yet you made me bloom

A simple bracelet
Which binds us together

A sun nearing dusk
And the dawning of our dance

A camera with wasted films
Which still captured these cherished memories

Arbitrary stills and shots devoid of color
You are the subject I have been searching for

The room was dark and cold. Lights were turned off, A/C’s boosted to max. Only the light from my laptop illuminated the vast darkness of the room. Papers were scattered everywhere, wildlife photographs were laid on my bed, a laptop and a camera were on my desk along with circular coffee stains on the sheets. For hours, I’ve been staring at my screen as I browse through the projects I’ve done in the past. A couple of clicks and drags, I stumbled upon a photo series that was rather striking.

Shot 1 – Fawn staring straight into the camera: It was a white-tailed deer left alone by its mother. From my experience, it was a male fawn. He stood there—they tend to not leave where they were left, it was an instinct. I grabbed the chance, placed my eye against the viewfinder, adjusted the lens, and took shots of the fawn. His eyes were glistening of innocence—just like how a young fawn should act. Was he scared? Was he oblivious to my presence? I wonder. Either way, it was a good shot.

Shot 2 – Fawn feeds on leaves: I decided to follow this fawn, maybe until he grows up to be a full-grown deer. Upon reviewing the previous photos, I found him quite interesting—a photogenic subject. This time, the fawn along with his mother made their way toward these low hanging branches. I followed until they halted, saw them reach for the leaves and some fruits, and chew on them. Natural scenery. I grabbed on to my camera and took photos. Normal, boring, but it was naturally executed—just shows how these animals live their lives.

Shot 3 – Fawn with herd: Days passed, I learned that these two were a part of a large herd—a large family. They were varied—two with huge antlers, some with bright tan fur, another with long legs, and there was the fawn with its notable white spots. One with huge antlers dropped a branch, teeming with fruits, from the grip of its teeth. Once dropped, the others gathered around to feed on what’s brought to the herd. Maintaining my distance, I took shots. Family—it was what the photo was telling, that even these creatures have their kind to treat as family.

Shot 4 – Fawn trots during sunset: The fawn grew up, to the point that he was lively trotting on the wide prairie. It was afternoon, the sun was setting. He trotted, jumped, repeatedly. I’ve never seen him felt so alive other than that time. Not a second was wasted, I heightened the shutter speed, and took a couple of shots. It was an outstanding photo of a leaping deer creating a silhouette behind the setting sun. The energy, the joy, the happiness, I felt them upon viewing the photo—he was happy that he was alive.

Shot 5 – Fawn shot dead: It has been months since the last time I took a photograph of the deer. As I made my way towards their location, I heard a gunshot from afar—I rushed to the scene. Dead, he was shot dead. Blood was spreading on the forest ground as the herd he was with circled around him. I felt the despair, the melancholy, the misery these creatures felt—they were letting out loud whines. He was hunted down. But for what reason? For bounty? For praise? I wasn’t able to comprehend. He was harmless, he did nothing to these humans, he lived normally, he had a family, he loved his life, he was not capable of fighting back—for goodness sake, he was a young one. I took the last photograph, and left with a heavy heart.
I went back to my car, threw my camera onto the backseat, and let out a big sigh. As I held the wheel, I wondered, what if humans suffer the same fate as these poor creatures? What if we are treated the same? What if we, humans, are the ones ruthlessly killed for the sake of cheap cash and meager praise?

And that was when I remembered, we already are.

Nakasuot ako ng damit na itim,
Nagtatago sa dilim,
At sinusundan ng tingin
Ang isang lalaking agaw-pansin

Patagong sinusundan
Tahimik na minamatiyagan
Ang lalaking may angking kakisigan
At may taglay pang ka-gwapuhan

Araw-araw sinusundan
Gabi-gabing sinusulyapan
Ako’y buwis-buhay na nagtatago sa damuhan
Makuhaan lang ng siya magandang larawan

Dapat tama ang tiyempo
Dapat sakto ang anggulo
Dapat ang larawang makukuha ko,
Papasa sa mata ng mga hurado

Kinabukasan dinala ‘to sa presinto,
Agad sinuri ang aking mga litrato
At dito nga nakumpirma
Na isa pala siyang mandirigma

Once upon a more certain time,
People would hear an ancient chime
Listen well, children past their prime
To Time’s spectacular nursery rhyme

An old, old, old, wise man said
“Rise, you fool child, from your bed.
To stay and mope here instead,
You’re better off dead!”

