Nakaiidlip tuwing nasa trabaho at minsa’y napagsasabihan.

Literary: The Light in the Darkness

With a heavy heart and a drained mind, I lay alone in the darkness. Slowly losing my breath, I felt tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t help but feel that no one was there for me, that no one would take me seriously, that I was left alone to win this fight.

I got up, walked towards my desk, and took the notebook that had been tucked away in my drawer. As I opened it, I saw that it was blank. I quickly grabbed a pen and started writing.

With so much going on right now, it’s no surprise that everyone is having difficulty in everything. But I am experiencing something that I have never experienced before. I’m feeling lost, as if I’m in the middle of the ocean. I feel heavy, as if I'm being pulled by gravity. And I feel blank as if my mind is a dead screen.

I didn't know what else to write so I left my notebook on the desk. I walked back to my bed and tried to sleep, but I couldn't. The next thing I knew was that I was crying my eyes out. I eventually cried myself to sleep when, suddenly, I was rudely awakened by a loud roar of thunder. I checked the time and it was almost twelve midnight, I was asleep for less than an hour. This made me mad. Just when I thought I could sleep through my pain, the universe decided not to let me rest. I furiously rubbed my face to wake myself up and I rushed back to my desk.

Why suffer from pain now if I could just go? Go to that place they call paradise, where you don't have to worry about a thing.

I wrote with rage while tears uncontrollably fell on the paper, I was writing with so much force that what I was writing left a mark on the next few pages. I slammed the notebook shut, threw the pen, and banged my head on the desk, making a loud thud. A minute later, while I was repeatedly hitting my head on my table, I heard whining on the other side of my door, followed by a bark. I got up to check who it was. I saw a furry ball with two shiny dots staring at me. It shone like an angel as its fur met with the light. I tilted my head and it tilted its own.

Wiping my tears away, I asked, “Where did you come from, little one?” As I spoke, I saw its tail wagging gently. I let it in and saw that it was a female puppy. I gave her some food and water then I sat by the wall. When she finished, she came to just sit in front of me.

A few minutes passed by and I sniffed a slightly foul odor. I stood up and walked around, looking for the source of the scent. I couldn't find it so I made my way back to my spot; the puppy was still there and as I sat down the odor grew stronger. I found out that it was coming from the puppy, so I gave her a bath. While in the shower, she was calm and patiently waited for the bath to finish; she wasn’t feisty at all. As I was scrubbing her fur, she licked my nose and it looked like she was smiling. I smiled back.

As I rinsed her down, she yelped. I quickly looked for the spot I last rinsed and saw a wound about the size of a dime. I hurriedly dried her up and scrambled to my drawer, looking for a medical kit. I cleaned her wound and gently applied ointment safe for dogs to the scar. When we finished, she kept yawning, then I remembered that I had just recently changed my pillow so I could make a comfy bed for the puppy. I got a plastic box and placed the pillow at the bottom of it. I then got a soft blanket and placed it on top of the box. I carried her and let her go in herself; she was just sniffing it at first but then she eventually lied down.

I sat in front of her box and as we stared at each other, I saw that she slowly started to close her eyes. I stroked her head and soon, she fell asleep. I didn’t realize that I fell asleep, sitting with my head tilted to the side, until I found myself waking up. I checked the time and it was just 12:34 am. I looked down and saw that the puppy was awake too. A thought came to me and I got up, picked her up, and walked towards my desk once again.

October 15, 2020 - 12:35

I just made a new friend. I couldn't help but think, what will happen when I'm gone? What will happen to my friends and family? Who will take care of this little one when I’m gone? I don’t think anyone near would take good care of her if I leave.

When I finished writing, I told myself, “No, I shouldn't do this. I can't leave knowing that the people I love will suffer. Bearing my own pain is far better than causing the pain of many.” I knew that the right thing to do was to endure my pain and suffering. I needed to control myself, find things to distract myself from everything that brought me pain, play with my new friend, talk to my friends, spend time with my family, or, basically, do what made me happy. I decided to give the little one a name, a name that goes well with what I felt that day. I named her Hope. Hearing her name would remind me of what she did and how she helped me.

The following morning, I got dressed along with Hope, called my friends for a meet-up, spent time with my family, took Hope to the park, and went to the beach blasting music. I did the things that would help me calm myself, help me recover, help me regain my strength.

When I got home, I saw the notebook still on my desk. With three pages inked, I ripped all three out. I shredded two of the pages and posted the remaining one on my wall to ask myself: “What will happen when I'm gone? What will happen to all of the people who are close to me? What will happen to my family? Who will take care of this little one when I’m gone?”

The pain that I felt was temporary. Leaving is permanent. I can't go back if I leave. There will be a lot of irreversible damage, to both me and my loved ones. There is still hope during this time; don’t forget, everything happens for a reason. Nothing can keep you imprisoned. Every challenge, whether mental or physical, is just an obstacle. You will face it and overcome it. That is your goal. Don't lose hope.

Sana ri'y pakinggan muna at intindihin

Uuwing pagod dahil may inaasikasong iba

Literary: Arrival

Three days until we meet again, three days till this year's big event… Carnival Day!

- Day one -

My name is Merry, short for Merry-go-round. I am a ride in this carnival and I have been here for about four years already.

One early morning, I woke up because of two voices. I recognized one of them; it was our manager. They were talking about the clean-up schedule today. He mentioned that he had already hired enough workers who would arrive soon. I looked around slowly and saw thick layers of dust on me and the other rides.

