Literary: Tides on the Shore

I. High Tides

The shore is where the land meets the sea, and on it, the tides of fate brought a girl who lived in the town nearby and a boy who came from afar together for the very first time.

The girl was running some errands by the sea, one summer afternoon, when a boy who wore a troubled look approached her and meekly asked for directions. The girl quickly noted that the boy was holding a suitcase and wearing unfamiliar clothes before answering in a friendly manner.

“Oh, I know how to get there! Just walk straight ahead and take a left turn at the third corner. You’re looking for the third building on the left side of that street. You know, I can take you there if you want! I need to finish running this errand first, though. Is that okay with you?”

“Sure. If you don’t mind, I can also tag along and help you with whatever it is you need to do. It’s the least I can do to pay you back for your assistance,” the boy replied with a smile.

The girl took the boy up on his offer, and they began walking together by the sea. At first, they did not even know each other’s names. By the time they had accomplished the girl’s errands, they were telling each other things about themselves and where they were from. Before long, they reached the boy’s destination and reluctantly said goodbye to each other. This was their first time meeting each other, but it would be far from the last.

Each day after their first encounter, they’d “accidentally” meet in the late hours of the afternoon at the place where they first met. How they spent these hours varied day to day, with the only constant being each other’s presence. On some days, they’d chase each other around the beach, not minding the sand that entered their shoes. On others, they would lie down together on the sand, laughing as they told each other stories, with one often laughing at the tales of the other. They would also make a canvas out of the sand and draw illustrations to accompany their voices. From time to time, the boy would bring his guitar and sing songs that soothed the girl’s ear. Occasionally, a large boat would pass by and they would drop whatever they were doing to allow the boy to marvel at the majesty of the vessel. At times, the girl would feel down, and without fail, the boy would stretch out his arms and bring her into his warm embrace. No matter how they chose to spend the afternoon, the hours would pass them by and they would find that the sun was about to sink into the sea. They would spend a few more minutes together, admiring the scenery—and each other—as the sky blushed and the sun gently kissed the sea.

II. Low Tides

The shore is where the land meets the sea, and on it, the tides of fate are watching—and perhaps mocking—a girl walking by her lonesome.

This time, she has no errands to run. She feels troubled and lost, but no one can give her either help or direction. She longs for someone to talk to, but there is no one around her. She stops to sigh and stare at the horizon where the sky touches the endless sea as her mind takes her on a cruise through time.

On some days, we would run around on these beaches and I would often leave him behind, not realizing that it would eventually be my turn to get left behind. On others, we would tell each other stories. I would only laugh and pretend to listen at times, not knowing that I would soon lose the chance to hear his voice. We would even draw pictures in the sand, forgetting that whatever we made would just get washed away by the unfeeling waves. From time to time, he would bring his ever-so-slightly out-of-tune guitar and sing songs that fill me with melancholy as I recall them. Occasionally, a large boat would pass by, and he would get excited without fail. I would have made fun of him if he hadn’t whispered to me a promise to take me on a cruise through all the seven seas. However, his promise will remain just that—a promise.

By the time she has finished reminiscing, the horizon she was staring at has already turned an orange hue that is painfully familiar to her. A part of her wants to look away, but she can’t. She knows that she has to take in every moment of the sunset, not for herself, but for the one who can no longer enjoy the luxury of doing so. She silently wishes that she can be forever stuck in that moment, that she can cling on to the last vestiges of the twilight she once shared with another. Alas, her wishes are in vain, and the setting sun soon ushers in the cold night. She falls into despondence, and there is no warm embrace that can comfort her. Not anymore.

I have to get going; I still have a eulogy to prepare.

Literary: A Father’s Advent

For seven years, I’ve been away
And for what seemed as long, I stood at my home’s door
Carefully, I picked out the words I wished to say
Then knocked when I couldn’t wait anymore
I was filled inside with a slight sense of dread
As the door was pushed open by a small girl
I forgot all the words I had prepared
As my mind was filled with questions for her
How has she been?
Has she been eating well?
What is she interested in?
What stories does she have to tell?
But she had her own inquiry
And she spoke before I was able to
Her words were few, her tone was steady
All she asked was “Who are you?”

