Filipino Drama, nagbalik sa entablado


Makalipas ang dalawang taon, muling nagtanghal ang klase ng Filipino Drama (FD) noong Huwebes, Disyembre 7 sa Room 121 ng UPIS 7-12 Building.

Itinanghal ng unang klase ang produksyong “Ang Goldfish ni Prof. Dimaandal” ni Eljay Deldoc sa direksyon nina Aldous dela Peña at Danna Sumalabe. Una itong ipinalabas sa Virgin Labfest noong 2014 at nagkaroon ng re-run noong 2015.

Itinanghal naman ng ikalawang klase ang “Teroristang Labandera” ni Debbie Ann L. Tan sa direksyon nina Adrian Bornilla at Hannah Manalo. Ipinalabas ito sa Virgin Labfest noong 2007 at muli noong 2016.

Matapos ang pagpapatupad ng K-12 curriculum, ang Filipino Drama na noo’y elektib para sa Grado 10 ay binuksang muli para sa mga mag-aaral ng Grado 12. Ang huling batch na nagtanghal ng produksyon sa ilalim ng K-10 curriculum ay ang Batch 2015.

Magkakaroon ng pangalawang pagtatanghal ang klase sa darating na Huwebes, Disyembre 14, sa ganap na ika-2 n.h. Ang huling show ay bubuksan sa mga mag-aaral ng UPIS at sa mga non-UPIS.

Ang FD 2018 ang kauna-unahang klase ng Filipino Drama na hinati sa dalawang grupo bunsod ng dami ng mga mag-aaral nito. //ni Trisa de Ocampo

K-2 Board Games Center launched



All a-board!

UPIS K-2 students now get to enjoy another form of play at the new Board Games Center at the K-2 Guidance Office.

The center, introduced as part of the K-2 Guidance Program this school year, was conceptualized due to the students’ interest in and positive response to the Board Games Club. Teacher Grace Espinosa, along with five other student teachers, manages the facility.

There are several kinds of board games available, some of which were bought with the funds of the Board Games Club. Fifteen students from the morning classes and another fifteen from the afternoon can borrow a board game to use within the center’s premises each day. Students must first present their slot card, similar to a library card, before borrowing play materials.

Pangasinan librarians visit UPIS Library



Two hundred thirty (230) teacher-librarians from the Pangasinan Division II Learning Resources Management Development System (LRMDS) toured the different UPIS Libraries last September 8.

This was their first stop in their benchmarking of school libraries in the National Capital Region.

The visitors were elementary and secondary school librarians, LRMDS District Coordinators, and a Project Development Officer.

The library staff of UPIS gave them a tour of the libraries in the K-2, 3-6, and 7-12 Buildings. The staff informed them of the history and objectives of the library, the facilities found here, and those who make use of said facilities.

The visitors had many positive comments on the libraries’ facilities and users such as the availability of Mac computers, the number of students who go to the library, and the conduct of students.

“Ang pagpunta nila rito ay pagpapaalala na dapat lagi tayong handa, may bisita man o wala,” shared Head Librarian Wilma Azarcon. “Naka-schedule man sila o on the spot and pagpunta nila, you should always be ready,” she added.

Sports: Junior Maroons drop first 4 assignments in PCABL



The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Junior Maroons struggled to find their game and fell to a four-game losing streak in the Pilipinas Chinese Amateur Basketball League (PCABL).

Veteran guard Bryan Lina top-scored in their first game with 17 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds against Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) last August 18, 2017. In the end, it was the height advantage that gave the Ateneo an 11-point lead to win the game in 78-67.

Forward Matt Santiago chipped in 20 points in a hard-fought second game versus Adamson last August 21, 2017. The Fighting Maroons came back from a 25-point deficit yet missed the last shot in overtime to give Adamson an 80-78 win.

With 17 points and 10 rebounds, Santiago also led the team during their third game last August 27 when they battled against Chang Kai Shek College (CKSC). It was a close game in the first three quarters but CKSC gathered enough steam and dealt UPIS its third loss, 95-71.

