Literary: Growing Pains

Reminiscing
Then, I never ran out of friendly faces
Of helping hands in dark places
Familiar words from familiar voices
Guidance when I’m out of choices

Longing
Now, I long for the comforts of my old bed
A distant memory inside my head
I wish to turn back time instead
to go back and revisit the life I led

Aching
But my bones have stretched and grown
My body, larger than the clothes I’ve known
My muscles ache, they’re tough like stone
But this pain, I deal with all alone

Changing
Starkly different a couple years back
Endless laughter, never have I lacked
Prepared for knees to bruise and bones to crack
My vision seemingly darkened, completely turned black

Adapting
I can no longer turn my back and flee
For the future awaits, though I failed to foresee
The path I’m headed, full of uncertainty
I've decided… I'll continue my journey with nothing but glee

Hoping
I hope I won’t run out of friendly faces
Of helping hands in dark places
Familiar words from familiar voices
Guidance when I’m out of choices

Literary (Submission): Nikki VS The Mountain of Reqs

Nikki looked up and sighed.

Nikki just arrived at her next station: The Mountain of Reqs. She’s been up and about since 2am for her journey. If she could, she’d rather just be in bed with her head on a fluffy pillow as she drifts off dreaming about better days. But she couldn’t. She has to get around this mountain if she wants to reach her final destination.

Tired and lacking sleep, Nikki started her hike up.

Nikki’s journey up first started with the English valley. This is her favorite part of the trip, because it’s relatively the safest part of the mountain. It’s easy enough to pass through as long as you pay attention and use your mind and resources creatively.

Next, she faces the enormous Social Studies jungle. This part of the mountain is a bit harder because it’s so easy to get lost in all its size and coverage! Nikki drew her breath, trying to make sense of all the trees and vines before her. In a place like this, memory is Nikki’s best friend. Before the trip, Nikki had memorized the jungle part of the map. She’d also read about all the types of things that she can encounter there. After realizing which direction is which, Nikki started to navigate the jungle, making the most out of what she remembers.

After the long walk, Nikki is finally on top of the mountain! But there’s no time for celebration just yet. She still has a long way to go, only this time going down.

Pressed for time as the night draws nearer, Nikki started to sprint. Her pace gets faster and faster with every step she makes. Because of this, while traversing the Mathematics shoulder, Nikki made a misstep, a big one at that.

Nikki tripped, stumbled, and fell all the way down the saddle of the mountain. It was a hard fall. Nikki thought she couldn’t recover.

But Nikki is a fighter. Nikki stood up, with all her bruises and scratches, and dusted herself off. And then, on and on she went until the end.

Success! Achievement unlocked. Nikki made it past the Mountain of Reqs tonight. Will she make it through tomorrow’s?

Literary (Submission): Tick Tock

Fate is a funny thing.

Out of the infinitely many ways you could’ve been born to the infinitely many parents that could have had you, this very specific version of you is the one that came out into and survived in this world.

There were infinitely many things that could’ve happened in your life. Just turning on the wrong road at the wrong time could have drastically changed your life. Or ended it.

But no. You’re still here! And you’re still you.

There are infinitely many things you could do after reading this. You can be whoever you want to be and do whatever you want.

However, although there are infinitely many things that you could do or you could be, there is one thing that you can’t be.

Immortal.

We are only mortals living in a world of limitless and infinite possibilities for a finite amount of time.

So, after you read this, you could do one of infinitely many things which may result into one of infinitely many outcomes. But remember to choose wisely, for the clock is ticking.

Tick.
Tock.
Tick.

Literary (Submission): Remnants of A Star

Light
after light
after light.

All the stars
line up
And then slowly,
slowly,
start to go around in circles,
frantically,
excitedly,
orbiting around you.

They move closer,
and closer,
and closer.
And the closer that they get,
the stronger your pull becomes.

You pull them in,
one by one,
slowly,
surely.

All these stars,
these lights,
all about you
make you look as if you
glow,
a bright yellow light,
full of warmth,
full of life.

It takes a second look,
or maybe much,
much more than that,
to see
to really see
what you actually are.

You see,
my dear,
you are not a star.

You are
but a void.

Empty
of life.
Devoid of any real feeling.

Yet you crave,
And you lust,
for the brightness
and the warmth
Of the everglowing light.

And so you pull them in,
One by one,
slowly,
surely.

All these stars,
these lights
all about you,
make you look as if you
glow.

It keeps
your vacuum of darkness,
unspoken of.
Your hollowness,
unknown.

And so,
you keep
on pulling
all of them in
one by one
to use their light,
and make it look like your own.

Yet,
my dear,
this still does not
make you a star.
You are not a star.

No,
you no longer are.

Literary (Submission): 5WH (from Wife to Husband)

Who are you when I’m not around?
What are you up to from dusk ‘til dawn?
Where are you when you’re nowhere to be found?
When are you going to stop from being gone?
Why can’t we just reach a common ground?
How can we fix this for our little son?

Literary (Submission): What I Want to Be

A mansion lined with diamonds
Floors made of gold
Filled with wonders, every room
Is this paradise?

The ocean with roaring waves
Salty breeze
Sand beneath my feet
Is this paradise?

A long and tiring hike
Reaching the summit
Claiming your victory
Is this paradise?

An oasis with flowing water
Death of thirst
Cool water in this heat
Is this paradise?