I gazed at the morning sky, and after a few minutes, I saw at least ten guys in blue and green uniforms wearing masks. After some time, more guys came and they started to use leaf blowers, water hoses, and damp towels to remove the dust and dirt on everything.

Many hours later, we were all squeaky clean. But one worker said that Octopus, the Octopus ride, had too much dirt on him, and it turned out that the dirt he was talking about was rust.
He was so rusty that he looked like it would cost millions if he were to be fixed, it was quite clear that wasn't going to work as well as he did before.

They said they would sort it out tomorrow since they were to have two test runs for each of us to check our quality and see if they would still include us for the big event.

- Day two -

We were all set and ready for Carnival Day. They approved all the rides except for Octopus. They tried to turn him on but his engine was burned out; he even started to emit smoke. He was broken. When our manager saw what state he was in, he didn't hesitate to say, "He's a goner. Get him outta here. We might get sued if we let him through." Those words struck me like lightning. I kept thinking to myself, "What if he says those exact same words to me one day?" It haunted me since I was also one of the old rides. But I didn't let it bother me.

Anyways, tomorrow is the day, the day we meet. I hope I can make you smile the way you used to every year.

- Day three -

Carnival Day!!!

Opening time! I couldn't wait to see your smiling face and hear your excited little voice. Five years ago, you always enjoyed going to Carnival Day. You always came to visit me and even got in line twice or thrice. You caught my eye; you were the only kid I saw who wasn't screaming for their guardian every now and then. You were smiling, laughing, and bringing out so much positive energy. Since then I knew that you were different.

Hours had already passed since the carnival opened and I still hadn't seen you. I felt sick after multiple rounds, I somehow saw familiar faces here and there. Some faces were slightly familiar but I also got the feeling that they were complete strangers. After all that, there still wasn’t a single sight of your face. Only thirty minutes left till closing. I started to lose hope of you coming to visit this year.

With ten minutes left, finally you came! I saw you pass by but you didn't fall in line. You didn't even look at my bright lights. A fistful of emotions went through me, and my bright lights dimmed.

Three minutes passed and you came back, and my lights brightened again! But when I took a closer look at you, you were on your phone with a serious and uninterested face.

Before I could think about anything else, I saw your brother pull you towards the now short line and tell you to ride again just like the old days. But you said you didn't want to, and my heart stopped. After an argument with your brother, you went on anyways, but I could tell you were only forced to.

I focused my eyes on you. You sat on the same spot where you always did, on one hand you were holding on to the rod while on the other was your phone. You were even letting go of the rod every now and then just to get a tighter grip of your phone, I was thinking about your safety while you were thinking about something else.

You looked like you didn't care at all, you weren't the same happy person you were five years ago that used to hold on tight to the rod with both your hands with a tight grip. I guess time does change a person, and it changed you a lot.

As the carnival closed, I felt sadness run through me. At the end of the day, you walked home with your brother and got a good night's sleep. I stayed still in the dark, unlit, waiting for you and your happy and energetic arrival. Just like how you were before.

Literary: You

I didn't really like you the first time we met. I only saw you as a random person. A random person who was friends with my coach. We were at training back then, and if I remember correctly, you were having a fling with one of my teammates. I didn’t even bother to look at you.

The second time we met, it was a competition day. It was the Grand Prix Leg 3. My coach introduced us to each other. We didn't talk to each other at all and we only made eye contact once.

July 7, 2019 1:37 pm - I wasn't feeling good because of my performance, that you also saw earlier that day. I reacted to your Instagram story. You replied and soon enough, we started to talk and have long conversations frequently. Chatting with you was never a bore. It felt like every hour that passed turned into minutes or even seconds. It would be hard to back-read messages from the previous night because we talked about so many random things. You gave big hints that you liked me; not to brag, but it was pretty obvious. You kept on deleting messages that obviously had meanings behind them, otherwise, you wouldn't have deleted them. I could’ve been wrong about that, but it went on for days. Take note, I didn't have feelings for you then. But there was something about you that made my heart flutter once again. After a few days, you clarified that you ended your “fling” with my friend. You said you didn’t really feel anything towards her and you didn’t want her to assume that you guys were a thing. I got a bit mad because you gave her hope and you also gave her hints. You gave her your number and you had video calls late at night. Then after a few weeks, you admitted that you didn’t have feelings for her. I took note of what you did to my friend, I kept thinking that you would do the same thing to me. I tried to stop myself but there was something about your words. The way you express your words were different, it was like I’ve never seen or heard anyone say those kinds of words to me.

July 21, 2019 12:01 pm - I realized that I had to say it. You asked me what we were the night before, and I answered your question today. I admitted that I had feelings for you. Call me a flirt, I don't care. After that, every day was the same but I was happier. We were happier. We got to meet, train together, and go places a few times. My parents know you and your parents know me. You surprised me a few times, like that time when you went to the swim team’s Christmas party and the Philippine National Open competition. We created happy memories together.

Everyday was the same, we got to train more frequently together and all that. Not much has happened since then but suddenly, all of that changed.

December 17, 2019 around 9 pm - I talked to two of my best friends and my sister. I told them that I felt like I was drifting away from you. Far away. I had a dream that I was with another guy and my parents also liked him the way they like you. I felt my heart turn cold towards you; every time you said anything sweet, I didn’t feel a thing. We fought a few days after my heart changed but I didn't feel any pain. I usually did when we fought, but this time, I didn't.

Whenever we may meet, I hope my feelings will go back to the way they were. See you soon.
