Left for her by her grandmother, long ago, was an envelope.
She was told that she would know when she would need to open
it, that something would tell her that she should. The envelope
felt warm in her hands.

Each fingertip glowed a warm orange. Radiating heat as though
her fingers were small candles. She didn't understand what
it meant; it felt so foreign to her yet so right. She was calm during
this strange moment.

Gazing at the sky, she raised her hands as if to reach out to them.
Small balls of light began rising from the tips of her fingers,
racing as fast as they can before dissolving into the air. She
was ecstatic, her mind was racing with what she could do with
these newfound powers.

Abilities come at a price though. Those who she thought were friends,
abandoned her, those around her grew scared of what she was able
to do. She began to keep what made her special a secret. She
began hiding away in her home, the only place where she felt that
she was accepted.

Cathartic for her was the thought of the old envelope. Her fingertips
glowed brighter and brighter as she got near it. She knew that now
was the time for her to open it, she thinks that it might have something
to do with this newfound ability of hers and it might offer her
an explanation.

"You opening this envelope means that you've awakened, and now, you're
looking for answers," the letter read. She nodded in agreement.
"The light is something special, something that’s been passed on from
generation to generation. l hope you wish to continue it.” She continues
reading the contents of the letter and as her eyes trail to the end of it, she
sees, “If you do wish to carry it on, meet me an hour past midnight on the corner of your street the day you opened this letter.”

She looked at the clock beside her bed. 12:34 AM. A blaze of light trailed from the house to the street.

“Best”

“Friends”

Bawat labang hinaharap, ika’y nandyan, maaasahan.

“The newest invention for the safety of our community! The Choice of Hardship and Risk Intervention System, or C.H.R.I.S., for short! No need to be nervous or scared again when you have C.H.R.I.S.! It calculates your every move so that you can be confident that nothing will go wrong or put you in danger!”

You hear a button click and a bunch of whirring sounds from somewhere. You can’t quite see anything due to it being incredibly dark. Suddenly, lines of text appear in front of you that say Power on. A familiar voice says:

I am the Choice of Hardship and Risk Intervention or C.H.R.I.S. I am here to prevent any sort of danger or unfortunate outcome from happening, how may I help you?

Next to the lines of text, a screen appears showing the face of a thin teenager with black hair and tired looking eyes. He wears a faded blue sweater and the edge of his hair touches the top of his eyes. He stares directly at you.

“A-Are you working?” he asks.

A keyboard suddenly appears in front of you.

“Uhh, h-hello, are you working?” he asks again.

You feel inclined to approach the keyboard and type out an answer for him. You get a weird feeling, as though you had to reply.

“Hello, are you okay?” you type.

Suddenly, more words appear under the lines of text from earlier.

Hello, my name is C.H.R.I.S. How may I help you?

These weren’t the words you put in, but it was close enough.

The teenager’s eyes open wide, as if he had just seen a ghost. “You work? Oh my god, maybe you really can help me. Is it true you can help me out so that I don’t make mistakes anymore? Is that true?” the teenager shakes the screen, arms outstretched.

It feels like he’s in dire need of an answer, like he needed help badly.

You start with something simple. “What’s the matter? Are you okay? What’s going to happen?” The voice spoke and text appeared once again.

Is there anything I can help you with?

He stares at you again. This time his body droops, arms still holding the screen. He looks down, as if he is hiding something, then he looks at both of his arms.

You realize what it is he has trouble saying.

Your hands whir on the keys. You want to comfort him, to say something, anything, just to put him at ease. “Please. It’s going to be okay. You shouldn’t feel that anymore, nobody should. I don’t know who you are, and I don’t know if you’re going to tell me, but I hope you do. I hope to learn more about you and I want to see more of you in the future. Please.”

The voice and text that came along with the words don’t come.

The teenager’s arms drop. You hear sharp breaths coming from him. His hands slowly go up to his face.
“How do I become better? How can I prevent messing up?” he manages to let out.