“Do you know of the town called Boulderhead?”
The child confused, he shakes his head
The man then would tell of the town aforesaid
That would fill the likes of you with dread

The town did look like any town
But it was horrible, hands down
The people, were horrible, I’d vote them down
If this was Facebook, I’d give them a frown

See the citizens of all shapes and sizes
But all was the same, lazy enterprises
There was no such word as exercises
The stores, full of bed, chair, and bench franchises

Some did stand whenever they could
But what they do, they never do good
They talk with foul tongues, I wish they were wood
To cut them off, if you think you should

Some did try to do their best
But children you see, life is a long quest
Some try, and try, and stop from the stress
They love the start and forget the rest

They love to love, and love they did
Couples would relax in parks and hid
They’d talk of wonders and dreams they’d build
But when all is done, they’ll leave when they’re not thrilled

When the butterflies are gone, all is lost
Begin again, slowly hearts would frost
The town, sadly, the line they crossed
Actions have consequences, always a cost

They slept from the start, they’ll sleep forever
Their snores would thrum, hollow terror
Progress, advancement, change; never
They will never feel the touch of life; together

Stone will erode, metal will rust
Give it some Time, all will be dust
In the crumble and collapse, we trust
All will perish with the gust

A warning to those who listened and read
Let the wise man’s word be spread
Time’s clock ticks, go where no one has tread
Lest we all become like foolish Boulderhead

It's a bit out of place, my face
It seems like it's looking at nothing
While yours is captured perfectly, honestly
No rule of thirds needed, you're the subject

I try my best to look okay, at least
While you look gorgeous, as always
I'm doing everything I can to look just as good
But I'm getting frustrated, it's no use!

I'm slightly off-angle and a bit over-exposed
Or my face is really just nothing compared to yours
Yours has its own filter and literally glows
I can't find a perfect picture with you anymore

It's out of place because it is
It's glued slightly to the left
It's a cut-out of my face
Placed on top of your man's

I can't look okay with you
If you never were with me
For there wasn't ever a picture of us
Nor there ever will be

Isa, Dalawa, Tatlo
Sabay ngiti. Tingin ay deretso.

Sinimulan ang pagkuha ng larawan,
Sa dalawang magkasintahan.
Patuloy ang pagkuha
ibat-ibang anggulo,

Upang makahinga, Upang makalaya,

Na pilit man kalimutan,

Ever since I was born
We have been together
Under one roof
And have forged a relationship
Only we can understand

From New Year ‘til Christmas
365 days a year for 11 years
We have been through a lot
And like the back of my hand
I know you so well

We both share the same food
You loved KFC chicken
As much as I loved it too
And you added some macaroni salad
While I liked mine with mashed potato

At every family gathering
Or any important event
Pictures of us all were taken
And we’d both be in the photograph
Yet we’d always be far apart

You felt something bad
Going on in your stomach
We took you to the hospital
And I was there, it was devastating
Seeing you in pain

The whole family visited
Pictures with you they wanted
So I took all of them
And satisfying it was to see you
Smile in every photo I took

But it was time you gave in
Your will was strong as always
But your body had enough of the pain
And it was time for you to rest in peace
For you had a life well-lived

I was with you until your last breath
All the sad and happy moments we had
I will keep in my soul for a lifetime
And yet I would trade any of those memories
Just to have a photo with you, Grandma

To my love,

Happy 21st birthday! My dear, I wish you the best. Be brave in facing the adult world, but don’t forget what it’s like to be a child.

These are some memories I kept, preserved in photographs, that I wanted you to treasure as they fade through time. Cherish these bits and pieces of your life and reminisce the years of growing up because you’ll never be able to go back in time to experience them again.

