Alimuong, pagbibidahan ng FD 2015

Nilalayon ng Filipino Drama (FD) 2015 na masagot ang katanungang iyan sa kanilang taunang produksyon na “Alimuong,” bukas Marso 26 sa ganap na alas-diyes ng umaga sa UPIS Auditorium.

Ang “Alimuong”, na nasa direksyon nina Noelle Lumbre at Jesica Caneca, ay tungkol sa isang pamilya na maraming pinagdaanang pagsubok sa buhay. Bawat isa sa kanila ay may iba’t-ibang personalidad na magiging dahilan ng away, gulo, at susubok sa kanilang pagiging matatag.

“Pinaghirapan ng FD ang produksyong ito dahil ipinapakita nila ang kanilang talento sa pag-arte. Gusto nilang ibahagi ang kakaibang mensahe ng kuwento,” ayon kay Lumbre.

Inaanyayahan nila ang lahat na manood ng dulang itinuturing nilang magiging “legacy” ng FD 2015 sa UPIS. Mabibili ang tiket sa halagang 50 Php na makukuha sa kahit na sinong miyembro ng FD.

Feature: Carlo the Pogi



“Nagjogging lang naman ako kanina. Pagtingin ko sa likod ko naging fun run na. Hays, ang hirap talaga maging pogi.” #PogiProblems

Si Carlo. Isa lamang siya sa mga ordinaryong estudyante na nakikita mo araw-araw sa UPIS, ngunit bakit pinagkakaguluhan siya ng mga tao?

Minsan, kapag nakasalubong mo siya sa mga corridor ng UPIS 7-10 Building, magkakaroon ka ng pagkakataon upang mag-hello sa kanya o kahit sumaludo. At siyempre, dahil mabait si Carlo, kakamustahin ka pabalik. May mga pogi na artista tulad nina Jericho Rosales, Piolo Pascual at Daniel Padilla, pero ibang klase ang kapogian ni Carlo. Iilang tao lamang sa buong mundo ang may tapang na sumuot ng lampin lang at maglakad sa school, isa na si Carlo doon. Astig ‘di ba?

Madalas mo siyang makikita na may neon green bag sa school o kaya’y naglalaro ng basketball sa may court. “Ball is life” ika nga. “Madalas nakangiti, madaling lapitan, masayang kasama” – ito ang impresyon na nakukuha niya mula sa mga tao sa tuwing nakikita nila si Carlo.

Simpleng tao lamang si Carlo. Ibang klase nga lang ang yabang niya – yung tipong hindi nakakasakit sa mga tao – in fact, nakakahawa pa. Lagi niyang sinasambit ang mga ‘words of wisdom’ sa mga taong nangangailangan. Hindi rin niya alam kung paano siya naging pogi. “Basta paggising ko na lang, ang alam ko sobrang pogi ko na. At hindi ako nagyayabang”, ang kanyang sabi.

Nitong kakatapos lang na Parangal ay pinarangalan siya ng titulong “Pinakatanyag na Pogi sa Akademikong Taon 2014-2015”

At sa kanyang nalalapit na pag-graduate mula sa UPIS, hinding-hindi malilimutan ng mga tao ang mga naging kontribusyon sa paaralan. Bilang pasasalamat, handing magbigay si Carlo ng mga grad pics sa mga nais humingi. Lumapit lang kayo sa kanya, at siguradong bibigyan ka niya. / ni Julou Tirol

Junior Maroons loses thriller game, drops to 1-6

The UPIS Junior Maroons lost a close contest against the Adamson Baby Falcons, 56-50, to close out the first round of Season 77 with a 1-6 record last December 20 at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

Third year wingman Allane Barles led the charge for the Maroons with his 13-point output. Jaggie Gregorio and Bryan Lina provided support by adding 11 and 7 points respectively.

The Junior Maroons succumbed to the Baby Falcons’ hot shooting in the first half where they trailed, 30-18, at the halftime break.

Adamson extended its lead to 19 as they unleashed an 8-1 run with more than six minutes remaining in the third.

UPIS then bounced back and staged a furious 13-4 run to end the third quarter and close the gap at 36-45.

Both teams struggled to score in the first few minutes of the fourth and final quarter. Junior Maroons’ Coach Allan Gregorio was slapped with a Technical Foul in the 7-minute mark because of his violent reaction to a non-call on a missed Barles layup.

The Junior Maroons nonetheless were not fazed as the younger Gregorio sparked another spectacular run by the Maroons which brought them to within one, at 49-50, with around two minutes remaining.

That was the closest they could get, however, as the breaks of the game in the dying seconds went in favour of the Baby Falcons, thus securing their win.

The Junior Maroons has lost six straight games after winning their first assignment against UE.

UPIS celebrates Wonderland in CA EMA Week 2014

Students, teachers, and staff found fantasy in reality in the CA English, Music, and Art (CA EMA) week festivities held last November 18-21.

Dubbed Wonderland: Finding Fantasy in Reality, the week-long celebration was formally opened on November 18 with Skits of Freenia, a presentation by the English Club to introduce Alice in Wonderland which is the inspiration for this year’s theme.

It concluded with the much-awaited Literally Literary Day (LLD) held on November 20. Students dressed up as characters from various literary works and presented spiels in English class. Each section chose two representatives to compete in the LLD contest later that afternoon.

Angelia Albao of 7-Mars who dressed up as Queen Susan of Narnia, Wenona Catubig of 8-Dragonfly who portrayed an exorcised girl, Marianne Sasing of 9-Iron as Elphaba of Wicked, and Miguei Abogado of 10-Lauan as Thor were crowned as winners of the competition.

Other CA EMA Week activities were DEAR Day, Poem-Letter Exchange, and Spelling Bee.

The best spellers from each grade level competed in teams last November 21. The team of Macky Barrientos (10-Acacia), Adrian Bornilla (9-Silver), Ezra Bustamante (8-Butterfly), and James Tolosa (7-Saturn) won the championship in the tiebreaker round versus the team of Katreena Nulud (10-Molave), Chesca Santiago (9-Gold), Craig Aquino (8-Dragonfly), and JP Coronado (7-Venus).


The faculty and staff also took part in the CA EMA Week activities by showcasing their talents in the 7th installment of Rhyme, Rhythm, and Reason also held on November 21. / by Raine Abaya and Julou Tirol
