Ginanap noong Setyembre 24 ang National Finals ng Philippine Science Olympiad (PSO) sa PHIVOLCS Auditorium, Diliman, Quezon City. Sina Tanya Amor (10 – Lauan), Ralph Valencia (10 – Acacia), at Mariel de Luna (9 – Gold) ang mga kinatawan ng UPIS.

Nagkaroon ng practical at written test sa unang round ng kumpetisyon. Nakasama ang UPIS sa top 10 at sa ikalawang bahagi, naglaban-laban sa isang quiz bee ang mga paaralan na nakapasok.

Nakamit ng UPIS ang ika-9 na puwesto. Baguio National High School ang nag-kampeon.

sa 4x50 Freestyle. Jomil Gutierrez

Matagumpay na umuwi ang UPIS Varsity Swimming Team mula sa ginanap na UAAP Swimming Competition sa Trace College, Los Banos, Laguna noong Setyembre 22-25.

Nakuha ng UPIS Varsity Swimming Team Girls ang ikatlong pwesto sa pangkabuuan. Itinanghal rin na Rookie of the Year sa UAAP Season '74 si Pricila Aquino ng 7-Mercury na nagkamit ng 2 gold, 1 silver, at 3 bronze.

Sa individuals, nakuha ni Aquino ang gold sa 400m freestyle, silver sa 200m Freestyle, at bronze sa 200m Individual Medley at 800m Freestyle. Si Joy Rodgers ng 9-Silver ay nagkamit naman ng gold sa 50m at 100m Breaststroke.

Sa relays, nakuha ng team nina Aquino, Rodgers, Nina Bea Leis ng 9-Iron, at Jean Marne Gutierrez ng 8-Firefly ang gold sa 4x50 Freestyle.

Ang relay team naman nina Leis, Rodgers, April de Castro ng 10-Acacia, at Red Rivera ng 8-Butterfly ay nagkamit naman ng silver sa 4x50 Medley Relay. Sina Leis, Rodgers, Aquino at Rivera naman ang nakakuha ng bronze sa 4x100 Medley Relay

Nagkamit din ng bronze sa 4x200 Freestyle sina Gutierrez, Rivera, Shaila Fortajada, Celina Medina ng 8- Butterfly.

Para sa Boys team, nakuha naman ni Jeremiah Esguerra ng 9-Iron ang bronze sa 50m Breaststroke. Nagwagi din ng bronze ang relay team nina Esguerra, Nicolo Saren at Paul Enriquez ng 9-Gold, at Patrick Sajol ng 9-Iron sa 4x50 Freestyle at 4x100 Medley Relay.

UPIS nagtagumpay sa INCEthink

Ginanap noong Setymebre 7, 2011 ang paligsahang INCEthink sa Engineering Theatre, Melchor Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman.

Layunin sa paligsahang ito na makagawa ang bawat koponan ng isang matibay, matatag at kaaya-ayang tulay gamit ang 100 barbeque stick at 1 rolyong nylon.

Dalawang grupo ang naging kinatawan ng UPIS sa nabanggit na kumpetisyon. Sina Audri Gabriel, Noel Lava at Monty Banta ang bumubuo sa Team A. Samantalang Team B naman sina Jasper Bongaonta, Ralph Valencia at Theeex Agapito.

Nakuha ng Grace Christian Academy ang unang gantimpala. Nakamit ng team A ang ikaapat na puwesto at ang ikalimang puwesto nama’y nakamit ng Team B. Ito ang unang pagkakataon ng UPIS na sumali sa ganitong kumpetisyon.

Ginanap noong Setyembre 3, 2011 ang unang Brain Mesh sa Melchor Hall, UP Diliman.

Nilahukan ito ng mga mag-aaral mula sa 15 paaralan sa Metro Manila. Sina Jasper Bongalonta ng 10-Acacia at Theeex Agapito ng 10-Narra ang mga kinatawan ng UPIS.

