Bornilla takes home bronze in IESO 2017



UPIS Grade 12 student Adrian Bornilla won bronze in the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) held last August 21-30 in Nice, France.

The annual IESO tests its participants’ skills in all major areas of earth sciences such as geology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, and astronomy. The tests consisted of two written exams that focused on the said areas, as well as four practical exams that required them to do lab tests and field work.

Bornilla ranked among the top 30% of 120 students from the 29 participating countries, resulting in a bronze medal finish.

Three other students from Philippine Science High School, namely Mikhail Torio from the Main Campus, Eugene Toribio from the Bicol Campus, and Janine Juachon from the Central Luzon Campus were sent with Bornilla to represent the Philippines.

There were other activities prepared by the IESO such as the International Team Field Investigation (ITFI) and the Earth Science Project (ESP). Each activity required members of the Philippine team to collaborate with students from other countries, emphasizing IESO’s objective to foster camaraderie among the students.

Competing individually, they bagged multiple awards namely 2 silvers and 2 bronzes from the main event, 1 gold and 1 silver from the ITFI, and 1 gold from the ESP. Of the medals, Bornilla won the gold for his participation in the ITFI.

“Ang IESO ay isang unique and humbling experience kasi it’s been so long since the Philippines last participated in the competition,” Bornilla shared. “Sobrang competitive nung atmosphere yet sobrang fun kasi we were able to meet different students from different cultures.”

The Philippine team was trained by members of the International Geoscience Education Organization namely Prof. Miguel C. Cano and Dr. Marietta De Leon.

Batch 2018 holds e-waste campaigns and collection



Grade 11 students from the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) recently launched school-wide electronic waste campaigns.

Aside from spreading awareness among students, faculty, and staff on the dangers and proper handling of e-waste, the campaigns also aim to collect e-waste that will then be sent to a licensed e-waste recycling facility. The project was launched in cooperation with UP Circuit as a major requirement in Science 11.

11-GL Jaena’s E-Ways over E-Waste involved room-to-room campaigns at the Grades 7-12 building to inform students about e-waste and to introduce their Beemo-inspired deposit boxes where students can deposit their own e-waste.

Meanwhile, Grades 3-6 welcomed 11 – F Del Mundo’s Save the Motherboard which involves superheroes Rihanna Reuse, Richard Reduce, and Rachel Recycle. The campaign has two main activities, the Cleanest Homeroom Challenge: E-waste Edition and the Launchpad, an exhibit that aims to give basic information on e-waste.

11 – CF Calderon’s campaign at K-2 dubbed Super E-roes also included room-to-room activities where they taught a song-and-dance number. Aside from this, they also facilitated an educational game on proper e-waste disposal.

News: UPIS, nakamit ang ikalawang gantimpala sa DAGITAB


Nakuha ng University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) ang ikalawang gantimpala sa DAGITAB, isang Electronics Workshop and Contest, noong ika-18 ng Pebrero sa Computational Science Research Center (CRSC).

Nagwagi ng ikalawang gantimpala sa paligsahan sina Julianne Sasing ng Grado 8, at Christian Sarabia ng Grado 9. Pitong puntos ang lamang sa kanila ng kampeon mula sa Philippine Science High School habang nakamit naman ng Manila Science High School ang ikatlong puwesto.

“Masaya siya, marami akong natutunan kasi parang it was more of a learning experience rather than a competition. Naramdaman ko na although focused kami sa pagkuha ng points, mas focused pa rin kami sa kung anong pinapagawa sa amin,” pagbabahagi ni Julianne Sasing ukol sa kaniyang karanasan sa patimpalak.

Lumahok din sa nasabing paligsahan si Marius Barcenas na kinatawan ng isa sa mga team na ipinadala ng UPIS. Sina G. Raffy Ibanez at Prop. Regina Taduran ang tumayong tagapayo ng mga kalahok na estudyante.

Ang DAGITAB ay isang patimpalak ng UP Engineering Radio Guild (UP ERG) na nilalayong mahasa ang interes sa Electronics at Engineering ng mga estudyante. UPIS commemorates World Science Day thru integrated exhibits

Exhibits replicating science centers were constructed by the UPIS Department of Science last November 11, 2016 at the UPIS 3-6 and 7-12 buildings to celebrate the World Science Day for Peace and Development.

