Literary: To my dearest Abyss

To my dearest Abyss,

CURIOSITY

We talk incessantly in class,
you invariably make my cheeks red.
You said you adore my smile,
and my exceptionally ravishing face.

You choose always me,
as your partner in school projects.
We love our many matching outfits,
Especially our dazzling picture lockets.

We draw each other on glittered papers,
and I love your heavy-lidded eyes.
You always hug me from the back,
and after class you walk me home safely.

I’m so thrilled to have you.

CAPTIVATION

You just called me one day to say, “Tara gala,”
and went on to shower me with treats.
But I feared that your soles got sore
from all the walking that we did.

You spotted that character shirt,
and got us matching ones.
We held hands as we giggled,
and ate the kiddie meal you ordered.

I felt your weight against mine
when you dozed off on the way home.
I relived that day as I lay on my bed,
On the pile of clothes I tried on the night before.

I’m so lucky to have you.

FALLING

The day of my birthday,
to my house you came.
With a pink cake in your hand,
and two cinema tickets in the other.

You cackled and made fun of my face,
because my eyes got swollen from the sad movie.
To the photobooth you pulled me,
and put on the mustache prop.

I even saved the bus ticket
that you paid for on the ride home.
Just like last time,
my shoulder became your pillow.

In front of my house’s porch,
I thanked you for everything that day.
You looked me in the eyes,
gave me a daring smile and said:

“I’m happy to have a friend like you.”

Love,
The Girl Who Fell

Literary: Pahinga

Panahon na upang magpahinga.
Tahanan ang nais matamasa.
Malayo na ang aking nalakbay.
Pasalamat at ako’y ‘di bumigay.

Panibagong taon, panibagong saya,

Angat-baba, angat-baba,
ang buhay ay puno ng kaba.
Anong mayroon sa panibagong taon?
Utak ay punong-puno ng tanong.

Talon dito, talon doon,
iiwan ang malulungkot na panahon.
Punas dito, punas diyan,
pagagalingin ang masasakit na mga sugat.

Maraming mga nangyari,
ayoko nang maulit pang muli.
Kukunin ko ang mga karanasan,
at mga luha’y aking iiwan.

Ako’y nasasabik nang maramdaman ang tahanan,
pamilya’t kaibigan ay muling mahahagkan.
Puno ng mga taong ika’y dadamayan,
Yakap ng bahay ay hindi mapapantayan.

May tawanan dito, may yakap doon.
Wala nang nais kundi maparoon.
Pagmamahal ng buong pamilya ang iyong madarama.
Tila ba’y nalilimutan ang mga problema.

Kaya panahon na upang magpahinga muna.
Ako’y uuwi at sarili’y ihahanda.
Aasang ang bagong taon ay parang tahanan,
komportable, maliwanag, at puno ng kasiyahan.

Literary: She Flew

A newborn bird has come into the world,
still doesn’t know how to sing and fly.
In the darkness of a hole in a tree,
there she resides with her mother so old.

The mother goes out to search for food,
she always comes home with claws full of fruits.
The hatchling devours every seed every day,
until her vivid complexion of feather is displayed.

One day, the mother goes out again.
The daughter waits and waits,
but not a single flap of wings is heard.
She starts to worry and peeks from the hole from time to time.

The next morning, news comes to her tree.
Shocked about what she's heard,
she stares out of the hole's opening
knowing that her mother is dead, attacked by snakes.

It’s a miracle to receive the news,
as the other birds are also scared to come out.
The neighbors are scared,
everyone’s just hiding in their nests.

The daughter can’t help to moans and groans
until the ruckus catches the attention of a snake.
The bird discerns the coming of the snake,
so she keeps quiet and learns to not use her voice ever again.

She wants to fly away,
live in a different place.
But the fear inside her
wants her to stay.

The bird grapples with it every day,
always gazing at the dull sky.
She does not know what to do,
she just sits still and despises the view.

One day, the bird sleeps soundlessly,
until the roaring of a machine is heard.
She looks down to observe what’s happening,
and a crowd of strange creatures is standing next to her tree.

The machine has jagged ends that can cut the tree in half.
The creatures have no wings
and they have brown skins.
They almost look like large monkeys.

Her tree starts to gradually lean
until she falls from the hole and lands at the bottom of the tree.
The creature tries to pick her up,
But the bird ducks into another hole in the tree.

The bird is afraid of getting seized.
She has never used her voice for help,
so she just runs and hides.
Eventually, the crowd leaves the place with a big half of the trunk from her tree.

