Batch 2019 holds UPIS Job Fair 2016-2017



Batch 2019 held the UPIS Job Fair 2016-2017 at the UPIS 7-12 ramp area last May 16.

The activity was done as a practical application of the lessons taught in their CA English 10 Business Communication class, particularly writing business letters and resumes, conducting and preparing for job interviews, and sending acceptance and rejection messages.

Awards were given to selected students and booths per section. Frequency, Sik-Love, and Oshop Peace were awarded as best booths for 10-Lauan, 10-Molave, and 10-Yakal respectively. Kobe Rivera and Chesca Joves of 10-Lauan, Jean Sabate and Telet Papa of 10-Molave, and Gian Palomeno and Yssa Luna were chosen as best dressed for each section.

Resulta ng Halalan 2017, inanunsyo na



Inanunsyo ang resulta ng Halalan 2017 para sa Pamunuan ng Kamag-Aral (pKA) 3-6 at 7-10, at Year-Level Organizations (YLO) noong Mayo 16.

Nanalo ang lahat ng miyembro ng partidong KAmpilan para sa pKA 7-10, sa pamumuno ni Erika Sasazawa (Pangulo) at Magan Basilio (Pangalawang Pangulo), maliban sa posisyon ng tagapamahayag na walang kandidatong tumakbo.

Nanalo rin ang buong KApit-bisig para sa pKA 3-6 sa pangunguna ni Erwyn Aenas Vibal (Pangulo) at Patricia Niña Chua (Pangalawang Pangulo). Nanalo rin ang independent candidate na si Patricia Leguiab bilang kinatawan ng Grado 5.

Ang Senior Council (SC) sa susunod na taon ay pamumunuan ni Jana Neri (Pangulo) samantalang abstain naman ang naging resulta para sa mga posisyong ingat-yaman at tagapamayapa.

Lahat ng organisasyon ay may mga posisyong nanatiling bakante na siyang pupunuan sa susunod na akademikong taon na pangungunahan SC at Executive Committee ng UPIS.

Dalawang beses iniurong ang mga deadline ng pagpasa ng mga Certificate of Candidacy at mga interview dahil sa kakulangan ng mga kumakandidato. Nagkaroon din ng recount ng mga boto sa Grado 9 dahil sa void ballots ngunit hindi nito naapektuhan ang resulta.

Spoof Sports: Caba, Kappa wagi sa UAAP 1738 Walk-in-Heels event



Nag-uwi ng mga medalya ang dalawang atleta mula sa UPIS sa Walk-in-Heels 7-inch Division event sa UAAP 1738 Track and Field Competition na ginanap noong Pebrero 14, 2017 sa ULTRA MEGA Sports Complex, Pasay.

Nagkamit ng silver medal ang team captain na si Smebma Caba, habang bronze medal naman ang nakuha ni Husma Kappa, na nagbigay sa kanilang koponan ng malaking bilang puntos.

Ayon kay Caba, dikit ang naging labanan sa pagitan nila ng nakakuha ng gintong medalya na nagmula sa AMA Dinosaur Walkers. “Sa katunayan nga sa sobrang dikit namin, muntik na kaming magkapalit ng mukha. Lucky Manzano naman niya kung ganoon, kaya medyo binigay ko na sa kaniya [ang panalo], mukhang mas kailangan niya yun eh,” dagdag nito.

Di umano’y nagbangaan din ng mga balakang ang dalawang manlalarong ito sa kanilang todohang pagkembot. Ayon sa isang official ng laro na si Shamcey Supsup, bilib na bilib siya sa ipinakitang performance ng dalawang ito. Ani nito, “OMG! Di ako makapaniwala na these boys are beating my signature ‘Tsunami Walk.’ Kabog ako bes, props to them ha.”

