Literary (Submission): To My Hero

I'm looking forward to it.

The moment I get to catch a glimpse of how the sky, bathed in calming shades of blue, is overshadowed by the vibrant rays of warm reds and light pinks. And as I savor every second of this moment, I'll look into your ocean eyes and I'll wonder how small orbs can reflect such a wide variety of hues. How these splendid rays of light is a portent of an incoming storm. As if on cue, a wall of black absorbs those various colors, leaving me standing on the beach alone watching the sun that sets on the horizon.

Forgive me for I have lost the spectrum of hues you worked so hard to let me see. Forgive me for I no longer bear the delicate rainbow you brought in this bland and dark world of mine. Forgive me for I cannot recall the moments that we shared together and forgive me for I have nothing to give in return.

But please know that I'll remember all the vibrant reds, the warm yellows, the relaxing greens and even the coldest blues. I'll tuck them in the deepest corner of my memory in hopes that one day, I'd be able to see them again. I'll remember your sweet whispers that continue to echo in the wind. I'll remember how promises of your return would spill out of your mouth and how the feeling of euphoria rushed through my veins as every word slipped through your lips.

I will be waiting
For the moon that never meets the horizon, the sun that would never shine again.
I am still waiting
For the hero that would never come back, the promise that would never be kept. But here I am waiting, hoping that you'll find me again. Because it satisfies your feeling when someone you've been waiting for comes. It makes you feel that the wait was worth it.

Literary (Submission): One Breath Away

I was a breath away from telling you.

My phone beeped. Let’s have lunch tomorrow? Woah, a text a from you. You’re asking me out to lunch? It’s been awhile since we went out for lunch. Ever since you left to work for another office, I saw less and less of you. In the past, you were a fixture of my lunch breaks. I had no qualms asking you to go out and eat. Sometimes, to my glee, you gamely invited me. If we were not eating together, we were ceaselessly exchanging texts while separately sharing lunch with others.

Those were the days… And then, as one day jumped from another to the next, a gulf formed between once close souls. The usual became rare. We were still constantly communicating, but I had this sinking feeling that our link, once thrilling, was becoming imagined, living only in the ephemeral.

Sure, I replied. The goodbye came belatedly. When I saw tears streaming down your face, I knew it was a matter of time. You were going to leave. You don’t know this, but I was never saying goodbye. We were still going to see each other. I had this thought that there was something between us. I cannot exactly pin it down, but that “something” was strong enough to bind me to you, you to me. I was sure of it.

What a fool I was. Your last days were the coldest. I tried to reach out, but you built an invisible wall so formidable I even discouraged myself to scale it. I’m busy, you said. Of course, of course. I begrudgingly let you be. Oftentimes I caught myself staring out into the open, thinking, why are we not having our final moments? One last lunch together as officemates? One last stroll around the environs while revisiting how the two of us found each other?

No, this was not goodbye, I defiantly told myself. But pain was creeping inwards. I tried to rid my mind of the fiendish thought that you owe me even just a fleeting replay of the past. As I let out numerous sighs to ease my difficulties, I gave up. I didn’t want to see you.

Now, here I am, walking to see you, just months after your unceremonious exit. I should not be surprised why you suddenly want to see me. You blow hot and cold on many things. It’s a fascinating trait of yours. I find it funny sometimes that you are so frustrated when someone close to you is like that, but you (maybe unconsciously) do the same way to others. You and your “quirks.”

As I sit across our small table and stare at you, I struggle to listen to your complaints about your new boss. I was then wrestling with this being inside my head nagging me to just tell you how I truly feel. Tell her how hurt you were during her last days, the being implored. Tell her she is an ungrateful, insensitive and dumb automaton. Tell her you’re glad that she’s not walking along the same halls you’re walking. Tell her.

I then retorted, Do I also tell her I miss her so much?!

The being stopped. Suddenly, you blurt out, Hey, are you alright? What’s on your mind? Oh right. You were in front of me. I can tell you right now if I want to. If I want to. I breathe.

Nothing.

