Komunidad ng UP, ginunita ang anibersaryo ng Batas Militar

Nagsagawa ng malawakang kilos-protesta ang mga estudyante, guro, kawani, at manggagawa ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (UP) Diliman sa harap ng Palma Hall noong ika-21 ng Setyembre upang gunitain ang ika-46 na anibersaryo ng pagdeklara ng Batas Militar sa Pilipinas.

Dumalo ang Presidente ng UP na si Danilo Concepcion upang magbigay ng suporta sa mga raliyista. Itinalaga niya ang 21 Setyembre bilang UP Day of Remembrance sa pamamagitan ng Proclamation 1, Series of 2018.

Ang mga estudyante ay nagtipon muna sa kani-kanilang kolehiyo bago nagsanib-puwersa ang lahat sa Palma Hall.

Nagsagawa rito ng programa kung saan nagbahagi ang mga kinatawan ng ilang organisasyon ng kanilang mga sentimyento ukol sa panahon ng rehimeng Marcos at kasalukuyang pamumuno ni Pangulong Duterte.

Kabilang sa mga nagsalita si dating Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Judy Taguiwalo, na sinabing, “May mga dinadakip pa na mga tao. Wala raw pinapatay sa Pilipinas sabi nila. Ano sila, hilo? Ipaglaban ang karapatan. Ipaalam na hindi tayo papayag sa Batas Militar!”

Nagsalita rin si John Isaac ‘Ice’ Punzalan, mula sa College of Arts and Letters (CAL) at kasapi ng Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights (STAND-UP), tungkol sa pahayag ni Imee Marcos. “Hindi tayo magmu-move on! Hindi tayo makakalimot sa mga ginawa ng diktador na si Marcos. Klaro sa atin kung sino ang kaaway at terorista: si Rodrigo Duterte na nagpapahirap at pumapaslang ng mga Pilipino."

Tumugtog din ang ilang miyembro ng UP Alay Sining ng isang orihinal na kanta.

“Itong buong UP community ay nagkakaisa ngayon laban sa tiraniya at diktadura ni Duterte. Siguro matatandaan natin na sa kahabaan ng kasaysayan ng pakikibaka, nanguna ang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas sa pagpapatalsik sa diktador na si Marcos. Ngayong mayroon tayong nag-aastang na diktador sa mukha ni Duterte na patuloy na pumapatay at gumugutom sa mga mamamayang Pilipino, walang pag-aalinlangang kikilos muli ang buong komunidad ng UP para mapatalsik na si Duterte sa kaniyang pwesto,” sabi ni Nickolo Domingo, kasapi ng organisasyong Anakbayan UP Diliman.

“Itong demonstrasyong ito ay ang kolektibong pagpapakita ng galit ng mga mamamayan. Hindi na tayo papayag sa ganitong paulit-ulit na mga nangyayari: patayan, ginugutom ang mga mamamayan,” dagdag niya.

“Hindi lamang ito komemorasyon ng Martial Law noong ‘70s, kundi pagpapakita rin ng paglaban sa kasalukuyang diktadura at tiraniya ni Duterte,” pahayag ni Ram Hernandez, isang mananaliksik sa Academic Union ng UP Diliman.

Matapos ang programa, sumakay ang mga nagpoprotesta sa mga dyip patungong Plaza Miranda kung saan nakipagtipon sila sa iba pang nakikibaka mula sa iba’t ibang paaralan, sektor, at organisasyon. Sports: UPIS Fencing Team, nakipagsagupaan sa UAAP Season 80

Malungkot ngunit nakangiti pa ring tinanggap ng University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Fencing Team ang sunod-sunod na pagkatalo sa University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 Junior Fencing Tournament na ginanap sa PhilSports Complex, Pasig City noong Pebrero 8 hanggang 11.

Nakipagtunggali sina Lorenzo Bautista at Raymund Creencia ng UPIS sa unang araw sa kategoryang individual epee. Agad na na-eliminate si L. Bautista sa poules, habang pumasok sa direct eliminations si Creencia. Ngunit nabigo siya sa kanyang unang duwelo kontra kay Joshua Dayro ng Far Eastern University (FEU) Diliman – FERN College sa iskor na 15-10.

