Literary: A Step Forward

With each step forward, I start anew
Each day passing by
Every week moving onward
And every year stepping forward

This year, however, is unlike the others
This year marks the start of everything I’ve lived so far for
I start anew
A fresh start that marks the next chapter of my life

New faces, far from the ones I'm used to
With new sights to see
Dreams to achieve
And most importantly, come new goals to set

Armed with the dream of pursuing my interests
I take a step forward, to places unknown
To start again

Literary: Pagtatapos

“UP naming mahal, pamantasang hirang...”

Literary: Polaris

Whenever I see you, you’re there like a star
Far away across galaxies, yet never out of sight
There you are, a star, and always shining bright
Out in outer space, and always very far

It can be the darkest night, and you’re there alight
In a place far away, where my light can’t reach
And shout as I try, there’s no sense for speech
You’re out there beyond me, and always just a sight

You are the Polaris, the north to my sky
The light that I see who’s always out to guide me
And the reason it’s you, is way beyond me
With our space I can’t reach you, however hard I try

Still you are the Polaris, the north to my sky
Tonight, here to stay, come tomorrow, says goodbye

Literary: Departure

When the stars align or fade from sight
I’ll be the day, you’ll be the night
These texts at night, you’ll get during the day
A thousand miles, in a faraway place

In this place, I’ll not be beside you,
When I am asleep, you’ll be up and about
While I stand here awake, you lay there asleep
As I wait for your texts and reply to missed calls

With a flight an hour away
I wish I could bring you, or maybe just stay
Not the place of my future, but the place I call home
When we’re pushed far by distance, I’m just a phone away

But maybe one day, I’ll come home and see the light
Where your days are my days, and your nights are my nights
A meeting in person, we’ll eventually find
Just not today or tomorrow or the week after that

With my time in the future and yours in the past
Just never forget I’m with you, and that’s that
And the time will come, it’s just mine’s running out
When I have to leave, as it’s time for my flight

LIterary: Unspoken

Why do I say what I say?
Strings of words to form a meaning
With a meaning through emotion
And emotion through speech
Why can’t we say, what we really want to say

Some things are meant to be dealt with through speech
But why can’t we talk?
Why talk through screens, not speech?
The words that I say could never reach you
Have my words lost their meaning? Or have I lost my feelings?

Was it something I said?
I say through my mind with feeling and thought
With the thought to confront you
When the words could come out
But my voice wouldn’t let me

Unspoken are the words that need to be said
With my heart on the line, with thought in my words
I’ll say to you what I should’ve said before
Can we talk?
Can we finally speak without screens to look down on?

Will I finally say what I wanted to say?
Will my strings of words ever form a meaning?
With a meaning through emotion
That emotion, I’ll keep
When I see myself as ready

“Unspoken,” we’ll no longer be.

Literary (Submission): Compositions

The sound of the song that you play
The song of your voice, the sound that I hear
where I’m the composer arranging a piece
And you are the song I’m wanting to hear

When I first played your tune
I heard your notes, and you were mine
Where I felt like Debussy
composing my Claire de lune

Trying to hear the progress I gave you, a listen
Where you play a sharp, but I needed a minor
These notes that I write, the song that you want to be
I think to myself, looking at a mirror

Next to the piano, I continue to write
I try to match chords, fifths, ninths, and sevenths
but to no avail when you kept being out of tune
I see that music is a pain and an art with patience

And you’re the art this composer is struggling to grasp
not every day comes a piece you think is the one
the piece you really wanted to make
the piece that comes out to be the best you could’ve done

But in your song I couldn’t follow
the notes I arranged weren’t the ones you wanted to hear
I try to understand music’s complexity, your beauty
and here I am waging war with a piece I’m breaking

I’m composing, thinking that I’m the composer
when it was the other way around
The piece I’m arranging and trying to understand was never you
but my feelings and yours unbound

You’re the composer
The composer I can’t keep up with
Your complex tunes and chords, I can’t comprehend
Even I myself can’t understand

The notes you play you hear to be right
The notes I play that you see wrong
The composer who’s getting composed by the piece he’s trying to make
Who am I? Not a composer, but a chord in your song