The Maroons engaged in a heated game against UAAP rivals University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tiger Cubs last September 2 but failed to recover after a bad start to lose their fourth consecutive game, 88-75.

“Siguro yung consistency. Kasi ang basketball is a 40-minute game. Hindi pwedeng 30 minutes maganda laro tapos last 10 minutes wala na,” Lina expressed his thoughts on their points for improvement.

Dr. Calingasan named new UPIS principal



The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) officially welcomed Dr. Lorina Y. Calingasan as the school's new principal last September 5.

Dr. Calingasan also introduced the members of her administration team namely Prof. Rachel B. Ramirez as Assistant Principal for Academic Programs (APAP); Prof. Portia Y. Dimabuyu, Assistant Principal for Administration (APA); and Prof. Czarina B. Agcaoili, head of the Office of Research, Development, and Publication (ORDP).

Dr. Calingasan succeeds Dr. Ronaldo M. San Jose who was UPIS principal from June 2011 to August 2017. She was the sole nominee for the UPIS principalship this school year and is the first principal from the Social Sciences cluster in 11 years.

In a public forum at the UP College of Education (UP Educ) last August 4, she presented her plans to the UPIS students, faculty, and staff.

One of the main points of her agenda was the strengthening of the K-12 Curriculum. This included the monitoring and reviewing of its current implementation, particularly in Grades 11 and 12.

She also said that she aims to strengthen the school’s link with UP Educ and the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (NISMED) by conducting more faculty exchange, research collaborations, and training program partnerships.

Furthermore, she will continue the school’s various student exchange programs and linkages with other institutions and companies, and in a way, respond to the demand for internationalization. She also plans to continue joint publications and research projects for basic education and laboratory schools, in order to facilitate the school’s research and extension program.

She also cited her plans on faculty development, intensifying staff development training and ensuring continuous support from parents and alumni through various activities.

Dr. Calingasan has been a Social Studies teacher in UPIS for 20 years starting 1989, until she transferred as Assistant Professor to the College of Education in 2009. She graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences in UP Manila, took her Master’s Degree in Education, and got her Doctoral Degree in Curriculum Studies in 2016. She served as UP Educ’s coordinator in Student Teaching prior to her nomination as UPIS principal.

The public forum was hosted by Dr. Rosanelia Yangco, who is also chair of the nomination committee for the UPIS principalship. Feature: A Night of Beauty and Light



The Dawani Women’s Choir and the UP Cherubim and Seraphim (UPCS) held a concert entitled “Beauty and Light” last March 31 at the Church of the Risen Lord in UP Diliman.
The concert raised funds for the benefit of the Purple Center Foundation (PCF), an education-centered organization previously known as the Philippine Christian Foundation.

 Behind the Scenes

UPCS, or more commonly known as Cherubim, is the official children’s choir of UP. It was founded and first directed by the late Flora Zarco-Rivera. She was succeeded by her daughter Elena Rivera-Mirano who we call Tita Lennette.

In the last five or so years, I’ve performed with Cherubim in at least five major concerts among many gigs and productions. Though much of the feelings and emotions haven’t changed, there were several new experiences that came our way this school year.

This year, we started recruiting a batch of potential new members, who are called apprentices, as we’ve lost several regular members after our production of Awit ni Pulau last July 2016. A selected few will be joining the regulars starting this summer. Other than that, we also have a new assistant conductor, Alyssa Liyana Dioquino or Ate Liya as we call her, who might assume Tita Lennette’s position once she fully retires. Our usual rehearsal agenda adjusted to accommodate Ate Liya and the apprentices.

The concert was our first time to meet Dawani and the PCF. In my book, it was also our first collaboration with other performers in an official major concert. We got to meet Dawani in our last rehearsal before the day of the concert and we only rehearsed our two songs together once. It was a blissful feeling to perform with new voices and to share our talents with one another. We only met PCF on the day of the concert itself and we got to chat with them over our afternoon snack before the concert proper.

