Literary (Submission): Kailan Pa*

"Kung ‘di ngayon kailan pa, bukas o makalawa..."

Disyembre.

Napakabagal mo talaga kahit kelan.

Huling Powerdance na. Huling UPIS Week. Huling Christmas Party.

“Ano ‘to?” pagtataray ko.

“Buksan mo.”

Ano ba!"

Okay. Hay. Ewan ko sa’yo. Bakit ba napakatorpe mo?

----

"Di niya malalaman, di mahuhulaan damdamin mo…"

Marso.

Ang slow mo.

Last week na ng klase. Last day na ng pagbebenta ng dry goods. Last day na para magtalumpati.

Nung first class production. Nung first sem.

Graduation Ball.

Last song.

Literary (Submission): Twelve Hours

6:40AM

I tried my best to go to school as early as possible (which I do not usually do), hoping that I would get a chance to walk you to your first period class. You’re usually at school by 6:45, but this time you arrived earlier.

As I entered the gate, I caught a glimpse of your pretty face. You’re standing near the stairs and looked like you were waiting for someone. My heart skipped a beat. I smiled without reason and walked as fast as I could. I told myself, “This could be the chance I’m waiting for.”

But he got there before me. He approached you and offered to help you with your things. You gave him a bright smile, nodded, and handed him your backpack. You turned and walked away, talking and laughing.

I know he’s your best friend, nothing to worry about. But even if you don’t seem to know, I know, and everyone knows that he likes you more than that.

10:30AM

My friends and I rushed to our Social Studies class on the 3rd floor. I know your next class is on the same floor, so I walked slowly. I deliberately wanted to be left behind so I can sneak a glace as I pass by your classroom.

You were seated beside him on the last row near the windows. You were attentively listening to the Algebra lesson. I didn’t expect you to look my way.

But maybe fate still has something for me. You looked towards the door and our eyes met. You smiled and gave a little wave. The butterflies in my stomach went wild. My world stood still. Those sparkling eyes, that gorgeous smile... this must be a dream.

I waved back. Maybe you didn’t see me wave anymore for you turned around and faced him. You talked to each other like best friends usually do. I looked away and ran towards my classmates. Nothing to worry about. I know that you’re just friends.

12:00NN

It was time for lunch. I went to the canteen. We took our seats and started to eat and chat. I didn’t expect to see you, but there you are. You were with your friends and he was there with you.

As you walked past us, I heard you say that you’re starving. I thought of giving you my extra snack but when I reached for my bag under the table, I heard him say, “Get what you want, my treat.”

I heard you thank him and saw you give him a quick hug. Your friends started teasing you. You blushed and moved away from him. I turned away, tried to ignore things, and gave my attention to my lunch and my friends.

4:30PM

The last class has finally ended. Table Tennis training doesn’t start for another hour. I walked down the ramp to meet my team mates and unexpectedly saw you there. You were with him again. This time, you were both surrounded by his basketball teammates.

I’m hearing big voices. They were loudly laughing and teasing the two of you. I tried to ignore you but maybe it can’t be helped. I still snuck a glance at you.

Your face was really red and you were laughing hard. You look really happy. And really cute. You stood up, bid him good luck for his training, and left.

6:00PM

I was leaving after training when I saw you seated on the wooden benches near the stairs. You were alone, just playing with your iPhone. Maybe fate was really tempting me. Could this be the chance that I was waiting for? Or could this be just another thing to open my eyes to reality?

So I decided to grab this opportunity. I walked towards you, tapped your shoulder and smiled at you. Your eyes lit up, you smiled back, and stood up. You gave me a quick hug and asked me to sit beside you.

Everything was awkward and quiet. All I can hear was the wind and the crickets chirping. I tried to think of a way to start a conversation but I was terribly tongue tied. I don’t know what to say. Maybe this is the time to tell you how much I like you.

I was about to start talking when your phone rang. It was your dad. He probably told you to hurry up for after that phone call, you stood up, picked up your stuff, and mumbled an apology and a quick goodbye.

6:10PM
I walked home alone. I remembered how today started and ended. Realizations hit me hard. This is too much for one day.

A part of me tells me to stop what I’m doing, another tells me to continue. I really love you, but this day made me realize, “Is my love for you enough for you to love me too?” What if we aren’t really made for each other? Will I still have other chances or would they slip away like what happened? I’m too tired to think.

Maybe tomorrow has something in store for me. Or the day after tomorrow, who knows when? I’ll do everything that I can to win your heart. This is not the end, it’s just the beginning. I love you, and that’s what I hold on to.

Literary (Submission): Take Your Time

Never fall in love when it’s 2am.

Never fall in love with the 2am thoughts he tweets when it’s half past 12 in the evening.

Never share the things he shares on Facebook when the morning has barely begun.

Never like the pages he likes at 3:45 in the afternoon just because you think he’ll like you back if you do.

Never reblog the photo set he uploads when he’s killing time on Tumblr, as if those photos would ever be of you.

Never listen to the bands he listens to on Spotify when it’s time to study, for you will hear the lyrics flow and think of him.

Never add views to the links from Youtube he sends to you at 6:25 at night, when you are supposed to be watching tutorials instead.

Never “heart” his photos Instagram when he posts at 8 at night, as if he would ever heart yours

Never wait for the ping from Viber when he said he was going to eat dinner an hour before and it’s already 10 in the evening.

Never vote for his favorite artist on MTV before the clock strikes twelve, as if he would ever choose you.

Never ever fall in love when it’s 2am because this cycle starts over and over again and you find yourself swimming in the spare minutes he does not have.