Sa individual foil match noong Pebrero 9, sumabak si Rad Pascual ng UPIS pero nalaglag sa poules. Nakalusot naman si L. Bautista sa direct eliminations at napataob ang unang kaduwelo na si Darylle Lumahan ng FEU-FERN. Pero pinatumba siya ng kasunod na kalabang si Prince John Felipe ng University of the East (UE).

Pinilit muling makipagsabayan ng UPIS sa team epee match naman noong Pebrero 10 kontra sa Ateneo de Manila High School kahit na isa pa sa mga kalaban ay miyembro ng Philippine National Team, si Jian Bautista. Nakapagtala ng 11 puntos si L. Bautista, malaking porsyento sa kabuuang iskor ng koponan, ngunit kinalaunan ay inararo sila ng matitinding opensa ng Blue Eaglets.

Hindi sila nakahabol ng mga kasamang sina Pascual, Creencia, at Craig Aquino sa sunod-sunod at walang palyang pagpuntos ng katunggali. Sa huli, wagi ang Blue Eaglets, 45-16, tambak ang Junior Maroons.

Madilim ang laban noon para kay L. Bautista na nakaranas ng ilang problema sa kalagitnaan ng laro makaraang ilang ulit na hindi pumasa sa weapon standards check ang kanyang kagamitan.

Kinabukasan, sa team foil match, naunahan naman ni Marius Barcenas ng Junior Maroons ang kalabang FEU-FERN anchor na si Jordan Lee bago pa ito makabawi, 5-2. Mabilis namang sinalakay ni L. Bautista ang score board, 10-8, sa pamamagitan ng matutulin niyang opensa at depensa.

Nag-init din sina Pascual at Aldrien Arevalo upang iangat ang marka ng pangkat ngunit di naging sapat para ungusan ang kalaban. Bigo ang UPIS sa iskor na 45-23.

"Medyo frustrated ako kasi last year na namin ito at feeling ko I wasn't able to perform as well as I was supposed to. Feeling ko parang medyo na-let down ko ‘yung mga kasama ko, pero the best I can do is to look forward and [improve] myself," sabi ni Pascual.

Kahit na kulang sa suporta, sinikap pa rin ng Junior Maroons na makapag-uwi sana ng medalya para sa eskuwelahan. Naging masakit sa kalooban ng seniors na mula sa Grado 12 ng UPIS ang pagkatalo lalo’t huling taon na nila ito sa high school division.

Kasalukuyang binubuo ang grupo ng walong miyembro lamang na sina L. Bautista, Pascual, at Creencia ng Grado 12, sina Aquino, Francis Eloriaga, at Max Salvador ng Grado 11, si Barcenas ng Grado 9, at si Arevalo naman ng Grado 8 sa pamamatnubay ni Coach Igi Cui, dating miyembro ng University of the Philippines (UP) Fencing Team. Anim sa kanila ang nakipagduwelo sa season na ito ng UAAP.

Humihingi ng suporta sa lahat ang fencing team upang magkaroon ito ng sapat na miyembro at mga gamit sa pag-eensayo nang sa gayon ay makilala bilang lehitimong varsity team ng UPIS at makakuha ng mga benepisyo mula rito.//nina Ronnie Bawa Jr. at Julius Guevarra Jr.

Sports: UPIS BVT sweep their second win in Toby's

The University of the Philippines Integrated School Boy’s Volleyball Team (UPIS BVT) snatched their second win, 25-23, 25-14, 25-12, at the Toby’s Junior Volleyball League against the Espiritu Santo Parochial School Volleyball Team (ESPS BVT) last January 27 at Toby's Arena, Pasig City.

As soon as the ball was served in the second set, UPIS BVT and ESPS BVT made the score board dance with UPIS BVT's Ron Castro, Sam Silvestre, Angelo Cingco, and Miggy Castro's swift attacks until a 10-10 time out was called.