The experience was nonetheless the same as usual – last minute rehearsals, making ourselves up, eating, reading through pieces, running around looking for other members, and fixing formations. I personally had to look after the younger members as part of the junior staff or senior members of our group. It was harder than usual as we weren’t used to the apprentices and their behavior in a concert.
The usual feelings of nervousness, excitement and thrill rushed over every single one of us performing that night. It had to be a night to remember as that was the moment our Cherubim batch was going to say goodbye and the moment the group will transition into another batch with a new roster of children.

Life as a performer is a never-ending tiring but fun experience. Even if this might be my last concert as an official member of the choir, I’ll always come back to where I found my voice. Besides, we always have reunion concerts with alumni and there’ll be one coming up sooner than expected.

From the Front Row

Another round of applause for the Cherubim! This is not the first time that I’ve seen one of their concerts, and I can tell you that this surely won’t be my last. There’s something indescribable about their performances, something that always leaves you wanting more. This time was no different, they came up on stage dressed in blue, then delivered a performance that was simple, yet amazing. It is also worth noting that the Cherubim Apprentices performed for the first time, and from what I saw, it bides good for the future of Cherubim.
Benefactors of PCF programs for child welfare, the Purple Choir, sang two numbers for us. Honestly, they seemed a bit uneasy at first, being faced with an unfamiliar crowd in addition to being long ways from home, however that didn’t stop them from giving a lively number that truly raised our spirits.

A little while later, a close friend of mine, Caitlin Noroña, performed a soprano solo with Dawani. While it was a bit of a challenge for my untrained ears to catch the lyrics, the way that their voices blended was enough for anyone to be captured in the emotions of the song.

The finale, which was dubbed Tutti, a joint performance of Cherubim and Dawani, was simply spectacular. This ultimately brought the concert to an end, leaving the audience enthralled. “More! More!” the crowd cheered. Unfortunately, there was no encore. “If you want more, you’ll have to catch our next concert,” Tita Lennette said at the end.
Wrapping things up, I was more than satisfied with the set of performances. Not only was I able to enjoy the night by watching my friends, but I also ended the day with a good conscience, knowing that the funds raised by the event were going to help a lot of children sheltered by the PCF. Between being swayed by the performer’s voices and taking pictures for this article, I had a really great time, especially since I kind of had front row seats to get better camera angles. I may have seen Cherubim several times in the past, but they never fail to surprise me; together with Dawani and the Purple Choir, they brought into reality a night of beauty and light.// By

Inanunsyo ang resulta ng Halalan 2017 para sa Pamunuan ng Kamag-Aral (pKA) 3-6 at 7-10, at Year-Level Organizations (YLO) noong Mayo 16.

Nanalo ang lahat ng miyembro ng partidong KAmpilan para sa pKA 7-10, sa pamumuno ni Erika Sasazawa (Pangulo) at Magan Basilio (Pangalawang Pangulo), maliban sa posisyon ng tagapamahayag na walang kandidatong tumakbo.

Nanalo rin ang buong KApit-bisig para sa pKA 3-6 sa pangunguna ni Erwyn Aenas Vibal (Pangulo) at Patricia Niña Chua (Pangalawang Pangulo). Nanalo rin ang independent candidate na si Patricia Leguiab bilang kinatawan ng Grado 5.

Ang Senior Council (SC) sa susunod na taon ay pamumunuan ni Jana Neri (Pangulo) samantalang abstain naman ang naging resulta para sa mga posisyong ingat-yaman at tagapamayapa.

Lahat ng organisasyon ay may mga posisyong nanatiling bakante na siyang pupunuan sa susunod na akademikong taon na pangungunahan SC at Executive Committee ng UPIS.

Dalawang beses iniurong ang mga deadline ng pagpasa ng mga Certificate of Candidacy at mga interview dahil sa kakulangan ng mga kumakandidato. Nagkaroon din ng recount ng mga boto sa Grado 9 dahil sa void ballots ngunit hindi nito naapektuhan ang resulta.

Cathay Pacific orients Batch 2020 on I Can Fly PH


Cathay Pacific (CX) encouraged students of UPIS Batch 2020 to join the I Can Fly program through an orientation held at the AV Room last May 11.

Now on its third year, the program introduces high school students to the airline industry to encourage their interests in aviation and social service. The program continues to grow as the company sees the success of previous installments and the positive effects the program has on participants.