Nagawa nilang makalagpas sa unang bahagi ng elimination round at semis, kung saan naka-tie nila ang Manila Science Highschool sa ikatlong puwesto. Naging mahigpit ang laban sa pagitan ng dalawang paaralan. Dahilan para magkaroon ng dalawang beses na tie-breaker round. Nasagot ng Manila Science Highschool ang huling tie-breaker.

Bagama’t hindi nakapasok sa finals, masaya pa rin ang koponan dahil nagawa nilang makipagsabayan sa mga top schools.

Sa pagtatapos ng kompetisyon, nakamit ng Philippine Science Highschool ang unang puwesto habang nasa ikalawang puwesto naman ang Manila Science Higschool.

UPIS Senior Scouts' investiture rites held at the Multipurpose Hall.
Ginanap noong Setyembre 16 ang taunang investiture ng Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) ng UPIS sa Multi-Purpose Hall kung saan itinalaga ang mga bagong senior scouts ng organisasyon.

Bilang panimula, nagbigay ng pambungad na pananalita si Dr. Ronaldo San Jose, ang prinsipal at tumatayong Instituitional Head ng BSP. Pinangunahan naman ni G. Ralph Cedro, outfit adviser ng BSP, ang pagtanggap at panunumpa ng mga bagong senior scouts.

Nagbigay naman ng isang talumpati ang panauhing pandangal na si Atty. Romel Casis. Binanggit niya na isang karangalan ang pagiging boy scout. Idinagdag niyang dapat na isabuhay ang mga aral ng pagiging BSP.

Bilang tugon, namumpa ang mga Senior scouts na kanilang isasabuhay ang mga Batas ng Souts at Senior Scout Code.

Pagkatapos ng seremonya, ginanap ang Investiture Camp ng mga BSP.

We cannot deny that a large part of our lifestyle has been influenced by our post-colonizers. The Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese all have contributed a large part on our society, history, and way of thinking. So much on this foreign impact that most of the time we are unclear to what is truly ours. And when asked, "What really is originally Filipino?" our answer is vague and hazy instead of clear and concrete.

After hundreds and hundreds of years of foreign occupation in our land, it is inevitable for colonizers to leave behind a trace of their culture. And it is up to the Filipinos to either adapt or adopt the new ideas they are exposed to. With the help of our ever-growing colonial mentality, these influences are more often than not taken to heart by us Filipinos. Therefore, our own culture and beliefs are overshadowed.

But there is still hope for the worrying spirits of our ancestral Filipinos. Although they are taken for granted--or just not remembered--there are still values and traditions that have stayed even after our struggle and conflict with the colonizers. These values and traits are things to be proud of, and we Filipinos should be thankful that they survived throughout the hundreds and hundreds of years that people from far-off lands conquered the country.

One of these traits is the ability to be cheerful, whatever the situation is. Be it either fire or whatever disaster, you can see the bystanders behind the TV reporter of the calamity waving and smiling at the camera, grateful for the chance to be on TV. No doubt that Filipinos are considered to be one of the happiest people in the world. Another Filipino trait is hospitality. If you ever attempt to interrupt a family while eating, you can expect that they will happily invite you to dine with them. And in a Filipino household , you can never have too many guests Respect towards elders is another Filipino characteristic. The saying of "po" and "opo" as a sign of respect is still practiced until now, by many of the Filipino youth.

These traits come to us as something natural and effortless, although a little do we know that these are remnants of our pre-colonization way of thinking. And to keep them alive, we need to practice and teach them to future generations, for they make a large part of our national identity, the distinctive feature that differentiates us from other nations.

VST out to make UPIS proud

The UPIS Varsity Swimming Team (VST) will leave tomorrow to compete in the UAAP Season 74 swimming competition to be held at Trace College Los Banos, Laguna on September 22-25.

College and high school swimmers from different schools like Ateneo, UST, La Salle, and UE will participate in the Backstroke, Freestyle, Butterfly, Relay, and Individual Medley events, among others.

