News Feature: #Gradu18: UPIS Batch 2018 holds first ever Internship Culminating Activity



After surviving around three months of working on shifts and learning new things in their respective on-campus internship sites, this school year’s Grade 12 students have finally completed the hours needed for their first semester internship inside the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) campus.

To give them a preview of what it is like in the world of work, the students were deployed to different colleges, institutions, and offices according to their chosen academic track. Those from the Applied Sciences and Engineering track were assigned to the College of Architecture, University Health Service, Interactive Learning Center - Diliman, Marine Science Institute, and the Institute of Civil Engineering.

On the other hand, students from the Business and Entrepreneurship track were assigned to the UP Balay Kalinaw, University Food Service (UFS), University Hotel, College of Home Economics, and UP Bahay ng Alumni.

Lastly, students from the Social Sciences and Humanities track served their internship hours at the Diliman Information Office, College of Mass Communication, College of Arts and Letters, College of Social Work and Community Development, and the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino.

The interns courageously faced a variety of tasks and challenges presented by these 15 work sites. As a venue for sharing each other’s experiences, each track held a culminating activity for their Grade 11 counterparts on December 11.

The group of interns per internship site prepared a 3-5 minute presentation about the jobs they were given, challenges they faced, and people they worked with the purpose of providing the Grade 11 students an idea of what to expect when it is their turn to do the internship.

As an opportunity for them to share their stories and personal experiences from the first ever on-campus internship in the history of UPIS, they talked about what have learned as interns and gave the next batch a brief background on the jobs that they will most likely encounter. Hopefully, this will serve as a guide to help students from the lower batch in picking the internship site they will eventually apply for next year.

There isn’t one definite description to depict the seniors’ emotions, expectations, and testimonies concerning this event.
“Kabado kasi since batch natin ang pinaka-unang mag-oorganize ng ganitong activity, hope kong may makuhang wisdom ang susunod na batch sa ibabahagi nating mga experience galing sa internship at makatulong ito sa pagpili nila ng kanilang site,” said Stephen Sanchez from the Applied Sciences and Engineering track when asked about his feelings towards the event.

Kate Marcelino from the Business and Entrepreneurship track added, “Excited ako na mag-share ng experiences ko tapos sana makatulong ito sa performance ng mga susunod na batch sa darating na internship nila.”

“Masaya yung naging experience ko sa UFS. Sana nga maraming mag-intern dito next year. Pero isa lang advice ko sa mga mapupunta dito: matuto kayong makisama”, said Aichel Crisostomo, also from the Business and Entrepreneurship track, giving us her own little preview of what she shared during the culminating activity.

Although other high school students have yet to experience the internship seminar, and the whole internship deployment at that, they will eventually take up this challenge. Feature: IG-worthy Places In UPIS



Sabi ng matatanda, iba na ang panahon ngayon. Siguro nga totoo. Laganap na ang tweets, vlogs, at pictures, kung saan instant nating naibabahagi ang mga ganap sa ating buhay. At kung sumasabay ka sa tech trend, alam mong sa dami ng apps na pagpipilian ay may nag-angkin na ng trono sa pinakasikat na photo at video sharing app:

ANG INSTAGRAM.

Maraming tao, maging mga taga-UPIS, ang mayroong account dito. At siyempre dahil diyan, palagi kaming naghahanap ng lugar kung saan pwede kaming mga instagram users na magpaka-candid, fierce, artsy o kahit maging amateur high-fashion models. Sa kabutihang palad, puno ng magagandang lugar ang UPIS para sa mga taong nagbabalak na pagandahin o bigyan ng bagong timpla ang kanilang IG feed.

1. BRICKS

Walang estudyante sa UPIS ang hindi pa nakakapagpakuha ng litrato sa lugar na mas kilala natin bilang "bricks" o brick wall. Tampok itong puntahan ng mga estudyante lalo na kung sila'y may mga aktibidad sa paaralan tulad ng UPIS Week, Buwan ng Wika, Culminating Activity sa Musika, at marami pang iba. Nangingibabaw ang kulay ng sinumang pumuwesto roon, sa bricks na medyo mapusyaw ang pagkapula. Dagdag pa rito, hindi ka na mangangailangan pa ng dagdag na pailaw dahil sapat na ang lighting na binibigay ng araw.

2. UPIS SIGNAGE

Pagpasok pa lamang sa ating paaralan, bubungad na ang pagkalaki-laki, pagkaputi-puti, at pagkalapad-lapad na mga letra ng U-P-I-S. Makikita ito sa harap ng eskwelahan, kalapit ng rebulto ni Lorna. Ito'y isa sa mga lugar na palaging nakikita sa litrato ng mga taong bumibisita sa UPIS sapagkat perpekto talaga ito para sa groupfies o group pictures. Dagdag pa diyan, may natural na liwanag, berdeng landscape, at matitingkad na halamang nakapalibot at lalong nagpapaganda sa lugar. Kaya naman huwag na huwag kayong aalis sa UPIS nang hindi kayo nakakakuha ng kahit isang selfie rito!

3. PARKING LOT

Makikita ito sa likod ng Administration Building sa tapat ng parking lot. Ang lakas maka-gubat ng background hindi ba? Aakalain nilang nasa gitna ka ng kagubatan pero ang hindi nila alam ay nasa loob lang ‘yan ng UPIS. Nagbibigay rin ito ng mala-nature lover vibe na babagay sa IG feed ninuman!

4. ROCKMAN

Idagdag mo na rin ang lugar na ‘to sa nature-loving mong IG feed. Matatagpuan ang Rockman sa likod ng Administration Building. Kaunting sakripisyo’t pasensya lang sa mga naka-slacks o palda sa pag-upo sa maputik at makating damuhan dahil sulit naman ang inyong IG-worthy post.

5. HALLWAY SA TAPAT NG CLINIC

May three-point perspective kayong makikita at samahan mo lang ng magandang pose ay talagang mapapa-#feedgoals ka na sa IG! Iba talaga ang istruktura ng mga lugar dito sa UPIS sapagkat nailapat pa nila ang ilang aspeto sa arkitektura at sining. Ang lakas maka-artsy, hindi ba?