You take a deep breath and type as fast as you could. Words that would comfort him, words that would let him know that it would be alright, words that would let him know that he has a chance out there in the world. Your hands typed, but as soon as you hit enter, no words appeared on the screen and the voice remained silent.

He sits there in silence as the clatter of the keys reverberate around the room until a screen to your left flashes with red text: Warning! You have entered too many invalid commands. Too many invalid commands? Is it talking about the words of comfort I’ve been trying to give? It won’t let me reach him?

Do you want to allow free input? Y/N

Your finger immediately presses the Y key, not thinking about the repercussions or the risks that it might bring, just as long as you can reach him. Your hands freeze above the keyboard thinking about what to tell him now that you can. You think about whether it would be relevant to comfort him about his problems or to just try and solve it. You look at the one of the very first lines that was said. That was your intended purpose, right? To try and prevent negative outcomes. You start typing.

There is no absolute way to become better. There is no safe way of doing so.

He raised his head up toward you, staring at you with raised eyebrows and confused eyes.

The ability to become better is fueled by risk, mistakes, but also learning. To try and better yourself means to pick and choose those who you will listen to, to see what is relevant and what is needless chatter. To prevent mistakes is to be content with what you have, to be complacent. Complacency counters becoming better because you are content with who you are.

“But isn’t that what you’re built to do? To prevent mistakes and unfortunate events?”

That is true, I was created to prevent unfortunate events, but not mistakes. I was created to formulate plans so that people would be more confident about their actions, and so that is what I am doing. I am encouraging you to make mistakes to learn from them, for it will be okay.

He stares at you, not moving from his spot, deep in thought.

So what are you going to do?

3rd time’s the charm.
To get my point across
I’ll tell you about the 1st time I tried.
It was marked up 4 loss.

I still remember the 1st time
We stayed together from 5
And I waited with you ‘til 9.
The 2 of us talked ‘til your father arrived.

To my surprise, suddenly, 6 were waiting.
Not counting you, 5 were there sitting
Then 3 went away at 5 o’clock,
‘Til 8 or 9, we sat there on the rocks.

Friendship befell us around the 7th month,
But you had chosen someone else before the 9th had struck
For I had decided on that month, I’d tell you 3 words
But for the 2 months that were left, I had no luck.

So those 3 words, I told someone else,
But for 8 months, it wasn’t for me to tell
The first 4 were spent moving on from you
And then 6, yet it still wouldn’t do.

That was my 2nd time, I knew it was bad.
After 6 weeks had passed,
I knew that my heart was still 4 you.
Telling you those 3 words was way overdue

So here we are, 3rd time’s the charm.
Over 8 months, but my heart still feels warm.
3 words I want to tell
And they’re just for you.

I love you.

I hope you love me 2.

I have realized, I have known
That our feelings are best forsaken and thrown
Despite all the signs the universe has shown
Still I am here hoping you would not leave me all alone

You have realized, you have known
To erase the memories our love has drawn
To me, a mask of cold emotions you’ll don
But such an act also leaves you on your own

We have realized, we have known
That even if we agreed to move on
Our hearts still beat with the same tone
Now we’re left with no choice but to wait for tomorrow’s dawn

We will never realize, we will never know
How we could ever let go
When we still hear our promises bellow…
Why was our time only there to borrow?

For you to see, for me to have shown
These hardships that I have made known
To make you think that what we feel should be thrown
Please do not think that I will leave you on your own

I knew that this is what our feelings would come to
But still, I chose to be with you
These moments and memories that we’ve been through
Remains with me inside, even though you think they’re untrue

But with these emotions that I made you view
The pain you’ve felt that I can never undo
All of these things that I wish we could redo
But it seems that waiting for tomorrow’s dawn is all we can do

We will never realize, we will never know
How we could ever let go
When our hearts, to each other they look to
I’ll make sure to make whole what was broken in two.

Literary: Dusk

It’s almost night time.

The various shades of red, pink, orange, and blue crash into each other, one crossing over the other.