Senior April de Castro, team captain of the UPIS VST, said that this is really important to her and the rest of the team.


Everyday, they stay until 9 pm to finish the given work out. They spend a lot of time training so they go all out and make sure to put in hard work and give their best. Coach Bernie, the team's long-time mentor, is always there to support and assist all his swimmers.

The UPIS VST is also all set to break records just like what Joy Rodgers did last year.

On September 24, 2010, Rodgers, then a first-time participant, finished the 50m Breast Stroke event in 35.88 seconds to bag a gold medal and break the previous record of 35.93 established by Filipina olympian Jenny Guerrero in 1999. UPIS student bags 2nd Place in essay writing contest

Tanya Jean Amor of 10-Lauan was awarded second place in the 2nd Goodwill Bookstore Voice of the Youth in Print essay writing competition at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City yesterday.

This year's theme was Going Green in the Philippine Scene: A Trendy Attempt or a Timeless Effort. The said contest was open to all 3rd year and 4th year high school students in the National Capital Region.

Amor placed second out of 33 students who participated in the contest. She received a certificate of recognition, P3000 in cash, a gift certificate from SM, and gift packs.

Ma. Teresa Cancio-Sulpico, Goodwill Bookstore's president, later announced that the next year's competition awards will be raised to P40,000 for first place, P30,000 for second, P20000 and P10000 for 3rd and 4th respectively.

On October 3, 2010, a small, cozy, tea shop along Magiting Street, Quezon City opened its doors to the public. Now one of the most well-known establishments in the famous Maginhawa area, Moonleaf Tea Shop used to be a hole in the wall frequented mostly  by UP students and other people along the village.

How did it all begin?

It was actually out of curiositea.

Adrian Adriano, a UP Diliman graduate who studied International Business at Kainan University in Taiwan, noticed how tea was very prolific in Taiwan’s culture, and knowing that Filipinos patronize cool blends, wondered why tea is not yet well-known in the Philippines. He then decided to introduce it to our tropical country.

Why Moonleaf?

Adriano, being the business-minded and optimistic futurist that he is, then came-up with his own brand—Moonleaf Tea Shop, which is definitely catchy and very meaningful at the same time.

Moon is a very symbolic figure for luck in China that resembles the pearls or sago usually added to the iced milk tea. Leaf, on the other hand, represents the tea leaves.

What makes it different?

forgot to take a pic before slurping it all down.
“We use authentic tea imported from Taiwan and make sure that our teas are all naturally and freshly brewed,” says Thysz Estrada, Moonleaf Tea Shop’s marketing manager. He adds that there is a ‘Pinoy twist’ to their milk teas. The Filipino people love sweet beverages, so they want to serve them high quality, enjoyable, fun, affordable, and simple milk tea. Customers also have the choice to customize their tea to make it even more special.

Moonleaf Tea Shop is not just an ordinary tea shop. They collaborate with budding artists. The team belongs to an influential circles of designers, artists, musicians, and a lot of people in the creative industry. Earlier this month, they hosted Anteroom Sessions by Punchdrunk Panda which is an event showcasing independent brands and artists.

“Moonleaf Milk Tea is not just a fad,” clarifies Estrada. “It’s more of a lifestyle.”

What’s new in the new shop?

The tea shop is now brewing in a larger space along Maginhawa Street in Teacher's Village, Quezon City. This is just a few blocks away from their first shop. Seats and tables were added to accommodate more people but the cork boards and wall shelves are still there to keep the cozy and familiar vibe.

Also, yummy pastries like homemade cakes, cookies, and French macaroons by different entrepreneurs from Teacher’s Village are now being sold in the shop.

Watch out for their soon-to-open branches! The shop’s target is to democratize milk tea and establish tea shops especially in home and school communities because according to Estrada, they are the most loyal customers. Check out their latest branch along Tolentino St., near UST in Manila.

Mga batang henyo ng UPIS muling napatunayan ang galing

Naganap noong Setyembre 3 ang elimination round ng Philippine Science Olympiad (PSO) sa Angelicum College Quezon City.