Literary (Submission): 8 Anonymous People

8 Anonymous People on the moment they knew it was something else

1. “It was the day of the exams and we were reviewing the lesson in physics. We were arguing about what the Lenz's law indicates and he talked about it for 5 minutes with his hand gestures and all. It ended up not being in the test, but it didn't matter. I think he's the only person who could talk about something I disliked yet make me want to listen and know more about it.”

2. “Right from the beginning, I made the choice of going after her. I always knew she was something else. It's just that she already has someone else.”

3. “We were listening to the radio when Blank by Blank came up. It was a bad day but it instantly became better when he came up with the goofiest dance moves while singing along. I was cracking up the whole time and slowly regained calmness to see that he was sitting there and watching me laugh my heart out. He smiled. Right then and there I knew I wanted to be with someone who would dance like that just to see me happy.”

4. “As cliche as it sounds- he makes time stop whenever he laughs. It adds to the list of things that make the world a better place. It redeems the universe from all the negative.”

5. “I was crying because of something stupid and he was the first person to see and ask me if I was okay. The expression in his eyes when he asked was something you'd only get from someone who genuinely wanted to listen and stay. It was awkward but I felt that he wanted to give comfort. I felt that I had someone who cared.”

6. “It was the weekend and it was one of those days when I had the courage to send her a message on Facebook. We were close friends and talked often about different things in life. As the conversation was going, I accidentally pressed the button to make a video call. My heart jumped and to my surprise, she answered before I could cancel it. I ended up listening to her and her family blast out and sing along to OPM songs in the car for about 20 minutes. I felt how close and happy they were. I didn’t say a word, but I was smiling the whole time.”

7. “I always pray before I sleep. One night, I started praying for her safety and well-being –for God to help her with whatever she’s going through. I also did it the night after that, and the nights after that. It kind of became part of my routine to make sure I talked to Him about her. I’d wake up and see her the next morning, and know that my prayers are being answered.”

8. “We were walking to the ground floor of a mall. I’d always slow down just so she wouldn’t have to get tired keeping up with my pace, yet she’d still do because of the random stories she’d constantly blab about that would make her lose her breath. That time, she told me about how she dreamed of Zac Efron and how her dad kicked him out of the house. Part of the reason I love being with her is the way she’d tell me little things –things I don’t need to know, but things that make me know more about her. I hate walking to places, but doing it with her makes it less worse.”

Literary: For Better Days

When the universe chooses
To pull the currents,
Shake the earth,
And freeze the air,
Do not think
You are invincible.
You may not
turn the currents,
Still the shaking,
Or warm the air,
But the fact that you
are still standing
Is testament enough
That to be vulnerable
Is nothing to be ashamed of.

When the world dares
To turn their back on you,
kick you to the curb,
And push you six-feet under,
Do not think
You are indomitable.
You may not
Face them with indifference,
Stand up fast enough,
Or pull yourself up with ease,
But the fact that you
Are still staring humanity in the eye
Is evidence enough
That to be alive
Is nothing you can't handle.

When life glories
At the mistakes you have made,
Shortcomings too long to make up for,
And the failure of your choices,
Do not think
You are bulletproof.
You may not
Get it right the first time.
Be enough for some,
Or make the right choices,
But the fact that you
Are still alive today
Is reason enough
To make it through tomorrow.

I am the sea, the clouds
And everything in between
I am the life and death
Of reincarnated queens
I am every seed, and every drop
I am everything they need
I am mountains
Flourished forests
I am gravity
I am the purest soil
And the only hope
Of humanity
I am gentle, kind
To souls with sympathy
But then
I am capable
Of being a catastrophe
Sending out storms
Throwing flames
To people who have wronged me

I dare you to watch, see
As I conquer the world
With just a flick of a wrist
And one bent knee

So, if anyone asks
“Who do you want to be?”
Of all people
I'd choose me

Literary: Be You

A modern way to paint
Where your face is the canvas.
A palette of colorful make-up
You use to cover your natural beauty
To hide its innocence and purity,
To conceal the flaws they use against you.

