From tea to desserts and dishes, matcha has been a great flavor to some people. It has a very strong flavor which can actually surprise you! It may be bitter, maybe sweet, or even just bittersweet.

Matcha (抹茶) is a finely-ground powder of green tea leaves. The leaves are shade-grown for three to four weeks before harvest. After, the powdered form of matcha will be made from tea leaves or tea bags, and can be made into liquid if you put either water or milk.

HISTORY OF MATCHA

It originated when China was ruled by dynasties. The Tang Dynasty of China steamed tea leaves to form tea bricks, making it easier for the Chinese to transport and trade them. The Song Dynasty, the dynasty after Tang, was then responsible for introducing this tea preparation to other countries. Eisai, a Japanese Buddhist monk, was one of the first to be introduced to this kind of tea preparation. Eiasi then introduced this to Kamakura Shogun in Kyoto and the tea was then called “Matcha”, which symbolizes the luxurious status of the Japanese.

PROS OF MATCHA

According to studies from Purechimp, matcha is healthy for your skin. In fact, it is full of antioxidants which gives you clear skin. It also helps to release all the free radicals that can destroy our skin cells and speed up aging.

In addition to this, drinking matcha tea can help you with losing weight. It is a great way to remove fats from your body. It is also a fact that if you drink four cups a day, it will help your body process fat by as much as 17%.

It will also help your brain by boosting your memory, making it function more properly.

CONS OF MATCHA

However, the reason why a lot of people don’t like matcha is because of its bitter taste. In addition to this, you should be careful with its caffeine! Matcha is high in caffeine which can lead to insomnia, loss of appetite, and irritation.

It can also increase stomach acid if you drink matcha without having any meals beforehand. It is recommended that if you drink matcha before having any milk, you should add milk or make it a latte to help with your stomach acid.

Matcha cookies are one of the best desserts ever created. It is a cookie mixed with authentic matcha powder; once it’s baked, it’ll be crispy on the outside and chewy inside. It is best topped with white chocolate chunks.

3. Matcha cake

Matcha cake is a soft-baked dense green tea cake, depending on how the person will strengthen its flavor. It can either be sweet or not-that sweet, which can be eaten at any time of the day. It is best combined with whipped cream, cream cheese, or white chocolate.

Noong Oktubre, sumailalim ang Grado 12 ng Applied Sciences and Engineering Track sa programa ng internship sa iba’t ibang institusyon sa UP Campus sa loob ng dalawang linggo. Samu’t sari ang kanilang mga gawain at ambag, ‘di lang sa internship site na kanilang napuntahan, pati na rin sa buong unibersidad. Upang magkaroon tayo ng ideya kung ano-ano ang kanilang mga kinaharap sa kanialng internship, ating isa-isahin ang mga site na napuntahan ng ating mga kapwa mag-aaral mula sa App Sci.

1. UPHS

Ang UP Health Service o Infirmary ay matatagpuan sa tapat ng Parish of the Holy Sacrifice, sa Laurel Avenue. Ayon sa mga interns, kanilang inikutan ang mga departamento ng site, katulad ng Triage, Publich Health, Dental, X-Ray atbp. Ilang sa kanilang ginawa ay ang pangongolekta ng impormasyon ng mga pasyente, katulad ng height, weight at blood pressure, pagkuha ng mga impormasyon mula sa mga blood sample at marami pang iba.

Natuwa naman ang mga interns sa nasabing site dahil bagaman matagal ang proseso ng iba’t ibang mga trabaho na binigay sa kanila ay gusto talaga nila ang kurso ng medisina. Nakakakaba nga lang daw minsan sa tuwing naiiwan sila ng kanilang mga supervisors ngunit dahil doon ay natutunan nilang maging mas independent.

Napagtanto rin ng mga interns na higit pa sa sweldo, ang higit na mahalaga sa mga empleyado ng UPHS ay ang pagtulong sa mga nangangailangan. Kaya bagama't di kataasan ang kanilang sinasahod ay nananatili pa rin sila rito.

2. MSI

Ang Marine Science Institute o MSI, ay matatagpuan malapit sa UP EEE, paglagpas sa UP gate ng CP Garcia Ave. Ilan sa mga ginawa ng mga interns dito ay ang pagreresearch ukol sa physical oceanography at pag-ayos ng impormasyon ukol sa dagat, katulad ng salinity at pressure nito. Dagdag dito nagsagawa rin sila ng mga graphs upang ilatag ang mga impormasyong kanilang nakalap. Bukod pa rito, nag-enhance rin ang mga interns ng satellite images ng mga reclamation areas upang mapakita kung alin ang mga maaaring tirhan ng iba’t ibang hayop.

Natuklasan ng mga interns ang iba’t ibang gadgets na ginagamit upang magrecord ng impormasyon ukol sa karagatan, gaya ng salinity at pressure ng tubig sa iba’t ibang lebel.

Naging hamon sa kanilang ang mga impormasyong kanilang kailangang makalap ngunit sila nama’y nabighani kanilang natuklasan sa pag-aanalisa ng karagatan. Bukod pa rito, mas nahasa ang mga interns sa coding at interpretasyon ng data na magagamit nila ito sa hinaharap.

3. UP Arki

Ang UP College of Architecture o mas kilala bilang UP Arki ay matatagpuan sa Delos Reyes Street. Dahil sumakto sa Science Society Month ng UP Arki ang internship, mas nagpokus ang mga trabaho ng interns ng Arki sa pagtulong sa pagsasagawa ng mga events katulad ng space + silhouette, isang talk ukol sa aplikasyon ng arkitektura sa fashion. Bukod rito, nagsagawa rin ang mga interns ng drafting.