6. UPIS GYM

Pangalawa sa huli ay ang pinakabago’t pinakamalinis na UPIS gymnasium! Maraming parte ng gym ang magandang pagkuhaan ng larawan at isa na rito ang mga pintuan nito. Kaunting side-view lang at tamang anggulo ang kailangan o ‘di kaya pwede ring gawing background ang mga pintuan dahil sa simple ngunit malakas na datingan ng disenyo nito. Tingnan natin kung hindi mapa-wow ang followers mo at hanapin kung saan ka nagpapicture.


7. HAGDAN

Madalas itong dinaraanan ngunit hindi nakikita ng marami ang kagandahan ng hagdang ito ng UPIS. Ito ang bubungad sa inyo papasok ng Academic Building. Kasimplehan, malawak na espasyo, at dagdag na levelling o blocking ang naibibigay nito para sa mga taong gustong magpakuha ng litrato. Kalimitang ginagamit ito ng malalaking grupo tulad ng varsity teams ng Track and Field at Swimming, pero pwede pa rin itong gamitin ninuman lalo na ng mga gustong magdagdag ng mas kakaibang anggulo sa kanilang litrato. Pagdating sa IG-worthy posts, hindi kayo bibiguin ng natural aesthetic look na nabibigay ng mga halama’t bulaklak na pumapaligid sa lugar.

Sa pagkalaki-laki ng mga gusali at sa lawak ng lupain ng buong UPIS, hinding-hindi kayo dapat malimitahan sa walong lugar na inilista namin. Paganahin niyo lang ang inyong imahinasyon upang magkaroon pa ng mas maraming ideya para sa susunod ninyong photoshoot. Opinion: Indie-mand?






Kamakailan lamang ay idinaos ang Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino o PPP na nilahukan ng labindalawang independent o indie films mula sa iba’t ibang genre. Nagtagal ito ng isang linggo, mula Agosto 16 hanggang 22, at ipinalabas ang mga pelikulang ito sa buong bansa. Dinagsa ito ng maraming manunuod at tagapagtangkilik na silang gumawa ng ingay sa social media kaya’t mas marami ang nagkaroon ng interes. Noong papalapit na ang katapusan ng pagdiriwang, marami ang nagnais na mapahaba pa ang screening ng mga pelikula. Dahil dito, nadinig ang kagustuhan ng samu’t saring mga manonood at napahaba ang screening time ng tatlo sa pinakasikat na pelikula sa PPP, ang Patay na si Hesus, Bar Boys, at 100 Tula Para Kay Stella.

Talagang marapat lamang na pinahahalagahan ang Filipino independent/local films katulad ng pagpapahalagang ibinibigay natin sa mainstream films. Marami na sa mga palabas na ito ang nakapagbigay-karangalan sa ating bansa sa pamamagitan ng paglahok sa mga patimpalak at pag-uwi ng karangalan mula sa mga prestihiyosong film festivals sa ibang bansa. Halimbawa, nakuha ng pelikula ni Lav Diaz na Ang Babaeng Humayo ang pinakamataas na karangalan sa Venice Film Festival noong 2016. Dahil sa mga ganitong tagumpay, mas nakikilala ang Pilipino sa kanilang husay sa pagbuo at paglikha ng mga pelikula.

Dapat ding bigyan ng kaukulang pansin ang indie films sapagkat sinasalamin ng mga ito ang kultura at realidad sa bansa. Madalas, patok ito sa panlasang Pinoy dahil ang ginagamit nilang iskrip at istorya ay sumasalaysay sa mga problema at buhay ng Pilipino. Dulot nito, nagiging bukas ang isipan ng mga manonood sa mga isyung panlipunan na hindi lubusang natatalakay sa mainstream films.

Sa kabilang banda, naipakikita rin naman ng mainstream movies ang mga nabanggit, madalas sa mas magaan at kaaya-ayang paraan. Ngunit dapat tandaan, na ang pangunahing layunin ng mainstream films ay kumita, kung kaya’t maaaring mawala ang katapatan ng mga ito sa pagbibigay ng makabuluhan at orihinal na istorya.

Hindi rin lingid sa ating kaalaman na mas kaunti ang badyet ng indie films sa produksyon. Mas nakakahanap kasi ng puhunan at resources ang nagproprodyus ng mainstream movies sapagkat mayroong malalaking studios na sumusuporta sa kanila. Tinatangkilik ang ganitong mga pelikula ng mga ordinaryong manonood dahil sa mga kilalang artista, epektibong promosyon, at mas mahabang oras ng pagpapalabas sa sinehan na hindi nagagawa ng independent films. Sa kabila ng mga salik na nabannggit, nakalilikha pa rin ng de-kalidad na pelikula ang independent filmmakers, na siyang patunay na hindi hadlang ang limitadong resources sa pagpapamalas ng talento ng mga Pilipino.

Nakatutuwang makita na sa mga nagdaang taon ay unti-unti nang nakikilala at nakikipagsabayan ang indie films sa mainstream movies, kung saan nabibigyan ito ng pansin at suporta. Dagdag pa rito, naisasama na rin ang mga ito sa lokal na film festivals, na noo’y puno ng mainstream movies tulad ng MMFF o Metro Manila Film Festival, kagaya noong nakaraang taon. Dahil sa positibong pagtanggap ng mga manonood sa mga ganitong klase ng palabas, mas lalo silang nakilala at nabibigyang-halaga.

Dagdag pa rito, ang pagtangkilik sa mga pelikulang Pilipino partikular na sa indie films, ay nakakatulong sa lokal na industriya ng pelikula sa ating bansa sa maraming paraan. Isa na sa mga ambag nito ay ang pagpapa-unlad sa mga taong bumubuo sa mga pelikula tulad ng mga artista, direktor, mga manunulat at iba pa. Nabibigyan sila ng oportunidad na maipamalas ang kanilang talento sa ibang bansa na maaaring magresulta sa mas marami pang proyekto at makapagbigay-karangalan sa Pilipinas.

Sa kabuuan, ang independent films ay dapat pahalagahan at bigyan ng suporta sapagkat malaki ang naiaambag nila sa pagsulong ng sining sa bansa. Nakakakuha sila ng papuri’t tagumpay sa iba’t ibang international film festivals. Sinasalamin nila ang kultura ng mga Pilipino, at kahit sa maliit na badyet kumpara sa mainstream movies ay de-kalidad ang mga pelikulang nabubuo ng mga tao sa likod ng bawat palabas.