Nilahukan ito ni Franz Candido, Jarod de Luna, Larkin Dumelod ng mga mag-aaral mula sa Grado 5-6 at nina Tanya Amor, Mariel de Luna at Ralph Valencia na mula naman sa Grado 9-10.

Nasubukan ang galing ng mga estudyante sa pamamagitan ng iba't ibang pagsusulit - Practical at Written na may kinalaman sa Physics, Earth Science, Chemistry, Biology at Information and Communications Technology.

Nahirapan man ang mga pambato ng UPIS, nagkaroon ito ng mabuting resulta. Sa pagtatapos ng elimination round, nakapasok ang UPIS sa top 20 schools nationwide at lalaban sa National Finals. Ang nasabing finals ay gaganapin sa Setyembre 24 sa PHILVOCS.

UPIS sumabak sa Tagisan ng Talino

Naimbitahan ang UPIS sa Interscholastic Social Sciences and Philosophy Quiz Competition na ginanap sa NCPAG, UP Diliman noong Setymebre 12.

Dalawang team ang ipinadala ng UPIS sa nasabing kompetisyon. Kabilang sa Team A sina Gerard Gamboa ng 10-Narra, Shari Oliquino ng 9-Iron, at Mikaela Mabalot ng 8-Damselfly. Sina Lara Cruz ng 10-Narra at Christine Prieto ng 9-Silver naman ang bumuo ng Team B. Napili ang mga kalahok base sa kanilang grado sa Araling Panlipunan noong nakaraang taon.

6 na paaralan ang nakalaban ng UPIS sa elimination round. Ilan sa mga ito ay ang Philippine Science High School at San Sebastian College.

Hindi pinalad ang UPIS na makapasok sa final round ngunit sila ay nagkamit ng ika-anim na pwesto. Nakakuha sila ng iskor na 168 at dalawang puntos lamang ang pagitan sa ika-5 pwesto pumasok sa final round.

Ginanap ang taunang investiture ng Girl Scouts of the Philippines ng UPIS sa Multi-Purpose Hall noong nakaraang Setyembre 9 kung saan itinalaga ang mga bagong senior scouts at bagong cadets habang ni-rededicate naman ang ibang scouts.

Nagbigay ng pambungad na pananalita si Dr. Ronaldo San Jose, ang prinsipal, at si Ma’am Lady Soledad Reodica na mula sa GSP Quezon City council tungkol sa tamang pagsasapuso ng pagiging isang scout .

Matapos ang seremonya, nagkaroon ng isang team building activity ang mga cadet. Pinangunahan ito ni Ms. Karen Panol mula sa Eduk Inc.

Layunin ng team building na mabuo ang pagkakaisa at pagtutulungan sa bawat miyembro ng organisasyon. Kabilang din sa kanilang tungkulin ang pagpaplano at pagtatakda ng mga aktibidades para sa nalalapit na Senior Patrol Leadership Training (SPLT).

Ginanap naman ang investiture ng Junior Girl Scouts at Star Scouts noong Setyembre 12 sa Bulwagan. Bukod sa mga bagong scouts, itinalaga rin dito ang mga kasapi ng UPIS Junior GSP Patrol Committee na binubuo ng mga magulang at troop leader at pamumunuan ni Gng. Angelie Domingo.

It was in the swinging 70s & 80s that the Philippines reached its zenith in cinematography. Beautifully decorated movie houses at Avenida Rizal were filled to the brim. Girls, with their Farrah Fawcett hairdo, waited for the latest installment in the Guy and Pip series. Nearby, the guys, with their high and tight pants and large collared shirts, stood in line for the next Fernando Poe Jr. movie. In the other side of town, critical praise was being showered for the brilliant films of greats such as Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal. Under the geniuses’ guidance, former nobodies such as Nora Aunor, Christopher de Leon and Tirso Cruz III grew to become legends of the silver screen. It was the Golden Age of Philippine Cinema and all were excited to see the heights that the film industry could reach.

