13est defends Power Dance title

Bow down to the 13EST. Batch 2013 breezed through an exciting routine
during the annual Power Dance competition to get first place.
UPIS Batch 2013, popularly known as 13est, showcased a cool, colorful, and creative interpretation of Bacolod’s Masskara Festival to win their second straight title in the annual Power Dance competition last December 2012.

Drawing on the ISKULtura theme for UPIS Week 2012, the batch field demo competition, dubbed UPISAYAJUAN, was inspired by Philippines festivals.

Each batch rigorously prepared and rehearsed an 8-minute routine in 2-3 weeks. Driven by batch spirit and healthy competition, everyone worked their hardest in practices after classes and weekends.

Batch 2013 admitted to having trouble in getting the routine done properly and making it all go together. There were a lot of incidents of clashing ideas but despite these, the batch pulled it off during performance day where the strength of their camaraderie and unity set aside all their differences turning it into their most successful and fulfilling performance yet.

Batch 2015 also wowed the crowd with their Ati-atihan-inspired routine, coming in second, while Batch 2014 showed off their dancing skills for third.

Batch 2013 also won Best in Costume for their fiery garments and masks while Batch 2014 won Best Cheer for their catchy tune. ● Rya Ducusin, Bianca Pio

New's: UPISDA apprehends student violator

A student was issued a transparent orange slip by the UPIS Development Authority (UPISDA), after violating the ‘Keep of the Grass’ law at the quadrangle last September 27.

Student α was caught red-handed at the scene of the crime. He was walking around the ‘Keep of the Grass’ sign when he was interrupted by student Ɵ who was passing by the office.

Student Ɵ  immediately reported his violation to the enforcer who promptly blew his whistle. The moment student α heard it, he started to shout loudly, run very fast, and at times, roll all over the quadrangle.

The UPISDA enforcers were appalled with his behavior so they gave him the transparent orange slip that recorded his violations: over-speeding, noise-making, and blatant disregard for the 'Keep of the Grass' sign.

Because of three subsequent violations, Student α's ID was confiscated. To be able to get it back, he will be have to attend a seminar on why rules and regulations should not be broken. ● by Benjo Hernandez, Patricia Lim, and Bianca Pio

Doronila, 1 of 5 outstanding KAB scouts in NCR

Paolo Doronila of grade 3-Dagat ranked 4th in the NCR search for outstanding KAB Scouts held at the University of Makati last September 21.

According to Ms. Cha Guerrero, one of the kawan leaders, after going through the process, he was announced 3rd runner-up and was also awarded Best in Formal Attire. Doronila competed against 12 other scouts.

Gelera brings home Math Wiz title

Christian Philip Gelera of 6-Garnet was crowned the 2012 Little Math Wizard during the 3rd Region-wide Search for the Little Math Wizard held at the UP Math Building last September 15.

Gelera bested all his competitors in the four-round competition, making him the over-all champion.

Nathan Arthur Banatao, Zeidrich Monares, John Henry Marquez, Sean Albert Gelera and Jastin Cedric Cruz also joined the grade 5 level but only Banatao, Monares and Marquez qualified for the semi-final round.

This is a familiar expression for anime geeks or otakus. It can be heard and read in animes and mangas, particularly in maid cafes.

Maid cafes, which originated in Japan, have been a popular event for many anime fanatics. From the word itself, maid cafes are places where people could eat and hang out with maids and butlers as their waiter.

Last September 13, the UP Anime and Manga Enthusiasts (UP AME) held their yearly AME week which included their very own Maid and Butler Cafe at the Vargas Hall.

The Amadare Cafe offers a variety of maids and butlers that will serve and entertain you. At each table, one butler or maid is assigned to wait on customers for 20 minutes.

There are different types of maids and butlers: the refined, the tsundere, and the imouto or otouto. The customers will choose one type and that maid or butler will serve them according to the personality that the customers request.

The first, which is the refined maid or butler, is a calm, smart and professional-looking type. The second, which is the tsundere maid or butler, is a snobbish hard-to-get type. The last, which is the imouto or otouto maid or butler, is a little sister or little brother type. Some examples of the butlers you can choose from are 4chan, Sean, Larc, Nigel and Gina, who is a crossdresser.

The Amadare Cafe also has sets of meals to choose from - some of which are full course while some are snacks. One of the meals they have is the "Signal No. 4" which consists of nachos as appetizer, two onigiris or rice balls as main course, a choice of smores or candied orange with cake as dessert and orange juice for drinks. They also have the "Rainbow Set" which is a "merienda" set that offers smores or candied orange with cake and a cold drink.

We commend the Amadare Cafe for the food and service that are closely similar to the ones in Japan.

In the previous years, the UP AME held their AME week during the second semester but they moved it to the first semester to give way to their annual grand event to be held in February 2013.

UPIS seniors attend Youth Congress

Six grade 10 students were invited to participate in the National Youth Congress held at the UP Asian Center last September 1.

Arvy Mena, Rendelle Rafin, CJ Hernandez, Zena del Mundo, Christine Prieto, and Sam Llaguno attended the National Youth Congress which seeks to encourage students to learn more about the field of economics and inform them about what is happening in our society.