It looks like a painting. I don’t know, dusk always seems like a painting to me. Lights spray the ground with shades of yellow, clouds are painted as if by a professional, the brush seemingly stroked carelessly but ending up precise and perfect. The colors blend, overlapping, but growing fainter as a dark blue overtakes them all.

The sky is starting to get darker.

I’ve been waiting a while, just watching these clouds go by. As the sky changes, I see the sun hide behind the trees, slowly taking its color with it. You’re certainly taking your time.

My legs are starting to become impatient, my mind wandering about where you are. Did you get lost? You know your way around here. Did you get side-tracked? That’s certainly one possibility. Did you forget about me? I- You’re not the kind of person to forget.

…Right?

Lights started to flicker on around me.

All around me, street lamps and car lights turn on, one by one, illuminating the growing night. Fireflies start coming out, dancing around each other in pairs. My eyes follow them as they fly towards the sky that’s littered with little stars, welcomed by the moon and bade farewell by the sun.

I look down and my eyes fall upon you, surrounded by the lights as if they were yours to keep.

Cars are moving fast.

Red and blue lights fall upon you as you’re surrounded by more cars. The sounds of sirens and voices mix together to create a haze of heat and worry. More cars move past, unperturbed by the scene. You’re lying in a mess of dirt, debris, and blood.

This is why you were late. This is why you kept me waiting.

People are walking.

They walk by you as if they don’t care, sometimes taking a glance at the person right there. The looks they give are as if it was only another poor dog run over by a car.

But you’re not.

It’s quiet, but the silence is overwhelming.

The murmur of people, the sound of the cars, the barking of dogs. All of them start to fade away, becoming muffled and turning into silence.

I can’t breathe. This wasn’t supposed to happen.

Everything is moving yet time makes it seem still somehow.

Literary: "I Do."

You were dancing along ahead of me.
“You really love saying that don’t you?” I said with a smile.
“I do!” you cheered.
I balanced along the bricks of the sidewalk
“Do you ever want to get married?”I asked as my smile grew bigger.
“I do,” you stated with a small giggle.
“Aaand you know that I love you, right?” I inquired while walking faster, trying to catch up to you.
“I do,” you answered as you twirled and circled around me
“So why don’t we get married?” I asked, louder than I would’ve wanted.
“I...don’t want to,” you said as your dance slowed and got closer to me.
“Why?” I’m trying to reach out to you and dance along.
“I have my reasons.” You’re avoiding my attempts to get to you, and so you stumble and fall.
You just kept laughing even though you fell and scraped your knee. I took out my handkerchief and wrapped it around your wound.
“Geez, it’s like you’re not even hurt!” I exclaimed while helping you get up on your feet.
“Of course I get hurt, silly, it’s just that I don’t show it,” you explained as you ran ahead of me like nothing happened.
I stopped right there and watched you run, back turned to me.
“Hey!” I shouted, calling out to you.
“Do you ever get sad, then?” I asked.
You turned to me with a tear-stained face.
“I do.”

Literary: Projection

"What is this?” I asked you with a light chuckle, as we stood in front of a door.

"You'll find out,” you said with a smile as you grabbed my hand and excitedly pulled me into the room.

It was dark and the only source of light was coming from a laptop at the center of the room. You let go of my hand and quickly went over to the laptop and flashed me a smile. There was a projector near the laptop and as you took off its cover, my eyes grew wide.

Stars suddenly surrounded me. Every inch of the room was covered by the luminescence of these distant lights. They looked so real. So...

"How did you d-,” you looked at me with a shrug and I knew you weren't going to tell me. I just smiled as you smiled back at me.

I don't know how long we were in there, just looking at the stars passing by around us as we were lying on the floor, trying to imagine where constellations were. We lost our sense of time, but it felt like it didn't matter at all. We were just wandering in the vast expansion of space and nothing else was important. It was like we were in...

"Our own little universe."

I had whispered to myself, not noticing that a large smile had formed in my face. You nudged me and told me that there was a shooting star and I should make a wish. I gently held your hand.