Ang mga pelikulang ito ay tulad lamang din ng mainstream movies na binuo at pinaghirapan ng mga Pilipino para sa mga Pilipino. Kaya naman, ipakita natin ang ating suporta sa mga pelikulang Pinoy, mapa-mainstream man ito o indie. // nina Jo-ev Guevarra, Zach Jugo

ASK. MC: Isang Salita para sa Isang Taon



Para sa UPIS students, nagbago na ang ibig sabihin ng pagdating ng buwan ng Hunyo. Dati’y hudyat ito ng bagong simula, isang bagong akademikong taon. Ngunit ngayon, ito ay buwan na ng nalalapit na pagtatapos ng kanilang klase at pagsisimula ng “summer break”. Na-implementa na rin ang K-12 sa mga paaralan sa taong ito at hindi naiiba ang UPIS dito. Sa kasalukuyan, mayroon nang kauna-unahang Grado 11 sa paaralan na binubuo ng UPIS Batch 2018.

Kaugnay nito, hiningan namin ang ilan sa kanila ng isang salitang makapaglalarawan sa naging karanasan nila nitong akademikong taon.

Feature: How to be you?


Maraming mga estudyante ang nasasabik sa pagsapit ng Marso sapagkat ito ay hudyat na ng pagtatapos ng kanilang klase. Ibig sabihin, malalaman na kung sino ang mga naging natatanging mag-aaral na pararangalan dahil sa kanilang kahusayan. Espesyal o kaya ay naiiba ang UPIS Parangal sa taong ito dahil sa Academic Calendar shift. Sa halip kasi na Marso, ginanap ang Parangal 2017 nitong nakaraang Mayo 5 na may temang “Iskolar ng Bayan, Manindigan sa Karapatang Pantao”.

Mayroong mga natatanging mag-aaral sa bawat asignatura at mayroon ding mga Manlalaro ng taon, Model Student at Leadership Awardee. Sa taong ito, nakamit ni Wenona Catubig ng 10-Yakal ang Model Student Award at si Roan Ticman naman mula sa 10-Molave ang nakakuha ng Leadership Award. Isang malaking karangalan ang mahirang o mapili bilang Model Student at Lider ng isang batch, kaya naman hindi masama na hangarin ng marami na makakuha ng ganitong pagkilala.

Ano nga ba ang mga hakbang o mga katangian na dapat taglayin upang maging isa ring natatanging mag-aaral tulad nila?

Ayon kay Wenona Catubig, ang pagiging isang modelong estudyante ay hindi lamang nakukuha sa pagkakaroon ng matataas na grado sa eksam, sa aktibong pagsali sa mga organisasyon sa eskuwelahan, at maging sa pagkakaroon ng perpektong attendance sa klase. Nangangailangan din ito ng higit na kumpiyansa sa sarili, positibong pag-iisip at ang pagiging resilient sa anumang dumating na trabaho’t gawain.

Hindi naman naiiba sa ating lahat si Wenona pagdating sa pag-aaral. Tulad ng marami sa atin, binibigyan din niya ng oras ang kaniyang sarili para magpahinga mula sa sunod-sunod na pagrerebyu lalo na sa panahon ng periodic exams. Dagdag pa rito, hindi rin niya pinababayaan ang sarili na tuluyang “mabaliw” sa lahat ng trabahong dumadagsa sa kaniya kung kaya’t mas pinipili niya maging chill sa pagharap sa mga ito. Isa rin sa mga bagay na lubusang tumulong sa kaniyang pag-aaral ay ang kaniyang planner sapagkat dahil dito ay mas nagiging organisado’t maayos ang lahat ng gawaing kailangan niyang simulan at tapusin.

Sa pagtamasa naman ng kaniyang karangalan, isa sa mga naging motibasyon ni Wenona ay ang kaniyang nanay. Isa pa rito ay ang paulit-ulit na sinasabi sa kaniya ng kaniyang mga magulang na ang edukasyon lamang ang makatutulong sa kaniyang sarili para maka-angat sa buhay. At maging ang simpleng biro lamang sa kanilang pamilya na siya ang magiging unang abogado sa kanila ang nakapagtulak din sa kaniya upang magpursigi pa lalong gawin ang lahat ng kaniyang makakaya.

Para sa mga nangangarap ding umakyat ng enteblado at maparangalan katulad ni Wenona, ang payo niya ay simple lamang. Sinabi niyang hanapin natin ang motibasyon na magsisilbing dahilan para tayo’y patuloy na ganahan, hindi mapagod at mawalan ng pag-asa sa pagtatamasa ng karangalang katulad nito, na hindi naman imposibleng maabot ng bawat isa sa atin.

Ngayong alam na natin ang mga katangiang dapat taglayin ng isang model student, kilalanin naman natin ang nagkamit nng Leadership award na si Roan Ticman.

“Background”. Ito ang salitang ibinigay sa amin ni Roan nang amin siyang tanungin kung anong klaseng leader ba siya. Ayon sa kanya, siya ang klase ng pinuno na mas pinipiling magtrabaho sa likod ng kurtina kumbaga “behind the scenes” o mas kilalang “lowkey” sa millennial language, na siyang kaiba sa ibang mga lider na mas sanay mamuno sa “spotlight”. Dahil para sa kanya, ang isang mabuting namumuno ay dapat ding magaling sumunod, ika nga sa tanyag na kasabihang “to be able to lead, one must learn to follow”. Sa ganitong paraan, makikita at malalaman at maiintindihan daw ng isang lider ang mga nangyayari sa kanyang mga pinamumunuan, dahilan para mas magkaroon sila ng mabuting working relationship.

Dahil sa nature ng trabaho ng isang lider, normal ding makaranas sila ng mga problema at mahihirap na gawain. At para kay Roan, ang pinakamahirap na task na ipinagawa sa kanya ay nang mag-facilitate siya sa Mural painting sa Balik-tanaw UPIS Week noong nakaraang taon dahil nagkasabay-sabay daw ang mga activities noon kaya naman kinailangan niyang mag take in charge.

