Literary (Submission): Once Upon A Time

10/31/2013 08:12:00 PM Media Center 2 Comments

He sits down on the grass, beside me, with his hands protectively on his backpack. “I brought you something,” he says, a small smile dancing on his pale pink lips. I raise my eyebrows questioningly but he doesn’t see them. I ask him what it is that he brought for me but he doesn’t hear me.

He chews on his bottom lip – something he does when he’s nervous or excited, or both. I nudge his left side with my right elbow, trying to let him know that I’m ready for my surprise, but he doesn’t feel it. He takes a deep breath and slowly unzips his bag, taking his time in revealing what’s inside. “I know you’re looking,” he says just as I was about to peek over his shoulder for a better view. I immediately shake my head and close my eyes but he doesn’t notice.

A few seconds later, I feel something soft tickle my nose. I open one eye out of curiosity and I see two brown eyes staring back at me. I open my other eye out of excitement and I see a black nose and a smile made from red thread. I blink a few times and after a while, I realize that a green bear is right in front of me.

He shakes the bear a few times, making it appear as if it was dancing. “Hi,” he says in a voice that almost doesn’t sound like his own. “My name is Peter and I’m here to make you happy!”

He puts Peter on his lap and plays with its ears, his lips forming a smile. “I was walking around the mall today,” he tells me. “I finally had enough money to buy the sneakers you promised to get me. But, I passed by the toy store you always dragged me into and I saw this on display.” He takes a deep breath and looks up at the sky. “I decided to buy it for you because I know how much you loved stuffed toys and I know how much you adored the color green.” He moves on to Peter’s paws, letting its soft material caress his fingers.

“I know you think I’m a fool for not buying the shoes I’ve always wanted and instead, bought this bear for you…” I shake my head again but he continues. “But, I’ve already wasted all my chances in seeing you smile, making you happy, and letting you know that I really truly am grateful for you and all the things you’ve done for me. So here I am now, with a bear in my hands and a brain in my head that’s making me say all these things I should’ve said a long time ago but was too afraid to, hoping you’d listen because I really need you to,” he tells me as his eyes start to water.

He takes a deep breath and a tear rolls down his cheek. “Thank you for all that you’ve done for me. I wish I did the same for you. Thank you for staying when everyone else left. I wish I stayed by your side, too. Thank you for loving me with all your heart. I honestly wish I had told you that in all the years you’ve been with me. I really, really do love you.”

He looks to his left where I am sitting, where a white marble is embedded on the grass. My name, date of birth, date of death, and a short message are all engraved on it in beautiful cursive. “I miss you terribly. I miss you so. But no matter how many times I say it, I know...” he gently puts Peter on the grass, right beside me, “that you’re never coming back.”

As he lifts himself off the grass I grab his hand. He doesn’t feel it – he can’t, but he stops nonetheless to look at me. “Thank you,” I begin, “for visiting me, for Peter, and for telling me all the words I’ve always wanted to hear.”

I smile at him and he smiles, too.

And in that moment, I felt as if I was still alive and that he and I were together, but that’s a happy ending and those only happen in fairy tales.

And sadly, we aren’t in one. / by Mary Jane

Weights Room

Sa ating paglisan,
Ating balikan
Ang labing-apat na tambayan
Sa ating minamahal na paaralan

****

Dito sila nag-ensayo at nagpalakas.

Song (Submission): The First Day We Met

10/15/2013 08:27:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

The First Day We Met

by Ma. Janella Francisco

I still remember the first day we met
And how you said hello to me that day
Then I thought, “How good can this even get?”
I never thought that one word can brighten up my day

Ever since, when every time I see you,
My heart would skip a beat
And then, my mind would do a triple flip
And at night, before I go to sleep
I’d look at the night sky

And say:
“I wish I may, I wish I might
I see the stars are all out tonight
Can you grant this really simple wish?
I just want to be with you
Even for just a minute or two
Or maybe an hour or day will do
Just be with you
I don’t want to scream it out aloud
‘Cause maybe love was what I found…”

I remember that every time when you pass me by
You would smile with a greeting or two
But all that’s gone now
Please come on and take a bow
All those memories with you
Just seems to be too good to be true
Too good to be true

But still:
“I wish I may, I wish I might
I see the stars are all out tonight
Can you grant this really simple wish?
I just want to be with you
Even for just a minute or two
Or maybe an hour or day will do
Just be with you
I don’t want to scream it out aloud
‘Cause maybe love was what I found…”

Just be with you…

How I wish…

Bird Cage

Sa ating paglisan,
Ating balikan
Ang labing-apat na tambayan
Sa ating minamahal na paaralan

****

Multipurpose Hall

Sa ating paglisan,
Ating balikan
Ang labing-apat na tambayan
Sa ating minamahal na paaralan

****

"Stop the Bull" campaign launched

9/10/2013 08:28:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Members of the Revolution Tour Group came all the way from New Zealand to bring UPIS their anti-bullying campaign entitled “Stop the Bull” last September 5, 2013.
Performers from the Revolution Tour Group of New Zealand
launched their campaign to UPIS student leaders.

