Literary: Autonomy Over Anatomy

I don't feel like I own the body I've been given
It has been carved not in the way I want it to be
Even if I tailor it the way I see fit
My body still could not match
This soul that dreams to dance

As I gaze upon the mirror I'm greeted by the sight
Of a short stature with thick bones and
Of skin draping a little too tight
Around layers of disproportionate muscles and bones
Cruel reminders that I could never achieve
The lithe aesthetic that defines ballet

I watch other dancers with a mixture of reverence and jealousy
As I know I'm way too far from being like them
Next to their elegant precision, I am a blur of motion
If they are the embodiments of ballet's ethereality,
I am the lack of it

I wonder how easy it would have been to move as enchanting as them
If I had even just a fraction of their perfect bodies
But on stage, where it should have only been
Me and the music in harmonious concert
I become lost as I feel the discouraging look of the director upon me
A look that seared through my hopes in dancing

My spirit drowns further into the depths of dismay
As another barrier presents its way to set me off course from my goal
A foot injury, caused by too much weight on my toes
Becomes a weight on my shoulders
Shoulders that are too high and tense
There's tension in my movements that makes me look
As if I'm carrying a burden on my chest
The chest which I wish were more prominent
But was already too protuberant for ballet

I've learned to hate this body
But no matter how much I physically burn myself out
No matter how less I eat
I couldn't change this flawed body

Since then I've spent my days in cycles of
Dancing, aching, drowning
Dancing, aching, hoping
Dancing, aching, trying

I tried to pursue other art forms
But my heart keeps on finding its way back to dancing

What am I supposed to do with this stubborn heart?
What am I supposed to do with this misplaced soul?

All I know is that I could no longer hold
My dreams by the chains of excuse
So I would dance despite the limits of my soul's shelter
I would dance and let no one take that gift away from me

Let the wind of hope set its course unto the embers of my passion
Let these embers catch the flames that once kindled in my heart
And let my heart outshine my body's capabilities

The world may throw its toughest rocks upon my path
But I will be ready to chassé back to my journey
Towards the solace in dancing

Literary: Deux

I was alone…

I had no place to call my home
I spent my days
Lying hopelessly on the streetside
As people passed by me
Heartlessly
Without care
Without pity

And as I looked upon them I saw
Faces full of smiles and laughter
And eyes filled with joy
Not sparing me a glance

What I saw were hearts
Colder than my bed of stone
They called me useless
Not worthy of any attention

I had a world of my own
And no one to share it with
I heard voices no one else could hear
And saw wonders no one else could see

I never caused anyone any harm
But people dodged around my perimeter
As if I were
A contagious, fatal infection of some kind

They barely tried to understand me
Refused to come near me
Mocked me ceaselessly
They called me sick
A creature
Not to be approached

It's quite ironic
That I, who have never found true shelter
Served as a home—
But only to melancholy

...until I met you.

All of a sudden
Without warning

You entered my life

To my surprise
You offered me your hand
Without any trace of derision.

Could you finally be the one
Who will understand my quirks?

When we're together...

Now that our lives are intertwined
I feel like I have broken free
From the pariah I once was

To my fate I vowed
My dedication for you.
I will go through all means
In order to keep
The company I've longed
For so long

Together, we built a fortress
Every inch of it
Made only of our
Shared entirety

It stands as refuge
For the two of us
And us alone

...I can be who I truly am.

There's no need to conceal
Let me know your desires

Oh I won't hide
The secrets inside

Deep inside
You'll find my heart
Toiling with pain,
Boiling with rage
From the past
I cannot erase

The world is an ideal place

With you
I share the same sentiments,
With you
I can share my laments.
I feel power
I feel strong
For the first time.

—only if we weren't around, they say.

But if an ideal place

Is a world
Where the abandoned
Are ignored

Is a world
Where the different
Are ostracized

I'd rather stay in our own world.

Literary: Hinagpis ng Magaganda

Magandang maging maganda
sa lipunang bukas
ang mga mata
sa pagtingun sa
panlabas na anyo
ngunit hindi naman
mulat sa
pag-unawa ng kalooban.

Magandang maging maganda.
Sino ba naman kasing hindi magnanais
hangaan at kagiliwan?
Kung ikaw ay maganda,
hindi mo na kailangang
mamroblema pa.
Kaunting pakiusap lang,
hiling mo'y sasagutin agad
ng taong nabihag
ng 'yong kariktan.

Magandang maging maganda.
'Di ka na mahihirapan
'pagkat ikaw na ang lalapitan
ng dagat
ng mga taong
Handang sagupain
ang alon
malapitan ka lamang.

Magandang maging maganda
hanggang sa
Mapaso ka sa tilamsik ng
mga tingin, salita at hiling
na pinaningas
ng inggit.