Hiling nila na sana’y mas mahaba ang panahon ng internship upang mas marami silang nagawang aktibidad sa Arki.

4. ICE

Ang UP Institute of Civil Engineering o ICE ay matatagpuan sa TH Pardo de Tavera Street. Ayon sa mga interns, iba’t ibang mga field ng Civil Engineering ang kanilang sinubukan at bawat field ay mayroon silang ginagawang hands-on activity. Naranasan din nilang dumalo sa mga pagtalakay ukol sa nasabing field, kung saan nag-sit-in sila sa isang lecture. Isang halimbawa na ang sa Geotechnical field, kung saan nagsala ng lupa ang mga interns upang mahiwalay at mapag-iba-iba ang mga uri ng lupa.

Ayon sa mga interns, natuwa sila sa pagkakataong makagamit ng iba’t ibang uri ng kagamitan sa pangangalap ng datos. Naging komportable rin sila dahil bagong renovate ang gusali kaya’t malinis ang site. Nakatulong din sa kanila ang mabuting pakikitungo ng kanilang mga supervisors.

Dahil sa internship, natutunan ng mga interns ang makaangkop sa bagong kapaligiran at mas maging malay sa oras at iskedyul ng mga gawain. Bukod pa rito, natutunan ng mga interns na maging mas maingat sa mga kagamitan sa kanilang trabaho lalo pa't mamahalin ang mga equipment sa kanilang site.

5. “Triple E”

Ang UP Electrical Electronics and Engineering o “Triple E” ay matatagpuan sa tabi ng Department of Computer Science at “Triple M”, sa Velasquez Street. May 14 na mga laboratoryo ang gusali ngunit lima lamang ang inikutan ng mga interns sa dalawang linggo. Isa sa mga laboratoryong kanilang napuntahan ay ang Digital Signal Processing Lab, kung saan tinalakay sa kanila ang iba’t ibang uri ng signal at audio. Tinuruan din ng audio-editing ang mga interns gamit ang isang software.

Ayon sa interns, talagang namulat sila at maraming natutuhan sa kanilang site. Binanggit din nila na friendly at accommodating ang kanilang supervisors. Bagama't may katagalan ang ilang proseso ng mga gawain, nakakaramdam naman ng saya ang mga interns kapag kanilang natatapos ang mga trabaho. Natutunang din nilang maging mas strategic at resourceful sa pagharap ng ilang maliliit na problema.

6. “Triple M”

Ang UP Mining Metallurgical and Materials Engineering o “Triple M” ay matatagpuan sa tabi ng Department of Science, sa Velasquez Street. Ilan sa kanilang ginawa ay ang environmental assessment at synthesis of materials. Tinukoy nila kung saan magagamit ang materials at pinag-iba-iba ang mga uri nito.

Para sa mga interns, hindi nila masyadong napaghusay ang kanilang buong kakayahan dahil isang laboratoryo lamang ang kanilang napuntahan sa buong dalawang linggo. Gaya sa ibang site, accomodating naman ang mga supervisors sa kabila ng pagiging abala sa mga gawain.

Dahil sa internship, natutunan ng mga interns na mas habaan ang pasyensa dahil kailangang maging maingat sa mga equipment at mga proseso sa laboratoryo. Bukod pa rito, nahasa rin ‘di umano ang mapanuring pag-iisip ng mga interns dahil sa kawalan nila ng malalim na kaalaman sa trabahong nabigay sa kanila.

7. Institute of Biology

Ang UP Institute of Biology ay matatagpuan sa Science Complex, Regidor Street. Ilan sa mga ginawa ng mga interns rito ay species identification, DNA extraction, pag-resaerch sa DNA bar coding, at iba pa.

Nakatulong sa mga interns ang pagkakaroon ng mga libreng oras at maayos ang kanilang schedule. Inilarawan naman nila ang mga supervisors na accommodating, palakaibigan at palabiro na naging dahilan para hindi maging masyadong seryoso lagi ang kanilang trabaho.

Nahasa naman ang pasyensa ng mga interns dulot ng tagal ng proseso ng kanilang trabaho. Bukod pa rito, natutunan ng mga interns na maging precise sa mga pinagawa sa kanila, partikular ang nauugnay sa DNA na isang pagkakamali lamang ay malaki na agad ang epekto sa kanilang research.

8. NCTS

Ang National Center for Transportation Studies o NCTS ay matatagpuan sa likod ng Department of Interactive Learning Center, sa G. Apacible Street. Ang mga ginawa ng mga interns ay ang pag-encode ng mga forms ukol sa household activities, pagpa-plot ng mga jeepney stops sa mapa, pagsasarbey ukol sa bilis at dami ng mga sasakyan at ng mga bisikleta sa UP Sunken Garden at pagmo-monitor ng daloy ng trapiko sa intersections sa campus.

Ayon sa mga interns, naging sobrang busy nila dahil ipinaranas sa kanila ang mismong trabaho ng mga empleyado ng kanilang internship site. Sa kabila nito, naging masaya naman raw ang karanasan dahil nauugnay sa kanilang interes. Bukod pa rito, sobrang accommodating at palakaibigan rin ng kanilang supervisors.