Naging masaya naman si Kappa sa naging resulta ng kompetisyon. Ani niya, “’Di ko talaga inasahan na magkaka-medal ako, first time ko kaya itechiwa. Basta ikinembot ko na lang to the highest level at gib na gib talaga akey sa pagcrembrulè, ‘yung pak na pak!” Ito ang unang taon ni Kappa ng paglahok sa Walk-in-Heels event.

Kamuntikang ma-disqualify si Kappa matapos maapakan ang kanyang paa ng isang kalaban na kanyang nakagirian. “Beh, composure lang talaga. Masakit, trulagence, pero you have to endure the pain para manalo. Bukod pa sa masakit, nalurkey akez kasi nasira niya yung bagong paayos kong nails. Pero all for the team talaga,” paglalahad niya.

Sa kabilang banda, ang kanilang kasama sa parehong event na si Phurrr Daperstaym ay hindi pinalad na makasama sa finals dahil siya ay na-disqualify dahil sa paglabag sa rule na ‘grace under pressure’ kung saan dapat ay laging nakangiti ang mga manlalaro. “Nakaka-disappoint kasi bet na bet ko na yung performance ko at leading pa ako noong una, kaso napa-simangot ako bigla noong lumingon ako at nakita ko ang fez nung kalaban, kaya ayun. Di ko alam, sobrang nakakadismaya talaga nung nakita ko eh. Pero confidently beautiful with a heart pa rin ako kasi ket papano nagawan ko pa ng paraan ituloy kahit nalugi ako nang bonggang-bongga!” ang chismax ni Daperstaym.

Ang event na ito ay tinaguriang “The Sports for Real Men” at ang may mga pinaka-mahigpit na mga rules sa buong UAAP. Ilan sa mga rules na ito ang nabanggit nang grace under pressure, walang matatapilok at walang aaray. Isa pang rule ay ang “Thou Shall Not Break thy Heels” kung saan ang dapat ay hindi maputol and kanilang takong na gawa sa glass slippers ni Ateng Cindy habang naglalakad. Kapag ito ay naputol madidisqualify at may multa na P50,000 worth of heels sa Chanelle.

Nagkamit ng ikatlongt gantimpala ang buong team sa pagtatapos ng kompetisyon. Sinabi ng tatlong manlalarong ito na sila ay lalaban pa sa susunod na season. “Next year, tatlo na kami sa podium! News: UPIS students participate in NARIT Astronomy Camp


Adrian Bornilla and RD Novilla of 11-F. Del Mundo participated in the 2017 NARIT (National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand) Astronomy Camp held last January 24 – 26, 2017 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

They spent the 4-day camp together with 34 other students from different ASEAN countries.

NARIT established the annual camp in 2015 as a way to educate the ASEAN region regarding astronomy. It is certified by UNESCO and International Astronomical Union.

The camp’s activities in the camp focused on the basics of astronomy. The highlight of the camp was the stargazing activity where the participants were taught about constellations and other celestial bodies, measuring the angle of elevation of stars with respect to the horizon and how the stars relate to each other. There were other ice breakers, team activities and lectures on the topic.

Bornilla said that, other than astronomy, they also learned Thai and other ASEAN countries’ languages from the experience. He added that the experience was unforgettable for it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about astronomy and other cultures.

Sports: UPISVST Girls clinches 3rd in UAAP 79

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Girls Varsity Swimming Team swam their way to third place of the UAAP Season 79 Swimming Competition held on October 21-24 at the Rizal Memorial Complex.

The girls tallied a total of 238 points for their third straight 2nd runner-up finish since 2014.

Their spectacular performance was led by Zoe Hilario's record-breaking swim in the 400M Individual Medley where she timed 5:22.87 breaking the former record, 5:22.97, by a heart stopping millisecond.

“I felt really happy and proud,” Hilario said. “I didn’t know that I had the capacity to break the record.”

The team took home 15 medals with Hilario bagging a total of 7: 1 gold, 5 silvers, and a bronze. Charize Esmero won 4 medals, taking the gold in the 100M backstroke event, silver in both 800M and 400M freestyle, and bronze in 200M backstroke. Chloe Fabic also added a bronze medal in the 200M butterfly.