The exhibits showcased projects, experiments, and demonstrations accomplished by students in their previous science classes.

Exhibits at the 3-6 building focused on General Science while those at the 7-12 campus featured science subject matters in high school, namely, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Science, Technology, Society, and Environment (STSE). Each aimed to serve as an integration of the science curriculum in all grade levels.

The faculty and student teachers of the department prepared and curated the exhibits.
Meanwhile, students visited the displays during science period.

The World Science Day for Peace and Development has been celebrated annually on November 10 since it was proclaimed in 2001 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Sci Dept. muling idinaos ang BEST



Muling isinagawa ng University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Science Department ang programang Building Excellence in Science Teaching (BEST) noong Setyembre 17 at 24 sa gusali ng UPIS 7-12.

Inilunsad noong 2009, ang BEST ay isang extension program ng Science Department kung saan sinasanay ang mga guro mula sa iba’t ibang paaralan. Nilalayon nitong mahasa ang kanilang mga estratehiya sa pagtuturo at mapalalim ang kanilang kaalaman sa iba’t ibang paksa sa Agham. Ngayong taon, nakatuon ang nabanggit na programa sa temang Energy in Focus III.

Ang naturang gawain ay dinaluhan ng 40 guro sa elementarya at sekundarya mula sa 11 paaralan sa iba’t ibang probinsya tulad ng Bulacan, Olangapo at La Union.

Ito na ang ikatlong BEST kung saan katuwang ng paaralan ang Phinma Energy Corp., isang kumpanyang nakapokus sa oil and gas exploration at power generation.

UPIS, 1st runner up sa Caduceus Cup

Nakamit ng UPIS team A ang 1st runner up sa ginanap na Caduceus Cup 2014 noong Nobyembre 22 sa Palma Hall.

Nakakuha ng 84 puntos ang UPIS team A na binubuo nina Marco Barrientos (10-Acacia), Michael Basilio (10-Lauan), at JC Berja (10-Molave). Kinulang lamang sila ng 14 puntos laban sa kampeon na Chiang Kai Shek na may iskor na 98. Pumangatlo naman ang Xavier School team A na nakakuha ng 75 puntos.

UPIS 3-6 places second in PSO Finals

The UPIS 3-6 team of Jarod de Luna, Henry Marquez, and Bertrand Diola won 2nd place in the Philippine Science Olympiad finals last September 30 held at the Ateneo de Manila University.

On the other hand, Mariel de Luna, Zena del Mundo, and Christine Prieto placed 9th in the high school division.

The competition was a quiz bee composed of questions regarding Information Technology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Science.

From 300 competing schools in the elimination round, the pool was narrowed down to 20 schools in the semi-finals. From the 20 schools chosen, 10 qualified for the finals. ● by Sandy De La Paz, Rya Ducusin, Miguel Flores, and Hannah Garay

UPIS Grade 6 students win in MathSciAka 2012

Several UPIS elementary and high school students participated in the MathSciAka 2012 held at the PHILVOLCS auditorium in UP Diliman last September 22, 2012.

The event was divided into several categories including a series of take-home experiments, an extemporaneous speech contest for high school students, a slogan-making contest for elementary students, and an interactive workshop.

Grade 6 student Phil Bryan Cosep won first place in the take-home “Organic Battery” experiment while the his batchmates Patience Ventura, Craig Alexander Aquino, and Zeidrich Monares won third place in the interactive workshop of the elementary division.

UPIS tops PSO elims

Two UPIS teams qualified for the final round of the Philippine Science Olympiad 2012 after topping the ranks in the elimination round held last September 8 at the Angelicum College.

The Philippine Science Olympiad is organized by the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs. It is divided into Bracket I (Elementary) and Bracket II (High school).

The UPIS students who participated in Bracket I were Jarod De Luna, Henry Marquez and Bertrand Diola. Their team was able to place in the top 20 for national level and top 3 for NCR level. As for the UPIS participants in Bracket II, seniors Mariel de Luna, Zena del Mundo, and Christine Prieto were able to place in the top 20 for National level and top 2 for NCR level.

The Olympiad quiz bee is an exam taken individually by each student. The scores they got from the test were added to the scores of their group mates, and were ranked according to the total score of the students in each school.

UPIS wins RowBoatics championship

The UPIS team composed of Rafael Luis Aenlle of 9-Neon, Maragtas VII Sano Amante, and Harold Michael Prudencio of 9-Argon won 1st place in the RowBoatics competition at the UP College of Engineering last September 1.

RowBoatics is an inter-high school machine competition which challenges the students to design and build a rubber band-powered watercraft. The event is hosted by the UP Gears and Pinions, a mechanical engineering organization in celebration of their 57th year.

Each team was given only 2 hours to produce a watercraft. The organizer provided them with 4 rubber bands, a ruler, a pair of scissors, masking tape, 10 drinking straws, a long folder, a plastic folder, a marker, 2-feet of steel wire, 10 barbeque sticks, cutter, glue gun with 4 glue sticks, 2 pencils, and Styrofoam.

Aenlle, Amante, and Prudencio were declared champions after scoring 94% with their time of 1.94 seconds. SciSoc joins environmental awareness workshop

The members of the UPIS Science Society (SciSoc) attended a workshop which aims to promote environmental awareness and teach citizens the importance of water to the community.

The Lakbayan tour conducted by Manila Water and headed by Ms. Heidi de Maisip included an on-site visit to the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Compound, La Mesa Dam, and UP Sewage Treatment Plant.

They also attended a climate change seminar sponsored by the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines at the UPIS 7-10 AVR. Activities, lectures and discussions were also given to help the students be more aware of global warming. ● by Rya Ducusin, Camille Babaran, and Trizia Badong

Napanalunan ng UPIS ang ikatlong puwesto sa GeoQuiz na ginanap sa National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), UP Diliman noong Oktubre 1.

Ang GeoQuiz ay isang pautakan tungkol sa Earth Science na nahahati sa dalawang bahagi. Ang unang parte ng kompetisyon ay isang individual test na binubuo ng 60 items at ang ikalawa naman ay isang group quiz na mayroong 30 items.

82 puntos ang naiskor ng mga kinatawan ng UPIS na sina Monty Banta, Mariel de Luna, Zena del Mundo, at Jasper Valentino.

Siyam na paaralan ang kalahok sa nasabing pautakan. Nakamit ng Philippine Science High School Bicol Region ang unang gantimpala, samantalang Rizal National High School naman ang pumangalawa.

UPIS nanalo sa MathSciaKa

Napanalunan ng UPIS high school team ang pangalawang gantimpala sa ginanap na MathSciaKa sa PHIVOLCS, Diliman, Quezon City noong Setyembre 17.

Nilalayon ng nasabing kumpetisyon na makagawa ang mga kalahok na ng mga kakaibang proyekto na gawa lamang sa mga espesipikong gamit.

Nakuha ng high school team ang unang pwesto sa paggawa ng Organic Battery at Marble Roller Coaster. Ayon sa isang kalahok ng nasabing paligsahan, hindi lang labanan sa katalinuhan kung hindi sa diskarte at kaalaman sa iba’t ibang bagay ang naging labanan.

Sa kabuuan, ang Jose J. Leido Memorial High School ang nag-kampeon sa High School Division.

Nakamit naman ng UPIS sa Elementary division ang pangatlong pwesto sa isang Interactive Workshop at sa paggawa ng isang Water Filter. Hindi man nakapasok sa Top 3, naging masaya at hindi mapapantayan ang kanilang naging karanasan sa kumpetisyong ito.

Ang Center of Excellence ang nag-uwi ng unang gantimpala para sa Elementary Division.

Ginanap noong Setyembre 24 ang National Finals ng Philippine Science Olympiad (PSO) sa PHIVOLCS Auditorium, Diliman, Quezon City. Sina Tanya Amor (10 – Lauan), Ralph Valencia (10 – Acacia), at Mariel de Luna (9 – Gold) ang mga kinatawan ng UPIS.

Nagkaroon ng practical at written test sa unang round ng kumpetisyon. Nakasama ang UPIS sa top 10 at sa ikalawang bahagi, naglaban-laban sa isang quiz bee ang mga paaralan na nakapasok.

Nakamit ng UPIS ang ika-9 na puwesto. Baguio National High School ang nag-kampeon.

UPIS nagtagumpay sa INCEthink

Ginanap noong Setymebre 7, 2011 ang paligsahang INCEthink sa Engineering Theatre, Melchor Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman.

Layunin sa paligsahang ito na makagawa ang bawat koponan ng isang matibay, matatag at kaaya-ayang tulay gamit ang 100 barbeque stick at 1 rolyong nylon.

Dalawang grupo ang naging kinatawan ng UPIS sa nabanggit na kumpetisyon. Sina Audri Gabriel, Noel Lava at Monty Banta ang bumubuo sa Team A. Samantalang Team B naman sina Jasper Bongaonta, Ralph Valencia at Theeex Agapito.

Nakuha ng Grace Christian Academy ang unang gantimpala. Nakamit ng team A ang ikaapat na puwesto at ang ikalimang puwesto nama’y nakamit ng Team B. Ito ang unang pagkakataon ng UPIS na sumali sa ganitong kumpetisyon.

Unang Brain Mesh nilahukan ng UPIS

Ginanap noong Setyembre 3, 2011 ang unang Brain Mesh sa Melchor Hall, UP Diliman.

Nilahukan ito ng mga mag-aaral mula sa 15 paaralan sa Metro Manila. Sina Jasper Bongalonta ng 10-Acacia at Theeex Agapito ng 10-Narra ang mga kinatawan ng UPIS.

Nagawa nilang makalagpas sa unang bahagi ng elimination round at semis, kung saan naka-tie nila ang Manila Science Highschool sa ikatlong puwesto. Naging mahigpit ang laban sa pagitan ng dalawang paaralan. Dahilan para magkaroon ng dalawang beses na tie-breaker round. Nasagot ng Manila Science Highschool ang huling tie-breaker.

Bagama’t hindi nakapasok sa finals, masaya pa rin ang koponan dahil nagawa nilang makipagsabayan sa mga top schools.

Sa pagtatapos ng kompetisyon, nakamit ng Philippine Science Highschool ang unang puwesto habang nasa ikalawang puwesto naman ang Manila Science Higschool.

Mga batang henyo ng UPIS muling napatunayan ang galing

Naganap noong Setyembre 3 ang elimination round ng Philippine Science Olympiad (PSO) sa Angelicum College Quezon City.

Nilahukan ito ni Franz Candido, Jarod de Luna, Larkin Dumelod ng mga mag-aaral mula sa Grado 5-6 at nina Tanya Amor, Mariel de Luna at Ralph Valencia na mula naman sa Grado 9-10.

Nasubukan ang galing ng mga estudyante sa pamamagitan ng iba't ibang pagsusulit - Practical at Written na may kinalaman sa Physics, Earth Science, Chemistry, Biology at Information and Communications Technology.

Nahirapan man ang mga pambato ng UPIS, nagkaroon ito ng mabuting resulta. Sa pagtatapos ng elimination round, nakapasok ang UPIS sa top 20 schools nationwide at lalaban sa National Finals. Ang nasabing finals ay gaganapin sa Setyembre 24 sa PHILVOCS.

Rampang Pinoy muling inilunsad

Idinaos ang Rampang Pinoy sa Multi-Purpose Hall noong Huwebes, Setyembre 1. Nilahukan ito ng mga lakan at lakambini ng bawat seksyon sa bawat grado.

Samu’t saring kasuotan ang ipinakita ng mga kinatawan ng bawat seksyon na sumasalamin sa temang Wika at Kasaysayang Pilipino, Landas sa Pagsulong ng Karapatang Pantao.

Ang mga nagwagi sa nabanggit na paligasahan ay sina Jessica Cañeta at Jean Paul Mabaquiao ng 7-Jupiter, Faye de Castro at Sano Amante ng 8-Firefly, Rya Celine Ducusin at Benjomer Hernandez ng 9-Gold, at Cara Mae Bilangel at Ramon Timothy Banta ng 10-Lauan.

Ang mga kalahok sa Rampang Pinoy mula sa Grado 7-10.
Pagkatapos rumampa ng mga kalahok, nagpakita ng kagalingan ang lakan at lakambini ng Sangguniang Pangwika at Kilusang Araling Panlipunan pati na rin ang mga guro na sina Bb.