9. ITDC

Ang Information Technology Development Center o ITDC ay matatagpuan sa Vidal A. Tan Hall, Quirino Avenue. Ang pangunahing gawain ng mga interns ay pananaliksik, paggawa ng inforgraphic at pagtalakatay sa iba’t ibang isyu ng teknolohiyang ginagamit para sa paraan ng komunikasyon, katulad na lamang ng Data Privacy.

Bagaman maraming pinagawang presentasyon sa interns, nagkaroon naman sila ng mga break. Mabuti rin ang pakikitungo at mauunawain ang kanilang mga supervisor.

Dahil mga presentasyon ang pangunahing trabaho ng mga interns, natutunan nila kung ano ang mga dapat isaalang-alang sa tuwing gagawa nito. Bilang karagdarag, naging independent rin sila sa pagri-research dahil na rin sa dami ng inaasikaso ng kanilang mga supervisor.

10. Institute of Chemistry

Ang Institute of Chemistry ay matatagpuan sa Science Complex, sa tabi ng National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, sa CP Garcia Avenue. May dalawang lab na napuntahan ang nag-internship rito. Ang mga lab ay para sa pag-research ng drug design na maaaring gamitin upang maging lunas sa sakit. Samantala, ang isa namang lab ay para sa iba’t ibang uri ng halaman na gagamitin para sa nasabing drug design. Ang intern ay nagsasagawa ng research ukol sa posibleng lunas sa malaria.

Ayon sa intern, magandang oportunidad ang maging saksi sa mga maaaring maging lunas sa modernong sakit. Naging hamon lang sa intern dahil ang ilang kasama niya sa site ng College of Science ay nasa ibang institute. Mas madali raw sana kung may kasama ang siya at posibleng natapos raw sana ang study na kaniyang ginagawa ukol sa malaria. Dahil sa kakulangan sa oras, hindi natapos ang study na ginawa ng intern sa dalawang linggo ng internship.

Ang mga supervisor naman ng intern ay mababait, ‘di raw siya pinabayaan at hindi naging mahigpit sa kaniya. Pero dahil mga propesor din ang supervisors, medyo busy rin sila sa kanilang mga klase.

Ilan sa maraming natutunan ng intern ay ang pagiging mas mahusay sa komunikasyon sa kaniyang supervisor dulot ng pagiging mag-isa sa site. Bukod pa rito, nahasa rin ang time management skill ng intern. Natutuwa siyang naranasan ang totoong buhay sa field ng mga chemist.

Iilan lamang ang mga nasa listahang ito ang mga posibleng internship site sa buong campus, sa larangan ng siyensya. Sana ay hindi maging sanhi ng takot at kaba ang listahang habang papalapit tayo sa Grado 12. Sa halip ay gamitin natin ang mga impormasyong ito bilang paghahanda sa ating on-campus internship, bago man ang internship site na mapupunta sa atin o nasa listahang ito. //ni Ned Pucyutan

It is 6:47 AM; you’re running down the hallways though you shouldn’t be. You pass by many teachers who are on their way to their designated classrooms. Yet you don’t greet them because you are rushing towards the library with a heavy backpack. You see the library getting closer and closer. But then you notice the inside of the library is all dark and the door is locked. You realize, there’s no way for you to print your homework now.

These kinds of moments are what Christian Sarabia of Batch 2020 hates the most. But he noticed that he isn’t the only one. He was in Grade 10 when he noticed that everyone needed a printer and people were desperate for their requirements, usually their theses drafts, to be printed.

In UPIS, there are only three library printers available to cater to all UPIS high school students. During lunch, the library gets crowded because many students print their requirements before their next class. But Christian realized what if the requirement is to be passed during the first subject? Where, then, will students print their requirements? No one actually thought of tackling a printing business before and students kept on asking for “printing favors” from their classmates.

In consideration of the time and resources other students put in to fulfill these requests, Christian conceptualized his very own Printer Bot, a printing service with the help of the Messenger app.

Printer Bot is a feature on the Messenger app that Christian programmed to process information regarding students’ requirements, including page count, if the requirement is back-to-back, if it is colored, and/or if it is to be stapled or not.

“So naisip ko na gumawa ako ng bot na kahit tulog ako, you can send your files to Printer Bot tapos kino-collect nung Printer Bot lahat ng ipi-print ko the next morning. Gagawin ko na lang is ipi-print and i-staple if need i-staple,” Chrisitan said. (So I thought of making a bot that, even when I’m asleep, you can send your files to and then it’ll collect all of the files that I will print the next morning. All I have to do is print and staple if needed.)

Though it is a bot, Printer Bot is not automatic. The Bot only collects data and it does not automatically print your requirement after you send your files. Christian has to turn his laptop on first and manually print all of the files as he gets ready for school.

According to him, of course, there are struggles with this kind of business. First and foremost is the payment issue. Sometimes, students forget to pay Christian after their requirement is delivered to them. On his part, Christian himself prefers not to accept payments whenever he doesn’t want to carry coins, making him earn less. Moreover, the delivery itself is quite a hassle for Christian.

“Ang hirap magdeliver. Sana nga may station na kung saan ko pwedeng iwan lahat ng pinrint ko tapos kayo na lang kukuha,” Christian explained. (It’s hard to deliver [the printed requirements]. I wish there was a station where I could leave everything I printed and the customers are the ones to get what is theirs.)

Even so, Christian is still happy because he gets to help students such as himself who find it hard to print their requirements on time. Also, he finds it amazing that he gets to provide printing services for people who rarely interact with him. Because of his business, he has met new friends and has made new connections with people.