Esmero and Fabic, together with Isabel Baclig and Chesca Joves, took home the bronze in the 4x100 freestyle relay while Joves, her sister Franz, and juniors Rodgers and Luan Silvestre, won the silver from the 4x50 medley. Suzy Uy, Mae Rodgers, Jammy Mapa, and Waya Silarde earned a bronze in the 4x50 freestyle relay.

According to the girls’ team, they prepared well for this season. They trained every day and set a winning mindset before the season started. Moreover, they encourage each othe to do their best.

The UPIS Boys Swimming Team, on the other hand, finished 6th in the tournament. Veteran Drew Magbag led the team with 2 silvers and 1 bronze.

“I always try my best not to miss a day without swim,” said Drew Magbag when was asked about his personal preparations. “You dream, you plan, you work for it, and you achieve it,” he added.

Boys’ team captain JN Fajutagana said that they also prepared well for Season 79. “Nagcompare kami ng mga times namin sa relays kaso yung ibang teams lumakas,” he explained. “Next year mas magtetraining kami and mas magfofocus,” he promised. // with reports from Jaggie Gregorio, Nathan Ramos, Carlos Laderas, Blade Saliva, and Forth Soriano

Opinion: There is No Such Thing as Irrelevant Education

Mankind needs enough skills and knowledge to survive this age. If you aren’t skilled or wise enough, you’ll have a higher tendency to end up at the bottom of the competition. These societal statements are the reason behind the desire of every single person to have a proper education. Everyone wants this for it is believed to be the key to success, the key to a decent life.

If education is truly essential, why do we question the relevance of every lesson taught to us? Why do we ask if some of these are really necessary or relevant? What really is relevant education for?

We acknowledge topics that cater to our interests, and criticize the applicability of those that we do not favor. This is how we come up with the term “relevant education” which consists of topics or lessons necessary in life, particularly in chosen future professions. Relevant education should provide the necessary skills and knowledge the field demands.

Thus, schools should not fill students with too much knowledge they wouldn’t need for too much of anything has negative effects. A school’s administration should know how to properly allocate the amount of lessons or topics given in a certain subject so that the students wouldn’t have a hard time coping with the topics. Balance is needed to lessen the pressure on students and teachers, as well.

Imagine that what you are doing right now is something you really like. Wouldn't things be easier than if you are doing something you do not favor? Apply this scenario to the system of education. Students will find it easier to study if they know that what they’re studying is necessary for their life in the future.

When each and every one of us loves what we do and becomes really good at it, it is truly beneficial for the society. The quality of work done by the people would be better, and as a result, it would help make the economy flourish. Education will be the spark of this scheme. Once students know and love their profession, they’d study more about it and as a result, they’ll hopefully be exceptional in their chosen field.

As a student, I can say that I receive relevant education. I feel that I’m receiving the right amount of lessons and developing the right set of skills though some subjects go beyond my limitations.

However, when you really think about it, there is no such thing as topics that are not needed in life. Everything that we learn can add up to our skills and knowledge. We may say things like “I don’t even need this when I grow up” because some topics are either explained briefly or too specifically which make them difficult to learn. What students need nowadays is basic education and the right introduction of topics. By providing these, we can figure out what profession we want and we can study further what we have to.

There is no such thing as irrelevant education. We encounter a lot of experiences, learn lessons, and find out about a lot of things. All these things would come in handy later in life. As long as we are learning, our knowledge and abilities would continue to grow. Do not take things, which you feel are not part of your chosen profession, for granted.

Education is the key to success and, in my opinion, also happiness. Let us live life with our desired profession in mind so that we will be happy with and interested in what we do. As a result, a better community would be in the future for every one of us. Let us enjoy learning a lot of new things and be open to what life brings us.

Education will never be irrelevant so give it importance and make the most out of it. / by Forth Soriano