UPIS BVT left ESPS BVT behind as Derick Urgena dominated the front lines by sliding double hits while M. Castro showed off with his dinks and counters. Silvestre finally ended the set with a hissing cut shot, 25-14.

UPIS BVT tried to surpass ESPC BVT after experiencing consecutive errors in the first set but still failed to catch up, 25-23.

As the match was about to end, UPIS BVT decided to sprint a seven point advantage, 13-6, before changing courts as M. Castro and Silvestre hammered attacks behind the net. Dex Daguman and Urgena secured UPIS BVT's defenses with double blocks and a lollipop to further widen the gap from ESPS BVT until Silvestre finally finishes the match with an ace, 25-12.

"Hindi pa kami nakakatikim ng sunod-sunod na panalo. Hindi pa kami nakaka-adjust. Pero pinapangako namin na after ng tournament na 'to, ibang team na kami," Silvestre said.

Sports: UPIS BVT endures UAAP Season 80 with perseverance

The University of the Philippines Boys Volleyball Team (UPIS BVT) progressed through the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 while they improved over the last matches at the Filoil Flying V Arena, San Juan City.

After a blistering chase against the University of Santo Tomas Boys Volleyball Team (UST BVT) at the beginning of the first period, the UPIS BVT was able to reel the scoreboard, 11-10, until the UST BVT finally decided to dash a 21-12.

UPIS BVT’s Ron Castro hammered multiple spikes to advance the team while Derick Urgena, Samuel Silvestre, and Dex Daguman shielded the net in the second period but they were still impeded from catching up with UST BVT with a score of 25-17.

Castro continued to pierce through UST BVT as the team amped up their defense in the last stretch but still received losing marks, 14-24.

In their following game held last November 8, a 17-17 draw triggered an explosive sprint for the Far Eastern University Boys’ Volleyball Team that resulted to another defeat for the UPIS BVT, 25-18, as errors continued to accumulate in the third set of the frame.

“For two months na nakapag-prepare sila, from that first day na nakita ko sila, sobrang layo na ng progress nila compared noong previous UPIS matches,” said UPIS BVT coach Hans Chuacuco.

“Mas mataas ang psychological approach ko sa players. Kasi for me, kapag balanse ang utak ng bata, mas madali kong napapa-improve at mapapadali ko sa kanila mapa-sink-in ang mga dapat nilang gawin,” he added.

The UPISBVT endured another loss last November 12, against the powerhouse, National University Squad. Even though the Bullpups swept them in 3 straight sets, the Junior Maroons still gave them a hard time.

The UPISBVT still have a chance to break their two-season drought in their last game against Ateneo de Manila University on November 15, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The team is also preparing for the Toby’s Junior Volleyball League this coming December.//by Julius Guevarra

Sports: Junior Maroons goes all out in Breakdown Invitationals but misses finals



The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Junior Maroons Basketball Team closed their semi-finals match with a loss, 62-72, against the English Christian Academy (ECA) in the Smart Breakdown Invitational Tournament 2017 last September 30 at the Moro Lorenzo Gym in Quezon City.

High scoring veteran guard Bryan Lina produced 23 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds to lead the Junior Maroons. Matt Santiago also chipped in 11 points but wasn’t enough to defeat ECA.

The team slowly built a 15-point head start in the 2nd and 3rd quarters but 3-point shots by the ECA shifted the momentum and gave a 10-point cushion for them in the 4th quarter, denying the Junior Maroons a chance to catch up.

Though the team failed to enter the finals, the Junior Maroons still showed their guns. Ralph Labao clinched the Best in Defense award while veteran Jaggie Gregorio earned a seat in the Mythical Five after his stellar performance throughout the tournament.

“It was a blessing, but I really thought a championship would’ve been better,” combo guard Gregorio said as he shared his bittersweet sentiments about the award.

Labao expressed his thoughts about the team’s points of improvement. “Siguro mag bonding pa, focus sa game, at wag intindihin yung score.”

The Junior Maroons also participated in the Philippine Chinese Association Basketball League (PCABL), where they achieved a 1-5 win-loss record, as another off-season preparation for Season 80 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) which begins on November 11. //by Blade Saliva and Julius Guevarra