Dahil sa iyong ganda
maraming naaakit, lumalapit;
kumakapit
sa pag-asang
sila'y 'yong mapapansin
kung ika'y kanilang
kaibiganin.

Mapapalapit
ka sa kanila.
Mapapalapit
ka nang hindi mo alam
ang tunay nilang pakay.
Mapapalapit
hanggang sa
makapante na ang iyong loob.

Mapapalapit
hanggang sa
mapalayo.

Mapapalayo
ng pagpapahayag nila
ng kanilang damdamin.
Lalayo
sila dahil sa
sakit
mula sa iyong pagtanggi;
habang ikaw naman ay
masasaktan
dahil sa kanilang
paglayo.

Ika'y mapapaisip kung
ang pagmamalasakit
na kanilang pinaramdam
ay tunay nga ba talaga
o tangka lang
upang mahulog sa kanila
ang 'yong damdamin.

Sa kanilang paglisan,
binunot nila ang
dating itinanim na
mga pagsasama
mula sa'yong puso
hanggang sa ito'y
dumugo.

Ipamumukha nilang
hindi mo kailangang mag-alala
'pagkat marami ka naman daw
kaibigan.
Ngunit ang hindi nila maintindihan
ay ikaw rin ay nasasaktan.

Tulad ng bulaklak
kukupas din
ang hiwaga ng iyong kagandahan.
Hindi na ito tatalab
upang mabawi pa
ang natatangi
niyong pagsasamahan
na dali-dali lang nawala.

Sa ganitong mga pagkakataon,
maganda pa nga ba maging maganda?

Literary: The Cold Concrete Floor

The lone dying tree summons me
But chains of lassitude
Bind my feet unto the cold concrete floor

The heaven’s howling gave a storm warning
Then through the moldy window I see
The lone dying tree amongst gray strikes of lightning

I slept upon the lullaby of thunders
Dreamt about the prime of life I missed in my youth
Then cursed the senility brought about by age

When my eyes opened to the unbidden sun
I was greeted by a sight that I thought
Would never come out of its grave

The lone tree, once again, summons me
It waits patiently with roots
Bound to the warm moist soil

Its luster of green gradually revives
The tree is turning into a state
I should have revered decades ago

Now, before the flowers dwindle into buds
I would not miss the chance
To heed the call of the seemingly young tree

But I can’t

With my feet still bound
On the cold concrete floor

Literary: I Speak English

"I am an Xxxxxian, I speak in English."

Marami pa tayong kailangang matutunan at mapagtanto.

Literary: Night's Dying Glow

He glows
Indeed, he radiates
A soft soiled yellow glow

His veins resonate
Rays of light
That just glow
Within the walls
Of his own body

Come, look closer
Tread your gaze
Along the directions that go
Against the current
Of the rays

There your eyes will reach his center
Where you'll realize
That the rays come from
A now intangible source
Surrounded by a hollow space

You might ask,
"Why is it that his heart's empty
When he is given such
An honorable role?"

Now, that's exactly why he's empty

He has expend a huge fraction
Of his light to guide others
He has devoutly done his job
Of pulling the tides
To meet the favor of others...

Until he drowned
His heart
With his own gravity

Now
You can still see him glowing
Yet
Fading in a rate
No one regards

Literary: A Somber Night

It is a somber night.

The lamp post gleaming a dim light, flickers as fast as your fickle feelings.

The dry night breeze that runs across our skin is biting cold. But it is nowhere close to your words that still chill my heart.

The distance between us when we sat down on this bench is nothing compared to the distance we are about to have.

But don't worry, I'm okay.

Now you turn your head towards my direction. Maybe you will take back what you said.

I wanted not to see your face again but I gave in just to see your eyes give me an apologetic gaze. I look back at you with eyes forming millions of questions, but all I could muster is:

"Why?"

Literary: A Book-lover’s Paradise

My paradise is a collection of paradises
It acquaints me to various phases, places and faces

It’s nothing like a utopia of rainbow and sunshine
Nor of comrades delight on cloud nine

Rather, it radiates its own earthly beauty
Diffusing the fragrance of a freshly cut pine tree

Golly! What joy it brings as I dance along its aisles
Through its book assemblage of diverse colors and styles

Page by page, numerous doors arise
Off I go to and from my paradise

Literary: If Your Love Will Be True

I've fallen
For you lips
Even if I haven't met them
Yet.

You're shaking
Me up,
Deep down my soul,
Waking my spirit
To this nascent love.

I will capture
Your face
And its teeming melancholy.
Keep them in the archives,
Let its memory sink in
Then replace it
With better days.

I will draw
You back,
Hold your hands
Whenever
You stray
Whenever
You please
Whenever
You need me close to you.

I will swim
In the sweet scent of your breath.
Helplessly I'll drown
In the geyser
Replenished by tears
Forming in the tips of your lashes,
Forming out of your
Unfiltered love.

Literary: Laundry Break

She looks down
But her eyes reflect
The sun, the moon, the stars and clouds
Regarding them with respect she'll never attain
Since her chosen fate lays along
Ripples and waves

Ripples and waves
Show on her skin
Weary from the water's bite
Wishing for the warm exhaust
From cities
She has never been to

She has never been too
Tired to still let her mind wander
She wonders if her trail of hope, like thin spirals of smoke
Shall blow her light mind up to
The sun, the moon, the stars and clouds
She has never been to

She has never been too
Tired to hear stories about cities
That edge far from the world she has known
She's sure this place suits her for they say
Alphabets of people and lights collide to form her familiar
Ripples and waves

Ripples and waves
Root from her head
As the day ends, she let's her hair
Cascade down her sides, cover her back
Her eyes follow
The tangles of weak current and then
She looks down

Literary: Washed Out Spectrum

She has the bloodshot eyes sheathed by lids
That weigh even more than she has ever been
She's a pain to touch with all her bones jutted out

Orange are the flames of energy now lost
They danced with winds of any strength
This passion once translated out to her movements

Dead yellow toenails dressed her to the tips
In close resemblance to her career's end
Painted toes and painted smiles mask the struggles inside

Green and blue are the bruises she endured
But all these pains would never match feels now
Pent up frustration now makes her numb

To a lavender's scent she was often compared
Her motions soothing with a feminine grace
But her petals now shrivel and fall to the ground

She is a full spectrum, but a washed out one

Literary: Anchor to your Flight

Are you certain my little bird?
Your reasons I'd rather leave unheard
Leaving me — is it your real intention?
Would you stay if I send my contention?

My beloved bird, look around this haven
Which served as repose from your anguish back then
Recall all the moments we spent here together
Won't you regret forsaking these altogether?

Halt! Stay! You should not yet depart
Oh what grief you bring my feeble heart!
It was I who relieved the perils you withstood
Is this truly the attitude you pay me as gratitude?

Though I know it’s selfish to anchor you here
To my pleas, I try not to let conscience interfere
Though ill, I wish you the worst of luck, like one
That will break your wings to a state good as gone

Now here comes the night and its speckled stars
Entrancing as the first time they lured you from afar
You'll soon careen to them with all fervor and fire
How selfish of you to consider only your desire!

Out there are dangers you can't even imagine
The blanket of darkness shall cover you in
From the biting breeze of the cold grim night
I can't save you for you're far out of my sight

Once again, I ask you, my precious bird
Have my warnings made your will deterred?
Aha! Now there's hesitation in your eyes
Good lord, please let that doubt arise!

Alas, your mind is set and my voice is hoarse
Oh dear, you’ll leave me forever in remorse
I feel the wind stir as your wings start to flutter
It is a pain to watch you flying far away... farther... farther and farther...

Literary: Oh Death, Heed Us

Oh death let not your voice prevail
No matter how desperate our people wail
Use not, dear death, your alluring cadence
Never will we surrender to you in obeisance
In falsetto you attest your own resplendence
But fool us not, we’re ware of your fiendish bargains
Now solace come forth, thee we hail
Oh death we won't let your voice prevail!

Literary: Second Class

I am all the extremes put into one
I am the summer’s tingling heat
The winter’s burning cold air
And the field’s bloom on a springtime

I am the mountain looked up to
The surge of wind strong enough to blow you
The threat of destruction
Beneath a reputation admired upon

I am all the shades of the daybreak’s spectrum
A sight of ever majestic predictability
You might exhaust upon seeing me day by day
But ignore me not for I am the immeasurable divine stars

I am the highest of tides
Along the current of massive waves
That crashes unto stones and buildings
Beware, beware! Or you’ll drown within me

Oh, dear masters of life
Break me, tear me, and wear me down
I will retaliate and get back up
For I am the bullet ricocheting past your trigger

Regard me with those scornful eyes
Surmise me erroneously for all I care
Even if you see me as no one
I know I am built from great impossibilities

Literary: Unseen x Unspoken

Unseen

I would have,
if I could
I wanted run away with you
Do everything and anything

See the things we never saw before
Find the hidden secrets
Within the cracks of the words we say
And the reasons beyond the boundaries of perfection

Risk the time and effort
That could’ve served a better purpose
And seek the worthiness
Of the sincerest moments

But instead,
We settled for the places that were enough
Places that made us feel
That perfection is a possible concept

She’d talk about how beautiful the sunset was
And say it was as beautiful as me
And I’ hate how she’d make me blush every time
But I love hearing her soothing words anyway

She loves to sneak up behind me
And give me the tightest of hugs
How warm it felt like
How secure I feel when I’m with her

As if it’s like I’m always at home
She’d bring me the assurance I needed
As I would do the same
I couldn’t ask for more.

