by Ma'am Cathy & Ma'am Roweng :)

Mahirap. Matrabaho. Nakakastress. Nakakapagod.

May bagong learning coordinators.

And so... dizizit! :)

Hanggang sa muli, guys!

Feature (Submission): Aaron Lina: A Dreamer, An Athlete

11/07/2011 07:54:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Ma. Shari Nina G. Oliquino
9-Iron (Batch 2013)

Basketball has always been one of the sports most favored by Filipinos. Undoubtedly, it has become a part of our culture and its impact on the masses is very strong. Men and women alike, may they be young or old, continue to show love for this sport. They do this by supporting their favourite athletes and continuously seeking updates regarding recent games.

With this, a number of young Filipino boys dream of becoming a basketball superstar–aspiring to be the next Alvin Patrimonio or Kobe Bryant.

IN ACTION. Aaron during one of the UPIS games in
UAAP Season 74. Photo credit: Juanito Gregorio
Aaron Lina, who plays point guard for the UPIS Juniors Basketball Team, has the same ambition.

At the tender age of 5, Aaron already started to take a liking to basketball. From that moment, it seemed that he already knows what kind of future is in store for him. “I really love playing basketball kasi,” he says.

As Aaron reached high school, he decided to try out for the UP Juniors Basketball Team. With his skills refined by years of playing, he got in and was also accepted at the University of the Philippines Integrated School. He’s now in the 9th grade and is enjoying being a regular high school student.

When asked on how his athletic career influenced his personal life, he answered, “Maganda. It’s because I gained more friends who helped me become a better player and a better person as well. I also learned many things.” This just proves that being a basketball player is beneficial for Aaron in various ways. He stated that he improved his self-discipline and learned to work more effectively in a team.

“Very supportive din ang family ko. They watch our games and my father often teaches me the right things to do when playing basketball,” he adds.

While pursuing his dreams of becoming a basketball superstar, Aaron’s parents and other relatives serve as his own cheering squad. Undeniably, they give strength and courage to the young athlete.

Nevertheless, Aaron also plans to pursue medical studies. “Kung hindi player, I want to be a doctor,” he says with a smile on his face.

Aaron Lina continuously strives to be the best at his chosen craft. In no time at all, we hope to see him in larger arenas and perhaps, as a star player in an NBA team.

“Never stop dreaming. Hard work and love for the game will help you succeed and reach your dreams. Study hard!” he leaves as a final remark.

SF Presents McFairy: A Twisted Fairytale

11/05/2011 10:46:00 AM Media Center 0 Comments

Banaag, Gutierrez

As a final requirement, the UPIS Speech Fundamentals Class held its culminating activity program last October 17 at the Multipurpose hall.

The program's purpose was to create a platform for UPIS students to showcase their talent and creativity in public speaking.

Patricia Enriquez and Noraiza Coquilla of 7-Jupiter covered Selena Gomez's Who Says and Pink's Perfect. Miguel Bongato from 10-Narra presented his monologue of Lancelot's piece: Act 2, Scene 2 from Shakespeare's novel Merchant of Venice while Red Rivera from 8-Butterfly orally expressed her own interpretation of Daren Criss' No Way.

Finally, the SF Class performed a musical play titled McFairy: A Twisted Fairytale, wherein Peter Pan, one of the main characters, tries to change the way how the stories ended.

The characters Peter Pan, Cinderella, Prince, Belle and Beast, Shrek, Fiona, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Flash and Quasimodo were played by Jomike Gemora, Deneese Montalbo, Yzrael Dumaguing, Red Rivera, Emerson Sandoval, Anthony Dacoco, Alissa Villareal, Regina Garcia, Jean Gutierrez, Jaime Mejia and, Kyle de Guzman respectively.

“Proud ako sa kanila dahil “fruit of labor” nila ‘yon,” said SF class adviser Ms. Sheila Fernandez. The class’ idea to conceptualize a play with twisted fairytale endings was well executed, and when they were asked what were they able to learn from the experience, Red Rivera replied, “Kahit magulo ang buhay, there’s always a fairytale!”

Feature: A Tribute to NU: Everyone’s Home of NU Rock

11/01/2011 09:25:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Angelo Fetalvero

It was a surreal moment, something never thought to be possible. Stifled cries and words of bereavement filled the audio booth as DJs broke from their cool personas and cried over the loss of something so dear to them. Outside, hundreds of mourning fans filled Emerald Road as a mixture of grief and disbelief ran through everyone’s heads. Finally, when the clock almost reached midnight, the moment everyone dreaded finally happened.

“It’s a minute before 12. NU107 is DWFM at 107.5 megahertz in Pasig, once the loudest and proudest member of KBP. This has been NU 107, the Philippine’s one and only home of new rock. This is NU 107, we are signing off.”