Truth be told, napakahirap maging isang lider sapagkat responsibilidad mo ang lahat ng iyong pinamumunuan ganundin ang kanilang mga gawain. Ngunit naniniwala si Roan na sa pamamagitan ng tamang time management at paggawa sa mga bagay-bagay one step at a time, makakayanan ng isang pinuno na pamunuan nang mabuti ang kanyang team.

KAT & GAT results released


Results of the 2017 Kindergarten Admission Test (KAT) and 2017 Grade 7 Admission Test (GAT) were released last May 8 and April 10, respectively.

The top 40 out of 1,346 non-UP dependent applicants and top 60 out of 118 UP dependents were admitted into Kindergarten based on their scores in the KAT. Qualifiers will comprise Batch 2030 this Academic Year 2017-2018.

On the other hand, 15 lateral entrants and 8 VAAS Program entrants were accepted into Batch 2023, the incoming freshmen in the next academic year.

The admission tests were held last March 4 and March 18, 20, 25, and 27 for the GAT and KAT, respectively.

Sa panahon ngayon kung saan napapadali ang lahat sa isang simpleng click, mabilis na nating nagagawa ang mga bagay-bagay na mistulang imposibleng gawin noon.

Dumami ang mga paraan ng paglilibang natin sa sarili, bumilis ang pagpunta natin sa ibang lugar, bumilis ang pakikipagkomunikasyon natin sa ibang tao. Lumawak ang circle of friends natin dahil sa mga Social Networking Sites o SNS . Hindi maikakailang karamihan, kundi man halos lahat tayo, ay gumagamit na ng iba’t ibang SNS tulad ng Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, at marami pang iba. Dito, naipapahayag natin sa mas mabilis at madaling paraan ang ating ginagawa, kinakain, lokasyon, mga pinoproblema, at iba pang nais ibahagi sa ating friends at followers.

Sa kabila nito, dapat alam natin kung paano gamitin nang tama at ligtas ang mga SNS. ‘Di naman lingid sa kaalaman ng lahat na kabi-kabila ang nabibiktima ng iresponsableng paggamit ng mga ito. Para manatiling ligtas sa paggamit ng Social Media, mahalagang tandaan ang mga sumusunod na paalalang pang-think-before-you-click.

1. Limitahan ang impormasyon

Sa SNS posting, hindi mo dapat ilagay ang lahat ng bagay tungkol sa iyong sarili. Iwasan ding maglagay ng personal information dahil sa panahong sumali ka sa social media, nagiging publiko ang impormasyon. Maaaring manakaw dito ang iyong pagkatao o identidad at magamit ito sa masasamang gawain. Tandaan, ang lahat ng ilalagay mo online, makikita at mababasa ng maraming tao.

2. Huwag makikipag-usap kung kani-kanino

Malaki ang mundo ng social media. Maraming kang taong makakasalamuha, makikita, at makikilala. Gayunpaman, laging dapat tandaan na mag-ingat sa mga taong kinakausap. Hindi mo dapat kinakaibigan o kinakausap ang mga taong hindi mo kilala. Huwag na huwag makipagpalagayan ng loob sa mga taong bagong friend mo lang. Hindi dahil mabait ang hitsura o magaan silang kausap ay mabuting tao na sila. Hindi ka nakasisiguro sa mga pakay niya, maaaring may iba pa siyang motibo.

Iwasan ding ipagyabang ang mga bagong gamit dahil baka magkaroon ng negatibong pagtingin sa iyo ang tao o magamit ito sa masama tulad ng pagnanakaw.

4. Siguraduhing totoo ang iyong sasabihin

Maraming tao ang napapahamak sa pagbabanggit ng maling datos sa kanilang posts. Kaya naman, bago ka magpasyang ito’y i-post, subukan mo munang mag-fact check nang masigurong ang mga detalyeng iyong ilalagay ay totoo. Hindi mo lamang tinutulungan ang sarili mo, tinutulungan mo rin ang iba na malaman ang katotohanan.

5. Huwag kang magpopost kung buburahin mo rin

Huwag mo nang i-post ang mga bagay na sa tingin mo’y hindi mo kayang panindigan. Alalahanin, maaaring nabura ito online, ngunit posibleng na-save na ito sa devices at isipan ng mga tao.


Alam nating lahat na ang social media ay isang lugar kung saan malaya tayong makapagpapahayag ng ating mga opinyon, narararamdaman, at naiisip. Ngunit hindi naman ibig sabihin na maaari na nating ipost ang lahat dito. Tandaan na pag-isipan nang dalawa o tatlong ulit bago ang pindutin ang Post button. Known for being the Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio is located in the heart of the mountains of Benguet. It is an elevated plateau that rises 1500 meters above sea level, giving it an average of 18-20 degrees centigrade climate. It is also a place where tourist attractions such as The Mansion, Camp John Hay, Wright and Burnham Park, and the ever-famous lion head are located. Affordable and readily available fresh fruits and vegetables, delicious strawberry taho, and the Harrison Road night market are only some of the many reasons why this place turned into a popular summer getaway. A lot of us might have already visited and felt the cool Baguio breeze, but what most of us might not know is the scarring story behind the city’s present beauty.

Almost 27 years ago on July 16, 1990, at 4:26 p.m., people there were caught off guard.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 literally shook people residing in Central Luzon and provinces around the Cordillera Region. It was recorded that the epicenter of the quake was in Nueva Ecija and the shaking lasted for about a minute that resulted to 15 billion worth of damages and a death toll of around 2,412. Among the provinces that were affected, Baguio was the most drastically damaged.

Buildings such as the 6-story building of Christian College collapsed, trapping around 250 students inside it. Rescuers spent days trying to retrieve bodies that were under the ruins of various buildings and about 1000 bodies were recovered and a thousand more people suffered from serious injuries. A few of them were found alive but many of them died of dehydration.

The famous Hyatt Terraces Plaza suffered the most casualties among all commercial buildings, killing 50 people as its terrace fell down to the lobby. Also, the Nevada Hotel was unbelievably ripped in half and the Baguio Park Hotel was a complete wreck. Even the University of Baguio (UB) didn’t survive the quake after the building’s supporting structure crashed to the ground, killing 23 people who were mostly students. Skyworld Condominium, Commercial Center, The Royal Inn, and the Baguio Hilltop Hotel were also destroyed aside from the residential areas that surrounded the whole city.