A phony beauty pageant
Where you walk like a runway model.
But little do they know,
Behind that perfect body
Is a starving, suffering woman
Trying to fit into society’s definition of beauty

A bluff act of camaraderie
Where you show your stagy, fake self
Around a conceited circle of friends
Picking and browbeating on others
To be part of the popular clique.
To be accepted for who you’re not.

A false video game
Where you are the star
You let others have control over you
Because you think what they say is right.
Disregarding what you really want
To be far from someone you once knew.

Why would you want to change yourself
When you’ve got something that they don’t?
You’re unique, special in your own way
And that’s something they can’t take away.

Why would you try to be someone else?
When your flaws and weaknesses make you stand out
Not because they define you
But because you can overcome them.

So, it’s time
To put that maquillage off
Your face is too beautiful
To cover with make-up colorettes

It’s time
To gain a few pounds
Your body is precious
So, you better take care of it.

It’s time
To let go of that untidy, crazy you
You are truly special
So be proud of it.

It’s time
To start to make a change
You are one of a kind
So don’t be ashamed of just being you

Literary: You are the Waters

You are the waters
You are the oceans
You are the seas
You are the beaches

People will marvel at the colors
Of your horizon at every sunset and sunrise
People will be filled with wonder
And amazement
At the sight of you

People will learn how to conquer your currents
A few will succeed
Most will fail
Despite this
Some will still keep coming back to you

People will poison you
And pollute your body

They will be scared of your strong winds
And will try to challenge you
But
No one can win against you
Learning this
They will
Regret that they even dared to

People will leave footsteps on your shores
But at the end
Your waters
Will always wash them
Away

"...Two, three...Two, three..."

As you were the one
Who witnessed my first few steps
Toward what I am now

Pas de Deux
From then on
With a gentle hand
And sure steps
Ever graceful
You led on

Plié
You taught me how to bend to the heavy
And just spring
Back up again

Balancé
You taught me to stay
In equilibrium
Despite all
That burden me

Écarté
You taught me how to separate myself
From the stillness
Of the normal
Quatre
You keep pushing me to go onstage
And face everyone, everything that terrifies me
No matter how ready I am

En pointe
And somehow
Each and every time
I trip and fall
You never fail
To pick me back up

Elevé
And
Make me
Try again

Literary: Pride and Love

When he was born,
he breathed air
that had a stench
of ire and animosity;
He opened his eyes
to a world limited
to the two sides of a coin.

When he was 3,
his mind was set
to liking cars,
to becoming a soldier,
to loving the opposite sex;
he was limited.

When he was 10,
his heart wanted not
what he was told.
Though it was disobedience
he carried on,
followed what he desired.

When he was 13,
he regretted his decision
of going against currents
for he only drowned
in fleer and mockery
from a naive society.

When he was 16,
the waves worsened.
This time he was still,
stood for what he loved,
held tears inside
for they weren't for men.

When he was 18,
he was stronger.
He tried to believe
hoped in humanity;
he continued living
with his head held high.

When he was 21,
out he came from the closet,
beating the ignorance
of this cruel world,
waving the rainbow flag
of pride and love.

Literary: Gentleman

A suit without crease
No blemish, no flaw
With a neatly trussed bow
You are prim and perfect

All eyes are on you
But you keep your mask on
Only showing your eerie ways
That make us fall-
In curiosity and in love

But behind the mask,
The suit and the tie
Is a soul learning-
And yearning to love

The world expects that you are wise
From the theories of science
To the ways of math
But they cannot adjure
That you can never stumble
And will never be wrong in love
You cannot be blamed
For inadequately giving
What you weren’t able to have
Since you were 3.

People will only see the stain
From the heart that you have broken
They’ll say you’re rude-
“Where has your nobility gotten?”

But do not remove that suit
Do not listen to the world
Pick yourself up, and dust off
Go, and hurt no more.

Literary: Virtuous People

I’ve committed sin
And folly
Now my prayers
Have gone unholy

I am told I am filthy
And that I’ve gone crazy
But it’s fine
You are as well, anyway

So if you deem yourself righteous
Come save me with your deity
Pray for my soul’s saving
Or save me with your glory

Literary: I Don't Know

In life one will meet
Those who will pass them by,
Those who will amount to only moments,
Those who are bound by blood,
Those who matter,
Those who won’t,
And those who did

Who are they to you?
Do you see them
As clearly as you see
Yourself?

