UPIS students place first in Youth In Action Case Competition



Three senior high school students of the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) won first place in the “Youth In Action (YIA) 2021: The Youth in Time of Crisis Case Study Competition” held online last February 27.

The team of Robert Ambat, Magan Basilio, and Justin Polendey of Batch 2021 was announced as the overall champion of the competition.

Youth In Action 2021: The Youth in Time of Crisis is a case study competition where teams were tasked to write a 3000-word case study addressing Brazil’s failed policies on Education, Healthcare, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The top 10 teams that passed the first screening presented their outputs through a pitch-style presentation and defended it in front of a panel of experts involved in the Philippines' COVID-19 response.

Most of their preparation involved extensive research into Brazil’s current state and the structure of their social institutions like their healthcare system, legislative processes, and government. The representatives also took a different approach with the case by studying certain countries that have been successful so far against the pandemic. They took insights from countries such as Taiwan, Thailand, Germany, New Zealand, and Greece to know what helped them succeed, how Brazil is different, and how they can apply these countries’ strategies in their proposed policies.

“Winning first place was actually a pleasant surprise. During the competition, our team encountered a lot of challenges due to the difficulty of the case and the feasibility of the proposals we were coming up with. I guess, more than winning, the experience taught me that the best solutions are not only innovative and creative, but are also grounded and cognizant of the constraints of reality. In fact, one of the judges commended our argumentation and understanding of the current situation in Brazil. We think our focus on building realistic solutions heavily based on the hard facts of the situation was what helped us succeed,” Ambat said.

The participants also attended a series of talks and educational discussions about the status of the Philippines’s COVID-19 response and how certain sectors are expected to respond and recover from the effects of the pandemic. //by Liane Bachini and Jemuell San Jose

Humakot ng medalya si Angel Ken Young ng 9-Neon sa World Robot Games 2021 na ginanap noong ika-25 ng Marso hanggang ika-15 ng Abril na may temang “New World After COVID”.

Nagkamit si Young ng 2 pilak at 8 tansong medalya sa kategoryang drop it, spoon feeding, fire fighting, this blows, balloon popping, shoot the ball, garbage collector, innovative, at line tracing. Taunang paligsahan ang World Robot Games, isang 1 minute game na sumusubok sa galing ng mga mag-aaral sa larangan ng robotics.

Nang tanungin si Young kung paano niya pinaghandaan ang paligsahan, narito ang kaniyang naging tugon “For about a month and a half, I [built] the 8 robots I used, (I used the same robot for shoot the ball and spoon feeding and the same one for fire fighting and this blows) kept having to rebuild robots to fit specifications, [and] did lots of research for innovative (it had sensors I have never used yet).” Idinagdag din niyang naging hamon sa kaniya ang paggamit ng iba't ibang editing applications dahil hindi pa siya ganoon kabihasa sa pag-eedit ng bidyo na kailangang mai-upload sa anumang online platforms.

Ayon kay Young, isa sa hindi niya malilimutang kaganapan sa kompetisyon ay ang balloon popping category. "I was sure I was screwed when I saw how fast Thailand was, but thankfully I was able to get an award because I managed to get a perfect run with my robot.” “Anyway tiwala lang, kasi you never know when something surprising will happen.”

Iska secures 1st runner-up spot in annual UPLB Genetics Camp



Joelle Victoria S. Catibog from Batch 2021 of the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) brought home 1st runner-up honors in the essay writing contest of the Genetics Camp 2021, held last April 10-11.

The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Genetics Society organized its first virtual Genetics Camp with the theme “BioenGENEers: Examining the Role of Recombinant DNA Technology Amidst Recent Challenges in Public Health.” Twelve students from UPIS Batch 2021 participated in the contests.

Among the participants in essay writing, Catibog claimed the second highest spot with her composition on the effect of vaccination on public health and how immunization works through it. According to Catibog, she participated in the event since she is interested in the field of bioengineering, and the theme dealt with the role of the field in addressing the public health crisis today.

Catibog mentioned that the Genetics Camp was a fun experience that allowed her to learn more about genetics through different talks and activities. During the first day, they talked about Mendelian genetics and heredity and on the second day, they visualized the interactions of the spike proteins and surface receptors of the cell.

When asked about what she would say to encourage other students to join future camps, she responded, “Attending camps such as this one is a great way to learn more about what you're interested in or to gain more knowledge about things that are new to you. If you have the opportunity to do so, don't hesitate to grab it!”

The camp held other interschool contests in addition to essay writing. The following students of Batch 2021 also participated in the contests: Maria Celine B. Morales in essay writing; Aya Brea P. Bundang and Krissie Marie Ebdane in poster making; Isabel B. Baclig, Gaudette Ann M. Garcia, Jhan Conrad R. Hermano, and Julia Anne A. Mapa in research proposal; and Roni Natalia Brianna P. Diokno Foundation Webinar-Workshop on Voters’ Education, inilunsad

Nagsagawa ng isang webinar-workshop ang Diokno Foundation sa mga mag-aaral ng UPIS mula sa Grado 11 at 12 tungkol sa voters’ education noong Marso 22, 2021.