This disaster traumatized the citizens of Baguio to an extent where they slept outside their houses for fear of being pinned down by huge blocks of cement from infrastructures that could possibly kill them. They never once thought that a place as innocent and as peaceful as Baguio, could have ever experienced such a nightmare.

With everyone’s life at stake, city-wide earthquake drills, such as the Metro Manila Shake Drill, were held on July 22, 2016. It was organized by the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC) in its desire to “promote a culture of preparedness among Metro Manila residents” after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) alerted the public with the possible occurrence of the Big One.

According to the director of PHIVOLCS Renato Solidum, in a news report from the Philippine Star, “The Big One” is a 7.2 earthquake that will arise from the West Valley Fault, predominantly affecting Metro Manila and the provinces surrounding it. In line with this, it was also stated in the report that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for PHIVOLCS and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted a study in 2004 which shows that an earthquake with this magnitude could kill 34,000 people and harm 100,000 individuals.

It only implies that what happened in 1990 is not without a doubt, a possibility here in Metro Manila. And the effects that this potential earthquake have could be even worse, given that cities within the 100-kilometer fault line have more high-rise buildings and infrastructures compared to what was in Baguio back then.

That is why we should all be prepared and knowledgeable enough to be ready in times of sudden calamities like this, even more now that nearly two days ago, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 was felt in different intensities in cities and provinces near Manila. Although no damages and deaths were reported, let it be a wake-up call to prepare us for the uncertainties that might come unexpectedly in our ways.

That is why we all should remember what happened in Baguio. Because it only proves that no one is safe from Mother Earth’s wrath and we are all powerless in choosing our own fate when it’s her turn to decide. We should always be mindful of the fact that earthquakes and other disasters aren’t just a thing of the past but possibilities that can happen right now, in the present, at this time, maybe even while you’re reading this.

We all should remember what happened in Baguio 27 years ago. Because it only proves that no one is safe from Mother Earth’s wrath and we are all powerless in choosing our own fate when it’s her turn to decide. More than two decades have passed since the love story of an odd girl living in a small village and a cursed prince enchanted the hearts of viewers. Now, sixteen years later, Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast will take you on a magical journey filled with fascinating animations and Broadway vibes that will make you want to sing, dance, live, and love.

Launched in the country last March 16, the movie was warmly welcomed by fans and newcomers alike. Years after playing Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson stars as the lovely Belle who unexpectedly meets the frightening Beast, played by Dan Stevens. Celebrities such as Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf from Disney’s Frozen, provide the comedic side of the movie while the narcissistic evil antagonist Gaston is brought to life by Luke Evans. Joining the remarkable cast are popular personalities Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ewan McGregor, and the adorable Nathan Mack who voiced talking ornaments Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Featherduster, Lumiere, and Chip, respectively. Directed by Academy-Award winning director Bill Candon, the movie has amassed around $690 million dollars since its global premiere.

A tale as old as time

The story of the Beauty and the Beast is instilled forever in the hearts of every Disney fan. Seeing it in live-action made us feel nostalgic about our childhood and made our inner child’s hearts light up knowing that the plot stayed close to what we expected.

During a ball teeming with the wealthy and the elegant, the handsome prince of the castle was faced with the dilemma of dealing with an old lady asking for help. Little did he know that his response to this seemingly trivial encounter would change his life, and those of his people, too. On the other side of the story enters Belle, a girl who, with her books and inquisitive nature, is deemed quite different from everyone else in her village. The fates of these two characters are tied as Belle comes to her father’s rescue after being caught unawares in the prince’s castle.

Unbeknownst to them both, this was the start of a romance that is deeper than skin and a love that sees with the heart, and the rest of the story unfolds in a flurry of strange encounters, musical numbers, and unexpected discoveries.

A song as old as rhyme

This movie didn’t just bring us to a trip down memory lane; it also brought an exemplary whole-package experience to its audience. All of the songs that were sung expressed genuine emotions, making its listeners feel the shift from one lyric to another. Aside from this, the cinematography of the film was beyond what we expected. The colors weren’t at all binary and each frame in the film gave us a clear depiction of what was really happening in the actual scene. We also commend how they presented this classic fairytale in a more realistic and thrilling approach.

The costume and design deserve praises, too. It made believe that what we were watching then was really happening in Paris in the 1700s.

In addition, the cast must be commended for their incredible performance. No matter how small or big their part is, they have this energy that makes the whole picture come to life. It felt as if there were no lead, supporting, and extra actors or actresses because every one of them performed their hearts out. And we believe that these are the small contributions that make a great movie.

A dream come true

We never expected to see the 1991 animation to come to life so vividly. The movie that was once a child’s storybook was turned into something big, influential, and magical. Because this movie wasn’t just made for popularity or fame, it is also a call to every girl to look up to and be like Belle. Watson perfectly portrayed her as a strong, independent woman that would never let a man stand in her way. Also, Belle showed the lengths that one would go for family, especially since her father was all she had left.

Beauty and the Beast also left us an important message in life: we should treat everyone equally, regardless of their looks. We should look deeper than what we see on the surface. Also, it gives people the idea that selfishness is not something you should keep inside heart. We must give, and give, and give as it is the key that will lead us to our happily ever after.

Batch 2021 reaches out to orphans



The UPIS Sophomores held an outreach program last February 25 at Gentle Hands Inc. in Quezon City.

Led by the Sophomore Association (SoA), the outreach, which included getting-to-know activities, games, and sharing of snacks, aimed to celebrate and spread love to the ones in need. Twenty-eight (28) orphans and 33 student volunteers participated in the outreach.

Bree Catibog, Business Manager of the SoA, shared how seeing the orphans enjoy their program was heartwarming and made all the challenges they met gratifying. “Thankful kami na despite all the problems na na-encounter namin sa planning, naging successful yung event kasi sobrang solid talaga ng araw na yun so super worth it lahat ng effort namin,” she shared.

Batch 2021 raised funds and resources through a raffle draw. Winners were drawn on February 14 and were given prizes sponsored by various individuals affiliated with the batch.

“Ano pong maitutulong ko sa inyo?”