The girl who stands before me is my daughter
Yes she is, but I am not her father

Literary: At Long Last

I caught a glimpse of a fair lady
Who was smiling at me from afar
Against the backdrop of the skies so gloomy
She shone resplendently like the stars
She closed the distance between us
In surprise, I could not even exclaim
And before I could get a chance to ask
She told me that Hope was her name
She whispered to me promises of splendor
Of fulfillment, glory, and jubilation
She said all I had to do was to chase her
I wanted to, but I listened to reason
So I said no and we had to part
And she left as swiftly as she came
Soon thereafter, regret pained my heart
I realized I trapped myself in the mundane
Then one day, I saw her once again
And her sweet promises came to mind
I made up my mind right there and then
That I would chase after her this time
I didn’t know I had a long journey ahead
But I reached her after a long time has passed
I gave her a tap on the shoulder and said
“Hope, I’ve caught up to you at long last”
She paused and sighed before doing a spin
And what followed caught me unprepared
She told me that Hope was her twin
And that her name was Despair

Literary: I Fear not Death

I fear not Death
For there is nothing to fear
He can take away my breath
But not all I hold dear

Not the steps I’ve walked
Nor the songs I’ve sung
Not the struggles I’ve fought
Nor the victories I’ve won

Not the dreams I’ve dreamt
Nor the passions I’ve held
Not the love I’ve sent
Nor the loss I’ve beheld

I fear not Death
For there is nothing to fear
He can take away my breath
But my life won’t disappear

Literary: Inescapable

What does one do
When he finds his being
Reduced to a mindless cycle
Of waking and sleeping
With only emptiness in between
What does he do
When he steps out
Hoping to find comfort
But only finds
That the world
Is a breeding ground
For apathy
That the crowds are a gathering
For the lonely
What does he do
When all that is offered to him
Are empty words
And sweet insignificance
What does he do
When he has to choose
Between nothing
And nothing

Maybe he does
Continue to accept
How reality keeps on shifting each day and night
Even when those dreams and feet
Keep appearing the same plot and footprints
Over and over
Maybe he does
Realize that apathy begins
Every time he's
Trying to grin through a crowded world
While he's the light
he has always been trying to perceive
Maybe he does not
Need to hear
The gloom of each word
That came from a phoney mouth
Maybe he does not
Need to choose
Between nothing and nothing
Maybe what he needs to do
Is to create something new

Literary: Blissful Ignorance

People praise how beautiful the nocturnal sky is. Why not gaze at an unexplored world where sunlight is non-existent?

People keep pointing out these gleaming circles with distinct colors. Why not be overwhelmed by the entities who make their own ink palettes?

People don't want to blink because they'll miss a shooting star. Why not try to blink to get a glance of a weird and monstrous place?

People want to see the Aurora Borealis embellish a pitch black sky. Why not flash a light into the depths where it paints a whole new different scene?

People are used to seeing a silent cosmos. People want to be a part of different constellations. Only an inch separates the night sky from the twilight ocean. But why do we keep looking above instead of diving beneath?

People love to admire
What seems to be out of reach
As they pretend to reach out
Without any intention of trying
While they tell themselves
They never could have made it
So they sit, they watch, and they sigh
Blissfully in artificial ignorance
For if they admit
That they could reach out
Somewhere else
To find the beauty
They have longed for
They will be confessing
That all the efforts they have made
Were all just for show
So like I, they just wonder
At what they’ve already seen
Afraid of asking themselves
What could be

Literary: Reviews of the Annual Love Carnival

A Review of the Annual Love Carnival (2019)

The Love Carnival is an annual carnival held for a week starting on Valentine’s Day. Inside, you can usually find concessionaire stands selling a wide variety of food and drinks, live bands performing their own music and covers of classics and, of course, tons of rides ranging from the relaxing Ferris wheel to the thrilling roller coaster. This year, I was able to go to the carnival for the very first time with my girlfriend. These are my thoughts on the carnival.

FOOD AND DRINKS – 10/10

Bacon-wrapped chicken sandwiches, sea salt ice cream, orange-mocha frappuccinos — you name it, the fair probably has it. Not only were the food varied and appealing, they were also fun and most importantly, tasty. If you go to the fair, you have to try the amazing coffee floats. Some people think that they are too sweet but my girlfriend and I thought it was just right and we loved it.