CX Marketing Communications Executive Maiel Perez presented a background of the airline company and the program. Three graduates from the pioneer batch, Fiel Delos Reyes, Caitlin Norona, and Marianne Sasing of UPIS Batch 2018, shared their experiences in the program, including the Life Well Travelled campaign and their trip to Hong Kong.

“Masaya siya pero ang pinaka na-treasure ko talaga dun ay yung experience kasi nakaka-boost siya ng self-esteem,” Sasing shared about how the program moved her.

Tinig Bulilit, Higanteng Panaginip, itinanghal ng Teatro Munti


Isinagawa ng organisasyong Teatro Munti ng Departemento ng K-2 ang programang “Tinig Bulilit, Higanteng Panaginip” noong Mayo 12 sa UP School of Economics Auditorium.

Ang programang ito ang nagsilbing culminating activity ng kanilang organisasyon. Nagpakita ang mga miyembrong mag-aaral ng kanilang talento sa pag-arte, pag-awit at pagsayaw. Itinampok ng mga nila ang kanilang mga inihandang sayaw, at awit. Kabilang din sa kanilang mga naging presentasyon ang sabayang pagbigkas, at pagtula.

Balitang K-2 kicks off culminating activity



Balitang K-2 launched their two-week culminating activity last April 24.

Balitang K-2 is a club that teaches campus journalism to K-2 students. Led by their advisers Ms. Tin Vinluan and Prof. Rica Ibarra, members of the club participated in workshops on news reporting, photojournalism, and feature and literary writing, among others.

The club hosted a gallery walk showcasing features, stories, poems, and illustrations they have written and drawn throughout the semester.

They also celebrated Author and Illustrator Day, wherein illustrator Fran Alvarez (Hating Kapatid) and author Maita Salvador (When Zero Left Numberland) delivered talks to the students. Batang Adarna Book Fair, in cooperation with Adarna Books, was held as well.

Iprinesenta ng mga kandidato’t partido ang kanilang mga plataporma sa mga estudyante at guro na dumalo. Pinagtuunan ng mga partido sa kanilang mga plataporma ang kahalagahan at pagsusulong ng pagkakaisa at pagkakapantay-pantay sa paaralan.

PAKIKIBAHAGI. Nagbigay ng ilang katanungan si Fred Samonte, kasalukuyang Presidente ng Student Council, para sa mga kandidato ng partidong KAmpilan. 


Isang partido lamang ang tumatakbo para sa Pamunuan ng Kamag-aral (pKA) 7-10. Gayundin, may tig-isang partido rin para sa Freshman Association, Sophomore Association, Juniors Association at Senior Council.

Batch 2018 holds e-waste campaigns and collection



Grade 11 students from the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) recently launched school-wide electronic waste campaigns.

Aside from spreading awareness among students, faculty, and staff on the dangers and proper handling of e-waste, the campaigns also aim to collect e-waste that will then be sent to a licensed e-waste recycling facility. The project was launched in cooperation with UP Circuit as a major requirement in Science 11.

11-GL Jaena’s E-Ways over E-Waste involved room-to-room campaigns at the Grades 7-12 building to inform students about e-waste and to introduce their Beemo-inspired deposit boxes where students can deposit their own e-waste.

Meanwhile, Grades 3-6 welcomed 11 – F Del Mundo’s Save the Motherboard which involves superheroes Rihanna Reuse, Richard Reduce, and Rachel Recycle. The campaign has two main activities, the Cleanest Homeroom Challenge: E-waste Edition and the Launchpad, an exhibit that aims to give basic information on e-waste.

11 – CF Calderon’s campaign at K-2 dubbed Super E-roes also included room-to-room activities where they taught a song-and-dance number. Aside from this, they also facilitated an educational game on proper e-waste disposal.

UPIS Math wizards win at MMC 2017



UPIS representatives brought home awards from the Metrobank – Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) – Department of Education (DepEd) Math Challenge (MMC) 2017.

