As I lay down my tired and forgotten soul
I felt temporary serenity on the damp sand
Underneath my heart

I just laid there with my eyes tightly shut
Hearing the waves repeatedly crash to the shore
Remembering how someone repeatedly broke my heart

Right then and there I vowed
Never to love again
For with unrequited love, the heart just gets broken

On a rainy day you came along
And without a word you picked up the pieces
Like fragments of stranded seashells

You’d often send messages in bottles
Making me feel all the beautiful things
I never knew existed

I felt that I’d never get tired
Of writing your name
On every island I get my feet on

With you I learned to wander across the ocean again
And that sometimes it’s okay
To just sink deep into the water

And with your never ending love
I kept on resurfacing
Almost always floating

But darling, you are the sea
And I am just somebody
Pretending to breathe underwater

Mahirap maunawaan
Pabago-bago ugali't damdamin
Minsang raragasa, minsang kalmadong alon

Para kang dagat
Dulot sa akin ay takot
Puno ng misteryo't sikreto
Dahil dito, ako'y napapasaya't napapaiyak mo

'Sing lalim na ng dagat ang ating pinagsamahan

Rowing through the river ‘Dee’
I found myself in open sea
And no matter how much I row
I sadly watched the mainland go
Through my journey back to land
To leafy trees and yellow sand
I chanced upon a pod of whales--
Their majestic songs and slapping tails

They overturned my tiny boat
In which I could barely even float
I saw there underneath the waves
Enormous underwater caves
And from inside the caves themselves
Immortal gold that filled their shelves

Enchanted by the golden light
Staring at the magical sight
I realized I was out of air
Went up without a thought to spare
But when I went to look again
I couldn’t see the golden den
I have been looking for it until this day
And more than that I cannot say

As a child, I used to have a lot of fun playing in the sand. On the beach, on the playground or even a sandbox. Of course every now and then, the sun would get in my eyes and turn me into crying wreck, for a while anyway. In a few minutes, I would be back to playing and laughing once again.

Through the years, sand gradually turned from a source of enjoyment into a minor annoyance, it’s dirty, it’s messy and it gets everywhere. However much you look at it, though, sand is still sand, it is permanent, like the presence of cranky teachers in schools or the one problem in a building that no one fixes – no matter how much everybody complains.

However, the sky is a different story, it is always changing and I am just beginning to appreciate how beautiful it is, be it a blanket of starlight or a glorious sunset.

I have come to see the sky as a symbol of beauty, freedom and hope for a better future. It is the reassurance I need when I am feeling down. Unfortunately, here in the city, the sky cannot be seen with its true beauty, like a veil on the Mona Lisa.

The morning sky is obscured by a thick wall of smoke and the night sky is dimmed. A billion shimmering lights in the sky is dimmed by a billion shimmering inferior lights on the ground, a pity, it seems that the sky, for all its greatness and beauty, cannot be constant in the manner that sand is.

For all the virtues that the sky has, it seems that every once in a while, I am to be reduced to a melancholic child with sand in his eyes.