As a toddler, you loved to explore your surroundings, and with the help of these tiny shoes, you learned how to walk and run. You loved to roam in the garden and pick up random things like pebbles, dry leaves, and fallen flower buds. I hope that you’ll never lose the wonder to discover new things.

Crayons, brushes, and paints were your best friends in preschool. You, like your hands, were always covered with the colors of the rainbow. You would smudge paint on the floor, on the walls, and even on your face. May you continue to give color to the things around you!

Interesting facts excited you as you grew older. You would read almanacs and books of world records. You would share them over the dinner table with wide eyes filled with enthusiasm. Keep that eagerness to learn, son, it’s important in life.

When you finally became a teen, with pimples and all, you became very interested in chess, unlike your classmates who were fond of basketball and videogames. You said that you wanted to exercise your mind and be a great strategist. I was delighted to hear that you had a goal in life. I pray that you’ll work hard to achieve it.

When you were a young man, you bought a wrist watch all on your own. It’s great that you’re mindful of time, something you should always be. For time is like a gust of wind, gone in a wink of an eye.

Growing up is inevitable, dear. Our life is about moving forward. Etch these in your heart and keep it in your mind. I may be gone already as you accept this letter, but always remember that I am with you in spirit. I love you forever.

Mom

Dear Mr. Photographer,

Nagmamahal,

Ang nag-iisa mong modelo

In life, it’s a fact that everyone is born into different lives
Everyone gets different material things and opportunities
That’s why
Not everyone has the same lens to look through life
Some have toy cameras, some have real, expensive ones
But what you have is not important
What matters is that you make the most out of it
And create your path to something better

Shutter count
A lot of opportunities will come and go
And sometimes, we take them for granted
For we think the same opportunity will come again
But not all chances lead us to the picture we want
We must only take the right ones and hope for a beautiful picture
Eventually, we will reach our limits
And will no longer be able to take pictures
Most people think that they lived life fully for they took every opportunity
But others regret the time they wasted
And wish that they spent it on more important things

ISO
There will come a time in our lives
When we are faced with darkness
Our immediate response may be
To take in some more light
But it is not always advised
For it decreases the quality of the scene
Instead, we need to become patient
And wait a little more
For the natural light to come into our lives
And it will come to us,
If we’re open enough to let it

Focus

Not everyone has the same eye for things
It’s up to you what to give attention to
You may give emphasis on the subject
And blur out the unnecessary
What’s important is you set your priorities straight
And focus on the things that will lead you
To your desired picture

Picture Perfect

There is no perfect picture
What is beautiful to one, may not be to the other
In taking every picture,
You decide the mixing and matching
Of different elements
And through experience
You’ll eventually have your own recipe
Your own technique
It may not be perfect, like what you expected
But that is life
The important thing is you learn something new
With each picture you take

You brought me to such great heights.
And for a moment, I believed
That I was as picturesque
As you imagined me to be

But I will come down
From this pedestal
On my own accord

I can’t blame you
For being disappointed
Even I would choose
To look away

But this is who I am
I won’t be picture-perfect
I won’t be worth the shot

By all means,
Take your leave
And I will find solace
In admitting defeat

Smallest lies
Littlest hopes
Unknown talents

He collected these photos
And tried to know
Each and every single detail
                every single part
                every single design
                every single element
of everyone’s faces
for he believes
that these have value
So he memorized them

But then one day
He saw a mirror
He looked at it
And he cried

From that moment he knew
He forgot that his
Smiles, looks, tears, laughs, fears, lies, hopes, talents
Have value, too

From that moment I knew
That being behind the lenses
Took away
The love I once had for myself

Ako,
Ako na laging dala ang aking cellphone
Kahit saan, kahit kailan.
Kailangan full ang battery
Kailangan may sapat na memory
Lahat ng gagawin, kailangan mala-documentary

Ikaw,
Ikaw na lagi kong kasama
Kahit saan, kahit kailan. Go na go ka.