Sa tuwing nagsisimula ang bagong akademikong taon, nagsisimula na rin ang paglaganap ng isang sakit na maaaring ‘di agad-agad mapapansin sapagkat ang mga sintomas nito, katulad ng ubo’t sipon, ay hindi natin aakalaing seryoso.

Ang sintomas na ito ay ang Dengue Fever na resulta ng pagkakaroon ng Dengue Virus. Ang Dengue ay isang vector-borne disease sapagkat nakukuha ito mula sa kagat ng mga lamok na may dala-dala ng nasabing virus. Ilan sa mga sintomas nito ay ang pagkakaroon ng sakit ng ulo, labis na pagkahilo, sakit ng katawan, rashes, madalas na pagsusuka, at marami pang iba. Ang mga nasabing sintomas ay maaaring lumitaw sa loob ng dalawang linggo.

Kapag nagpakonsulta sa doktor, ang taong may dengue ay inaasahang magkaroon ng mababang platelet count at mababang blood pressure. Kung sakaling mas bumaba pa ang platelet count at blood pressure ng pasyenteng may dengue virus, maaaring manganib ang buhay ng biktima. Sa katunayan, idineklara na ng Department of Health (DOH) ang national dengue epidemic dulot ng pagkakaroon 98% na pagdami ng dengue cases mula Enero. Bukod pa rito, simula Hulyo ay nagkaroon ng humigit-kumulang na 5,100 na kaso ng dengue kada linggo ang kinahaharap ng DOH (Andrade, 2019).

Sadyang nakababahala ang dengue, kaya’t mabuting ngayon pa lang ay mapigilan na ang tuluyang paglaganap nito. Sa nakaraang mga taon, tumaas na rin ang bilang ng mga estudyante ng UPIS na nagkaroon ng Dengue. Dulot nito, nagsagawa ang UPIS ng paraan upang maiwasan ang Dengue katulad na lamang ng fumigation at ang pagpapahintulot sa mga estudyante na magsuot ng jogging pants. Ngunit bukod pa rito, maaari pa nating mas iwasan ang dengue sa pamamagitan ng mga sumusunod na paraan:

1. Maglinis ng tahanan

Dahil ang dengue ay nakukuha lang mula sa mga lamok, siguraduhing hindi maaaring mamuhay ang mga lamok sa kung saan tayo naninirahan. Tiyaking walang mga container na puno ng tubig na maaaring pangitlugan ng mga lamok. Bukod pa rito, dapat malinis ang mga sulok ng tahanan, dahil dito madalas nagkaroon ng alikabok na madalas ring pinupuntahan ng mga lamok.

2. Magsuot ng mas angkop na damit

Kung sakali namang aalis ng tahanan, maaari rin tayong magsuot ng mas balot na damit katulad ng pantalon at pang-itaas na mahaba ang mga manggas upang hindi umabot ang mga lamok sa ating balat.

Bukod pa rito, mabuting iwasan natin ang pagsuot ng madidilim na damit, lalong-lalo na ang kulay itim sapagkat ito’y nakaaakit para sa mga lamok.

3. Gumamit ng mga mosquito repellant

Kung sakali namang naaabot pa rin ng lamok ang ating balat kahit na nakasuot ng mahahabang damit, maaaring gumamit ng mga lotion o patches na naglalabas ng scent na hindi kaaya-aya para sa mga lamok. Ang mga ito ay mabibili kahit sa pinakamalapit na convenience stores o kaya nama’y sa mga supermarket..

4. Panatilihing malinis ang katawan

Panghuli ay ang pinakasimple ngunit ang pinakamahalaga sa lahat ng ito ay ang pagkakaroon ng maayos na hygiene. Siguraduhin nating maligo araw-araw, o sa tuwing nararamdaman nating hindi na kaaya-aya ang amoy ng ating katawan dahil madaling maakit ang lamok sa amoy ng body odor at pawis.

Iilan lamang ang mga ito sa mga paraan ng pag-iwas sa pagkakaroon ng Dengue. Dulot ng maraming paraan na ang mayroon tayo sa kasalukuyan, mabuting atin nang subukan ang mga ito upang makaiwas sa isang sakit nang sa gayon ay ating matanggihan ang Dengue na iyan.

Elegance, flexibility, passion and a lot of… tip-toes? These are what might come to mind upon hearing the word “ballet”. But what is it really? How come it’s a rare topic in UPIS? To answer these questions, we talked to Erika Sasazawa of 11 - Amado V. Hernandez and asked her to share her experiences and insights regarding Ballet.

Erika started learning ballet 11 years ago with her sister at Powerdance for jazz, hip-hop and ballet. Erika’s mother enrolled Erika and Erika’s sister due to her love for dancing. Erika was just six years old back then and she doesn’t really remember well what genre of dance she loved the most but, regardless, ballet is where she stayed because she saw its benefits.

Ballet helps with the coordination of movement, especially with music, Erika shared. It trains the body to have better muscle memory and to be more flexible. Besides that, Erika mentioned that ballet taught her discipline, not just in terms of respect, but also in terms of her diet.

However, Erika said, the other dancers sometimes do the diet discipline at extreme levels, leading to anorexia. Besides the possible chance of having anorexia, there are also quite a number of struggles that Erika faced as she continued her ballet life. One of which is keeping your commitment to the activity. According to Erika, if you really want to do ballet, you have to give up a lot of time.

