UPIS Table Tennis outsmashed in UAAP

UPIS struggled in the first two days of table tennis competition held at the Blue Eagle Gym last September 22-23 and 29-30.

UPIS tried to bounce back in the third and fourth day as respective wins from freshman James Ecito and juniors Bryan Gutierez, and Joseph Manal boosted their chances.

The team ended at 7th place with a 2-42 record.

They look to redeem glory next year with a virtually intact line up as no member of the team will be graduating. ● by Trizia Badong, Juanito Gregorio, and Dara Lilang

Izportz: Volleyball sa damuhan, nauwi sa one-on-one

Dalawang koponan mula sa grado 7 ang nagtuos sa Volleyball noong Setyembre 27 sa ganap na ika-2:45 ng hapon sa UPIS Quadrangle.

Kahit na sinabing "Keep off the Grass," hindi natinag ang mga kalahok ng Team Bacon na sina Ken Cabugwang, Caila Cadiz, Carlos Laderas at Joev Guevarra at ng Team RefCake na sina Maverick Abac, Julia Reyes, Gabriel Brian at Aaron Feliciano.

Nag-iisang binibitbit ng palumpalong laro ni Cadiz ang kanyang koponan ngunit pinuputol lamang ni Brian ang mga palo mula sa Team Bacon.

Naging sobra-sobra-sobrang dikit ang laban ngunit dahil handang isubsob ni Laderas ang kanang mukha sa putikan makuha lamang ang bola, umangat ang depensa ng Team Bacon.

Unti-unting nawalan ng gana ang dalawang koponan dahil kahit anong gawin nila ay walang nananalo sapagkat walang nagbibilang ng puntos.

Sa huli, nag-one-on-one na lamang sina Cadiz at Brian kung saan nanalo ang huli by unanimous decision dahil lamang na lamang siya sa depensa. ● nina Trizia Badong, Dara Lilang

UPIS varsity teams compete in Milo Little Olympics

The UPIS Varsity Swimming Team (VST) and Girls’ Volleyball Team competed in the Milo Little Olympics held last September 1–2 in Marikina City.

Three swimmers went home with medals from various events in the competition. Sophomore Pricila Aquino won gold medals in the 800m freestyle and 200m individual medley, and silver medals in the 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke, and 400m freestyle events. Senior Joy Rodgers won golds in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, while Jeremiah Esguerra won a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke.

Meanwhile, the UPIS Girls' Volleyball team lost to Rich Golden Shower Montessori School, 2 sets to none.

Rich Golden Shower was able to catch up on a deuce two in the first set. It took the biggest lead on the 2nd set, scoring 5-13. Great services from Trizia Badong trimmed the lead but their opponents held on to win, 23-25. ● by Miguel Flores and Nina Leis

Buwan ng Wika at Kasaysayan, muling binuksan

Noong Agosto 22, 2012, opisyal na binuksan ang Buwan ng Wika sa UPIS sa pangunguna ng Kilusang Araling Panlipunan, Sangguniang Pangwika at Future Homemakers Club.

Nagsimula ang programa sa bating panimula galing sa prinsipal na si Dr. Ronaldo San Jose. Nagkaroon din ng isang AV presentation at pagtatanghal mula sa ilang piling mag-aaral mula sa grado 3-6 bilang pagpaparangal sa ating mga bayani.

Magkakaroon ng iba’t ibang paligsahan ang UPIS gaya ng UPIS Master Chef, Rampang Pinoy at paligsahan sa pagitan ng mga seksyon. ● nina Camille Babaran, Trizia Badong, at Rya Ducusin

UPIS VST finishes 2nd in all-star swimming competition

The UPIS Varsity Swimming Team (VST) won 2nd place over-all in the high school division of the All-Star Swimming Competition last August 11 and 12 in the Rizal Sports Complex.

The team won a total of 7 gold medals--4 golds for sophomore Pricila Aquino in the 400m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley and 50m butterfly. She was also named one of the over-all MVPs. Senior Joy Rodgers added 3 more to the loot in her 50m, 100m, and 200m breast stroke events.

Jeremiah Esguerra bagged a silver medal in his 100m breast stroke event while Mary Llorente won 2 bronzes in 50m and 200m breast stroke.

Meanwhile, the UP Varsity Swimming Team was also declared as the over-all champions in the college division of the said competition.

SciSoc joins environmental awareness workshop

The members of the UPIS Science Society (SciSoc) attended a workshop which aims to promote environmental awareness and teach citizens the importance of water to the community.

The Lakbayan tour conducted by Manila Water and headed by Ms. Heidi de Maisip included an on-site visit to the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Compound, La Mesa Dam, and UP Sewage Treatment Plant.

They also attended a climate change seminar sponsored by the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines at the UPIS 7-10 AVR. Activities, lectures and discussions were also given to help the students be more aware of global warming. ● by Rya Ducusin, Camille Babaran, and Trizia Badong

UP at UPIS Pep Rally, idinaos

Nagtipon-tipon ang mga atleta ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas upang maki-isa sa Pep Rally na isinagawa sa UP Film institute noong Hulyo 9, 2012 sa ganap na ika-7 ng gabi.

Bilang panimula, nagbigay ng mensahe para sa mga atleta si Prof. Ariel Juilano, Athletic Director ng UP College of Human Kinetics (UP CHK).

Isa-isang ipinakilala ang mga sports teams ng UP at nagkaroon din ng mga pampasiglang bilang mula sa UP Filipiniana Dance Troupe, UP Dance Port Society at UP Streetdance Club.

Nagpakita ng isang Audio-visual Presentation kung saan ipinakita ang pagtatagumpay ng bawat team sa nakaraang taon. Hinikayat din ang lahat na suportahan ang mga varsity team ng UP sa darating na ika-75 season ng University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

Samantala, nagdaos rin ng Pep Rally ang University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) noong Hulyo 10, 2012 sa Multi-purpose Hall bilang paghahanda rin sa nalalapit na UAAP season.

Nagsimula ang parada ng mga atleta sa ganap na ika-12 ng tanghali.

Dumalo sina Dr. Ronaldo San Jose, Prinsipal ng UPIS, Prof. Amihan Ramolete, Pangulo ng PTA at Prof. Juliano. Nagbigay sila ng kani-kanilang mensahe para sa mga atleta ng paaralan.

Isa-isa ring ipinakilala ang mga sports teams ng UPIS at nagpakita rin ng audio-visual presentation.

Bilang pagtatapos, nagbigay si Prof. Paul Mabaquiao, Puno ng Departamento ng Health at P.E., ng isang mensahe para sa mga atleta.

Eaglets soars high over Junior Maroons

UPIS lost its second UAAP game against the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 92-75, last July 22 at the MOA Arena in Pasay.

It was all Ateneo from the get-go as they blasted to an 8-0 lead at the start of the game. UPIS point guard Aaron Lina headed a mini-run with a spin-move lay-up and a couple of assists to tie the ballgame at 12-apiece with 3 minutes left in the first quarter.

But the Eaglets forced consecutive turnovers and scored on fastbreaks to up their lead by 12 at the end of the first canto, 27-15.

With Ateneo’s stellar defense, UPIS continued to struggle and was trailing by 19 at halftime, 49-30.

Ateneo led by as much as 30 points with 6 minutes left in the ballgame. The Junior Maroons tried to trim the lead with a 21-4 run, sparked by back-to-back treys from Diego Dario but there is no stopping the Eaglets from scoring their first win. ● by Dara Lilang and Trizia Badong