She realizes that this is wrong,
the struggles are too much for a little bird.
She stands tall with her eyes full of anger,
she has had enough.

She decides to use her feet,
to step forward and be strong.
She decides to open her mouth,
to use her voice to be heard.

She calls and calls for help,
this is exactly what she needs.
She is scared thinking that maybe
no one will come to help.

Suddenly, a flock of birds approaches.
They understand the struggles and give her tenderness and care.
The bird cries of happiness
and decides to go with them.

At that moment,
she realizes that she is not alone.
A lot of birds experience the same struggles,
and they come together to keep on fighting.

She has lost her mother,
and she never met her father.
But with this flock of birds,
a new family is formed.

The bird knows that her life has more to it,
And that every struggle will come to an end.
She looks at the sky and spreads her wings.
And with the flock of birds, she soars.

Literary: Spawn Point

Breathing heavily as I clutch my pillow, I rouse myself awake. In an effort to calm and fully wake myself, I sit up and lean back against my headboard. For about a full five minutes, I gaze at the gauzy curtains drawn over my bedroom windows, quivering. I reach for my phone and find a missed call from an unknown number.

It's six in the morning so I decide to grab a coffee downstairs, phone in hand in case the unknown number calls again. I sit at my coffee table, wondering who it might be.

Suddenly, the nightmare that I was having before I woke pops into my head. In that nightmare, I found myself standing in the corner of my room. Out of my body. I saw myself lying unconscious on my bed and I tried to scream to wake myself up. My lips wouldn’t budge. All my senses were numbed, and I was trussed up by chains. As I tried my best to get out of this situation, I looked up. Blood dribbled from my head and spilled onto my wooden floor. Dread took over as I saw my room fill up with my blood. It was almost like a pool of blood. I tried to escape so I could wake my sleeping body, close to drowning, but the chains were so strong, as if they could never be broken by anything. Then, I am woken up by the blare of a ringtone.

It is, by far, the strangest dream I’ve ever had. I am having a hard time figuring out what it means, thinking that maybe I’m just tired before going to bed. As I finish my coffee, I notice a note reminding me to buy Halloween decorations for this coming October stuck to my refrigerator. It reads, “Gabriel! Decorations, TODAY!!” Knowing that I would forget about them again, I decide to just go and get them now. I go upstairs to get the things I need, and I am ready to go. As I’m locking my door, finally, I get a text message from the unknown number.

Y u have to list n to me! St y at home and

can el your sched le for this day!!

You’ e going to !

Please list n to me! D n’t ignore this me sage!

I stare at my phone, confused. Only one person I know messages this way. Me. The things I type come out quite funny because of my antique cellphone that has a broken keyboard. Sometimes, the letters show on the screen, but sometimes, they don't. I instantly suspect my friends to be behind this as they are the only people I message and who know about my phone’s condition. I just reply…

I hate y u! who is th s btw??

I put back my phone into my pocket and continue to walk. I like the atmosphere today. Dazzling sky with nippy air. Wet grass and freezing water. Thick coats and cozy hats. It was an ordinary day in the wintertime. I don’t own a car, so I have to walk twenty blocks from my house. I don’t mind walking because I enjoy it anyways. I start to listen to music. Around fifteen minutes later, I’m almost to the shop. I just have to cross the street and pass a bakery.

Once I enter the shop, I head straight to the decorations section. I am momentarily distracted by the small spinning carousel displayed in the center of the shop and wonder how long it's been spinning. One horse has its head cracked and I have no idea why the staff hasn’t fixed it yet. It gives off an eerie vibe. I feel drawn to it, but at the same time, I’m afraid of it. It bothers me, as if the horse is calling me. I keep seeing that horse again and again as it spins and aligns with my perspective. I grab everything that I need and head toward the counter. While waiting for the cashier to scan and total my purchases, I receive another text.

Please l sten to me! St y at the shop until

midni ght before going hom !

L sten to me or you’ll d !

PLEASE L STEN TO ME!

YOU HAVE TO UND RSTAND

THAT TH S IS NOT A J KE!

I feel like my heart is going to jump out of my chest. How does this person know that I am inside the shop? I start to realize that this is serious. I look around, realizing that whoever may be behind the unknown number wants something from me. He wants me to stay so he can easily get to me. I realize I'm shaking. I don't know what to do; I'm horrified. I just pay for everything, grab my purchases, and secure them in between my arms and my ribs. I then reply:

LEAVE ME AL NE!