Ito ang popular na pambungad na tanong ni Gng. Carmelita Capones, o mas kilala nating lahat bilang si Ma’am Lita sa mga estudyante at Ate Lita naman para sa faculty at staff. Nobyembre ng taong 1980 nang una siyang magtrabaho bilang isang clerk sa UP. Dahil sa kaniyang kasipagan at dedikasyon sa trabaho, unti-unti siyang na-promote hanggang naabot niya ang posisyong Senior Administrative Assistant ng UPIS na kumatawan din bilang sekretarya ng Prinsipal.

Ngunit, sa halos apat na dekadang pananatili niya sa paaralang ito, nakapagtatakang isipin kung paano nga ba siya nagtagal. Ayon sa kanya, ilan sa mga dahilan kung bakit siya umabot ng 37 taon ay: una, ang mga pribilehiyong natanggap niya mula sa prestihiyosong unibersidad; pangalawa, ang kaniyang mga nakasama; at siyempre, ang pagmamahal niya sa kaniyang trabaho.

“Si Ate Lita? Mabait ‘yun! ‘Di madamot, masipag! Isa siyang mentor na tuturuan ka kapag may gusto kang malaman,” kuwento ni Ma’am Domino na isa sa mga nakatrabaho niya.

“She may not be around all the time, but when she is, she does things efficiently,” dagdag naman ni Prop. Donkor, Assistant Principal for Administration.

“Okay na okay! Very accommodating at kapag may problema, kaya niyang i-solve!” sabi naman ni Gng. Lani Zamora, isang malapit na kaibigan at katrabaho rin ni Ma’am Lita.

Mula sa kanyang mga nakasama sa trabaho, naging napakubuti, matulungin at maaasahang empleyado si Ma’am Lita. Hindi lamang niya ibinuhos ang kaniyang sarili sa mga gawain kundi binibigyang-pansin rin niya ang pagkaroon ng magandang relasyon sa kaniyang mga katrabaho at mga pinaglilingkuran. Ipinapakita nitong hindi lamang isang empleyadong nagretiro sa UPIS, kundi isang kaibigan at miyembro ng kanilang pamilya.

Sa kaniyang pagreretiro, nais niyang higit na mapabuti at magkaroon ng mas maraming suporta mula sa Unibersidad, at magkaisa ang buong komunidad ng UPIS. Para naman sa mga susunod sa kanyang yapak ipinapayo niyang maging matiyaga, pasensyoso at maging laging handa sa trabaho. Higit sa lahat, huwag nilang makalimutang ngumiti.

Feature: UPIS Week: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the (School) Year



The atmosphere in UPIS has become more vibrant these past few weeks as 2016 ends. This could only mean one thing... UPIS Week is coming.

Everyone’s busy getting ready for the UPIS Fair, but the aura around UPIS students is beaming with excitement. Kudos to the Pamunuan ng Kamag-aral (pKA) who has been working hard since the start of the school year to organize this year’s fair in hopes of igniting the UPIS spirit once again.

Along with the pKA, the Executive Committee, Grade Level Coordinators, advisers, and Year Level Organizations also play a big role in the organization of this event.

But aside from the fun the fair brings, it also aims to strengthen the relationships among the people in the UPIS Community and to give the students a chance to showcase their skills and talents. This event has been celebrated since 1976, which is when the UPIS Elementary and High School were joined together to form what we now know and love as the UP Integrated School.

As the closing of the UPIS’ Centennial Celebration, the fair circles around the theme of pursuing the promise of a brighter future. Entitled “Idealisko: Pangarap ng Isko, Tagumpay ng Siglo,” it is to be held on December 14 – 16.

Now that the air is brimming with anticipation for the 3-day event, here’s a short list to remind you of why the UPIS Fair is the best thing that has happened to this school:


1. The Powerdance Competition and Field Demonstration

Each batch from Kindergarten to Grade 10 has been training their soldiers, assembling their formations, preparing their strategies, and finishing their routines weeks before the annual event. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 participate in the Field Demo which delights all the parents since they’ll have the chance to see and take pictures of their children in costume, grooving to the beat of the music.

But the thing that everyone’s been talking about is the much-awaited Powerdance. In this annual competition, the Grades 7-10 students compete against each other as they perform their own dance routine which was accompanied by an original mix. Simple tokens like certificates and jars of Stick-O are given to the winning batch, but the bragging rights and the batch unity it brings with it is the true prize. The themes over the years have ranged from festivals, the future, throwbacks, and dreams, but one thing remains the same: the powerdance brings batches together like no other activity can.

2. Thanksgiving Party

It’s the time when every batch or class comes together to celebrate as the first half of the year you’ve spent together comes to a close. This is the closest you can get to a Christmas celebration spent with your second family and can be one of the most memorable moments you’ll treasure in your life. It usually comes with a program prepared by the batch’s year level organization, consisting of indoor games, exchanging of gifts and eating the food everyone selflessly brought. It’s one of the best ways to end a fun-filled week of festivities and a hectic 1st semester in school.


3. Sportsfest

It’s time to show them who reigns! The Sportsfest brings the competition to a whole new level. Similar to the Powerdance, it engages each batch in a most physical and exhilarating way through group sports and games. Each batch has a chance to go against the other three grade levels in various sports with alternating schedules prepared by the pKA.

This event usually lasts up to two days, but with the adjustments that happened for the past two years it was squeezed into one. We’ll be expecting to see a lot more of action-packed sports such as Ultimate Frisbee, Relay, Dodgeball, and Filipino games like Tumbang Preso, Siato, and our very own Double Cell! We witness a lot of dramas and victories here but what always shines is the sportsmanship of UPIS students.


4. Battle of the Bands

Who doesn’t love this? You get to stay late in school with your friends while singing along to your favorite songs performed by your fellow students as they compete for the title. Fondly called by the students as BotB, the competition is open only to high school and occasionally Grade 6 students. It showcases how talented UPIS students are when it comes to singing and playing instruments. Songs from different genres are sung, and recently, a trend of playing original songs has started. But whether they perform classics or fresh tunes, what’s really special with this closing event is how it allows the UPIS community to just rock and spend a good time together regardless of their age.

5. Variety Show

This is the part of the fair where you see so much talent and passion from the people you never thought would show such potential. With audiences from all levels, the Variety Show is a contest open to all UPIS students. It serves as a stage for them to perform their techno dance moves, their lovely singing, and other astounding talents in front of the whole school.