We are, in fact,
If looked into,
Fabricated
By our own aspirations
And the expectations of others
Upon us

She smiles
Yet she knows of pain

He jokes
Yet he knows of grief

She laughs with you
Knowing there could be no other moment
To be happy

He makes use of the time he has
Knowing he’ll go home in tears

But you only see the smiles
The sparkling eyes

How deceptive
Those moments of laughter

Because that’s how life should be
Happy
And the world will fall
If the walls we built around us crumbles
As society finally realizes
How broken we really are

We hurt
Because of the realization
That man is expendable
As the universal being made man superfluous
Quick to break and easy to replace

How can you expect someone to be any more real
When the only certainty is desolation
And what’s made up is our cool façade

Built on the hope that maybe one day
When we take off our masks
It will reveal smiling faces, content hearts
Not the misshapen appearance
Of a dispirited soul

To him, she is lovely
To her, he is kind
To them, they are content
To you, I am the one who smiles

Tell me
Do you see me
As clearly as I see you?

Literary: Relics

I went through my things and stumbled upon
The relics I've been trying to hide-
Odds and ends of what has come and gone
Covered in dust from the passing of time.

My feet sink into the embrace of fine sand,
Bracing for a sense of longing uncalled for
I shake my sandals and trudge along the path
That my footprints have once left before.

In my hands, rests the world we shared together
Photos old and forgotten, as stale as lost bone.
But these figures are but lights etched upon paper,
These fossils no longer have a life of their own.

I could no longer remember what made us laugh,
In the happier times of these photographs.
They continue to remind me of how what I once had,
Have now gone and eroded to dust in my hand.

Matagal tayong nagkatitigan
At ang pagpikit ng isa’y inaabangan
Ang tagal mo bago kumurap
Parang ‘di maabot-abot na pangarap.

Nasa iyo lamang ang aking atensyon
Tila walang konsiyertong nagaganap noon,

Sabay sabi:

“Excuse me po sir, kanina pa kayo
Masyado na kayong nanggugulo
Mangyari lamang pong lumabas na kayo
Dahil marami na kayong naiistorbo!”

Literary: Last Supper

There have been rumors of a wandering chef who doesn’t charge coin, but rather one’s story in exchange for a meal. When I was walking home one night, I noticed a silhouette in the distance, gesturing for me to wait. A few meters away, the lamp post’s dim light revealed a man in white, carrying an assortment of pots and pans. The man smiled and politely asked, “Care for a meal?”

In two shakes of a lamb’s tail, the man was able to set up a rotisserie and a cooking pot. Effortlessly, he skewered a few pieces of meat onto the spit and chopped up a couple of potatoes.

“What are you making?” I asked curiously.

“Stew,” answered the man.

Roughly 20 minutes later, the man declared that the meal was ready and urged me to take the first taste. He handed me a bowl filled with his stew. Although I was reluctant, I still decided to try it, anyway. “What could go wrong?” I thought. The moment I tasted the dish, I thought I was in heaven. It was simply marvelous!

“Seconds please!” I said, excitedly. However, the man proceeded to block the bowl with his ladle.

“I believe you owe me a story,” he said.

I told the man my life story. There wasn’t much to tell, really. I was a simple salaryman, who had been fired for the third time this month. If there was anything remarkable about me, it would be my luck and how terrible it was.

The man seemed slightly dissatisfied with my tale, as he seemed to stare at me indifferently, as if what I was saying was worthless.

“I told you I was completely ordinary,” I said to break the silence.

“It just wasn’t remotely entertaining, or interesting,” he said, coldly. “But a story’s a story,” He added, now gesturing to the pot.

As I went for seconds, I asked the man to share some of his stories, to which he happily agreed. He started with the tale of a farmer who struggled to make his crops grow, but who actually forgot to sow the seeds in the first place. He then followed up with a man feigning as a tax collector, to pay his debts to an actual tax collector. Lastly, he told me about a couple who only discovered that they were cousins on the day of their wedding.