Sophomore Marius Barcenas placed third in the Regional Finals while Grade 1 student Andrei Vibal placed fifth. The Grades 2 and 6 teams qualified for the Regional Finals of the team competition.

MMC is an annual math contest for elementary and high school students in both public and private schools nationwide. The contest consists of the Elimination Round, Individual Finals, Division/Area Finals, Sectoral Finals, Regional Finals, and National Finals for both the individual and team competitions. This year’s competition was held from February to March, while the Nationals will be held on April 21 and 22.

Sean Caleb Sanguyu from Grade 1 placed tenth at the sectoral finals of the individual competition while other participants for the individual competition received honors in the elimination round. Spoof News: Audi at court, sa susunod na 100 taon pa matatapos



Inaasahang matatapos ang Auditorium at Gymnasium ng University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) sa ikalawang centennial celebration ng paaralan.

Nagsimula ang renobasyon ng mga nasabing pasilidad noong 2016, ang ika-100 taon ng paaralan.

Ayon sa isa sa mga nag-aayos ng auditorium, marami pa ang kailangan gawin bago ito matapos. “Aayusin at lilinisin pa namin ang bawat upuan bago ibalik. Narinig din namin sa mga estudyante na gusto nilang magkakasunod ang mga numero ng mga upuan. Pinapa-arrange din ito sa amin,” dagdag niya.

Binago rin ang orihinal na plano ng auditorium. Dinagdagan ito ng rotating at floating stage upang makita na nang maayos ang stage maging sa rooftop ng building. Tinatahi pa ng mga estudyante sa grado 8 ang carpet na ilalatag sa buong sahig na ilalagaya sa ikatlong palapag upang magkaroon ng grand entrance ang sinumang papasok sa auditorium. Magkakaroon din ng 150” na LED Smart TV na ikakabit sa may kinalalagyan ng pamosong Brailles para masilayan ng mga taga-labas ang nagaganap sa loob ng auditorium.

UPIS uses new official logo



SCHOOL SEAL. Each design element of the new logo is an embodiment of what it means to be the UP Integrated School: dedicated, free, courageous, strong, a school that knows to go back to its roots.  
The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) is set to use its new official logo starting AY 2017-2018.

The new seal, designed by Ms. Ma. Teresa M. Falcon of UPIS Batch 1984, is derived from the centennial logo of UPIS which she designed as well. The logo is unique from that of the university and will show the spirit and ideals of UPIS. Its design was approved last January 23, 2017 in a meeting where UPIS faculty and REPS also provided comments and suggestions.

Through a letter distributed to students on March 14, UPIS Principal Dr. Ronaldo San Jose informed the parents that the new seal shall be utilized in the school’s summer uniform beginning March 21 and that all UPIS students will be required to use patches bearing the new seal starting AY 2017-2018.

Dr. San Jose also emphasized that the use of the official seal shall be subject to the provisions of the UP Intellectual Property Rights Policy of 2011 and other related laws, rules, and regulations.

Expiration of the permission to use the school’s old logo as approved by the UP Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (UP TTBDO) prompted the redesigning of the official logo of UPIS. The permission was effective only until April 1, 2016 but was extended until the latter part of 2016 to give way for its use during the UPIS Centennial Celebration.

UPIS participates in PhilosoBee for the first time



Nine UPIS Grade 11 students participated in PhilosoBee, a quiz bee organized by Kabataang Pilosopo Tasyo (KaPiTas), for the first time last February 23 at Palma Hall, UP Diliman.

PhilosoBee is open to all UP Diliman undergraduate students and the UPIS representatives were the only senior high school students.

Adrian Bornilla, Dani De Leon and Caitlin Noroña were sent as Team Del Mundo while Fiel delos Reyes, Marianne Sasing and Jem Torrecampo were sent as Team GL Jaena. Another team called Team AppSci comprised of three other students from 11-F Del Mundo, namely Franz Candido, RD Novilla, and Denice Palicte, joined as a walk-in team. The UPIS representatives competed against 11 college teams.