Chris Hermosisima’s words were the final ones to be broadcast on air by a DJ but the station was not yet done. Keeping with its hard core roots, the station went out with a bang. The Eraserhead’s “Huling El Bimbo” played in the airwaves and the fans outside the building sang it with all their heart. After the song has reached its final notes, and the fan’s adrenaline started to drop, the depressing tune of silence filled everything as hiss and static took over the frequency.

It’s hard to digest the fact that it has been nearly a year since NU 107 went off the air. The station was founded on October 31, 1987 and it rocked the airwaves for twenty three years until it ceased broadcasting on November 10, 2010. NU’s founder, banker Atom Henares, said in an interview with ANC that it was the right time to close the station as the network was languishing in the bottom of the ratings charts. The upscale market which NU targeted wasn’t advertiser friendly and they struggled in finding sponsors. Its listeners were also starting to listen to other sources of music as the station struggled to compete with the internet and music television.

The sky is dark and placid, a haven of peace and quiet in our chaotic life. It is dotted with stars, albeit barely seen in the bright lights of the city. Their glow is faint yet prominent. I cast my glance aside and see her, eyes closed as if deep in thought, enjoying the fresh air as her hair billows in the strong wind. The sunken garden is beautiful at night, peaceful and calming. She opens an eye at me and I tell her that we should retire for the night. We drive off in our old beat up Volkswagen bug, resigned in our own thoughts.

UPIS Boys Volleyball team loses to Mapua

Paolo Enrico Aljibe

The Mapua College Volleyball team defeated the UPIS Boys Volleyball team, 2 sets to none, in the last game of the 2-day UPMVT League at the Claret School of Quezon City gymnasium last September 25.

TEAMWORK. Members of the UPIS Boys Volleyball team huddle together
before a game. Photo courtesy of Paolo Aljibe.
Though UPIS showed great teamwork and determination, Mapua’s experience and skills proved to be too much and the team lost 2 consecutive sets, 25-17 and 25-14.

The team's goal was to gain experience and exposure especially for new members who played in a league for the first time.

Team captain Ali Verso played well for the team and was most commendable for his strong spikes. Setter Alex Silvestre also contributed valuable saves throughout the game.

Miguel Bongato, who played for the opposing team in one of the games, said that he learned the value of teamwork. He thought that it felt different playing for the opponent. He is also very excited to play in the UAAP and other leagues because it makes him more experienced as a volleyball player.

UPIS also lost to Claret School and the Xavier School college team earlier that day. Their UAAP games start in mid-November.

The Junior Maroons were not so lucky in the singles games, however, as Pocholo Taduran failed to beat Catilo in 3 sets, 6-11, 9-11, and 9-11. Miguel Sobrevinas won the second set against Ingeniero, 12-10, but failed to capitalize

Opinion: The Need to Stand Up

10/01/2011 08:51:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Angelo Fetalvero

It was just a trifle thing, a simple game created for some mindless fun. Its aim was to create the best and the unlikeliest picture and share it with everyone for some laughs and giggles. Yet, as people lay down in the middle of the streets as a sign of protest, in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the always frantic Manila traffic, has planking gone a bit too far? Apparently, someone in Congress thinks so.

Illustrated by Jemima Yabes
On September 20, Congressman Winston Castelo of Quezon City proposed a bill prohibiting people from planking as a means of protest. This was in response to a recent transport strike during which people planked at the middle of Espana Boulevard to show their distaste over the rocketing fuel prices. According to the congressman, doing that in the middle of the road puts the safety of both the motorists and the protesters at risk. As much as he respects the right of the protesters to express their opinion, everyone’s safety should be the top priority.

The congressman brings up a good point. Everything, including radical protests, need to be done in proper places and the middle of the road is simply not the place to do it. Planking at the middle of the road brings up unnecessary danger for everyone. Yet, banning planking as a way to express disapproval over the current norms is going a bit too far and it steps on the First Amendment right of demonstrators. Only a simple bill regulating planking and making them plank in proper areas should be passed so that the protesters can express their concerns in their own unique way while maintaining public safety.

Planking seemed to have finally piqued the government’s attention but surely this was not the reaction that the protesters wanted. It seems that the way they expressed their protests has overshadowed what they were actually protesting about.

The sky high fuel prices and the ill conceived budget cuts in the educational sector seem to have taken a back seat and the ban seems to be a ploy to make people forget about these pressing problems. These issues were the reason why those protesters were willing to endanger their safety and their bravery shows the gravity of these issues. The way that Congress reacted to these planking incidents is a big slap on the face of these protesters and shows the incompetency and inefficiency of the legislature. Instead of bickering and wasting their time over planking, officials should just get their acts together and fix the more crucial problems bugging the country like corruption, poverty and crime.

If only these officials could stand up and free themselves from the shackles of mediocrity and ignorance to tackle such major issues with the enthusiasm they showed in curbing planking, the country can certainly make great strides forward.