Layunin ng webinar-workshop na bigyang-linaw ang kahalagahan ng pakikilahok ng kabataan sa eleksyon at mahikayat silang magparehistro at bumoto. Nais ng programang ito na maipakita ang kapangyarihan ng kabataan na makapamili ng mas magandang kinabukasan para sa kanilang sarili. Gayundin, malaki ang tiwala ng Foundation sa kakayahan ng mga mag-aaral na maimpluwensyahan ang kanilang mga kapamilya, at kasama sa komunidad na magparehistro at bumoto rin nang tama. .

“Sana nakatulong ito na ipaalala sa mga estudyante ng UPIS na nasa kamay nila hindi lang ‘yung future kundi ‘yung present ng ating bansa—na bilang kabataan, they have so much power, at sana gamitin nila ito para makabuo tayo ng mas patas, mas makatarungan, at mas makataong mundo.” saad ni Atty. Chel Diokno, anak ng dating Senator Jose W. Diokno, nang makapanayam ito.

Ayon naman kay Prop. Diana G. Caluag, Katuwang na Prinsipal Pang-Akademiko, “Nagpapasalamat ang UP Integrated School sa adbokasiya ng Diokno Foundation na bigyan ng empowerment ang mga kabataan. Sa pamamagitan ng mga ganitong gawain, kahit may pandemya, patuloy nilang binubuhay ang diwa ng pagiging Pilipino sa mga mag-aaral. Sana ay mas maraming paaralan pa ang kanilang maging partners.”

Ang Diokno Foundation ay isang non-government organization na itinayo para ipagpatuloy ang nasimulang adbokasiya ni late Senator Jose W. Diokno, isang abogado, senador, at kabilang sa mga nakulong noong Martial Law. Isinasabuhay ng organisasyon ang mga adhikaing sinimulan ng dating senador sa pamamagitan ng research at publication, social development work, at edukasyon. START-UPis launches small beginnings through an online business conference

"We make new beginnings for START-UPis."

Students from UPIS Batch 2022’s Business and Entrepreneurship (BE) track were one step closer to realizing this promise as they hosted START-UPis, an online business conference, on Monday, April 19, 2021 via a Zoom meeting with fellow track members and UPIS teachers.

The conference was a one-day event where the B&E students, divided into groups, presented their respective start-up businesses. They also introduced their companies and products to a panel that includes company owners and franchise holders.

The panelists who evaluated the students’ presentations are: Mrs. Nanette Abreu, managing director of KFM Marketing; Mr. Rollen Inoncillio, RBU Head of the Red Ribbon Bakeshop Inc.; Jose Marti Bartolome, the proprietor of Marti Bartolome Photography and consultant for the Coffee Science Center; Mrs. Tanya Grace Jamon-Navarro and Mr. Nino Andrelix Navarro, owners of Karne Est. 1999; Mrs. Katherine Jamon, co-owner of Greener Option, a package-free store; and Mr. Daniel Cuasay, owner of the MCSC Commissary and Link Clothing Boutique and franchise owner of Julie’s Bakeshop.

Five groups participated in the business conference. CEOs, or leaders of the groups, were tasked to pitch their respective products and services, SWOT analysis and market segmentation, and their marketing strategies, which the panelists evaluated.

Some participants shared new takes on Asian delicacies, such as mango sticky rice from Mang Adlai PH, and taho, revolutionized with various flavors from the company Ohat+. Others showcased their skills and talents in digital design and crafting. For example, Siragara Designs offers graphic designing services such as developing logos. Res in Piece is a company that provides aesthetic resin craft designs such as bookmarks and coasters. Last but not least, Artistic Visions is an events management company that brings celebrations to the online world.

The CEOs of each company also shared their feelings and how they handled the preparations leading up to their presentations. According to Justin Abreu, CEO of Mang Adlai PH, he felt pressured since it was the first virtual business conference at UPIS. He also thanked Prof. Kristina Jamon and Prof. Joe Ferrer, the learning coordinator and program adviser, respectively, of the BE track of 2022 for their help and guidance.

“It was very challenging since online and mahirap makipag-usap sa mga groupmates and all, pero at least lahat naman naki-cooperate and nakatulong. Lahat nagbigay ng ideas nila on how we can improve our product,” Abreu stated.