Literary (Submission): Minsan

Minsan, hindi mo alam
Nasa harap mo na pala
Pero lumingon ka pa sa iba
Kasi may biglang tumawag sa pangalan mo

Minsan, hindi mo alam
Nasa tabi mo na pala
Pero umalis ka
Kasi ihing ihi ka na

Minsan, hindi mo lang alam
Kasunod mo lang pala
Pero lumiko ka
Kasi dumaan ka pa sa kaibigan mo

Minsan, hindi mo lang alam
Dumaan na pala
Pero di mo nakita
Kasi abala ka sa pagbabasa

Minsan, hindi mo alam
Siya na pala
Pero di mo pinansin
Kasi hindi mo pa siya kilala

Minsan, hindi mo talaga alam
Pero…
Kasi…
Baka wala ka lang talagang pakialam

Literary: Second Chances

I remember how fast you were going
As I was waiting by the corner,
Waiting for you on a rainy afternoon,
With only your footsteps to be heard.

I remember how you were standing still
Getting drenched as the rain poured down
You were waiting for someone,
Was it me?

I counted your steps, one by one,
The pitter patter of rain sounding like the ticking of my watch
I watched as the pitter patter turned to large drops, the way ticks became tocks
And finally you were there

I walked slowly towards that corner where you were
Ignoring the large raindrops falling on my back.
All that matters is now, I’ve got a chance
To make up for the time I wasted in the past

Twenty minutes a bit too late,
I was ready to walk away in the rain
But as I was closing my umbrella
You put yours above my head.

Just in time, I reached you with my umbrella
You stopped, turned, and our eyes met.
We stared at each other for almost an eternity
With no one even bothering to say a single word

I didn’t mind anymore that you were late
I lay my head on your shoulder and sighed,
The smell of rain and your scent enveloping me.
Words would never be enough to describe our love.

We held each other in a very warm embrace
As I felt your heart beating through my shirt I remembered
How in the world did it once cross my mind
To break this lovely woman’s precious heart?

Words running thin, eyes running dry,
Walking away, coming back, making time,
We made our own history, my dear,
One time frame was never enough for us.

We walked together, towards a future full of love
Leaving behind a past full of sorrow and regret
Our own history, indeed, is what we wrote down
Our own fairy tale, which we will never, ever forget

Perpekto
Lahat ay naaayon sa aking plano
Klaro
Walang makikihalo, mukhang magtatagal, walang halong biro

Close pala tayo noon?

Mabilis man ang takbo ng oras
Umaasa akong ito’y wala nang wakas.

Alas singko ng umaga,
Ikaw ang gustong makausap
Agad kong bubuksan ang telepono
At makikita ang “Good morning” text mo

Alas sais ng umaga, papasok sa eskwela
Magpupustahan kung sinong mauuna
Gugulatin pa kung sinong mahuli
At sabay pang kakain pamuli

Alas dose ng tanghali,
Magkikita sa kantina
Ililibre mo pa ko ng tanghalian
Kasama pa natin ang buong barkadahan

Sa loob ng anim na buwan,
Araw-araw tayong ganiyan
Martes hanggang Biyernes,
Minsan kasama pa ang Sabado at Lunes.

Pero anong nangyari?
Hanggang anim na buwan lang ba
Ang saya at kilig natin?
Bakit tila nabaliktad ang lahat ng dati?

Alas singko ng umaga,
Ikaw ang gustong makausap,
Agad kong bubuksan ang telepono,
At magpapadala ng “Good morning” text sa’yo

Alas sais ng umaga, papasok sa eskwela
Ako na ang laging nauuna
Sa ramp, hinihintay kita
Habang mag-isang kakain ng almusal

Alas dose ng tanghali,
Hihintayin ka sa kantina
Nakahanda na ang tanghalian mo
Pero nakakain ka na pala

Literary: The Clock Tower

Once again I find myself at the solitary clock tower on the cliff overlooking the seashore, the stars and the full moon being my only companions this night. Outside, I see that the Aurora is beginning, sending dancing flashes of color across the lonely landscape. While staring at this majestic display, I feel at peace listening to the celestial music only the night sky’s silence can provide.

Looking back, I see the tower just as it announces midnight, with tolling bells sending a mournful wail that echoes through the trees. For once, I am satisfied in being alone, I realize that it is the only thing that gives me freedom. True freedom, free from the binding shackles of society, its uncouth hustle and bustle. Once again I return my sight to the masquerade unfolding above as through each flash of light, the constellations come to life, I see Orion’s hunt still continuing, the Gemini and the Virgo dancing upon a meadows of starlight. But as the northern lights fade, so does my vision slowly disappear. The tower announces the first hour of the morning, I look at it, and decide that the moon shall be the only clock I shall even need.

Literary (Submission): Time and You

Time is the future, the present, the past
Time is an opportunity, a moment, an occasion
Time can be slow, can be fast
Time can hurt, can heal

But is this what time really is?
Is this all that time can be?
No, I think what time really is
Stays a mystery

Time is something you can’t touch but is of value
Something you’d be lucky to have
Just like love
Just like you

Just like time, just like love
I am lucky to have you
But we both know that just like love,
Time is not perfect

The best time is when you are in my embrace
When you can hear my heart race
The worst time is being miles and miles away
With no contact at any time of the day

If I could, I would be with you all the time
Because time wasted with you is no longer wasted time
Letting time pass with your hand on my chest
To lay down with you all in a day’s rest

So we need to see the importance of time
We must be careful to spend its every bit
Because time is not forever in our hands
Just like love can suddenly be banned

Time is not perfect.
We will soon run out of it, too
But my heart will never run out of love for you.