Three rounds of increasing difficulty covered questions on the History of Philosophy, Branches of Philosophy, Famous Philosophers, Philosophical Concepts, and Logic. Team Del Mundo made it to the difficult round where only the top 6 teams played. Pata Team, Powerpuff Girls and Kahit Ano won first, second, and third place respectively. //by Trisa de Ocampo

Naging kinatawan ng UPIS ang mga miyembro ng Economics Varsity na sina Jarod de Luna at Bryant Galicia para sa Extemporaneous Speech category, Marlon Nahial II at Fred Samonte sa Essay Writing, at Wenona Catubig at Lander Suguitan para sa Poster Making contest. Kasama rin sa Forum sina Alexandra Arugay at Aldric de Ocampo.

Sumentro ang serye ng diskusyon at kompetisyon sa pagtataguyod at pagtatanggol ng karapatang pantao at ang papel ng kabataan dito.

News: UPIS elem students secure spots in 2016 YES Awards


Four UPIS students from Grades 3-6 were recognized as part of the 2016 Class of Youth Exellence in Science (YES) Awardees at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay last February 1.

John Vaughn Nicholas Tobias (Grade 3), Marie Emmanuelle Martinez (Grade 4), Erwyn Aenas Vibal (Grade 5), and Phoemela Ashley Mari Talabucon (Grade 6) were awarded a medal each. They received 4 out of the total 821 medals given nationwide.

Tobias won a gold medal at the 2016 China Primary Math Olympiad in China last July. On the other hand, Martinez and Vibal won bronze and silver respectively at the 12th International Mathematics Competition in Singapore last August 2016. Talabucon won a bronze medal at the 13th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary School 2016 last November in Singapore.

Each of the four students trained for 12 Saturdays from November 2015-February 2016 in the Mathematics Trainers Guild. In April 2016, they were then chosen to undergo the Young Mathematician's In-House Intensive Training Program, where qualified students are chosen to compete internationally.

The qualifiers train under the Mathematics Olympiad Summer Training Program for 6 weeks straight, 6 days a week. This program determines in which country they will compete.

The Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) organizes the event annually young students with exemplary achievements in Science and Mathematics are recognized. Winners of international competitions in the said fields are given the Secretary’s Medal.

UPIS nanindigan laban sa paglilibing kay FM sa LNMB



Nagtipon ang mga estudyante ng UPIS 7-11 upang ipahayag ang kanilang opinyon laban sa paglilibing kay dating Pangulong Ferdinand E. Marcos Jr. (FM) sa Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) noong Nobyembre 18, 2016 sa ganap na 11:30 ng tanghali sa UPIS Quadrangle.

Ang pagtitipon ay pinangunahan at inorganisa ng Pamunuan ng Kamag-aral (pKA) 7-10. Ang pKA ay nauna nang magplano ng programa sakaling i-anunsyo ang petsa ng paglilibing kay Marcos sa LNMB. “Sa totoo lamang po, ang programa na isinagawa noong Biyernes ay simula pa lamang ng iba't ibang programa na binabalak ilunsad ng Kamag-Aral ukol sa isyu. Sa katunayan, kami rin ay nakapagplano na po ng programa sakaling i-anunsyo ang petsa ng paglilibing kay Marcos sa LNMB. Nagulat talaga kami nang malaman naming sa tanghali ding iyon mismo ililibing ang diktador, ngunit hindi po namin itinigil ang paglulunsad ng programa,” paliwanag ni Ron Castro, ang pangulo ng pKA 7-10.

Nagpahayag ng pagtutol aang ilang mag-aaral na mailibing sa LNMB ang dating pangulo.. Ilan sa mga puntong binanggit ng mga estudyante ay ang hindi paghingi ng tawad ng pamilya Marcos sa mga inhustisya noong panahon ng Martial Law. Binanggit rin nila na hindi ito makatarungan para sa mga naging biktima ng panahong iyon lalo na iyong mga desaparecidos.

Opisyal na binuksan ni Bb. Iszy Taj Ono Catangcatang ng Kilusang Araling Panlipunan (KAP) 3-6 ang programa na sinundan ng pagpapahayag ng saloobin ng mga kinatawan ng KAP, UPIS Media Center (MC), Freshmen Association (FA), Sophomores’ Association (SoA), Juniors’ Association (JA), Senior Council (SC), Grado 11, at pKA 7-10. Nag-alay naman ng awitin ang grupo nina Jomer Dula, Rene Rollon II at Franz Candido.