Silences, full of meaning
Exchanging looks, full of bliss
Thinking of what I could’ve been and what I could be.
Is this paradise?

Sincere smiles and hearty laughter
Remembering the little things
Knowing deep down that I am happy and I am free
This is paradise.

Literary: Mirror, Mirror

You open your eyes. What do you see?

You’re not that sure.

You start to squint them. Rub even.

The image doesn’t change.

You see a smile. It’s so familiar.

But it somehow looks real different.

It looks much wiser. But it’s not just that.

It looks happy with a secret.

The lips start to move. You try to listen.

“It gets better” is all that she said.

You drop your jaw. Furrow your eyebrows.

Confusion starts to fill your head.

Not a trace of it shows, no, not on the mirror before you,

With her shining eyes and wide smile.

As always, your day turns somber and bland

Yet the smile never leaves your head.

Literary: Life by Design

Here’s the truth: I’ve long planned my life.

I’ve already planned what I’ll do and where I’ll go. I aimed high and I knew exactly what to do to reach these, years and years before you met me.

I always knew what to say, what to do, how to behave. Always the right words, the right clothes, the
right people, the right places.

I’ve thought of possible hindrances, possible deviations from my plans. I knew how to solve these.

I plan ahead. That’s what I was good at.

Or at least that’s what I thought.

Life was going well according to plan. Then suddenly, you.

I never saw you coming. I wasn’t quite prepared.

And that scared me.

You were unlike everything I’ve ever known. No plans or sets of rules can define nor confine you, and there was nothing I hated more than a puzzle left unsolved, a person I can’t pin down.

I tried to pull you in, I tried to push you out. Still, I didn’t know what to do with you.

As I write this, I can say I finally have this figured out. I finally have you figured out.

My attempts at intricate planning will never work when it comes to you. Why? Because there is no need for such. There never was.

You always had been meant for me. You are here by a much greater design. And now that I know this, now that I let fate decide, everything finally starts to fall into place.

Literary: Almost Morning

It is almost morning.

Before the sunrise, I must forget the troubles of this day.

I must bury the memory of silent stares and shattered glass of the afternoon.

I must forgive all the pain and confusion that filled our night.

To start anew is what I have to do.

Breathe in, breathe out.

“You can do this. You have to,” I whisper quietly to myself.

As the sunlight starts to seep through the curtains, I wipe away the last of our yesterday’s
tears.

And with this, I turn and catch myself watching you as you sleep by my side. I let out a
sigh and smile.

“I can do this. I want to.”

Breathe in, breathe out.

I reach my hand out to touch yours.

Breathe in, breathe out.

“Good morning, love.”

Literary (Submission): Letter for You x Reply for You

Letter for You

My dear,
Apologies are in order, I believe, so I am going to start this letter with one.
I am truly sorry for everything I’ve done, but more importantly, everything I’ve failed to do.
I used to watch you closely, the same way you used to watch me, and I know for a fact that something has changed. There was this certain look in your eyes: caring, hopeful, dreamy even.
But that’s over now. Nowadays, you shy away every time my eyes meet yours, and for this, I can’t blame you.
I failed to be what you wanted me to be. That is the truth: I failed you, and I failed myself by failing you.
I don’t think I can apologize enough so I dare not ask for forgiveness. In fact, the reason I am writing to you is to express my gratitude.
What you have done for me before will never be forgotten. I was trying to keep myself together, but with your touch so warm and words so tender, I not only became whole but more importantly, happier.
You gave me hope. You gave me something to look forward to. And I know you know that.
I also know that you know what’s been happening to me. How does it feel to be watching something that you’ve built with your own hands starting to crumble right before your very eyes?
Nowadays, despite my numerous shortcomings, you continue to be kind and gentle. Why? I don’t know. But I’m grateful for it.
Before I end this letter, I just want to tell you not to worry about me. You’ve already done so much for me. If I got to rebuild myself the last time, I can do it once more.
I wish you well. May the rest of your days be filled with all the joy and love you deserve.
Sincerely,
Ivy

Reply for You

To my dearest,
I’ve been strong for almost four years to ensure that I would be enough for someone like you. You were my sun, and I was your moon. I’ve gained light and strength because of you.
I was once weak, but in order to give what you truly deserve, I did my best to gain strength to love someone like you. I know you were not perfect, and so am I, and that made me realize we were for each other because our strengths and weaknesses complement each other.
You were my gift; you were the reason why I wanted to learn because I wanted to show you the best version of myself.
But I guess those efforts were not enough.
Eventually, the challenges we once endured slowly broke us into pieces. Smiles turned into tears, happiness turned into sorrow, and they slowly broke us apart.
It’s hard to see what we once built with love, is slowly falling and failing. You chose her, and I am sorry because I wasn’t enough for you to stay.
Yes, you were my sun; I became too dependent on you. Your light became my foundation, and now that it’s gone, I am slowly breaking into pieces.
Don’t bother me, I’ve grown, I learned to stand on my own and not depend my happiness to my environment and surroundings. I’ve learned to be firm on my decisions and face its consequences..
You don’t need to ask for forgiveness because I have already forgiven you, because I needed to free myself from pain.
I continued showing love and care because you still have a place in my heart that no one can replace. You will always be my first and greatest love.
Thank you for giving me the light, passion, and love.
Continue growing on your own.
Sincerely yours,
Misteryosang Lakambini