H w did you get my n mber!?

WHO THE HECK IS TH S!

I run hastily outside and decide to go straight to the police station, which is twenty blocks from where I stand. The adrenaline from my body courses at the speed of light through my veins. I’m experiencing the biggest rush of my life. The cold air is biting my face. My legs are starting to become numb and stiff. I can hear my footsteps slap on the hard pavement. My heart is beating fast. I see people staring but I don’t mind; I just run. All I can do is run.

Just before making the final turn before reaching the station, I feel a strong force shove my side. I feel my feet lift off the ground like I am about to be thrown away. The next thing I know, I am lying on the ground, unable to move. I try to stand up, but I can't seem to move my hands. I try to shout but no sound comes out of my mouth. I see people looking straight at me, shouting for help. I am deeply confused and scared. My mind is blank. Screams everywhere. Shocked faces.

But eventually, all the commotion seems to lessen. The last thing I hear is an alert for a text message on my phone, which is still in my hand. Since I lie with my head tilted to the side, I am able to see the text message.

Y U’RE GO NG TO DIE!!

YOU W LL BE HIT BY A CAR GO NG H ME

AND YOU H VE TO STAY AT THE SH P!

L STEN TO ME PLEA E! I DON’T

WANT ME TO DIE! -GABRIEL

A moment later, I find myself standing next to my body, holding a phone identical to the one in my hand. This feels just like my nightmare. I see blood dripping from my head, oozing through the rough road. I look at the phone I’m holding, and I’m about to send another message to my very own number... but it’s too late.

Literary: Ligayang Nagwakas

Panibagong umaga,
Panibagong saya.
Simula nang ika'y makita,
Puso ko'y tumibok bigla.

Panibagong umaga,
Puso ko’y agad natuwa.
Simula nang ika’y makita,
Mundo ko’y tumigil bigla.
Di alintana ang anumang katuwiran,
Umikot na sa’yo ang kaligayahan.
Puso’y ibinigay nang buong-buo,
Nadarang na rin sa labis na pagsuyo.

Di alintana ang anumang katuwiran,
Lahat ng gusto, sa’yo ay makakamtan.
Lahat ay ginawa ko para sa’yo,
Sukdulang isinakripisyo lahat ng pagod ko.

Maraming bagay nais makamtan,
Waring may pinaglilihian.
Noon, ikaw ay laging nariyan,
Ngayon ay biglang lumisan.
Maraming bagay ang nais makamtan,
Maging magkasama magpakailanman.
Pero habang tumatagal, tila di na nasisiyahan,
Ako'y nalilito, sadyang naguluhan.
Bakit? Bakit ka nawala?
Iniwan kaming nag-iisa.
Sa isang sulok, lumuluha,
Sa kabila, nagsasaya ka nang walang sawa.
Bakit?

Ayaw mong magparaya,
dahil baka sa huli’y luluha kang mag-isa.
Masaya akong ika'y narito

Oo, mahal kita, at gusto pa kitang mahalin

Hahayaan mo bang malanta,
o bubuhayin mo hanggang tayo’y tumanda?

Sa huling pagkakataon, bago ka kumawala
Rosas mo nama'y ayaw kong malanta

11 taong gulang.

Takbo rito, takbo roon. Laro rito, laro roon.

Literary: The love unspoken

My heart has been sober for a very long time,
but I wish that he’d get drunk and finally tell what’s on my mind.
My heart is always idle, otherwise, he is sleeping,
but whenever I see you, he'd rather be awake than be dreaming.

Your eyes glisten like the stars above,
your presence is like a free-flying dove.
Your body is moving like the wave of sound,
your voice is like an angel’s, resounding all around.

I know that my heart beats loudly every time you’re near,
I know that I've been in love since the first time I saw you, dear.
But I’ve never been sure of what you will say if my heart talked to you,
whether you despise me or are secretly in love with me too.

I’ve always wanted to tell you what my heart wants to say,
but I ignore my heart almost every day.
I don’t know why my mind stops me,
is it scared or just protecting me?

I want to see you in my future.
Being with you is a dream of mine for sure.
But reality is knowing that we don’t talk that much,
my mind is worried that sadness is the feeling that he might catch.

My mind can’t take one step towards you,
it wants to stay away and just watch the things you do.
But my heart can’t take it anymore,
he’s going to tell the truth even though he's more scared than he’s ever been before