Other than that, you should also take care of your wallet because, you’d most probably be spending a lot of money for ballet classes. According to Erika, in a month, she spends an approximate P5,000.00 for her ballet. This includes the tuition fee of the dance school and other miscellaneous expenses for the costumes for recitals.

Lastly, just like every sport, you should be open to criticisms because ballet is all about looking like you’re not struggling while you perform, said Erika. Instead, these criticisms should be used as your fuel to further improve, Erika said. Also, she added that sometimes it’s a lot of pressure to catch up and learn the choreography on time.

“Mahirap kasi sumayaw. I mean, habang sumasayaw ka kasi, nag-iisip ka [ng steps] and kasi, nagwo-worry ka rin [sa sayaw].” Erika said. (It’s hard to dance. I mean, while you’re dancing, you think about the steps and you worry about the dance as well.)

These are only some of the struggles that Erika could mention. Despite these, Erika still continues to attend ballet practices every other day. Asked why she continues to do ballet despite the struggles, Erika said that, for her, she has not yet reached her full potential and she wants to keep challenging herself to be better. As a matter of fact, Erika recently transferred to Manila Ballet from IDMM Ballet School, her previous school so that she can have trainings more often. She shared that in her last school, IDMM, there were only trainings twice per week.

Though some may say that ballet is just a waste of time, effort and money, for Erika, it’s more than just a mere hobby. Erika said ballet is a difficult activity but she considers it her passion and it gives her a feeling of satisfaction. //by Kiel Dionisio & Ned Pucyutan

Nakalabas na ang resulta ng Grade 7 Admission Test (GAT) na isinagawa noong ika-13 ng Abril sa University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) 7-12 building upang makapasok sa UPIS High School.

Ayon kay Prop. Portia Dimabuyu, Katuwang na Prinsipal sa Administrasyon, higit kumulang na 500 na aplikante na galing sa iba’t ibang eskuwelahan na pribado at pampubliko ang kumuha ng

pagsusulit. Mula sa mga aplikante, 10 estyudante lamang ang nakatakdang tanggapin para sa susunod na akademikong taong 2019-2020.

Bukod sa GAT, may iba pang paraan para makapasok sa UPIS sa Grade 7. Ang mga mag-aaral na atleta ay pwedeng makapasok sa pamamagitan ng UPIS Varsity Athletic Admissions System (UPIS VAAS).

Idinaos ang taunang Kinder Admissions Test (KAT) para sa akamedikong taon 2019-2020 noong Marso 30, Abril 1, 6, at 8. Umabot sa halos 1, 200 bata ang kumuha ng pagsusulit ayon kay Prop. Portia Dimabuyu, Katuwang na Prinsipal sa Administrasyon.

Ang tinatanggap na bilang ng estudyante para sa KAT ay nasa 100, pero para sa susunod na akademikong taon ang papasok ay 102 na estudyante dahil nagkaroon ng tie sa scores ng mga kumuha ng exam ayon kay Prop. Dimabuyu. Ang hatian ng mga nakapasok ay 62 na estyudante na papasok ay galing sa mga University of the Philippines (UP) personnel, habang 40 naman na bata ay galing sa non-UP personnel.

Nalalapit na naman ang halalan at hindi maikakaila ang kabang dinudulot nito sa mga tumatakbo. Ngunit, sino-sino nga ba ang mga maaari nating iboto? Kilalanin natin ang ilan sa mga pangalan at partidong maaaring gagabay sa atin sa susunod na dalawang semestre.

Si Danie Cabrera, mula sa partidong Awanggan, ay tumatakbo sa pagkapangulo ng Pamunuan ng Kamag-aral (pKA).

Nagpasya siyang tumakbo muli ngayong taon dahil sa kasalukuyan niyang posisyon bilang Pangalawang Pangulo ng pKA at nakita niya naging epektibo ang kanilang plataporma para itaas ang partisipasyon ng mga mag-aaral sa paaralan. Ang pagiging bahagi ng magandang pagbabago na kinakailangan ng paaralan ang nagsisilbing motibasyon ng mga kandidato sa partidong Awanggan.

Isang kalakasan ng kanilang partido ang pagkakasundo nila sa mga kanilang kapwa kandidato, at nagbibigay ng iba’t ibang pananaw ang bawat isa sa mga isyu ng paaralan, ayon kay Danie. Magkaparehas ang kanilang damdamin tungkol sa mga bagay-bagay. At bilang kasalukuyang Pangalawang Pangulo, nagiging bentahe ang mga karanasan niya sa pagiging parte ng pKA.

“The fact that we all have this willingness to serve drives us to be more active as student-leaders, since our heart and mind are in the right place,” sabi ni Danie. Kabilang sa plataporma nila ang pagtuloy sa ilang nakaraang proyekto ng pKA, pagbigay ng pansin sa mga karapatan at mga nararanasang problema ng mga estudyante, at pagsisigurado na mananatili ang mga mabubuting epekto ng kanilang mga proyekto.

Ayon kay Danie, ang kahulugan ng pangalan ng partido nila ay “walang hanggan” dahil pangmatagalang solusyon ang balak nilang magawa sa mga proyekto nila. Ang kasama ni Danie sa partidong Awanggan ay sina Romi Okada bilang Pangalawang Pangulo, Cy Licuanan bilang Kalihim, Rafael Alcazar bilang Ingat-Yaman, Mary Rodriguez bilang Katuwang na Ingat-Yaman, Abbie Cueresma bilang Tagapangasiwa, Isabel Biason bilang Tagapamahayag, Dean Cabrera bilang Tagapamahala, at sina Raymond Tingco at Francheska Yanga bilang mga Tagapamayapa. Ang partidong Awanggan ang nag-iisang partido na tumatakbo sa pKA.