After a while, the man had already gone through countless stories, and I have finished the entire pot of stew.

“Finished at last?” he asked.

“Yeah. Hey, if you don’t mind, could you teach me how to make it?” I replied.

I felt the air turn cold and eerie. A chill ran down my spine as the man uttered the following words:

“It would be better if you were IN it.”

Literary: Hey PPL!

“Hey PPL! Pakidala raw yung resibo sa Tuesday sabi ni mam. See you tom! – GM. #ClassPresidentDuties”

Tsk.

“Hey PPL! Lang Hw kaya tulog nang maaga.
@VicePres @Secretary: Meeting tom lunch time. rm 111 see u. – GM.”

Sana PM na lang po.

“Hey PPL. Sorry absent. But don’t worry - GM #SickDay”

Dami mo namang iniwang trabaho sa’kin. Sana nagsabi ka para naka-prepare ako. ‘Di tuloy ako nakakain ng lunch. Mukhang hindi pa ako makakapag-dinner nito. Hays.

--------

“Hey PPL! Payment para sa prom. Bawal mag-promposal kung hindi pa bayad. –GM #LangDate”

“Hey PPL! By pair daw ‘yung pag-dissect ng froggie.

“Hey PPL!!!!! 2 DAYS B4 PROM!!! BEHAVE AH!!!! GOOD LUCK SA MGA MAGCO-COTILLION!!!
@VicePresident: BE MY DATE? –GM.”

----

“Hey PPL!!!!! 2 DAYS B4 PROM!!! BEHAVE AH!!!! GOOD LUCK SA MGA MAGCO-COTILLION!!!
@VicePresident: BE MY DATE? –GM.”

NAKAKAINIS.

Duh? Officer din kaya ako!

“OO NA CLASS PRES. DATE NA KITA” (Message Sending Failed)
“Your current balance is PHP0.00. Please reload immediately ” TALAGANG NGAYON PA AH.
---

“Vice President, you’re late again?” sigaw ni Adviser. Papagalitan na naman ako.

“Sorry po, ma’am. Pero pwede po bang mag-announce?” Announcement? Dapat dadaan muna sa’kin ‘yun ah.

“Okay na pala ma’am, sent na po pala GM ko.”

“Hey PPL! PROM NA BUKAS! BEHAVE AH!

At
Ang mga umaasa pa rin dito

Mga taong takot nang magmahal tulad mo
At
Mga taong umaasa pa rin gaya ko

Of all the smiles I’ve seen
Yours was the loveliest

Of all memories I gained
Time with you was the sweetest

Of all the stories I told
Ours was my favorite

Of all the chances I took
You were the one I had to miss

Of all the silences I heard
Yours was the most deafening

Of all the rejections I received
Yours was the hardest

Of all my regrets
You were the biggest

Of all the people I loved
I loved you the most

Literary: Kalawakan

Dahil tayo’y iisa.

She was not
Her labels
Not the price tag of her possessions
He was not
His reputation
Not the medals framed on his wall
She was not
Her mistakes
Not some homework to be graded with checkmarks and x’s
He was not
The pains of his past
Not the hearsay of so few
She was not
The fears of her future
Not the expectations of so many
Neither was he
The grand finale to my song
Neither was she
The final piece to my puzzle
Although I always hoped
She could’ve been.
 He could’ve been.
Who was she then…
  Who was he then…
to me?
Was she
My dream-
A delusional fantasy where I’d run to and hide?
Was he
My aspiration-
A mountain so distant I could barely glimpse its peak?

Who was I to her…
Who was I to him…
in the first place?
Was I
Her shoulder to lean on
Was I
His light in the shadows
Just as she was mine?
Just as he was mine?
And yet…
She was also my conscience
A storm of who’s, what’s, and why’s
He was also my mirror
Both genuine and insecure
To her
To him
I must have been
A plight
Of nightmares and of daydreams
A scripted act
Of tolerant truth and gentle lies
More so…
I’ve always loved who she was to me
I’ve always loved who he was to me
I’ve always loved how we were.

Could she…
Could he…
have wanted something more?