I didn’t need to. It had already come true.

Literary: For You

My alarm started blaring.

I reached for my phone to see what time it is.

5:30AM with a little reminder that said "It's our anniversary! :)"

I smiled as I got up from my bed. I washed my face. I took a bath. I wore my best suit and tie and hurried out; I didn't want to be late.

I got in my car and drove to the flower shop we always went to and bought a bouquet of your favorite flowers. The store clerk asked me what the occasion was and I said it was our anniversary. Since the clerk knew us well, she gave me a smile and a pat on the back.

I went to our favorite coffee shop afterwards and bought our usual. Then I ran to the shop to buy you a card. A reminder rang on my phone.

5:30PM that said: "You're late! >:("

I drove to our favorite spot, which was a place next to a large tree on a cliff overlooking the whole city. I sat down next to the tree with the bouquet and card. Tears started streaming down my face as I carefully placed them down next to your grave.

"I miss you, dear. Happy Anniversary."

Literary: Three Words

“In spite of everything that’s happened,

Every awful thing I’ve done
So much time of yours has been wasted,

Just so many things I can’t outrun.
I don’t expect you to forgive me
Even if I wasn’t ready
I just really wanted you to know

‘I am sorry.’"

"With everything that has happened--

All the hurt you gave
And pain you've caused--

I wish I can outrun it all
I wish I can forgive you.
But I'm still not ready and
I think I will never be.

"I am sorry.'"

Literary: The Show

“I will make you beautiful.”
But you already are
“I will make you perfect.”
Why do you look so far?

Masks that we wear
For this show you put on
Stood on the stage
That “happiness” you don

With that smile that I see
And those eyes of yours that glimmer,
I watch ‘til your spotlight
Gets dimmer and dimmer

As the ray of light fades
Your mask, you remove
Your true face reveals
A look as graceful as you move

A quick smile flashes
Before sorrow takes over
This scene comes to an end
And quickly you cover

I swiftly catch up
Before you can go
This scene might’ve ended
But not the show

I turn you around,
A look of surprise you portray
“Such beauty, such perfection…”
“A leading lady?” I say

You give off a chuckle
You start off with “Well…”
With a flattered little smile
Your answer you tell.

Literary: Kahit Kailan

Noon

Ngunit noong tayo'y naglalaro at nagsasaya,
Ito ang panahong nanatili sa aking alaala

Ngayon
Ngunit ano itong aking nararamdaman?

At tinanong tungkol sa pag-ibig kong 'to

Literary: Tense

Past

What happened:
Something haunting, yet happy
Feeling tired, yet ecstatic
Somehow calm, yet emphatic
Tension higher, voices louder
Until one side is pronounced victor
Yet within, both sides know
Neither is a winner.

Present

What is happening now:
Something broken, mind cluttered
Not knowing whether to let go or hold on.
Nostalgia mixing with regret
Inept at seeing where you went wrong
Going darker and darker,
Not knowing what you desire.
You're just losing your path,
In your confusion you'll bask.

Future

What will happen:
Something
Is all that's revealed.
A glimmer of light
Is that which you see.
But there is uncertainty for
Everything
Is concealed.

Literary: Ours

I remember seeing you at a party.

Amongst the chatter and the noise, we were both just seated and enjoying one another's company. We spent each lovely moment whistling songs and singing tunes.

I remember each moment as if it just happened last night. The small whispers and chuckles we shared. We made our own little song in the dark, and there was one particular song of mine that you had liked. We sang that throughout the night.

Alas, as all songs have endings, so does ours. We parted ways. I arrived home, crawled into bed and slept. A familiar sound then awakened me from my sleep. It was my alarm, though it had me grinning. It was the song that we kept repeating. It was the song that you loved.

Though to my ears, the song sounded different—different in a way that no one could ever see. To me that song was our whispers and laughter. It was the time we spent together.

It was the pleasure of having you there.

It was the song that only we could hear.