MUSIC – 10/10

The carnival organizers did a tremendous job at inviting bands. The music was played by a mix of famous bands and relatively unknown ones. However, all of them played cleanly and tightly. The people who did the mixing also did a great job, especially when considering that the carnival was in an open-air area. The drums were punchy, the bass was heart-thumping, the guitars were not too loud, and the vocals were clearly audible. Some of the songs I heard will probably stay in my head for the next few days.

RIDES – 10/10

Rides are what make or break a carnival. I am glad to say that the rides did the former. The Ferris wheel gave an amazing view and was the perfect avenue to discuss plans and dreams with my girlfriend. The mirror maze tested our ability to solve problems while also allowing our relationship to grow. The carousel was fun in its own little simple way. The roller coaster was the most interesting for me because it made people feel fear when there was really nothing to be afraid of. Nevertheless, it was exciting and led to some hugs with my girlfriend.

OVERALL – 10/10

The carnival was spectacular and I cannot wait to go there again with my girlfriend next year.

A Review of the Annual Love Carnival (2020)

The Love Carnival is an annual carnival held for a week starting on February 14. Inside, you can usually find capitalist stands who want to sell food and drinks, live bands performing their original music which nobody cares about and overplayed songs and, of course, an absurd amount of rides designed to waste your time. This year, I went to the carnival for the second time. These are my thoughts on the carnival.

FOOD AND DRINKS – 1/10

Sandwiches, ice cream, frappuccinos — you name a cliché, the fair probably has it. Not only were the food items monotonous and unappealing, they were also boring and most importantly, unpleasant. If you go to the fair, you have to avoid the terrible coffee floats. Some people think that they are perfectly sweet but I found them way too bitter and I hated it.

MUSIC – 1/10

The carnival organizers did a horrible job at inviting bands. The music was played by a mix of overrated bands and obscure ones. However, all of them played loosely and terribly. The people who did the mixing also did a lowly job, even when considering that the carnival was an open-air area. The drums were noisy, the bass could not be felt, the guitars were screechy, and the vocals were dirty. I hope I can get the sound out of my head as soon as possible.

RIDES – 1/10

Rides are what make or break a carnival. I am saddened to say that the rides did the latter. The Ferris wheel gave a terrible view and left me thinking about all of my problems. The mirror maze was frustrating and confusing and just made me want to break the mirrors. The carousel was stupid and just made me go around in circles. The roller coaster was the most interesting for me because it made people feel fear when there was really nothing to be afraid of. Anyways, it was boring and led to nothing important.

OVERALL – 1/10

The carnival was a waste of time and I will not be going there again next year.

Literary: Full Marks

The time was 11:00. I had only English class left before my lunch break. I entered the classroom and saw that the chairs were arranged differently from the usual. I remembered that we had to take a test that day. I was only able to laugh at the fact that I was unprepared. I took my place near the windows at the back of the class and waited for my test paper to be handed to me. I looked down at my test paper and saw that it was not an objective test. I can actually pass this test! I thought. I borrowed a pen from my seatmate and started answering.

Quiz 2
3rd Quarter

INSTRUCTIONS: ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS CONCISELY AND COMPLETELY.

WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING IN THE WORLD?
Love.

WHY DO YOU SAY SO?
Love is simple. It can be the thrill of holding hands with someone or the joy felt because of another person’s smile. It can also be the warmth of a hug or the intimacy from sharing a kiss. At the same time, love is complex. Love can make fools of wise men. Love makes the ordinary feel important. Love sweetens the heart in a way that nothing else can.

HOW CAN YOU SAY SO?
I can say this because I’ve seen love and I’ve known love. I can say this because I love someone.

I finished the test with quite a bit of time remaining before it was time to turn the papers in. I decided to do a little bit of sightseeing as I usually do whenever I finish tests early. I peeked out the window and saw the woman that held my heart. However, she was also holding something else — another man’s hand. Though I was far from her, I can feel the joy in her smile though the smile was not for me. I watched as they held each other in their arms and as they held themselves back from joining their lips. That short moment felt like an eternity to me. That eternity showed me just how much of a fool I was. That eternity reminded me of my unimportance. That eternity replaced the sweetness in my heart with a heavy bitterness. The eternity I was trapped in was broken when my seatmate tapped my shoulder and signaled for me to pass my paper. I later found out that I scored full marks on the test but I could not rejoice as I felt that my answers were incorrect.
