UPIS Table Tennis outsmashed in UAAP

UPIS struggled in the first two days of table tennis competition held at the Blue Eagle Gym last September 22-23 and 29-30.

UPIS tried to bounce back in the third and fourth day as respective wins from freshman James Ecito and juniors Bryan Gutierez, and Joseph Manal boosted their chances.

The team ended at 7th place with a 2-42 record.

They look to redeem glory next year with a virtually intact line up as no member of the team will be graduating. ● by Trizia Badong, Juanito Gregorio, and Dara Lilang

Izportz: Molave itinaob ang Dao

Tinalo ng Molave ang Dao sa best-of-three na labanan sa basketball na ginananap sa Boston Garden nitong nakaraang linggo lamang.

Mainit ang simula ng Dao nang maagang mag-init ang star player na si Melvin Sangalang. Tumulong din sa pagkuha ng lamang ang mga gwapo na sina Jerem Esguerra, Juanito Gregorio, at Migo Carreon na naka-ilang puntos rin. Nakuha ng Dao ang unang laban, 15-8.

Bumawi naman kaagad ang Molave sa pangunguna ng napakatinding si Herwin Lor na nagpakita ng kanyang gilas at talento sa paglalaro ng basketball. Tinulungan din siya ng nag-iisang VAAS ng basketball na si Russell Mercado at import na si Patrick Sajol na galing Kamagong. Nagbaboy ng laro ang Dao ng kaunti na naging rason ng pagkuha ng Molave ng tagumpay sa pangalawang laban sa iskor na 15-11.

Naging mainit ang pangatlong laban ng mapagtanto ng parehong koponan na may mango shake na nakapusta. Nasimulan ng Dao ang pangatlong laban sa pangunguna ng Black Mamba King na si Gabo Galao na tinulungan din ng sidekick niyang si Sangalang. Ngunit nagliyab ang kamay ng big 3 na si Mercado, Lor at Sajol na nagpaulan ng sunod-sunod tres. Naging sapat na ang apat na tres upang makamit nila ang panalo sa huling laro 15-13.

Sa kasamaang palad ay walang dalang pera ang mga manlalaro ng Dao kaya nauwi na lamang sa dalawang boteng Summit ang napalunan ng Molave. ● nina Juanito Gregorio at Aaron Lina

UPIS team wins Teen Debate

UPIS won against Philippine Science Highschool in the 7th biennal convention hosted by the Society of Adolescent Medicine of the Philippines, Inc. (SAMPI) held last September 3 at the Diamond Hotel in Roxas Boulevard.

The judges pronounced the UPIS team composed of Red Bartolome, Mikee Neri, and Joanna Pagulayan as the overall winner and Bartolome as the best speaker.

The topic of the debate was “Social Networking: Boon or Bane” which was given last July for the teams to research on UPIS was given the affirmative stand.

The debate consisted of two rounds. The first in which both sides gave two constructive speeches and two rebuttals. The second round was a question and answer portion. There were two guest reactors, one blogger and the other a professor from the UP Institute of Tourism. ● by Aliyah Rojo and Juanito Gregorio

Junior Maroons tramples UE

The Junior Maroons blew past University of the East, 82-67, in their first game of the 2nd round last August 30 at the MOA Arena.

UPIS started red-hot as they scored basket after basket to get the early lead. Defense was also key as they forced multiple turnovers to end the first quarter 24-8.

The 2nd quarter was a Paolo Ancheta show as he put up 15 points in the 2nd quarter. UPIS continued the pace and ended the half with a whopping 29-point lead, 47-18.

The Junior Maroons led as much as 38 in the 2nd half but UE attempted to make a comeback headed by Joshua Viajar. UE cut the lead to 19 in the last one and a half minutes but a flagrant foul penalty 1 on Viajar stopped their momentum. ● by Juanito Gregorio

UPIS loses to league-leading FEU, NU

UPIS suffered big back-to-back losses in the hands of the top two teams in the juniors basketball division of UAAP Season 75.

The Junior Maroons lost to the FEU-Fern Baby Tamaraws by 30, 77-47, last August 11 and to the NU Bullpups by 22, 69-47, last August 14.

FEU raced to a 9-0 run at the start of the game with their tremendous full court defense which forced UPIS to commit turnovers. UPIS’ Gelo Sablan also sprained his ankle with 8 minutes left in the first quarter which added to the woes of the team. UPIS had a run in the third quarter sparked by Josiah Chua but wasn’t enough to catch the raging Tamaraws.

UPIS kept up with NU until the end of the first half, 34-27, but NU started to break away from the game after a four-point play from Biteng and a putback from Cauilan of NU. It was downhill for UPIS from there as they started missing easy shots and turned the ball over a couple of times. ● by Aaron Lina and Juanito Gregorio

UPIS trips Adamson to get first win

The UPIS Junior Maroons chalked up their first win in UAAP season 75 via a come-from-behind victory over the Adamson Baby Falcons, 63-61, at the San Juan Arena last July 25.

Despite struggling offensively during the first three quarters, the Junior Maroons played good defense to stay close behind the Baby Falcons.

Headed by juniors Freddy Pajarillaga and Gelo Sablan, UPIS played catch-up aggressively on both ends of the court by forcing turnovers, scoring easy baskets, and controlling the boards.

With the score tied at 57-all, UPIS exerted one final push and finally got the lead less than a minute left in the ballgame via an undergoal stab and free throw conversion by Sablan.

But it was a steal by Paolo Ancheta which prevented the Falcons from coming back that sealed the game for the Junior Maroons. ● by Aaron Lina and Juanito Gregorio

UPIS goes down in UAAP season-opener

The UPIS Junior Maroons lost its first game in UAAP Season 75 against the UST Tiger Cubs, 77-73, at the San Juan Arena last July 18.

Both teams showed first game jitters as they were scoreless for the first two and a half minutes of the game. UST then went on a 6-0 run but UPIS quickly recovered and finished the first quarter ahead by two, 18-16.

The Tiger Cubs roared to record their biggest lead in the second quarter, 35-23, after forcing the Maroons to turnovers and controlling the game with their offensive rebounding but UPIS trimmed the lead at the end of the half, 42-35.

UPIS was able to tie the game, 71-all, after Diego Dario’s three-pointer but Prince Martin sank a clutch basket to put the game away for UST. ● by Aaron Lina and Juanito Gregorio

UPIS defeats Claret in tune-up game

The UPIS Jr. Maroons won against Claret School of QC, 62-53, in a tune-up game at Claret gym last July 9.

The Jr. Maroons started with a 7-0 run headed by athletic big men, Freddy Pajarillaga and Gelo Sablan. Claret was held scoreless by the Maroons' tenacious defense until the 7 minute mark but it bounced back with a run of their own, ending the quarter 11-9.

UPIS continued its hard-nosed team defense which led to easy scoring opportunities and fast break points to record an 18 point lead halfway through the 3rd quarter. Claret forced some UPIS turnovers and trimmed the lead, 38-26.

UPIS was still in control of the game until the last 5 minutes but Claret got back by hitting back-to-back threes. The UPIS lead was down to 4 when Adam Lopez and Freddy Pajarillaga sank in clutch baskets. Riel Labao converted a fast break lay up to close the game, 62-53. ● by Aaron Lina & Juanito Gregorio