“Masaya at nakakapagod, maraming preparations kami ginawa 1 week before the conference itself kaya medyo drained kami sa linggo na ‘yun. Marami rin kaming natutunan sa pag-mamanage ng business at yung mga kailangan ayusin para sa conference,” Warrick Castillo, CEO of Ohat+, shares. “Overall magandang experience siya lalo na makabuluhan yung mga comments na natanggap namin mula sa mga panelists pati experience na rin sa pagprepresent sa harap ng maraming tao.”

Komunidad ng UP, umaksyon kontra sa COVID-19



Umaksyon ang komunidad ng UP laban sa COVID-19 dahil sa patuloy na pagtaas ng bilang ng mga nagpopositibo sa virus.

Ayon sa UP Diliman COVID-19 Task Force Weekly Report noong buwan ng Abril, umabot sa 138 ang mga aktibong kaso ng COVID-19 sa loob ng UP Diliman at Barangay UP Campus.

Bilang tugon ng unibersidad sa tumataas na kaso ng COVID-19, inilunsad nito at ng lokal na pamahalaan ng Lungsod ng Quezon ang “Bakunahan sa Diliman.” Kasalukuyan itong idinaraos sa College of Human Kinetics (CHK).

Maliban sa vaccination program ng Pamunuan ng Unibersidad at ng Local Government, tumugon din sa suliraning ito ang iba’t ibang kolehiyo at tanggapan sa loob ng campus.

Ang UP Law Center halimbawa, ay naglunsad ng isang webinar na pinamagatang “Bakuna Para sa Masa - A webinar on Vaccine Misinformation and Hesitancy, and the Vaccination Program of the National Government” noong ika-24 ng Abril. Layunin nitong makapagbahagi ng tamang impormasyon tungkol sa COVID-19 vaccines at muling bigyang-diin ang kahalagahan ng tungkulin ng bawat isa sa pagsugpo sa COVID-19.

Sa pangunguna naman ng All UP Workers Union (AUPWU), nagkaroon ng community pantry malapit sa kanilang opisina. Kasama nila sa inisyatibong ito ang University Hotel Workers Union, Samahan ng Manggagawa sa Quezon City, at Alyansa ng Samahan Diliman. Patuloy pa rin sa pagbibigay ng tulong at suporta sa mga residente ng UP Diliman ang nasabing pantry.

Sa UP Integrated School, nagpaabot ng tulong at suporta ang mga alumni at iba pang organisasyon sa kanilang mga dating guro at sa mga kasalukuyang estudyante para sa remote learning set-up.

Kabilang sa mga naghandog ng tulong ay ang Batch 2011 na naglunsad ng kanilang programang “Iskomunidad: A fundraiser for UP Communities,” bilang selebrasyon ng kanilang ika-10 taong anibersaryo. Layunin ng programa na magbigay tulong sa mga UPIS staffs, UP vendors, UP guards, UP ikot drivers, at community pantries.

OVPAA responds to OSR’s appeal



The Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of the Philippines, Dr. Maria Cynthia Rose Banzon Bautista, responded to the Office of the Student Regent’s (OSR) letter appealing for the easing of academic requirements last April 18.

In a letter to the OSR, the Vice President addressed the previous concerns raised by the OSR in their April 12 correspondence in regards to the University’s policies related to remote teaching and learning including stringent deadlines, academic requirements, optional attendance for synchronous classes, reading break, and no-fail policy or drop.

Dr. Bautista made clear that no student shall receive a grade of 4 or 5 for the second half of the current academic year, although it is still possible for a faculty to drop a student whose performance is below par.

Furthermore, given the circumstances the students currently face, the letter instructs faculty to grant consideration to its students who are unable to meet deadlines and to allow them to submit work until the end of the semester.

The letter also said that the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) will remind faculty of existing academic policies such as not requiring attendance in synchronous classes and not assigning requirements and implementing deadlines during the reading break, as it is supposed to be a time for both faculty and students to catch up on their work or get their much-needed rest.

“Our students’ wellness is paramount. As the country's National University, we will make every effort to ensure that they will thrive during these challenging times,” said Vice President Bautista in her letter.

To reaffirm what was stated in Dr. Bautista’s reply to the OSR, she issued on the following day Memorandum 2021-61, formalizing her earlier stand that “surviving the challenges of life and work in the midst of a crisis… entails the steadfast support of a caring academic community that kindly watches out for its members.” //by Kyla Francia and Dan Pagsibigan

Nasubok muli ang bayanihan ng mga Isko nang nanalasa ang bagyong Ulysses.

Inilunsad ng UPIS ang isang donation drive na pinamagatang “Lingap Isko 2020” noong Nobyembre 13, 2020. Layunin nitong mag-abot ng tulong sa mga kasamahan o miyembro ng UPIS Community na lubhang naapektuhan ng bagyo. 

Sa pag-uugnayan ng Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Board at UPIS Administration, sinikap na alamin kung sino-sino ang pamilyang naapektuhan, at pagkaraan ay lumikom ng mga tulong na donasyon.

