Violation slips handed out

Last September 26, teachers and staff have started giving out pink slips to students who commit minor offenses such as wearing incomplete uniform, sporting improper haircut, coming in late for class, displaying unbecoming behavior, cutting class, and littering among others.

"It's for the more effective monitoring of the minor violations," says Prof. Roselle Velasquez, Assistant Principal for Academic Programs, on the function of the said pink slips.

Whenever a student commits a minor offense, he/she is asked to sign two pink slips promising to avoid committing further acts of misdemeanor.

One of those should be kept by the student as proof that they were given a pink slip and should be presented to his/her parent. While, the other pink slip is submitted by the teacher or staff who noted the offense to the adviser of the student for recording and monitoring.

Sanctions for the offenses are carried out as described in the UPIS School Rules and Regulations. ● by Ada Bayobay

 Ang mga tauhan at mga pangyayari ay pawang kathang isip lamang. Hindi hango sa tunay na buhay o karanasan. Ang anumang pagkakahawig sa tunay na buhay ay nagkataon lamang at hindi sinasadya. Walang bahagi ng kuwentong ito ang maaring ilathala at gamitin sa anumang paraan nang walang pahintulot ng may-akda.

MEGAnon: The Sharon Feeture

Sa panahon ngayon ay masasabing uso ang pagkakaroon ng matitinding “following” ang mga sikat na tambalan. Nandiyan ang KathNiel, JuliElmo, EzRian at kung sinu-sino pa. Ngunit kamakailan lang nang may bagong umusbong na tambalan, ang Sharon.

Noong Hulyo 2012 sa may MC Room, naging magkapares sina © na isang matalino’t magandang babaeng student-leader at ¨ na isa namang matipuno’t makarismang varsity player. Madalas silang mag-usap at magsama upang tapusin ang kanilang mga itinakdang proyekto. Ngunit napansin na kahit tapos na ang naturang proyekto, magkasama pa rin sila. Dito nagsimula ang mga pagtitinginang di malagay sa salita.

Dito rin nabuo ang Sharonatics, ang fans club ng Sharon, na binubuo ng matatapat at matitinding tagasubaybay ng kanilang (pilitang) tambalan. Marami sa kanila ay bukas na nagpapahiwatig ng kanilang pagsuporta sa naturang tambalan.

“Parang magkaibigan lang sila dahil, in fairness, ‘di sila naiilang sa isa’t isa.” sabi ni BSA.

“Hindi ko rin matiis na kiligin sa kanila eh kasi nakakatuwa silang tignan pag magkasama, parang laging may spark,” wika ni MAR.

Tinanong rin namin ang isang dating mahalagang tao sa buhay ng ating student leader. Ito naman ang kanyang mensahe, “Stay strong. Nasa likod niyo lang ako.”

Nang tanungin naman si Bb. RCD, ang nasabi niya lamang ay, “Mega na, something pa.”

“You get to develop feelings for each other when you’re close to each other… Proximity,” pahayag ni MDC. “They look good together,” dagdag pa niya.

Humingi rin kami ng panayam mula sa dynamic duo ukol sa kanilang mga matatag na fanbase at ito ang kanilang sinabi.

“Just keep on supporting us and we will keep on entertaining you. Love you guys,” sabi ni varsity player.

“Yak! Kadiri! Ba’t naman kasi?!” sagot naman ni student leader.

Hindi na maipagkait ang chemistry ng tambalang Sharon. Patuloy na dumarami ang mga taga-suporta ng pares nila. Bagamat hindi makatotohanan ay matatag pa rin ang mga tagasubaybay ng kanilang nakakakilig na tambalan dahil sa patuloy nilang pagdedeliver sa kanilang mga fans.

Grado 3-6 rumampa sa Multi

Bilang bahagi ng selebrasyon ng Buwan ng Wika 2012, ginanap ang Rampa ng grado 3-6 sa ganap na 11:30 ng umaga sa Multi-Purpose Hall noong Setyembre 5.