With their motto, "No bull at my school", the campaign aims to make a positive change in eliminating all kinds of bullying through spreading their advocacy in schools all over the world.

Their act was filled with singing and dancing but Stop the Bull's highlight was a skit on how bullying is in New Zealand, using it as example to inform the students on why bullies harm others and how they become bullies. A speech was shared about an experience from someone bullied, and on how he discovered why their school bully became one.

The group also shared a little about New Zealand's culture by teaching the students a special dance called Haka. The event ended with a prayer and a promise not to bully or to get bullied. / by Czarina Sikat and Alissa Villareal

Philippine rock icon Ramon “RJ” Jacinto visited UPIS to hold a free group guitar lesson at the Multi-Purpose Hall last September 4.

RJ taught the students to play a few basic chords so they could play the song “Twist” by Chubby Checker together. Ryan Cacho, Carlo Gaco of 9- Platinum and Keith Guzman of 6- Sapphire received free guitars after playing with him onstage.

He also performed “Johnny B. Goode” by Chucky Berry and “Muli”, one of his favorite compositions.

RJ also jammed with Profuzion, a band composed of Grade 10 students, as they performed “Magbalik” and “Noypi”. He also chatted with his young fans and signed autographs after the event. / by Anne Avendano and Red Rivera

Dearest Papa Herbz,

Maraming gamit nami’y tinangay at nakuha.

Even If All Things Fall Apart
by Caitlin Vea Norona

My love, my promise to you
I’ll give you everything I can
The time I spend with you
Is like being in a time with no end

All the things we’ve been through
Is like being in a meadow filled with dew
A man like you only comes once in a lifetime
That’s why I want you to know

Until the earth is still turning
And my heart is still beating
Till the raging seas are still flowing
And the mountains are still standing
The light has turned from bright to dark
You’d always be a part of me
Even if all things fall apart

When I’m with you, I feel closer to heaven
You guide me through everything
You act as my angel

For you’d do anything
To fix all the misunderstanding
Life is like a slide, full of ups and downs
But at least you could try again and turn things around
For...

Until the earth is still turning
And my heart is still beating
Till the raging seas are still flowing
And the mountains are still standing
The light has turned from bright to dark
You’d always be a part of me
Even if all things fall apart
Even if all things fall apart

Literary: Three Years, Three Words

8/30/2013 08:53:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

For almost three years I’ve been going back to a single memory, one that I could never reminisce with anyone about. Except with you.

That point in time was perfect, like a scene from a movie. At the center of a darkened field surrounded by looming trees with laughing students hiding behind the trunks, our silhouettes were facing each other. You asked me what it was that I wanted to say but the tone of your voice hinted that you already knew.  With my heart pounding in my ear, I told you three words.

Afterwards, I ran to my best friend and cried. I don’t think you noticed.

I carried on after that with you being the only structure I had at the moment. But even that you broke down as you left. It was foolish of me to think that saying I love you would make you stay. Those words are heavy but never heavy enough to keep anyone from leaving.

It didn’t seem like you felt anything close to love towards me considering you left for someone else. It didn’t take you a long time to act like it never happened. For three years, you’ve been avoiding me. Trying not to ask anything from me as much as possible, not even looking me in the eye when you talk to me. It was pathetic of you. Or was that your way of being guilty?

What were you supposed to be guilty of anyway? We were both just lying to each other, weren’t we?

It was fun while it lasted, whatever it was that we were three years ago, but all I really want is to be at peace. All I really want is to believe it never happened too.

So I’m letting it go.

I loved the kind things you told me to cheer me up. I loved the silence that hugs us when we’re out of things to say. I loved the plans you made for us that we never got to do. But what I never really loved was you. / by Morpheus

buwan ng wika,

iWitness sa UPIS

8/30/2013 08:08:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

“Malaki yung pasasalamat ko sa [UPIS]. More than just academics, social awareness ‘yung natutunan ko dito” – Kara David

abot-kamay,

Abot–Kamay, isinagawa muli

8/30/2013 08:07:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments
