Literary (Submission): For A Love That Stays

Like any other night before the deadline, I stare at a blank page. I type in a few words, but I still end up pressing the backspace button halfway through the whole thing. I have done this more times than I can count and it never gets easier.

During our years in MC, we wove stories mined from the depths of our hearts and revived from the back of our minds. And no matter how many stories we've told, there's always enough for another pub night.

We wrote of love, joy, pain, sadness, anger, and many other things that kept us up at night. But being the impressionable teens that we were and maybe still are, we wrote mostly about love.

Tonight, I write about a different kind of love.

The love for writing after graduation is a love that surprises you. It's not the kind of surprise that you secretly anticipate, that you know is waiting for you despite how elusive it tries to be. It's the kind of love that knows its place in your heart and so has no need for any flashy comebacks. It's the kind of love that sits comfortably in its little nook, waiting for you to call upon them. It surprises you because of how well it fits into everything despite how things have changed.

I admit that I have become rusty. Words don't come as easily as they used to. But they do come eventually! Bits and pieces from old articles and old lits come to mind and find their place in scripts and letters. Words like "rather" and "seemingly" and "plethora" are scattered around reflection papers and reports. And each time such words make an appearance, I am always amazed.

I once thought that I had to go on long voyages to find these words again, thinking that they were lost and no longer to be found. It's the same thing with my memories in Room 115. I wondered where they went and how I could even dare to forget the (almost) 24 hours and 7 days a week that I spent thinking about the magic made in that room and the people we made it with.

But as I meet friends I made in that very room after months since graduating from all that orderly chaos, I realized that some things are not meant to be found, simply because they were never lost. Memories and words come so easily when called upon and even as you write the most mundane of papers or the simplest of scripts, and as you see your writers and fellow editors in parties or along hallways, you remember the love that keeps them afloat.

And so, the love for writing never leaves because the memories and words always find ways to stay.

Thank you, MC, for a love that stays.

Love,
Ms. Takes

Literary: Thank You

We narrated history
With a canvas now full
And brushes worn from use.
Tonight, I write knowing that we are leaving
A world we brought color to.

We scribbled verses
With the wisdom of late-night musings
And early morning revelations.
Tonight, I write knowing that we have bared
A part of our souls for those who wish to see.

We told tales
With heavy hearts
And romance in our words.
Tonight, I write knowing that we welcome
A chorus of new voices to continue the legends.

We wove stories
With the fabric of old memories
And thoughts we wished we could leave behind.
Tonight, I write knowing that we now begin
A journey we cannot take together.

We leave memoirs
With pains we have revised
And joys we have learned to share.
Tonight, I write knowing that thanks are in order for
A story we could not have completed without you.

Thank you
For writing these stories with us
Through every word you have read.
Thank you
For helping us leave
This legacy.

Literary: The Ballad of Change

Once I was but a mess
A dissonance of angry melodies
With my head held high
I sang a solo piece
Of lines filled with pride

I pretended I was fine
Claiming anything I wanted mine
Until you came along:
A favorite song
I was never meant to sing

You changed me.

I had a taste of truth
So I did everything to keep you
I let myself know defeat
Familiarized myself with its beat
And wrote a song from it

To you, I sang my heart out
It was an offering,
Gratitude for what you've done:
You changed me to your only one
Until---

You changed.

You tried in all earnest to reach me
But only to reach, and never to keep me
You left and it became a habit
Though I always told you not to try it
It became a song you could not help but sing

The only thing that's constant
Is change, as people say
But I pray, that though we may change
We will always go back
To the songs we used to sing
But until then, I will wait,
Singing the only song I know now:

You.

I know that I have no right to tell you this,
Pero mahal kita.
Sa kabila ng mga pagkukulang ko,
Kakayanin kong ipagtapat sa’yo na
I love you.

My emotions have created an outline
That my words are now trying to fill
And it is a tedious process
Of going back and forth,
Urong, sulong,
Hindi malaman kung saan talaga nais pumunta
Aalis, babalik, aalis, babalik,
Hindi malaman kung ano ang tinatakasan
Hindi mawari kung mayroon pang babalikan

Pero ganyan ang pag-ibig:
It will not tell you its secrets,
But it will try its best to unearth yours.
So before it even has the chance,
I am telling you now.
I love you.
Mahal kita.

Hindi maaaring sa iisang wika lamang iparating
It is impossible to box everything into one language.
I still think of you.
Magpasalin-salin pa man
Ay iisa lang naman ang nais sabihin.
Gusto kong mabatid mo na wala namang magbabago.
I will not allow my words to get lost in translation.
I pray each promise finds its way to you

I have always worn my emotions on my sleeves
But this time, I wear them in two languages
That I love you.

Literary: I Am

She is everything I am not.

She is grace while my feet betray me.
She is compassion while my heart feels not.
She is charm while my façade breaks diamonds.
She is humility while my head does not bow.
She is trust while my hands always slip.

I am a broken soul while she is wonder magnified.
I am a wayward image while she is the gilt-edged beauty.
I am a rebel cause while she is the genuine aftermath.
I am a forgotten message while she is the flawless manifesto.

But despite the many things she is
That I am not,
One thing truly stands apart:
She is loved
By someone like you,
And I have simply learned
To love myself.

I grew up summing up the marks
On pristine, white cards,
Printed and unyielding.
My grades were auctioneers
And I deemed them adept at
Placing value on my being,
As if my merit could be bought
For so little a price
That I now know
Is barely half of who I am.

I grew up staring at figures
On flimsy, blue covers,
Encircled in red and unchanging.
My averages were traders
And I deemed them fit of
Appraising my value
As if my life could be sold
With hardly any tariff
That I now know
Was a cruel bargain for me.

I grew up counting the numbers
On loose sheets of paper,
Inked and enduring.
My scores were connoisseurs
And I deemed them capable of
Belittling my qualities
As if my features could be quantified
By a measly penalty
That I now know
Isn’t even a fraction of my worth.

I grew up thinking
That these figures
Were the things that gave me worth
But when I finally took it upon myself
To let the numbers be just numbers
I found out
That my worth
Could not
And should not
Be counted.

Odyssey

Today, we lift our anchors once more
For a journey bound for regret.
We look for a beaming horizon
Lined with chances we withheld.

Today, we are on the same ship
For a voyage I'm not sure is worth it.
We stand on the creaking floorboards
Varnished with memories that don’t seem to last.

Today, we raise the sail as one
For a quest with a course uncertain.
We pin places on the threadbare map
Tattered by promises that hold no meaning.

Today, we wage war on the currents
For an adventure we wish we saved for another.
We row against the tossing waves
Battered by conversations teeming with silence.

Tonight, we are on our way home
From an undertaking we're finally ready to let go.

Iliad

Years ago, we took our arms
For a crusade with end uncertain.
With steady hearts and hopes held high,
We took the charge and fought.

Years ago, we were on the same field
For a siege I hoped we'll last.
With you beside me and fate against,
We tried our best to hold the line.

Years ago, we raised the banners as one
For a final stand bound for defeat.
With faltering hearts and falling hopes,
We slowly fell apart.

Years ago, we waged war against our foes
For a battle better fought for another.
With prospects grim and all hope lost,
We realised there's nothing left to do.

Years ago, we went on our way home
From an undertaking we were finally ready to give up.

Literary: For Better Days

When the universe chooses
To pull the currents,
Shake the earth,
And freeze the air,
Do not think
You are invincible.
You may not
turn the currents,
Still the shaking,
Or warm the air,
But the fact that you
are still standing
Is testament enough
That to be vulnerable
Is nothing to be ashamed of.

When the world dares
To turn their back on you,
kick you to the curb,
And push you six-feet under,
Do not think
You are indomitable.
You may not
Face them with indifference,
Stand up fast enough,
Or pull yourself up with ease,
But the fact that you
Are still staring humanity in the eye
Is evidence enough
That to be alive
Is nothing you can't handle.

When life glories
At the mistakes you have made,
Shortcomings too long to make up for,
And the failure of your choices,
Do not think
You are bulletproof.
You may not
Get it right the first time.
Be enough for some,
Or make the right choices,
But the fact that you
Are still alive today
Is reason enough
To make it through tomorrow.

Literary: Ganito Ako Mahalin

Mahal kita.
Mahal mo ako.
Yun nga lang, mahal mo rin siya.
Pero ako ang pinili mo.
Kahit na alam naman nating lahat
Na mas matimbang siya sa puso mo
At minahal mo lamang ako

Alam kong hinahangad mong

Oo, mahal kita.

Nakakatawa nga naman
na ang salitang "mahal"
Ay maraming kahulugan.

Mahalaga, iniibig, isang sugal.

Mahalaga ako,
Pero siya ang iniibig mo.
Ngunit dahil ito’y isang sugal,

Ako ang pinili mo.

Ganito ako mahalin.

Literary: The Red Curtain

I appreciated you
And deemed you my muse.
Never was I good with words
So to tell my story, the stage I’ll use.

Behind red curtains, I painted you with strokes meant for a masterpiece.

I adored you
And considered you my magnum opus.
I filled my spaces with images of you
But I mistakenly brought you to life
Using colors vivid with my passion
That left me hollow
And reduced me to faded hues.

As the curtains rise, through me they see your beauty but through you I lost myself.

Tonight is not about you.
I made you art, perfection personified,
But tonight, I represent my own art.
Tonight, the lights search for me
As I put my paintbrush down
And leave you behind
In the hopes of finding myself.

As the crowd watches in awed silence, I dance with steps larger than life.

On this stage, I once again learn
To dance and sing for myself
I learn that expression comes first
And impressed souls soon follow.
Thunder crawls inside the opera house
And the reddest of roses rain down,
A reminder that I, too, can be appreciated.

As the red curtain falls, we become the difference between creation and creator.

I have appreciated you for long enough
So with this poem the image of you I tore.
Yes, you are my art, my creation
But remember, I am your creator.

Literary: Full or Foolish

When you left me,
I ate my words
During a breakfast
Of half-cooked promises
And steaming farewells.
In heaping servings of useless pain,
You burned my throat
Until I could speak no longer.

When you came back,
We chose our words
During a lunch
Of hand-picked conversations
And only the best of phrases.
In tiny servings of expensive love,
We emptied our hearts
Until we could give no longer.

Before I left,
You withheld your words
During a dinner
Of candle-lit emotions
And indulgent declarations.
In a single serving of bittersweet goodbyes,
I smothered your intentions
Until you could stay no longer.

Literary: Theory of Strings

We hang upon the threads of the universe
And they're just about ready to break.

We've been spread
So thin
So far
For so long
With so little
To still hold on to.

And yet
We're still here,
Standing in the middle of everything,
Fighting the tides that flow against us.
Our words cling
To the strings of the galaxy
Like stars.
Dead and dying,
But they continue to shine.

We punch holes through time and space,
Defy theories that determine the world
And reject every hypothesis that says
That the planets will never align for us.

And to what end?

For me to love you
In zero gravity?
Where my words merely float around
Because they carry no weight for you?

Maybe we’ve been holding on
To the stardust for so long
That it’s starting to blind our eyes.

My love, how strong we have been
To grapple with the world
And all its follies
But I think
It’s time to cut loose from each other.

Literary: Pangako, Huli Na

Paumanhin
Dahil sa dulo ng lahat
Pagkukulang pa rin
Ang kinahinatnan ko.

Literary: Wherever

To the boy over “there,”

Sometimes I wonder about the very definition of love.

This world has taught me that love
Is to be determined by “here,”
That being “far” is love’s greatest enemy,
That “proximity” makes love flawless,
That “present” means the immediate,
That “here” is where you should be.

And if not, it is not love.

But one thing the world forgot to mention
Is that love can also be “there,”
That “far” can mean “I’m coming soon,”
That “distance” helps us grow,
That “present” can be something for later,
That “there” can be where we both are.

And yes, I deem that love.

I know we are worlds apart,
but every word I read from you
slowly but steadily
builds itself a home in my heart
as they tie loose heartstrings
to a promise of “together.”

Every syllable works
to fill up the void,
to create a sense of belonging,
to complete the nooks and crannies,
in between my fingers
that, as for now,
continue to look for yours.

I know that “here” is where you are not right now,
But I believe that “there” is where we can both be.

Love,
The girl from over “here”

Literary: Take Care

I have loved you since
We first sat together

I have always loved you
But refused to acknowledge it.

I watched you be with others.
I watched them leave you.
You watched me be with others
Even if it has always been you.

You watched me be with others,
Feeling but never really loving
I watched you be with others,
Giving but never really caring.

I was always here.
I never left you.
I saw every single heartbreak
You've been through.
But am I really not enough?
Am I really just a friend?
I guess we're both suppressed by this
And we will be 'til the end.

You are always here
Even though I run away.
You have seen every heartbreak
That I try to breeze through.
You are more than enough
And that's the problem.
I fear that loving you now
Means leaving you in the end.

But still I stay.
And here I say
I will be anything
You want me to be.
I'll be there
When the pain you can't bear,
I'll be the one who cares.

But I want to stay.
So if it means
Doing anything
But showing you I love you,
I will do it.
When the pain's too much to bear,
I hope you know that I do care.

Literary: The Astronaut x The Universe

The Astronaut
Crow

The boy was walking and there up ahead
The sun which used the heavens as a bed
With its fiery form and dazzling eyes
The boy immediately fell for its guise

The boy was smart and so he knew
He can’t love the sun from this point of view
So he snatched a ladder from their attic
He then realized it was a crazy antic

The boy then figured that he had to think harder
So he decided to build a much higher ladder
The boy knew that a single tree won’t do
So he cut down a whole forest which his ancestors grew

Piece by piece, he put the ladder together
Step by step, to the sun, he got nearer
But halfway through, albeit too soon
The sun went down, replaced by the moon

It wasn’t long before the moon went away
Then the sun rose, already on its way
The sudden realization was sudden but clearly hard
Of a bigger picture, he was nothing but a shard

The sun and the moon were unknowingly chasing each other
Unconsciously, maybe they love one another
They may be blinded but the boy can see clearly
That his side of the story was not happy

The Universe
Ms. Takes

She was all the boy has ever known.
When night had yet to take the throne
And lay claim on the heavens above,
He’d watch her fiery form, claiming she is love.

Yet the sun was smart and so she knew
She can’t let the boy give her love so true
So she kept herself millions of miles away
Because it was the moon she wanted to sway

The sun figured this was the right thing to do
Only to find a wooden ladder coming through
The sun watched as he cut down a whole forest,
Hating that she could give nothing in exchange for his best.

Piece by piece, she tried breaking the ladder down,
Yet she knew, in love, there was no way around.
So she left the boy to what he was doing
And waited for the moon to take away the morning

The sun knew the moon would not wait for her
So she rose into the heavens like a blur,
Forgetting about the boy who was still building
A future she did not want a part in.

There have been many stories like this
Where we chase after a certain kind of bliss
That blinds us into a love waiting to rust
Because we love those who cannot love us.

Literary: For One

Hello. How have you been?
Do you remember when we used to watch movies together?

We would stand at the counter, side-by-side,
Arms touching, a silent promise of proximity,
And we'd both be reaching for our pockets.
In the end, you were always the one who paid.
"I'll let you pay next time," you'd always tell me,
But it never came
And every time a new movie comes out,
You'd still be the one who says
"Tickets for two, please."

We always stay for the end credits.
You say you'll be on that screen one day,
Maybe an actor, a director,
A cameraman, anything,
As long as you are there.

I'd always laugh at you
And say, "Okay, I'll watch the movie
So long as I pay!"

You would smile at me
With eyes so melancholic,
I'd forget about the movie.
"Okay," you'd say,
And that's when the lights go on
And I feel like I am leaving a part of us
On the cinema chairs
And taking your heavy heart with me.

Today, we're both at the counter,
I am standing here,
But you are a name on a poster.

It only comes to me now:
I never said, "We'll watch the movie together."

I smile at the cashier,
With the kind of sad smile you used to give me.

"Ticket for one, please."

We both had dreams.
Problem was, you were the essence of mine
but I was never a part of yours.

Literary: Contrasts

If you were a photo album
In the dark attic,
I would be the sentimental romantic.

Sepia tones are what's left
Of memories I tried to keep.
I yearn to remember
What those colors used to mean.
You have been gone for too long,
But I wish to keep you now.

I am wary, yet wistful:
I may not be able
To bring back the shades that once were
But I dream of bringing color back to you.

If you were a painting
In an art gallery,
I would be the blind visitor.

Vivid colors are lost
To eyes that cannot see.
I yearn to feel
How the paints dance in fusion
But you are behind velvet ropes
And I am too far away.

I am dismayed, but overjoyed:
I may not be able
To see the hues that make you,
But I am sure someone else will.

If you were a sketch
In a private collection,
I would be the powerless guest.

Monochrome lines are testimonies
Of what you are to the collector.
I yearn to see
What a splash of color could do
But my palette has the wrong shades
And you were never mine to begin with.

I am defeated, yet content:
I may not be able
To replace the somber tints,
But I understand I have no right to change you.