This year’s theme was “Pedalling towards Prosperity: The Pursuit for Progressive Development.”

UPIS tops PSO elims

Two UPIS teams qualified for the final round of the Philippine Science Olympiad 2012 after topping the ranks in the elimination round held last September 8 at the Angelicum College.

The Philippine Science Olympiad is organized by the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs. It is divided into Bracket I (Elementary) and Bracket II (High school).

The UPIS students who participated in Bracket I were Jarod De Luna, Henry Marquez and Bertrand Diola. Their team was able to place in the top 20 for national level and top 3 for NCR level. As for the UPIS participants in Bracket II, seniors Mariel de Luna, Zena del Mundo, and Christine Prieto were able to place in the top 20 for National level and top 2 for NCR level.

The Olympiad quiz bee is an exam taken individually by each student. The scores they got from the test were added to the scores of their group mates, and were ranked according to the total score of the students in each school.

Banatao, Marquez win in Singapore math competition

Nathan Arthur Banatao and John Henry Marquez from grade 5-Arayat won gold and silver medals, respectively, in the 8th International Mathematics Contest held in Singapore last August 4.

They trained with the Mathematics Trainers Guild in preparation for the competition and competed against foreign students, all of whom are in their age group.

Umiiyak na kaluluwa. Sumisigaw na mga bata. Lumulutang na mga paa.

Ito ang madalas naikukwento kaugnay ng UPIS basement. Waring isa na itong abandunadong lugar. Ngunit, ano nga ba ang naging gamit ng basement bago ito naging paksa para sa istoryang pangkatatakutan ng mga estudyante ng UPIS?

Alam niyo ba na ang basement ay naging tambayan ng mga mag-aaral ng UPIS? Ang bawat batch ay may kani-kanilang pwesto sa basement upang maging tambayan. Ngunit bago makapasok o makaalis, ang bawat estudyante ay kailangan pumirma sa isang logbook.

Mayroon ditong 300 na lockers. Bago makakuha ng sariling locker, kailangan munang punan ng isang estudyante ang isang form na nagsasabi ng rason ng pagkuha nito. Nakalaan ang isang daang lockers para sa mga varsity players. Aaprubahan ito ng Student Association saka magbabayad ng P5 hanggang P15 bawat semester.

Matatagpuan din dito ang “Manet’s Small Canteen” na katulad ng kay Aling Norms ngayon. Nagbalak rin silang magtayo ng “mini bookstore” kung saan maaaring makabili ang mga estudyante na kanilang mga materyales.

Ginawa ang mga ito upang magkaroon ng seguridad ang mga estudyante at maiwasan ang nakawan ng mga gamit. Dahil din dito, nagkakasama-sama ang mga mag-aaral ng UPIS.

Ngunit dahil madaling bahain at panirahan ng mga ahas at iba pang mga peste, kinailangan itong ipasara.

Hindi lang mga multo at ligaw na kaluluwa ang namamahay sa basement. Minsan din tong naging tirahan ng mga buhay na buhay at masasayang mga estudyante. Hindi man ito napupuntahan sa ngayon, nakadagdag naman ito sa ibang kuwentong UPIS. ● nina Sandy de la Paz, Hannah Garay, at Bianca Pio

UP Cherubim and Seraphim holds auditions

The UP Cherubim and Seraphim, the university’s official children’s choir, held auditions last July 12 and 19 at the UPIS High school Music Room.

Dr. Elena Rivera-Mirano, Dean of the College of Arts and Letters and conductor of the choir, watched 23 UPIS students from grades 3-6 show their singing talent and musical ability in the audition that consists of three parts—singing a song of their choice, vocalization, and rhythmic clapping.

Dr. Mirano will send out letters stating their acceptance as apprentices in the group.

Everyday, students pass by this solid masterpiece yet no one has ever really stopped and pondered about the history of one of UPIS' most marvelous landmarks. "The Prayer" or Rock Man as it is more popularly known, has been an icon in our school for many years.

It is made of adobe depicting three men in very uncomfortable and awkward positions symbolizing strength, will, and emotion that every UPIS student should embody.

Sad as it may seem, UPIS students often take this sculpture for granted. Some even sit on it, deposit their bags beside it or vandalize its surface. What they do not know is that this sculpture was created by famous sculptor Ildefonso Marcelo, pupil of the National Artist Napoleon Abueva, in the 1960s. Marcelo, who is also a UP Preparatory School alumnus, also carved the twin sculptures "Captivity" and "Contemplation" which can be seen along the University Avenue.

The Rock Man is not just any lump of cold rock in front of the high school library. It holds a deeper meaning and was almost compared to a kneeling version of the Oblation. FA ready for first quarter

The Freshmen Association (FA) has just finalized their calendar of activities for the first quarter of AY 2012-2013.

According to Ms. Jean Sales, Grade 7 level coordinator, they plan to conduct a book drive which will also double as a fundraising activity for their upcoming outreach program. They also have a monthly batch assembly dubbed “Thank God It’s Tuesday” or TGIT.

The FA also prepared a batch review two weeks prior to the First Periodic Test on August 9 and 10. There is also a batch team-building activity called “Aftershock” which aims to alleviate the pressure accumulated during the exams.