Kabilang sa mga natanggap na in-kind donations ang mga pagkain, supplies, at tulong-pinansiyal na nagkakahalagang Php 178,585.00. Bukod pa rito ang cash donation mula sa PTA 2020-2021. Nakalap ang mga ito hanggang Nobyembre 23 na inilaan para sa bawat pamilyang naapektuhan ng bagyo. 

Ang paunang tulong-pinansiyal mula sa PTA ay naipadala na noong Nobyembre 16. Kasunod nito, naipamahagi rin noong Nobyembre 23 at 24 ang in-kind donations at cash donations sa 29 na pamilya ng mga mag-aaral, guro, staff, at custodians. 

Pagkatapos maipamahagi ang mga donasyon ay nakatanggap muli ang Lingap Isko ng karagdagang cash donation na nagkakahalagang Php 24,000.00 mula sa isang donor at sa Project Ngiti, isang proyektong pinangunahan ng ilang mag-aaral ng UP High School. Gagamitin ang halagang ito para sa mga donation drive na gaganapin sa hinaharap. 

“Lubos ang pasasalamat ng UPIS sa mga mag-aaral, mga magulang, guro, at kawani para sa lahat ng uri ng tulong sa proyekto. Taos-pusong pasasalamat din sa UPIS PTA 2020-2021, sa pangunguna nina Mrs. Anne Mapa [Pangulo ng PTA Board] at Mrs. Charo Abogado [ingat-yaman ng PTA Board.] Ang naging tugon ng UPIS Community sa proyekto ay patunay na kahit tayo ay nasa gitna ng isang pandemya, buhay na buhay ang diwa ng paglingap para sa ating mga kasama hindi lamang sa UPIS, kundi sa lahat ng nangangailangan,” saad ni Prop. Lumahok si Justin Aaron Polendey ng Grado 12-Katotohanan sa 2020 International Youth Virtual Symposium on Urban Heritage ng Taipei City Walkers sa pamamagitan ng Google Meet noong ika-24 at ika-25 ng Oktubre.

Pangunahing layunin ng symposium na magkaroon ng koneksyon ang mga mag-aaral mula sa iba't ibang bahagi ng mundo sa kabila ng pandemya. Nais din nitong makapagpalitan ng kaalaman ang mga kalahok tungkol sa urban heritage at upang yakapin ng bawat isa ang lokal na kultura ng kani-kanilang rehiyon.

Sa presentasyon ni Polendey na pinamagatang "A Peek Inside Intramuros", tinalakay niya ang kasaysayan at kahalagahan ng nabanggit na lugar. Nagbigay rin siya ng maikling tour ng ilan sa mga pinakatanyag na destinasyon sa Intramuros. 

“I didn't want to rely on online sources too much so I mostly looked for and read yung mga papers na naglalaman ng relevant information about Intramuros. In the end, gumamit din ako ng online sources to supplement the information that I had gathered pero most of my info came from papers such as Intramuros: The Story of the Philippines by Jon Malek. For the pictures, I had to rely on other people and online sources,” tugon ni Polendey nang tanungin tungkol sa kung paano siya naghanda para sa symposium.

Ayon pa sa kanya, hindi niya malilimutan ang mismong presentasyon na kanyang ginawa dahil ito ang naging kasukdulan ng lahat ng preparasyon at naipresenta niya ito sa harap ng ilan pang mag-aaral sang-ayon sa kanyang hangarin. “Yung interesting na aral na natutunan ko is how heritage sites are able to tell the stories of their respective cultures and how they can evoke memories of past events and the feelings associated with these events. Areas, especially urban areas, are continuously undergoing rapid changes and developments and heritage is able to help ang isang community to maintain yung sense of identity nila in an ever-changing world. It must be noted din na heritage doesn't specifically have to be in the form of physical sites,” dagdag ni Polendey. //ni Jailyn Abby Lim

UPIS students receive gadget donations for online classes

As of October 5, 2020, various devices and gadgets were donated to University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) students to aid in classes conducted through remote learning.

There were a total of 110 tablets, 58 laptops, 23 WiFi packages, six desktop computers, and two netbooks donated. Donations came in from alumni of UPIS Batches 1986, 1970, 1995, 1975, 1993, and 1994, the Philippine Cabin Crew Charities Inc. (PCCCI), the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI), the UPIS Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), students, and other anonymous donors.

The donations were distributed to the students with the help of representatives from the PTA, Batch 1995 alumni, and other batches. 

When asked why they chose to donate to UPIS, the PSRTI responded, “UPIS is known for its high-quality education given to young students. It is also a public school in need of additional equipment considering the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to go online teaching.(sic)”

Mrs. Aida Padua, a founding member of the PCCCI, said they were approached by the Committee on Scholarships for donations. PCCCI and the committee regularly communicate regarding their scholars. No fundraising event was held for the donations, their only request was that scholars who lack gadgets for online learning must be prioritized during distribution.

When asked to give a message for students, Mrs. Padua advised them to take care of their gadgets, study very well, and make their benefactors proud. She even adds, “If you have an opportunity to help anyone, whoever they are, extend that help… You will never know if you are the angel that God sent to help that person. And your kindness will be returned a thousandfold.” //by Franz Joves

UPIS students place first in TGCC regionals



Four senior high school students of the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) took the winning title in the regional round of the Tiger Global Case Competition (TGCC), which was held online last September 19.

The team of Robert Ambat, Lester Amurao, and Magan Basilio (Batch 2021) and Ameer Fernandez (Batch 2022) was announced as the top one group of the South and Southeast Asian Region of TGCC.

TGCC is an international competition organized by Crimson Education in partnership with Tiger Global Market. The competition aims to bring the business-case experience to high school students around the world and help them develop their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

For the regional round, they were tasked to come up with an expansion strategy for Autonomous Control Systems Laboratory (ACSL), a drone company based in Japan. A live question-and-answer session with ACSL’s Chief Financial Officer was also hosted to give the participants an opportunity to get to know the company more. They were given two weeks to prepare for the regional case presentation.

“Winning from the regional rounds was actually a surprise for us! We only focused on doing our best and making the most out of this experience through the workshops and resources they gave us. We put our heart into making the best strategy we could think of and we're absolutely glad that the judges were able to connect with our sincerity in proposing that solution. After that, we were already more than happy to be working alongside mentors and fellow finalists as we challenged ourselves again in the globals. Undoubtedly, my best takeaway from this was the experience in honing various skills and working with such amazing teammates that were engaged every step of the way.” Ambat said

“Obviously, I didn’t expect that we would win as I had no background in business and went into it only with the intention of learning new things. When we won, I thought that this is probably the biggest thing I’ve won in life so far. This experience will definitely be something I can reminisce about when I’m old.” Fernandez said.

"It was an honor competing against amazing representatives from so many countries. I definitely learned a lot from the experience of attending the workshops and working with my team," Basilio said.

The team enjoyed and learned a lot from the competition and was thankful for the experience they gained. “My teammates were nothing short of remarkable and smart talaga. They are the best legit hands down!” Amurao said.

One of the challenges they had was compressing their presentation because of the limited number of slides and time given. After the regional round, they had workshops with their mentors Clara Tusin and Newfel Drahmoune from ESSEC Business School where they got the chance to have a mock case to prepare them for the global round that happened on October 10. // by Liane Bachini

Kasalukuyang idinaraos ng Applied Sciences & Engineering Track (ASE) Batch 2021 ang isang donation drive na pinamagatang “Clash for a Cause.” 

Sinimulan ang drive noong Oktubre 3 kung saan inanunsyo sa kanilang UPIS AppSci Twitter and Facebook page ang tungkol sa kanilang adhikain. Magtatapos ang naturang gawain ngayong darating na Oktubre 31.

Sa pagbuo ng kanilang donation drive, kumuha ang ASE ng inspirasyon mula sa “Clash”, isang event na kanilang pinamunuan sa nagdaang UPIS Fair.

Layunin nitong matulungan ang mga mag-aaral sa UPIS na matugunan ang kanilang mga pangangailangan para sa online learning setup. Ang halagang malilikom ay ibibigay bilang donasyon sa Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Fund na ipambibili ng mga kagamitang kailangan ng mga mag-aaral. Isinusulong din sa naturang gawain ang adbokasiyang #NoStudentLeftBehind.

Upang makapanghikayat na magbigay ng donasyon, nagdaos din sila ng paligsahan sa larong League of Legends na binuksan para sa lahat ng mag-aaral at Alumni ng UPIS. Ginanap ang paligsahan gamit ang double elimination format kung saan binibigyan ng isa pang pagkakataon ang mga natalong koponan bago sila tuluyang mawala sa paligsahan.

Nakatanggap ng Php 300.00 ang grupong Imagine Losing (UWU) na binubuo nina Chi Agapito, Jason Amor, Yuri Bustamante, Kim Gabriel at Karl Vergel ng Batch 2024. Sina Aldrich Agad, RL Calayan, Blaine Cosico at Ronnel Fernando mula sa Batch 2021 kasama si Jastin Cruz ng Batch 2020 naman ng grupong Nighthawx (NH) ang nagkamit ng unang gantimpala na nakatanggap ng Php 700.00. 

Bukod sa pagdaraos ng paligsahan, nakipagtulungan din ang ASE sa negosyo ng ilang mag-aaral at Alumni ng UPIS. Kabillang dito ang Cream n’ Crumble, Layer’d MNL, Chef Eko’s Makizushi, Raincelets by Rain Fagela Tiangco, The Baking Lounge PH, at The Heirloom Oven na magbibigay ng bahagi ng kanilang kinikita sa donation drive habang idinaraos ito.

UPIS implements changes for AY 2020-2021



The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) officially began the new school year in the remote platform last October 5. 

Due to the pandemic, synchronous classes for Academic Year 2020-2021 are conducted via Zoom and asynchronous activities are given on Google Classroom.

The UPIS community also officially welcomed the school’s new Principal, Prof. Anthony Joseph C. Ocampo, and the new members of the administration namely Prof. Diana G. Caluag, Asst. Principal for Academic Programs (APAP); Prof. Margaret D. Atela, Asst. Principal for Administration (APA); and Prof. Sarah B. Gonzales, head of the Office of Research, Development, and Publication (ORDP).

Prof. Angela Ray A. Nieva (K-2), Prof. Czarina A. Twayana (Social Studies), Prof. Michelle S. Sonza (Mathematics), and Mrs. Mary Grace D.P. Espinosa (Student Services) are the new department heads who are part of the Executive Committee this AY. 

There are also new faculty members who teach Practical Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Health and Physical Education. 

Enrollment was done on August 17 to 25 through the new system for online registration, implemented in accordance with government protocols. Grade level student orientations were held from September 9 to 16 to introduce their subjects, teachers, and guidelines for remote learning. 

After a month of classes, a campus-wide reading break will be held on November 3 to 6 and the PTA General Assembly will be held on November 7. // by Jelena Evangelista and Magan Basilio

Pilipinas, tuloy ang laban kontra COVID-19



Inanusyo ng Department of Health (DOH) nitong Abril 8, 2020 ang 106 na bagong kaso ng COVID-19 dito sa bansa kaya’t pumalo na ang bilang nito sa 3,870.

Umakyat na rin ang bilang ng mga namatay dahil sa sakit sa 182 ngunit nadagdagan naman ang mga gumaling na ngayon ay 96 na katao na.

Ang unang kaso ng COVID-19 dito sa bansa ay naitala noong Enero ngunit nagsimula ang mabilis na pagdami ng kaso noong Marso. Nagpatupad ng Metro Manila Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) noong Marso 15 at kalauna’y naging Luzon lockdown, na naunang ibinalitang nakatakdang matapos sa Abril 14, 2020. Gayunpaman binanggit ni Cabinet Secretary ng Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Karlo Nograles na inaprubahan ni President Duterte ang rekomendasyon ng Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) na ipagpatuloy ang lockdown hanggang Abril 30, 2020.

Marami ang sang-ayon sa naturang ekstensyon. Isa na rito ang pangalawang pangulo na si Vice President Leni Robredo na sinabi sa isang interview sa ANC na “Sang-ayon ako (ipagpatuloy ang lockdown) dahil ‘yong nakikita natin na mga projections, makabubuti para i-flatten ‘yong curve kung hahabaan pa ito, pero tingin ko kasi crucial, crucial para mag-cooperate ‘yong mga tao, crucial na naiintindihan nila kung bakit kailangan ‘tong gawin. Kasi kapag hindi nila naiintidihan kung bakit kailangan ‘tong gawin, ‘yong resistance nandiyan.”

UPIS, nag-uwi ng unang gantimpala sa SSP Summit 2020

Nagwagi ang grupo nina Aldric de Ocampo at Gabe Ulanday ng UPIS Batch 2020 kasama sina Angela Yap, Samuel Blasco at Janna Ladao ng Integrated Montessori Center sa taunang Social Sciences and Philosophy (SSP) Summit na ginanap noong Marso 7, 2020 sa National College of Public Administration and Governance Building, UP Diliman.

Ang SSP Summit 2020 ay isang programa para sa mga mag-aaral sa hasykul na nakapokus sa pagtalakay ng mga usaping panlipunan. Halos 100 na mag-aaral mula sa iba’t ibang paaralan ang lumahok dito. May mga tagapagsalitang nagbahagi at nagtalakay ng mga isyung panlipunan kagaya ng pilosopiya at karapatang pantao, ugnayan ng sikolohiya at kalusugang pangkaisipan, at marami pang iba.

Nagmula kay de Ocampo ang "Tarok" bilang titulo sa inihain nilang proposal. Ayon sa kanya, “Nag-isip lang ako ng malalim na kahulugan ng “to think” or “to understand” upang maging catchy ang aming concept,” kuwento niya.

Pangunahing layunin nito na mas mapalalim pa ang mga kaalaman ng mga mag-aaral sa senior high tungkol sa iba’t ibang paksa sa Agham Panlipunan sa pamamagitan ng mga panayam ukol sa mga isyung panlipunan at mga paligsahan na sumubok sa kanilang pagkamalikhain. Layunin din nitong linangin ang kanilang mapanuring pag-iisip at literasiyang pangmidya.

Planong gawing long-term ang proyekto kaya’t bahagi nito ang paghingi ng pondo mula sa Department of Education (DepEd) at Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Hihingi rin ng pondo mula sa Department of Health (DOH) dahil isa sa mga misyon nitong maprotektahan ang kalusugang pangkaisipan ng mga mag-aaral.

Dagdag pa ni de Ocampo, “Natutuwa akong naipamalas namin ang aming kakayahan, ng mga mag-aaral at kabataan sa pakikibahagi sa mga isyung panlipunan. Sa pamamagitan kasi ng mga adbokasiya, ang mga pangarap natin ay pwede talaga nating makamit. Kung nanalo kami sa paligsahan nang ‘di namin inaasahan, sa tingin ko may pag-asa rin tayong magtagumpay bilang lipunan ng mga tao at mga Pilipino.” //ni Gabby Arevalo

UP Cherubim and Seraphim dazzle concert audience with angelic voices

The UP Cherubim and Seraphim left their audience in awe with their performances in their yearly concert, entitled: Come Alive last March 7 at the UP Abelardo Hall.

The choir, mostly made up of UPIS students and alumni with current students of the UP College of Music, underwent rigorous training under the supervision of choirmaster Prof. Emeritus Elena Rivera Mirano and assistant choirmaster Alyssa Liyana Dioquino.

Members embodied the tagline "Come one, Come all" through their performances funded by the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA). This year's theme, namely unity, friendship, and courage were showcased through their concert pieces that ranged from Broadway Musicals to Filipino, European, and Japanese songs among many others. During the concert new apprentices for the UP Cherubim and Seraphim were also introduced.

Every aspect of each performance was perfected through months of workshop since September last year. Members spent hours extensively practicing every pitch and note to perfection.

Graduating member Cyñl Tecson felt both ecstatic and sad to have finished the concert.
"I felt very sad, the thought of it being my last concert after six long years performing with the choir was heartbreaking. Other than the fact that I was leaving a choir, I was also leaving my family [fellow choirmates]..."

Cancelation of classes amidst COVID-19 scare



Last Monday, March 9, 2020, the Malacañang Palace declared the suspension of classes in the National Capital Region (NCR), starting March 10 until 14, because of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) threat.

Adhering to the announcement, new University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) Chancellor, Fidel R. Nemenzo,DSc, sent a message to the UPD’s faculty, REPS, researchers, residents, staff, and students through the academe’s Facebook account: UP Diliman.

The post contains his approval on the Palace’s directive. Also, rules and regulations, created by the Chancellor in cooperation with University Health Service and the UP Philippine General Hospital (PGH), which should be followed by UP Diliman constituents are included in his message. On the following day, March 10, the UP Diliman Health Service (UPHS) declared 2 faculty members of UPD as patients under investigation (PUIs) for COVID-19. It is said that the 2 PUIs, who went to Japan for an academic conference, voluntarily submitted themselves to the UPHS.

Following the Malacañang pronouncement, Prof. Rachel Ramirez, UPIS’ Assistant Principal for Academic Programs (APAP), announced the suspension of classes and off-campus internship on March 10 to 14. Also, the 3rd Quarter periodic test has been moved to March 19 and 20 from its original dates March 12 and 13. Everyone was also reminded to keep safe.

In a most recent announcement on March 11, the APAP announced through a Facebook post the postponement of all school-related events including the Junior-Senior (JS) Prom until further notice. She also asked everyone to wait for additional announcements in the following days. //by Reneil Grimaldo

Trinity University of Asia, nagdaos ng career talk

Nilahukan ng mga mag-aaral mula Grado 11 at 12 ang dalawang araw na career talk sa pangunguna ng Trinity University of Asia noong Pebrero 18 sa Guidance Testing Room, at Pebrero 20 sa Audio-visual Room ng UPIS 7-12 Building.

Layunin ng talk na ipakilala ang Trinity University of Asia bilang isa sa mga paaralan na maaaring pagpilian at pasukan ng mga mag-aaral sa kolehiyo, gayundin ang mga kursong maaari nilang kunin sa nasabing institusyon.

Naging tagapagsalita para sa Batch 2021 at mga mag-aaral ng Business Track ng Batch 2020 sina Dr. Pong Trinidad, Dr. Ferdinand Bunag, Dr. Rufo Agarrao, at si Bb. Jinky Gamit. Pinalitan naman ni G. Caleb Coniante si Dr. Bunag bilang tagapagsalita para sa mga mag-aaral ng Applied Sciences and Engineering Track ng Batch 2020.

“Maganda ang programa dahil nag-i-introduce siya ng other options for us sa college. It’s a nice introduction, pero siyempre kailangan pa rin mag-research about the school, ask about their curriculum, scholarships, etc.” saad ni Julianne Sasing, isang kinatawan mula sa Applied Sciences and Engineering Track ng Grado 11.