Kasabay ng eleksyon sa pKA, masigasig din ang pangangampanya ng mga tumatakbo para sa year level organizations (YLO). Katulad ng pKA, ang YLOs natin ay magsisilbing student-leaders sa ating paaralan. Ngunit, di tulad ng pKA, sila ay mas nakatuon sa kani-kanilang batch. Ilan sa mga tatakbo bilang YLO officers ay ang mga sumusunod.

Si Gian Manalo ay isang kandidatong tatakbo ulit bilang Tagapamahayag, para sa Senior Council. Ang pangalan ng kanilang partido ay eSCalator. Sa kasalukuyang taon ay Tagapamahayag din siya ng Junior Association. Siya ay muling tatakbo para sa Senior Council para ipagpatuloy ang serbisyo niya sa kanyang batch na Doble Dos at magamit ang mga natutunan niya sa mga nakaraang taon para sa mas mahusay na pamumuno. Ang kanilang mga proyekto para sa kanilang batch ay eleksyon para sa susunod na taon, powerdance, team-building, fundraising, at outreach.

“We always stand on the right! Sama-samang aangat at sama-samang haharapin ang mga hadlang para sa mas magandang kinabukasan,” dagdag ni Gian.

Para sa Junior Assocation naman, si Kylssa Betito ay tumatakbo bilang Kalihim sa ilalim ng partidong Nin9as (Ningas). Ayon kay Klyssa, Ningas ang pangalan ng kanilang partido dahil nais ng kanilang partido na pasiklabin ang natatanging talento at potensyal ng kanilang batch.

Ayon kay Klyssa, tumakbo siya dahil gusto niyang matulungan ang kanilang batch sa iba’t ibang aspeto sa pamamagitan ng iba't ibang paraan. Isang halimbawa ay ang pagpapabuti ng natatanging talento at potensyal ng kanilang batch.

Dagdag ni Klyssa, karapat-dapat daw na manalo ang kanilang partido dahil alam niyang determinado silang maisakatuparan ang kanilang plataporma.

“...layunin ng aming partido na magabayan at matulungan ang aming batch sa pagpapamalas ng kanilang potensyal,” sabi ni Klyssa.

Ilan sa mga proyekto na ilulunsad ng Nin9as ay ang Siklab: Variety Show, Junior-Senior Promenade, Outreach Program, BOTC: Junkdrive Fundraiser, Sportsfest/Team-building at Mental Health Talks.

Samantala, mayroon namang dalawang partido na tumatakbo para sa Sophomore Association.

Si Angel Ken Young ay ang kandidato sa pagkapangalawang pangulo ng partidong United. Naging interesado siyang tumakbo para mas matibay ang pagkakaisa ng kanilang batch at para magkaroon ng mga oportunidad na mas makilala ang mga kapwa niyang estudyante at mga guro. Sa pagtakbo niya bilang Pangalawang Pangulo, gusto niyang bigyan ng pansin ang mga isyu na naobserbahan niya at ng iba niyang kasamang mag-aaral.

United ang napili nilang pangalan ng partido dahil naniniwala silang kinakailangan ang pagkakaisa para maging matagumpay ang isang batch. Ito ay para maihanda ang isa’t isa para magbigay ng mabuting pagbabago sa mundo. Ito’y makakamit nila sa pamamagitan ng pagsasagawa ng mga team building activities para sa buong batch at isang fundraiser.

Ang kalakasan ng partidong United ay ang mga karanasan nila sa pagiging lider, ayon kay Angel. Karamihan sa kanilang partido ay mga student-leader sa dati nilang paaralan, kaya mayroon silang kaalaman sa pamumuno.

“Pagsasamahin namin ang kaalaman namin galing sa nakaraang paaralan namin at ang mga ideals ng UPIS, at maaaring mayroon kaming makukuha na isang mas mabuting [paraan ng pagmumuno],” sabi ni Angel Ken.

Sa kabilang dako naman ay ang partidong 8OAR (SOAR) at si Anna Gabrielle Dalet ang tumatakbo para sa posisyon ng Pangulo. Siya ang kasalukuyang Tagapamayapang Babae ng Freshman Association, at napansin di umano niya ang mga aspekto ng kaniyang batch na kinakailangan pang pagbutihin na hindi nila natugunan bilang FA.

“Tumakbo po ako dahil na-realize ko na ito na po yung pagkakataon ko na magawan ng paraan ang mga problema kasama ng ibang mga kasapi ng batch,” sabi ni Anna.

Ang pangunahing layunin ng partidong 8OAR ay pagtibayin ang koneksyon ng batch sa isa’t isa. Isa sa mga proyekto nila ay ang pagkakaroon ng regular na mga batch assembly para mapalapit pa ang batch, ayon kay Anna. May iba’t ibang mga paksa na pag-uusapan sa paraan ng open-forum tulad ng bullying, toxicity, at mga paraan para pagbutihin ang komunikasyon sa batch. Ang proyekto na ito ay magmumungkahi ng kolaborasyon sa guidance counselor ng batch.

