13est defends Power Dance title

Bow down to the 13EST. Batch 2013 breezed through an exciting routine
during the annual Power Dance competition to get first place.
UPIS Batch 2013, popularly known as 13est, showcased a cool, colorful, and creative interpretation of Bacolod’s Masskara Festival to win their second straight title in the annual Power Dance competition last December 2012.

Drawing on the ISKULtura theme for UPIS Week 2012, the batch field demo competition, dubbed UPISAYAJUAN, was inspired by Philippines festivals.

Each batch rigorously prepared and rehearsed an 8-minute routine in 2-3 weeks. Driven by batch spirit and healthy competition, everyone worked their hardest in practices after classes and weekends.

Batch 2013 admitted to having trouble in getting the routine done properly and making it all go together. There were a lot of incidents of clashing ideas but despite these, the batch pulled it off during performance day where the strength of their camaraderie and unity set aside all their differences turning it into their most successful and fulfilling performance yet.

Batch 2015 also wowed the crowd with their Ati-atihan-inspired routine, coming in second, while Batch 2014 showed off their dancing skills for third.

Batch 2013 also won Best in Costume for their fiery garments and masks while Batch 2014 won Best Cheer for their catchy tune. ● Rya Ducusin, Bianca Pio

UPIS 3-6 places second in PSO Finals

The UPIS 3-6 team of Jarod de Luna, Henry Marquez, and Bertrand Diola won 2nd place in the Philippine Science Olympiad finals last September 30 held at the Ateneo de Manila University.

On the other hand, Mariel de Luna, Zena del Mundo, and Christine Prieto placed 9th in the high school division.

The competition was a quiz bee composed of questions regarding Information Technology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Science.

From 300 competing schools in the elimination round, the pool was narrowed down to 20 schools in the semi-finals. From the 20 schools chosen, 10 qualified for the finals. ● by Sandy De La Paz, Rya Ducusin, Miguel Flores, and Hannah Garay

Stars and Juniors hold annual investiture

The UPIS Star Scouts and Junior Girl Scouts held their annual investiture ceremonies last Sept. 24 at the Multi-Purpose Hall.

The Stars from Grades 1-3 had a joint investiture led by troop leaders Ms. Angela Macaraeg and Ms. Sharon Aguila. Later in the afternoon, the Juniors led by Ms. Glaiza Cruz invested 11 new scouts and rededicated more than 50 former junior girl scouts.


Both programs were opened by Dr. Ronaldo San Jose, UPIS principal. In her message, the guest speaker, Mrs. Estela Gonzales from the GSP Council, commended the UPIS scouts for their dedication and encouraged them to be continue being active in scouting activities.


All in all, six new parent and troop leaders were invested in both Star and Junior Scouts namely Bernadette Angeles, Christie Manantab, Suzanne Licuanan, Mary Justine Amonoy, Helanay Ariola and Patricia Santos. ● by Rya Ducusin and Joanna Pagulayan

This is a familiar expression for anime geeks or otakus. It can be heard and read in animes and mangas, particularly in maid cafes.

Maid cafes, which originated in Japan, have been a popular event for many anime fanatics. From the word itself, maid cafes are places where people could eat and hang out with maids and butlers as their waiter.

Last September 13, the UP Anime and Manga Enthusiasts (UP AME) held their yearly AME week which included their very own Maid and Butler Cafe at the Vargas Hall.

The Amadare Cafe offers a variety of maids and butlers that will serve and entertain you. At each table, one butler or maid is assigned to wait on customers for 20 minutes.

There are different types of maids and butlers: the refined, the tsundere, and the imouto or otouto. The customers will choose one type and that maid or butler will serve them according to the personality that the customers request.

The first, which is the refined maid or butler, is a calm, smart and professional-looking type. The second, which is the tsundere maid or butler, is a snobbish hard-to-get type. The last, which is the imouto or otouto maid or butler, is a little sister or little brother type. Some examples of the butlers you can choose from are 4chan, Sean, Larc, Nigel and Gina, who is a crossdresser.