“Sobrang nakakatulong para sa ‘kin iyon dahil pinapakita nila na marami pang choices kung anong course ang pwede mong kunin sa college at maraming options din kung saan ka pwede mag-aral if may pino-promote sila na schools, especially if may certain field ka na gusto. It taught me to be more open to be in other schools at ‘wag lang isipin na dapat nasa UP or any of the Big 4 universities ka lang mag-aral para maging successful ang iyong life and career kasi who knows, mas maganda ang oppotunities pala sa iba.” saad ni Kayla Vega, isang kinatawan mula sa Applied Sciences and Engineering Track ng Grado 12. //ni Danzar Dellomas

Nanalo ang bandang "Raketship" sa Battle of the Bands (BOTB) na may temang "Hiwaga" na ginanap sa UPIS Quadrangle noong Pebrero 13, 2020.

Itinanghal na kampeon ang bandang binubuo nina Gio Capili, Eowyn Surigao, Allana DelaCruz, John Christian Caparas, Ejaz Pupos, at Liam Caño mula Grado 9. Ito ang una nilang beses na pagsali sa BOTB kung saan kinanta nila ang Still Into You ng Paramore at Huling Sayaw ng Kamikazee.

Nakipagtagisan din sa pagtugtog ang mga bandang Blue Moon, Alitaptap, Revitalize the Broken, at Eliptikal Road.

Nakuha ng bandang Revitalize the Broken ang ikatlong gantimpala. Samantala, inuwi naman ng Eliptikal Rd. ang ikalawang gantimpala at ang People’s Choice Award.

Nagsilbing hurado sa patimpalak sina G. Leujim Martinez, G. Carlos Calderon at si Bb. Zsaris Mendioro.

Habang hinihintay ang pag-aanunsyo ng mga nagwagi, nagkaroon ng mga pagtatanghal mula sa ilang guest performers. Kabilang dito sina Bb. Mendioro na isang singer-songwriter, beatboxer, live loop, at artist na tinaguriang one-woman-band, gayundin ang Shirebound and Busking na singer-songwriter ng album na may titulong "For Princesses, By Thieves” (O Mga Awit ng Hiraya para sa Guni-guning Sinta).

Hindi rin nagpahuli ang mga guest performers mula sa UPIS tulad ng ELKS, 4 Kings, at ang back-to-back champions ng BOTB na Prizmo.

"Nung pagbaba po namin ng stage di po ako makapaniwala sa lahat ng mga bumati sa'min, napaka-grateful ko po sa lahat ng mga sumuporta sa aming banda, parang nananaginip po ako nung gabi na yun at hinding-hindi ko po siya malilimutan. ‘Yun po yung unang BOTB ko kaya di ko po inasahan na mag-pi-place kami, much less mananalo, pero nais ko rin pong sabihin na wala nang hihigit pa sa mga napakalupet na taong nakasama ko sa entablado noong gabi na iyon." saad ni DelaCruz. //ni Rochelle Gandeza

MC Live brings summer in February

This year's MC Live was fun and colorful. The pom-poms hanging from the ceiling matched the backdrop on the stage. The music chosen by the performers made the audience feel summer vibes. The selection of different snacks and drinks from the concessionaires are perfect examples of how summer should be.

The MC Live Summer Fest 4 which was held at the 3-6 Bulwagan last February 12, 2020 started at 5 PM and ended at 8 PM.

As usual, the night's program had different performances. There were bands from batch 2021 such as the Titos, The Wednesdays, and Out of Time that used their own styles in performing song covers.

Various solo performers had different talents to show. Keanne Nuevas, or Key Key, sang two original songs while Aldrich Agad, from The Wednesdays, sang two of his. Keio Guzman and Katerina Cuerdo each showed their skills with guitar-accompanied performances. Erika Sasazawa showed her ballet prowess with an emotion-filled performance. Manu Labor also shared three of his lovely original poems.

Concessionaires from different batches, including an alumna, made appearances to sell all kinds of snacks and drinks and print out photo booth pictures. MC2020 also offered a renting service for stuffed toys to make the audience’s MCLive experience even cozier.

Near the end of the event was an open mic where anyone who wasn’t able to make it to the performer auditions could conquer the stage and show off their talent. Band performances like Alitaptap from Batch 2022, Four Kings from Batch 2020, and an on-the-spot band composed of Renz Emperador, Esha Catiis, Dean Cabrera, and Sam Arinto from Batch 2023 were heard. Nicole Panganiban and Lea Lagunilla from Batch 2021 also performed as a duo.

Aside from the regular raffle where the prizes were snacks and school supplies, a special raffle based on the serial number of a twenty-peso bill had Darren Taller bring home two tickets to the UP Fair Revolution for the following Saturday. //by Franz Joves