Matapos ang pagpapahayag ng mga saloobin ay nagkaroon din ng noise barrage bilang tanda ng pagtutol ng UPIS sa paglilibing kay Marcos sa LNMB.

“Tinuloy po namin dahil ang layunin namin ay una, maipaalam sa lahat ang saloobin ng mga mag-aaral kaugnay ng pasyang mailibing si dating Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos; ikalawa, mahikayat ang mga iskolar ng bayan ng UPIS na magkaroon ng paninindigan sa mga isyu ng lipunan; at ikatlo, ipahayag na di-kailanman pahihintulutang magtagumpay ang kawalan ng hustisya sa ating bansa. Hangad lang po namin na maging mulat at muling buhayin ang diwang ISKO sa bawat mag-aaral ng UPIS,” pahiwatig ni Castro ukol sa mga layunin ng programa.

Samantala, ilang mag-aaral din ng UPIS, kabilang ang pKA, ang lumahok sa pagkilos na isinagawa ng nagkaisang UP Diliman (UPD), Ateneo de Manila University, at Miriam College noong parehong araw, 4:00 n.h.

UPIS delegates envision new economic themes in NYC 13



Ten students from the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) participated in the 13th National Youth Congress (NYC) with the theme New Eyes on Development: Deciphering the Trend of Economic Growth last November 19-20 held at the GT-Toyota Auditorium and the UP School of Economics.

The National Youth Congress is an annual convention that serves as an avenue for high school students nationwide to gain introduction to the field of economics and recognize its relevance in solving the issues of our society. This year’s NYC gives emphasis on the role of agriculture in our economic development and was presented by the UP Economics Society, UP School of Economics Student Council, and the New York Times International Edition.

Grade 10 students Alex Arugay, Jarod de Luna, Marlon Nahial, Fred Samonte, and Patience Ventura together with Grade 9 students Michael Casama, Elijah Galang, Bryant Galicia, Sheena Labordo, and Eunice Ruivivar were chosen as delegates for this year’s convention. The delegates were assigned to various events of the convention, namely, the INK Pre-event Individual Essay Writing Contest that tackled pressing issues in the country, Quiz Bee, and the SPARK Idea Generation Contest (Sparkonomics) where they generated policies or programs for an assigned non-government organization. Participants were grouped into 12 teams of delegates from different schools for Sparkonomics.

De Luna, Galang, and Ruivivar joined the quiz bee while other delegates participated in the Amazing Race on the first day. The second day saw talks from different experts and the SPARK contest. Jonjon Sarmiento, Prof. Emmanuel Esguerra, Prof. Richard Heydarian, Rosemarie Edillon, and former Senator Mar Roxas discussed agriculture, the past focusing on the Aquino administration, cross-country comparison, looking forward with the Duterte administration, and anti-poverty programs, respectively.

The groups of Arugay, Casama, Galang, Labordo, Nahial, and Ventura won the SPARK contest. Nahial was also a finalist of the INK essay writing contest.
Together with the official UPIS delegates, Grade 10 students Nona Catubig, Phil Cosep, Gwenn Dulay, and Roan Ticman along with Grade 9 students Aldric De Ocampo, Elkan Reyes, Christian Sarabia, and Lander Suguitan submitted a video entry entitled “Rezealiency” prior to the convention. The short film which explored various calamities that affect the rural sector was UPIS’ entry to LUX’s Video-Making Contest.

The delegates and other participants were hand-picked by Economics teachers Ms. Taj Catangcatang, Prof. Allen Villota, Ms. Frauline Tadle, and Prof. Lorina Calingasan through essay writing. The team trained 2 hours a week for one month by having crash courses with Ms. Pat Santos about macroeconomics and the UP Debate Society on “method, matter, manner.” They also held mock debates and quiz bees to prepare for the events. //by Trisa de Ocampo and Hanzvic Dellomas