Fast forward thirty years, and the once glorious movie houses of Manila sit empty and are deserted, with their once bright paint giving way to sad and pale hues. Commercialized malls now cater to the young generation’s entertainment needs. In the preview areas, foreign films dominate, with a local poster in sight. The Philippine movie industry is now viewed as a laughing stock, and rightfully so. It churns out films targeted for the masses, with dramas filled with overly dramatic plots done a hundred times before and comedies studded with cheap jokes and outdated slapstick.

Yet recently, an ambitious film was released which aimed to break from the cycle of cinematic mediocrity. Ang Babae sa Septic Tank was a breath of fresh air for most movie goers. It had a highly creative plot and brilliant cinematography. With its use of clever concepts and witty dialogue, one can be reminded of the heydays of local cinema.

UPIS Junior Maroons scores first win in 3 years

It took a last second shot in their last game of the season to break a 55-game losing run.

The UPIS Junior Fighting Maroons finally had a taste of victory after 3 long years when they beat the UE Junior Warriors, 73-71, in overtime last September 10 at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Sophomore Adam Lopez grabbed the ball off a missed free throw by Jozhua General and scored the game-winning put-back with less than 10 seconds left in the clock.

With the score tied at 26 at the half, the Junior Warriors opened the third quarter with a 12-3 run to lead by 9, 38-29, but the Junior Maroons fiercely battled back to keep the game close.

Angelo Sablan scored a lay-up to put UPIS in the lead, 61-59, towards the end of regulation but UE was able to tie the count and force overtime.

Sablan finished the game with 17 points to lead all UPIS scorers. Kim Cinco scored 11, Freddy Pajarillaga added 10, while Lopez and Paolo Ancheta chipped in 8 apiece. -- CC, with reports from Anna Angala, Ysmael Mendoza, and Nadine Maximo

Umikot sa temang Wika at Kasaysayang Pilipino, Landas sa Pagsulong ng Karapatang Pantao ang pagtatanghal ng bawat grado.

Ang mga nagwagi sa paligsahan ng mga seksyon.

Unang nagpakita ng madulang Sabayang Pagbigkas sa tulang Panata sa Kalayaan ni Amado V. Hernandez ang batch 2015. 7-Jupiter ang nagkamit ng unang gantimpala.

Nagwagi naman ang 8-Butterfly sa kanilang interpretatibong sayaw ng kantang Karapatan ni Toto Colongon.

Sa paligsahan ng Tugtuging Etniko sa Grado 9, kinailangang lumikha at tumugtog ng musikang etniko ang mga kalahok na seksyon at bigyan ng karampatang sayaw na saliw dito. Inuwi ng 9-Iron ang unang gantimpala sa patimpalak na ito.

Huling nagpakitang gilas ang mga estudyante ng Grado 10. Inihandog nila ang sari-sariling bersyon ng Sayawit sa mga kantang OPM tulad ng Tatsulok, Upuan, Balita, Batingaw at iba pa. 10-Lauan ang nagtagumpay sa patimpalak na ito.

The UPIS Fencing Team competed in the DPS-VBF All-Rookie Fiery Fencing Festival last Saturday, September 3 at the Diliman Preparatory School Gymnasium.

Sophomore Bertram Matabang ranked 8th out of more than 30 competing fencers in the Men's Foil division while Mikee Neri placed 15th overall in the Women's Sabre division and Jana Nicole Ologenio ranked 16th overall in the Women's Foil division.

Miguel Flores, who destroyed the other members of his pool by scoring 5-2 in two games, qualified for the direct eliminations for the Men's Sabre division together with Rafael Flores and Nico Denosta. Mel Cometa, meanwhile, competed in the Men's Foil division.

Ologenio, Reagene Fernando, and Nikki Diaz, only qualified for the direct eliminations for the Women's Foil division but all were one of the top scorers of their pool.