The Amadare Cafe also has sets of meals to choose from - some of which are full course while some are snacks. One of the meals they have is the "Signal No. 4" which consists of nachos as appetizer, two onigiris or rice balls as main course, a choice of smores or candied orange with cake as dessert and orange juice for drinks. They also have the "Rainbow Set" which is a "merienda" set that offers smores or candied orange with cake and a cold drink.

We commend the Amadare Cafe for the food and service that are closely similar to the ones in Japan.

In the previous years, the UP AME held their AME week during the second semester but they moved it to the first semester to give way to their annual grand event to be held in February 2013.

Ginanap noong Setyembre 7 sa Multi-purpose Hall ang taunang Investiture ng UPIS Girl Scouts of the Philippines.

Nagsimula ang programa sa pagpasok ng GSP sa Hall kasabay ng pag-awit ng GSP hymn.

Nagbigay ng paunang salita ang prinsipal na si Prop. Ronaldo M. San Jose.

“Ang scouting ang isa sa pinakamatagumpay na organisasyon hindi lang sa UPIS, kung hindi pati sa buong bansa,” aniya.

Isa-isang sinindihan ng mga troop at patrol leaders ang mga kandila na sumisimbolo sa mga pangako at batas ng Girl Scouts.

Matapos sindihan ang mga kandila, itinalaga ang mga bagong kasapi ng Senior Scouts mula sa Grado 7 at Cadets – 6 mula sa Molave, 5 sa Kamagong at 4 sa Dao.

Sumailalim naman sa muling pagtatalaga ang mga miyembro ng GSP mula sa Grado 8 at 9.

Buwan ng Wika at Kasaysayan, muling binuksan

Noong Agosto 22, 2012, opisyal na binuksan ang Buwan ng Wika sa UPIS sa pangunguna ng Kilusang Araling Panlipunan, Sangguniang Pangwika at Future Homemakers Club.

Nagsimula ang programa sa bating panimula galing sa prinsipal na si Dr. Ronaldo San Jose. Nagkaroon din ng isang AV presentation at pagtatanghal mula sa ilang piling mag-aaral mula sa grado 3-6 bilang pagpaparangal sa ating mga bayani.

Magkakaroon ng iba’t ibang paligsahan ang UPIS gaya ng UPIS Master Chef, Rampang Pinoy at paligsahan sa pagitan ng mga seksyon. ● nina Camille Babaran, Trizia Badong, at Rya Ducusin

SciSoc joins environmental awareness workshop

The members of the UPIS Science Society (SciSoc) attended a workshop which aims to promote environmental awareness and teach citizens the importance of water to the community.

The Lakbayan tour conducted by Manila Water and headed by Ms. Heidi de Maisip included an on-site visit to the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Compound, La Mesa Dam, and UP Sewage Treatment Plant.

They also attended a climate change seminar sponsored by the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines at the UPIS 7-10 AVR. Activities, lectures and discussions were also given to help the students be more aware of global warming. ● by Rya Ducusin, Camille Babaran, and Trizia Badong

UPIS K-2 building undergoes renovation


The K-2 playground is currently inaccessible to students
due to ongoing repairs.
The UPIS K-2 building is currently undergoing  renovations for the safety and comfort of the students.

The renovation sponsored by Ayala Land Corporation as part of the UPIS-UP Town Center contract includes construction of two additional comfort rooms at the 2nd floor of the building, insulation of the top floor, sunscreen around the building, and repairs to the old broken ceilings. Exhaust fans will also be installed.

 As of this writing, the side of the K-2 building, facing the UP College of Home Economics, has already been finished.  The K-2 playground is currently closed while construction is being finished.

 This 5 million peso-project is expected to be finished by August 2012. ● Rya Ducusin, Arielle Gabriel