6. Marriage Booth

For generations, this has always been everyone’s favorite. Being married to your crush, even if it’s just in front of cadets and a makeshift altar, and exchanging vows with him or her is the real deal!

The GSP organizes the marriage booth every year. From the rings and documents to the actual wedding itself, they have always succeeded in spreading the kilig across the whole campus. They have different packages, too! You can choose from wearing paired rings, signing marriage certificates, spending some private time together and parading around the school. You can even opt for the full experience which includes everything that was mentioned! Whatever you choose won’t matter because it’s the moment that you will truly remember!

7. Jail Booth

Get wet or get broke! The jail booth tests how fast you can run and proves how sly each of you can be trying to hide from the BSP to avoid getting doused! The usual flow is as follows: they’ll call out things or names which you may or may not have at the moment and if you’re spotted, they’ll catch and put you inside their circle of chairs. While in their makeshift prison, you may choose whether to bail yourself out or get drenched! They’ll either hose you from head-to-toe or soak you with a bucketful of water. This is why you should always prepare extra money and clothes in case you get unlucky on that day.


8. Foods and Goodies

Every UPIS week, different concessionaires sell a variety of food and dry-goods to the various fair-goers. Although many come-and-go, a few of them always manage to get a spot on the UPIS grounds during the fair.

Little pieces of happiness you can get for just 5 pesos! We’ve seen friendships built because of this balloon-blowing trend every time it is being sold at the fair. And we hope that this simple delight would never come to an end.

El Bonito’s Pizza, Calamares, and Blue Lemonade
The El Bonito pizza concessionaire has already left a mark in the hearts and taste buds of all UPIS students. It gives us a glimpse of what heaven tastes like with its mouth-watering pizza flavors such as hawaiian, pepperoni, vegetarian, and bacon.

Along with the calamares and blue lemonade, which is such a good combination of salty and sweet, it’s a nice break from the food you usually eat at the canteen or bring from home.

The lemonade doesn’t just make your tongue blue, but it also makes your tummy smile. The calamares alone is already satisfying, but it’s so much more than that when you add a dip of spicy vinegar to it. The joy of eating these during the fair, coupled with the memories you have with the people or person you eat it with, makes that 45-peso combo so much more “sulit”.

Feature: A Literally Legendary Day

“Aye, aye, captain!”

It’s Literally Literary Day season once again!

Also known as LLD, it is one of the most-awaited events in the school year not only by UPIS students, but by the staff and teachers as well. Although it started as an activity of just the English Club members back in 2011, Ms. Jean Katherine Sales, a former English teacher and English club adviser, thought that it had the potential to be a school event, then bam! It soon became a UPIS tradition celebrated annually during the National Book Week.

At least two weeks before the day of the celebration, each student is tasked to choose a literary personality that he or she wishes to portray and dress up as. These characters can be from a novel, manga, or a comic book.

A number of students do their best to stand out and be chosen as the representative of their class. In this way, they would have the chance to win in the grade level competition where participants are judged by their costume and the way they portray their character.

On the day of presentation, a variety of characters such as princesses, monsters, fairies, anime icons, robots and many more can be seen. So whether you just want to stand out or just go the extra mile, here are some tips to help you make LLD legen—wait for it—dary!

 1. Pick a character that isn’t much of a cliché.

Dare to be different from the others and search the four corners of the Earth for that one, distinct persona that will make you the sure winner of this year’s LLD Competition! Go far beyond the expectations of people. Just like Hannah Manalo of Batch 2018, who portrayed the Magic Mirror from Disney’s Snow White in last year’s LLD. She definitely surprised people by showing up wearing a DIY mirror costume made of cardboard, newspaper, and cloth.

 2. Don’t forget to always be in character.

LLD is a once-a-school year event that gives you the chance to be an entirely different person. Whether going to the bathroom or the canteen, be proud to wear that crown or hold that sword up high! Take advantage of the opportunity to show everyone who you can be!


3. Mind nobody but yourself.

Just do your own thing! At the end of the day, you’ll regret not making the most out of it. Remember that confidence is the best outfit anyone can wear! Set the standards. Aim to be the very best! Just look at the ever-famous Wenona Dawn Catubig of Batch 2019 who completely dominated the LLD competition for three consecutive years! She was never bothered by other people’s stares and looks because she was too busy pulling off Nell Sweetzer from The Last Exorcism on the ramp in 2014, making her one of the most memorable participants in the recent history of LLD.

Feature: What type of Poke-Student are you? (Part 2)



Last time, we shared with you 7 different Poke-Student types. If you weren't able to find your type in that list, here are 7 more:


1. Grass types are still alive but barely breathing. The lack of sleep has turned them into zombies. They want to be normal type students but they can’t. Often they are mistaken as high, but in all honesty, they just want to get high grades.

2. People’s impression of Steel types is that they are arrogant and such extreme show-offs, with their maskels in their #Gainz Instagram posts. When you meet them, they’re actually really fun to be with and maybe a liiiiittle arrogant. Beware: they will take every chance to show you their gunz.

3. Flying types are those who are ready for anything, whether it’s a class presentation, a group skit, or even an individual monologue. They’re extremely enthusiastic and optimistic about their tasks and they always execute in an extravagant way. Anticipate a perfect score in group projects with them.


4. People never seem to notice the presence of Ghost types until something hilarious happens. They are the masterminds of tricks and pranks that make the whole class crack up in laughter. Usually, they come up with all of the surprises and contribute out-of-this-world ideas for reports and projects which are never too hard for them to pull off.


5. Fairy types manage Tumblr blogs that are perfect examples of a e s t h e t i c s, with galaxy-themed notebooks and inspirational phone wallpapers to match. Their school supplies look as if they came from a National Bookstore from outer space and it’s likely they won’t tell you how much they cost. They’re the people you’d ask to do lettering for a love letter, written report, or visual aids because their penmanship is #OnPoint.


6. Bug types just can’t stop talking. They ask their fellow students questions about drama they aren’t even a part of. They love hearing and spreading tsismis even when it’s evident that you’re not interested. If you hear your group chat notifications blowing up, you know it’s them asking what the requirements for the next days are.


7. We usually look up to Fighting types for the way they pursue and work hard for the things that they either want or love doing. Academic achievers and student-athletes are perfect examples of this type. They have a great perspective on life, but it is difficult for them to balance their priorities.