Ipinakita ng mga mag-aaral ang iba’t ibang kasuotan sa Pilipinas. Para sa grado 3, kasuotan mula sa Katagalugan, kasuotan naman mula sa Mindanao ang para sa grado 4, kasuotan mula sa Silangang Pilipinas para sa grado 5 at kasuotan mula sa Visayas para sa grado 6.

Sa grado 3, ang nakakuha ng unang gantimpala ay sina Rochelle Viñas at Jabez Prayer Bote ng 3-Sapa.

Para naman sa grado 4, sina Dominique Trinidad at Aeschylus Nario ng 4-Labanos ang nagkamit ng unang gantimpala.

Sina Roel Ramolete at Joyce Asuncion naman ng 5-Arayat ang itinanghal na panalo para sa grado 5.

UPIS tries out computerized records system

There's always something new!

Apart from reverting back to 4-day schedule and handbook, the administration has also been trying a computerized system for UPIS students’ records.

Start
According to Prof. Velasquez, the initial idea of the computerized system first started back in 2004 when Dr. Julian Abuso was still Principal and Dr. Ronaldo San Jose was the Assistant Principal. They conducted a trial run and encoded the data using diskettes. Unfortunately, the project was discontinued after the pilot testing because of several glitches in the system.

Developer

 Prof. Velasquez adds that it has actually been a year since the beginning of this project. The current administration enlisted the help of Ms. Elizabeth Loyola of UPIS batch 2008 in programming the system. Ms. Loyola is currently taking Computer Science in UP Diliman. She is also part of a corporation that makes computer programs for various companies. She has volunteered to do this project for free since she saw the need for computerization even when she was studying in UPIS. Prof. Velasquez says that this is a huge help since it would have cost roughly Php 130,000 if they were to hire other developers. Another advantage is that Ms. Loyola is already familiar with the UPIS system so she is to customize the system to suit the needs of the school.

Objectives

 Prof. Velasquez explains that the main objective of the computerization is to ensure the accuracy of the student records. She says that in the past, the student body’s grades are written down one by one by a handful of staff, thus, there is always a high possibility for human error to occur.

"The computerized system is also helpful for the generation of school transcripts that are often requested by alumni. The new system is also of use for future researches to be conducted by the ORDP," adds Prof. Velasquez.

How the Program Works

 A computer server hosts a program which contains the database of the students' records. It has the capacity to handle the update of grades and student and faculty profiles, and can generate the permanent record, transcript, honor roll, and class list of every batch. Because it holds all of the students' data, the server is dedicated to house only the files related to the computerization project.

The staff of the records office has updated the student profiles into the database. Now, teachers can finally access the terminal where they can input and print the grades themselves, and just sign it after. This makes the result more accurate since it is only accessible from a limited number of terminals.

The project team is still continuing to update the program based on the school's needs. They also recommend getting new equipment for the use of the records office.

Advantages

On the surface, the effect of this new system may not be visible to this year's K-10 students, but for the ones who have always been calculating and writing the grades of every UPIS student, it is a huge help. Not only is it a faster way of updating everything, it also provides a more efficient and more accurate way of recording for the teachers and the ORDP staff.

Progress

The project is composed of 5 phases: developing the framework of the project, encoding and software development, pilot testing, completing and refining the modules, and completion of the program.

Grades encoding and generation is now computerized, in time for 1st Quarter Card Giving on September 14.

Ayala breaks grounds in UPIS

Ground-breaking ceremonies were held to officially start the construction of the U.P. Town Center at the UP Integrated School last June 18.

The ceremony was held at the UPIS basketball court and was attended by the officials from both the University of the Philippines and the Ayala Land Corporation.

UPIS administrators, Prof. Ronaldo San Jose, Principal, and Prof. Nancy T. Flor, Assistant Principal for Administration, were also present in the ceremony.

The school building will remain untouched until next semester when UPIS is expected to move to the new building being constructed at the Narra Residence Hall lot. The construction of this new 7-10 building and the renovation of the 3-6 and K-2 buildings began in December 2011 and May 2012, respectively. Both projects are expected to be finished sometime between September-January 2012.

The Town Center is very similar to the U.P. Ayala Technohub and will include restaurants, shops, bookstores, an amphitheater, and a university library, among others. Its construction is expected to start after all the UPIS buildings are finished.
