Literary (Submission): All That Matters

2/13/2014 08:32:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

She. She gives me my happiness. She takes it away, too. Her smile. Her smile is the cool breeze during a hot day. It's refreshing. Her laugh. Damn it. Her laugh makes me go crazy even just thinking about it.

Her antics are my favorite, though. You'd think she was just that quiet girl who kept to herself. In some ways, she is, but mostly she's that girl whom everyone loves. Her bubbly, innocent character makes guys go crazy. She can wrap anyone around her pinky just by being her cute self. She already has me wrapped around her finger, if you think about it.

The problem is exactly that. She can wrap any guy around her pinky and she already has. Many of them. We're all fighting a battle, one to a hundred (not really but that's what it feels like). It's darn frustrating to think that I will never be the only guy after her.

She seems to be unfazed by all the attention she receives. I guess that's what's so awesome about her. She doesn't take advantage of the fact that she can make us fall at her feet. She's almost perfect. Like, 99.9%

She is like the sunrise. Something I wish I could always see, but I miss it by a few hours. Minutes. Seconds. The way she makes my day with simple gestures is incredible. She is my drug. She is my elation. And I know that somehow, I am something to her and I won't let her be the one that got away, the one that I let go.

I don't want to be her cure because a cure isn't what she needs. All she really needs is a pain reliever to take away the heartbreak she didn't deserve. I want to give her the love she deserves, not the love she thinks she deserves. I want her love, too. To be frank, I need it.

She doesn't seem to notice what she does to me even though everyone else does. It pains me. Yet at the same time I sport a smile so wide I look like the Joker. (I don't know why I'm so serious [about her], but I am.) She makes my knees go weak, as if the flesh and bones had been replaced by jelly.

Ah, jelly. Another thing she makes me feel. It makes me burn with jealousy when I see her spending time with other guys, but it's not as if I can keep her from them. I made a big mistake by getting out of the line and came back to see that people have skipped in line. It leaves me waiting at the back all over again.

And honestly, I'm fine with that. As long as she's happy, I think I can be happy, too.

They say that when you fall in love, the feelings should be mutual. If the person does not like you back, you should stop liking them. But I can't seem to do that with her.

Because, in the end, all I really know is that I love her. And that's all that matters. / by Franz Candido

When he asks me when his doctor’s appointment is or when his sister’s birthday celebration is or other “when questions”, I give him the answers he’s looking for: “On Saturday at 10 in the morning.” or “On the 11th of September. Be at your parents’ house at 5 so you won’t be late for the surprise.”

He smiles every time I answer, not only because he’s grateful I save him from being reprimanded for forgetting when something will happen but also because he finds my “talent” of knowing and remembering anything related to time amusing (and he not-so-secretly looks up to me for it).

When I ask him when he’ll visit his parents or when he wants to drop by the bookstore he loves or other “when questions”, he gives me the answers I’m looking for: “When you’re sister comes over to give you company.” or “When you’re favorite drama’s not showing on television. Tomorrow night?”

I smile every time he answers, not only because I am grateful he always seems to take me into consideration but also because despite his replies being in exact dates and uncertain times, he never fails me (and I not-so-secretly appreciate him for it).

-----

We were sitting closely together on the couch I got from my mother, watching my favorite drama on TV, when he asked me a question.

“When did you fall in love with me?”

“I first saw you at what’s-her-name’s party on the 7th of November three years back and I’ve had a crush on you since then,” I replied, keeping my eyes on the television. “We started hanging out two months and five days after but I’m sure I fell in love with you six months and sixteen days later.”

You stared at me with a smile on your lips. “So, May-?”

“No,” I giggled. “July 28, 2012.”

“Oh.”

I smiled. “When did you fall in love with me?”

You took a deep breath. “I can’t answer you how you answered me. I’m not sure if I fell in love with you the same time as you fell in love with me or earlier or much later than that.”

I muted the television and turned to look at you.

You smiled. “But, I’m sure I had a crush on you months before we were introduced to each other. I thought about you way more than I should have right after you said 'hi' to me days after what’s-her-name’s party. I liked you even more weeks after we started hanging out, in between the hours we’d chat and the minutes we’d text. I couldn’t get you off of my mind days before our first date, more so weeks after our first kiss, and even more so years after the day I found out you had a crush on me too.

“And in one of those days occupied by my uncertain timeline, I fell in love with you.”

-----

A few moments of silence passed. “How long do you think you’ll love me?”

“Until I’m a hundred, which is about eighty years from now. How long do you think you’ll love me?”

“To infinity and beyond; forever and ever, babe.”

I smiled when I heard your answer, not only because I found it adorable how you quoted two of your favorite films or how I found your answers to be sweet but also because you never fail me.

So when you said that you’ll love me forever and ever; to infinity and beyond, I believed. / by Mary Jane

NSTP students reach out to nearby public schools

2/06/2014 07:48:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

For the second consecutive year, the UPIS National Service Training Program (NSTP) has teamed up with the UP College of Education to help promote literacy appreciation to students of public schools near Diliman.

The class, divided into am and pm sessions, visits the San Vicente High School and the Balara Elementary School respectively every Monday.

NSTP students started their field work last January 13. They assist and teach Grade 2 students who are struggling with their literary skills in order to make reading more fun and entertaining for the children.

They also help develop the students’ communication skills by conducting various activities such as magic shows and molding clay.

The program will end on the first week of March 2014. / reports from L. Perez, J. Aberin, K. Cayron, K. De Guzman, V. Villanueva

Computers at the UPIS Library finally get an upgrade.

Fifteen new Apple iMac units and a faster internet connection were recently installed for the use of students and faculty members.

The upgrades are part of the UP Administrator’s eUP project which, according to their site, aims to "make a fully connected and integrated UP Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system to support and improve academic and operational excellence".

The project will enable the University, including UPIS, to improve its operational efficiency and to better cater to the needs of its stakeholders. This is one of the major projects of the Office of the Vice President for Development (OVPD) toward UP President Alfredo Pascual’s goals for the university. / with reports from B. Bagnes, K.