Feature: What Type of Poke-Student are You?



As the popular game Pokémon Go took the world by storm, rest assured it didn’t leave UPIS untouched. Students of all ages have been hooked since its launch in the Philippines last August 6. In fact, the Grades 7-12 Building even has 2 Pokestops!

With the amount of Pokémon available in-game and everyone aiming to “Catch ‘em all,” have you ever wondered what Pokémon type you represent as a UPIS student? Don’t fret, we’ve got a list for you!


1. There’s a one in a million chance that only one of the Normal type appears in a batch. They have a proper sleep schedule, an active social life, stable grades and maybe even a significant other. No one knows how they maintain such a lifestyle because of their rarity.



2. Fire types are driven by passion. They often find themselves occupied by anything and everything. They do things with so much love and dedication that they sometimes tend to lose control over the harmony in their lives. Yet they are the truest and most caring humans you’ll ever want in your life.



3. Water types are the calmest people you’ll ever meet. They are graceful under pressure and eternally calm in any situation that life throws at them. People envy them because they’ve been blessed with versatility. You’d probably want to call them up at 3AM for those deep talks because just like the Marianas Trench, their conversations steer away from shallow ends.


4. Ground types are those who stand firm in their opinions. They are typically vocal about social issues and will have a thing or two to say about them. If they’re threatened by someone who disagrees with them, there’s no doubt that they’ll fight for what they believe in.


5. When in doubt about the recent Math lesson or you’re just down, you can always depend on Electric types. They are bubbly and amiable in nature. They have the ability to fully regenerate their energy which they freely share to those in need. Although sometimes they feel obligated to give away all of the energy they have, leaving them empty-handed.



6. When you see people of the Psychic type, you might dismiss them as slackers. It is their life principle to never study, not even for periodic exams, yet somehow, they still ace them with flying colors. When you ask them how they do it, they’ll shrug and say, “Stock knowledge lang ‘yan.”



7. Dark - Ask Dark types one question and they’ll answer with thousands of profound answers. They’re one of the most interesting people you’ll ever encounter in school, but they prefer to be alone in their own little bubble. People of this type tend to have problems when working with others which lead to negligence of their awesomeness.

Ang Pagsilang ng Isang Manunulat

Sa MCPakisabi nagsimulang makilala ang karamihan sa mga tinatangkilik na writers kagaya nina Faber Castell 0.7, Dimples, Noisetier at Saviour of the Broken! Pinasimulan ito ng MC 1 Batch 2015 noong Agosto 21, 2014 upang makapagpahayag ng damdamin ang mga mag-aaral ng UPIS.

Ang teaser na ito ay likha ni MC2 2015 Art Director Aemel De Leon
para sa ikatlong edisyon ng MCPakisabi.

Maliban dito, nagsilbi rin itong paraan upang madiskubre ng MC Staff ang mga estudyanteng may taglay na talento sa pagsusulat. Hinihikayat namin ang mga estudyante na magpasa ng kanilang mga akda na maaari naming mailathala sa Ang Aninag Online tuwing pub tradition na ito.

Itinatag noong Agosto 27, 2011 ang Ang Aninag Online kaya naman espesyal sa lahat ng naging bahagi MC ang buwan ng Agosto. Tradisyon na ang pub day na ito dahil hindi lamang ito nagpapaalala sa pagkakabuo ng online site, nagsisilbi rin itong reunion ng MC Alumni dahil naiimbitahan silang muli na magsulat ng mga artikulo na mailalathala sa gabi ng selebrasyon.

Sa MCAnniversary nila masayang binabalik-balikan ang mga hindi nila mallilimutang karanasan sa work program na ito. Madarama mo rin ang patuloy na suporta ng alumni sa pub tradition na ito dahil sabi nga nila,
"Ang MC ay forever."

Inaasahang Kasagutan mula sa ‘di Inaasahang Tao

Kailangan mo ba ng sasagot sa mga tanong mo sa buhay? Aba’y itigil na ang paghahanap dahil maaari mo na ngayong idaan ‘yan sa MC Sagutan!

Ang MC Sagutan ay isang tradisyong nagsimula noong Marso 7, 2015 sa ilalim ng MC2 2015. Sa tradisyong ito, nagpapasa ang MC staff (at ilang non-staff) ng mga kathang sasagutin ng ibang manunulat. Ang MC Learning Coordinators naman ang nagsasabi kung kaninong akda ang sasagutin ng kung sino.

Siyempre, espesyal dito ang palitan ng mga saloobin at damdamin, lalo pa’t hindi mo kilala ang taong sasagot! Kapana-panabik din ito para sa manunulat dahil hindi niya alam kung kaninong gawa ang kaniyang sinasagot. (Uy, malay mo si crush pala! Sulat na ‘yan!) Halo halo. Gulo gulo. Labo labo.

Malungkot ka ba? Gusto mo bang malimutan ang iyong mga problema? Idaan mo na lang iyan sa kasiyahan na dala ng aming DiMaAninag! Kung hindi pa ninyo narinig, ang Di MaAninag ay isang kakatuwang pub tradition ng MC dahil ito ay ang spoof edition ng Ang Aninag Online.

Isa ito sa pinaka-inaabangang pub dahil sa mga nakakatuwang artikulo na nagbibigay kasiyahan sa mga tagasubaybay ng MC. Binubuo ito ng spoof news, spoof feature articles, at spoof literary works. Spoof lahat at bawal ang sawi! Isang beses kada semestre ginaganap ang pub, madalas tuwing Oktubre at Marso, at ito ang nagiging pangalawa sa huling pub ng MC.

Ito ang pub para sa lahat ng umiibig, iniibig, at di na muli pang iibig!

Sinimulan ito ng MC2 2014 dahil gusto nila ng isang pub na may masasayang akda at nakapokus sa tema ng pag-ibig. Ang kanilang pub ay pinamagatang Tatlong Araw ng mga Puso at inilathala mula Pebrero 12 hanggang 14, 2014.

Dahil sa mga hugot article ng mga manunulat, marami ang nakaka-relate sa mga artikulong nalathala sa pub day na ito kaya naman isa ito sa mga sikat at inaabangang pub tradition ng MC tuwing buwan ng Pebrero.