How I’d do anything
Just to see how those perfect moments looked like
If it’s just as beautiful
As the feeling.

It breaks my heart
Knowing that I never saw any of them,
Not the moments, nor the places,
Not even you.

How I wished
I could’ve seen how beautiful the sunset was
How I’d look like whenever I’d blush
Even I don’t know what that looks like, but I loved how she said it.

How I wish she could’ve lived to see the day
That black turned to shapes and colors
Blanks were filled with objects, places, and faces
I suddenly saw everything, everything except you.

The only thing I got to see
Was a stone with your name on it
And a quote saying
“I was loved through nothingness”

She was the best and only one I ever had,
And I never even got the chance
To see through the eyes
Of my lover.

Unspoken

I would have,
If you let me
If you just showed me how much you wanted to
I would have brought you to places

I’ve ventured through alleys and valleys
I’ve traced the map from point to point
I dream of sharing all these sights
Show the wonders life has to offer

You were willing to risk it all
Except being seen by the people who know us
Hide the sincerest feeling we have
From hearing others say nothing or too much

So now,
We remain in our own world
In this concept of perfection you made yourself
Where the two of us are the only characters

I will talk about the sunset’s beauty
And how your blush complements its colors
Say that you’re more than picturesque sky
To see your face painted with a smile

I will always bring you thrill
Even in the simplest manners
Like sneaking behind you for an embrace
Then let comfort seep into you

In every waking moment
I wish to be with you
If you just let me
If you would not let dreams stay as they are

How I’d do anything
Just to make these perfect moments true
It will be more beautiful
Than how it made you feel

It breaks my heart
Knowing that you never saw any of them
Not my dreams, nor my intentions
Not even me

How I wish
I could bring you to watch the sunset
To see your blush brightening up to a glow
Upon the moon’s way up the night sky

Let’s stop just hoping
We’ll live to see the day everything’s clearer
Pitch black days will be remodeled
Into a palette of colors

Once I left a stone etched with the words:
“I was loved through nothingness”
But everything changed
When you came

She was the best I ever had,
If she only tried to see through my eyes
She would’ve realized how much
I love her.

Literary (Submission): Paper Stars

Glow, ever glow
All those paper stars
That freckled the ceiling
With ethereal colours of silver and gold
Glittering with their faint light
As if they were solely shining for us

All the rows of paper stars,
That sea of light divine.
They guided us through the crevices
Between the crowd of people,
Until we found each other,
Far from the brink of parting.

Dancing beneath those paper stars
Was like holding you for the first time
Your gaze told me so much
Oh, how you held them.
Was I one of those stars
For you to look at me that way?

Glow, ever glow
Still glittering their faint light
But not afraid to shed their warmth
Are all those paper stars.
Their simple beauty,
Is forever ours to keep.

Literary: Puno't Dulo

Literary (Submission): Piitan

Nananahimik at naguguluhan,

Nahihirapan at nasasakal,

Humihiling at humihiyaw,
Sa kanyang hinagpis, wala man lamang tumanaw.

Umiiyak at umaayaw,

Literary: Clues

I have realized, I have known
That our feelings are best forsaken and thrown
Despite all the signs the universe has shown
Still I am here hoping you would not leave me all alone

You have realized, you have known
To erase the memories our love has drawn
To me, a mask of cold emotions you’ll don
But such an act also leaves you on your own

We have realized, we have known
That even if we agreed to move on
Our hearts still beat with the same tone
Now we’re left with no choice but to wait for tomorrow’s dawn

We will never realize, we will never know
How we could ever let go
When we still hear our promises bellow…
Why was our time only there to borrow?

For you to see, for me to have shown
These hardships that I have made known
To make you think that what we feel should be thrown
Please do not think that I will leave you on your own

I knew that this is what our feelings would come to
But still, I chose to be with you
These moments and memories that we’ve been through
Remains with me inside, even though you think they’re untrue

But with these emotions that I made you view
The pain you’ve felt that I can never undo
All of these things that I wish we could redo
But it seems that waiting for tomorrow’s dawn is all we can do

We will never realize, we will never know
How we could ever let go
When our hearts, to each other they look to
I’ll make sure to make whole what was broken in two.

Literary (Submission): Dysmorphia

Face
A lady, renowned as the fairest of all;
The kind every prince hopes to dance with at the ball

Mirror
A distorted reflection stabs her eyes
“You pale, hideous, grotesque witch!” she cries

Diamond
For perfection’s sake, on faults the sharp edge lands
She’s as broken as the diamond in her hand

Blood
Tracing down the veins where they once used to flow
Drops the color of lips drip until a pool grows

Mouth
A sour taste touches two lines forming odd shapes
Aggrieved, on a hollow cave her scream escapes