Ipinagmamalaki ng partido ang dibersidad ng mga miyembro nila. Ito ay makatutulong sa pagbibigay ng iba’t ibang opinyon at pananaw sa mga problema.

“Tingin ko po na dapat kaming iboto dahil may karanasan na po kami in working together as a whole for the batch, at dahil handa kami upang matulungan, masuportahan at magabayan ang mga estudyante sa mas magandang kinabukasan,” sabi ni Anna.

Pagdating sa Freshman Association, mayroon ding dalawang partidong tumatakbo, ang FAmiliarize at ang PAMANA.

Si Beatrice Hijara, ang Tagapamahayag ng FAmiliarize ay naniniwalang karapat-dapat manalo ang kanilang partido dahil alam niyang kapag pinagsama-sama ang angking talento at kayang ibigay ng kaniyang partido, mas mapabubuti nila ang kanilang batch. Ilan sa mga pinaplano nilang mga proyekto ay ang recycle drive, team building activity at marami pang iba, ayon kay Alexi Isorena, ang kanilang Tagapamahala.

FAmiliarize ang naisip na pangalan ng partido dahil naniniwala silang kailangan mas maging pamilyar ang isa’t isa sa kanilang kapwa upang malaman kung ano ang dapat at hindi dapat, nang sa gayon ay magkaroon ng pagkakaisa, ayon kay Beatrice.

Ang kabilang partido naman ay ang PAMANA o Partido ng mga Mag-Aaral na Nagkakaisa.

Ayon kay Faith Fabro, ang kanilang Tagapamayapang Babae, layunin ng PAMANA na ipamalas ang pagkakaisa, pagkakapantay-pantay at ang pagkakaroon ng malasakit sa kapwa. Ilan sa kanilang binabalak na proyekto ay ang team building, batch night, charity donation at marami pang iba.

Naniniwala ang PAMANA na maaaring hindi pa sila ganoon kasanay maging mga lider dahil unang beses pa lamang nilang sumubok maging mga mamumuno, ngunit handa silang gawin ang kanilang makakaya upang mas mapabuti ang kanilang batch.

Ang mga pangalang nabanggit ay ilan lamang sa mga pangalang maaaring makita natin sa ating balota. Ngayong mas kilala na natin ang ilan sa kanila, mabuting pag-isipan pa natin ang ating mga iboboto. Dahil pagdating ng panahon, tayo rin ang makararanas ng kanilang pamumuno. Nasubukan mo na bang kumain ng pagkain na literal na galing sa langit? Kung hindi pa, siguradong bubusugin ka ng pamilyang Aragones sa kanilang panaderia, ang Bread From Heaven.

Ang Bread from Heaven ay matatagpuan sa Dagohoy Street. Ang negosyo ay pagmamay-ari ng pamilya ni Milcah Aragones ng 11-Washington Z. Sycip.

Ayon kay Milcah, simula pa noong ‘90s ay mayroon nang Bread From Heaven. Noong mga panahong iyon, napakasikat ng kanilang panaderia. Ngunit, ito’y nahinto dulot ng pagkamatay ng kanilang lolo.

“Doon din (sa Dagohoy), naglalako si lolo. Like, gamit pa niya yung styro na pink, yung may lamang pandesal,” sabi ni Milcah.

Pagkatapos ng isa’t kalahating dekada, naisip na ituloy ng ina ni Milcah ang Bread From Heaven dulot ng hilig niyang maghurno. Ang Bread From Heaven ay muling nagbukas sa taong 2016. Simula noon, unti-unting sumikat ang Bread from Heaven sa komunidad na malapit dito. Pero dahil ang lokasyon ngayon ay medyo tago, hindi na katulad ng dati ang kasikatan nito. Ngunit para kay Milcah, kahit hindi masyadong sikat ang pananderia at hindi siya masyadong nakakabisita dito, nagpapasalamat pa rin siya dahil sa nagagawang tulong nito sa kanilang pamilya.

“So ‘yon, pero ano, for us yung mga miscellaneous [na pamimili], ang alam ko doon kinukuha ni mommy,” sabi ni Milcah.

Bagaman may trabaho ang ina ni Milcah, nagsisilbing dagdag ipon ang kanilang kita mula sa Bread from Heaven para sa kanilang pamilya, lalong lalo na sa tuwing magkakaroon ng ‘di inaasahang gastusin.

Bukod sa pamilya ni Milcah, marami pang natutulungan ang Bread from Heaven. Isa na rito ang kanilang tauhang si Kuya Piping. Siya ay may kapansanan na nakilala ng pamilyang Aragones sa kanilang simbahan. Si Kuya Piping ay walang pamilya at siya’y hirap magkaroon ng pangmatagalan na trabaho dulot ng kaniyang kondisyon. Sa pamamagitan ng Bread From Heaven ay nagkaroon siya ng trabaho.

Kung bibigyang pansin naman ang kanilang tinapay, isa sa kanilang bestsellers ang crinkles. Bukod dito, maipagmamalaki rin nila ang cheese roll na halos 5 pulgada ang laki sa halagang walong piso lamang.

The stage is set. The lights are dim. Band members are in position. Fog envelopes the stage. The crowd is hyped. This party’s about to start. But what’s behind the stage? Who’s responsible for this craze on stage?

Bryant Galicia of 11 - Washington Z. Sycip might seem like a normal student during the day. However, he has another side unknown to many, which is being a disc jockey (DJ). He became a DJ because of their family business, Audiotronix: Professional Lights and Sounds System.

Audiotronix is a lights and sounds rendering company. They work backstage during on-stage performances to provide the light and sound features of an event. It is a sole-proprietorship business run exclusively by the Galicia family.

It started as a pastime for Mrs. Selca M. Foja-Galicia and Mr. Jing Galicia. They owned a mobile, a truck which they used to keep and deliver rented out sound system in their province, Romblon. Eventually, the mobile was sold after their marriage and the small business ended because the family wanted to move to Manila to better provide for their son, Bryant.

However, in 2016, they started up the business again in Manila as a mobile called Audiotronix. The business grew exponentially from only handling small corporate parties and birthdays to big-name bands such as Ben&Ben and December Avenue. According to Bryant, they were able to cater to the said bands due to the recommendation of other indie bands. They even provided for the 2019 Rakrakan Festival last March, an annual musical festival, that featured 120 bands.

Though not many are aware of it, in UPIS, Audiotronix has provided the lights and sounds of UPIS Days’ Battle of the Bands for the past three years. You might not be aware of it, but they’re the ones behind the spotlight given to our performing bands.

The goal of Audiotronix, according to Bryant, is to make their business grow. For him, they’ve already succeeded. He said his family didn't expect the business to grow in a matter of three years. Being able to cater to a large number of bands, being recommended by one band after another, these were all unexpected for them. However, for Bryant, Audiotronix hasn’t reached their peak yet.

"Ako, personally, gusto kong ma-experience namin yung maka-cater sa iconic na venues, like Mall of Asia or sa SMART Araneta Coliseum, or at least man lang yung maka-cater ng international artists," Bryant said. (For me, personally, I want us to experience catering at iconic venues such as Mall of Asia or SMART Araneta Coliseum, or at least being able to cater international artists.)

Audiotronix might not be a famous local business among audiences, but they are among bands, said Bryant. They have catered to indie bands and big-name bands. They have not yet catered to events at iconic venues, but Bryant believes this will happen in time.

Imagine your schoolmates, stress-free in their tailored suits and extravagant gowns dancing through the night. A rock band lively plays as people eat from the all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s that time of the year again, a very formal event approaches and it’s called Prom.

Prom, also known as Promenade. It is a formal dance which started in the 19th century of American universities and colleges wherein graduating students, donning their formal attire, celebrate in a formal dance for their upcoming graduation. In the 1940s, however, younger Americans requested that proms be held for them. Finally, when the 1950s came, the post-cold war economy allowed American high schools to hold proms. Today, proms are still celebrated and are usually held in the high schools' gymnasiums, if not hotels or country clubs.

Almost all high schools in the whole world have proms as a tradition except for certain countries. One example is in India where they don't have proms due to the conservatism of their culture. However, Indians do have a similar annual social gathering called "Dandiya Raas Night" in high schools and colleges where, instead of formal attires, students wear traditional Indian clothes and dance more lively than those usually done in American proms.

Unlike Indian high schools, the UPIS Prom follows the American traditions. The program consists of formal slow dances and the Cotillion, and different performances from students. Prom in UPIS used to be held in February. However, due to the calendar shift, which moved the start of the school year from August to June, and the shift of the UPIS Days from December to February, proms are now held during the month of April.

In UPIS, the event is only for Grade 9 and 10 students and outsiders are not allowed. This is because the main objective of prom is for the two batches to be able to bond with each other.

Another feature of UPIS Prom is the freedom to have a prom date. This allows the students to prompose to or ask another student to be their date for the prom.

Promposals are the source of news and buzz in the days and weeks leading up to prom. You can usually tell a promposal taking place by sudden squeals of joy or noisy teasing in the canteen or the ramp area. People think it’s an easy thing to do. In fact, students usually think that the larger the audience, the higher the chances of getting a "yes". However, this is a questionable way to ask because the “yes” garnered from a public promposal could have been caused by public pressure.

If you want to enjoy a PROMising night with your prom date, here are some suggestions for you. We’ve listed down some of the few ways people have done a creative and cute promposal as alternatives to the public promposal.

If you don’t want to be SINGle in the upcoming prom, how about SING a song to your desired promdate. Serenading would be an easy way for you to prompose. But you must remember, your promposal aims to get the attention of one person, not the whole class or the whole school. So instead of doing this outdoors, do this privately.

On the other hand, even if you’re not musically inclined, you can still make this work! By serenading, you're showing how much you're willing to go past your limits to convince your prom date. Just remember that you are not serenading to get an audience, but to get the person you like to spend prom night with you.

When it comes to food, most people would not hesitate to accept. However, if they see the word 'prom' first, before they realize that the food is being given to them, chances are that they might take a minute before they decide. So if you choose this option, try to hide the purpose of giving food to your hopefully soon-to-be prom date and surprise them first. Also, it'll have a higher success rate if you cooked the food yourself.

Unlike the first two ideas, crafts might make your promposal more memorable to whoever you're asking to prom. Crafts are not edible unlike food and it doesn't last for only two to three minutes unlike serenading. Other than that, crafts really show how much time and effort you're willing to give just to get the "Yes" from the person you're promposing to.

These promposals are just three in a million ways to prompose, the creativity of it varies from person to person, there is no secret to that. Therefore, choose the way that represents you the most and remember that the attention you are seeking is from a person, not from a crowd.

Wrapping it all up, prom has a come a long way since the 1940s and since it’s coming up fast, make sure you’re ready. Aim to joyfully spend the night with people whom you are closest with or you want to be close with.
