Learning Plus to start this school year
The Department of CA English, Music and Art (CA EMA) has started preparations for a reading remediation program for Grades 3-9 students this school year.According to Prof. Ma. Lourdes Vargas, head of CA EMA department, the Learning Plus or L+ program was started by Prof. Bernadette Santos in AY 2005-2006. It was revived in 2011, but due to conflicts in the schedule it was discontinued. This year, the schedule has been set in place and the program is more structured.
Students part of the program are required to attend 1-hour sessions which include lessons that aim to develop good reading habits and positive reading attitude. Parents with children part of the program will receive a letter regarding the session details.

Forum to compete in Voice of our Youth 2012
UPIS 7-10 Forum members will be participating in The Voice of Our Youth 12th National Impromptu Speaking Competition next month.The competition will have three elimination rounds and one final round. The first elimination round will be on October 20, the second on October 27, the third on November 3 and the final round on November 10.
The competition aims to inspire the Filipino youth to attain world-class proficiency in English Communication, in furtherance of universal understanding and cooperation. ● by Reagene Fernando and Patricia Lim
UPIS Scrabble Team bags silver in Milo Little Olympics

The format of the competition was “The King of the Hill,” wherein the number of wins and losses are counted before the competitive spread. Their ranking is represented by their table number. The UPIS team of Diego Manansala, Angelo Nueva, Regie dela Cruz, Anthony Gososo, and Eric Rarugal has always been placed either at the 1st or 2nd table.
The final 4 schools competed in the championship rounds on September 9 wherein the UPIS Scrabble Team scored 7 wins and 5 losses in the 3-round championship match.

UPIS team wins Teen Debate
UPIS won against Philippine Science Highschool in the 7th biennal convention hosted by the Society of Adolescent Medicine of the Philippines, Inc. (SAMPI) held last September 3 at the Diamond Hotel in Roxas Boulevard.The judges pronounced the UPIS team composed of Red Bartolome, Mikee Neri, and Joanna Pagulayan as the overall winner and Bartolome as the best speaker.
The topic of the debate was “Social Networking: Boon or Bane” which was given last July for the teams to research on UPIS was given the affirmative stand.
The debate consisted of two rounds. The first in which both sides gave two constructive speeches and two rebuttals. The second round was a question and answer portion. SF Presents McFairy: A Twisted Fairytale

As a final requirement, the UPIS Speech Fundamentals Class held its culminating activity program last October 17 at the Multipurpose hall.
The program's purpose was to create a platform for UPIS students to showcase their talent and creativity in public speaking.
Patricia Enriquez and Noraiza Coquilla of 7-Jupiter covered Selena Gomez's Who Says and Pink's Perfect. Miguel Bongato from 10-Narra presented his monologue of Lancelot's piece: Act 2, Scene 2 from Shakespeare's novel Merchant of Venice while Red Rivera from 8-Butterfly orally expressed her own interpretation of Daren Criss' No Way.
Finally, the SF Class performed a musical play titled McFairy: A Twisted Fairytale, wherein Peter Pan, one of the main characters, tries to change the way how the stories ended.
The characters Peter Pan, Cinderella, Prince, Belle and Beast, Shrek, Fiona, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Flash and Quasimodo were played by Jomike Gemora, Deneese Montalbo, Yzrael Dumaguing, Red Rivera, Emerson Sandoval, Anthony Dacoco, Alissa Villareal, Regina Garcia, Jean Gutierrez, Jaime Mejia and, Kyle de Guzman respectively.
“Proud ako sa kanila dahil “fruit of labor” nila ‘yon,” said SF class adviser Ms. Sheila Fernandez. The class’ idea to conceptualize a play with twisted fairytale endings was well executed, and when they were asked what were they able to learn from the experience, Red Rivera replied, “Kahit magulo ang buhay, there’s always a fairytale!”

Literary (Submission): Prof. Vargas is the best!
This cute poem was written by Prof. Ma. Lourdes Vargas' Grade 3 student. She gave it to her after their English class 2 weeks ago. It was originally written in pencil on a whole sheet of paper so we had to make a typography for a more legible copy.
UPIS student bags 2nd Place in essay writing contest
Ysmael MendozaTanya Jean Amor of 10-Lauan was awarded second place in the 2nd Goodwill Bookstore Voice of the Youth in Print essay writing competition at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City yesterday.
This year's theme was Going Green in the Philippine Scene: A Trendy Attempt or a Timeless Effort. The said contest was open to all 3rd year and 4th year high school students in the National Capital Region.
Amor placed second out of 33 students who participated in the contest. She received a certificate of recognition, P3000 in cash, a gift certificate from SM, and gift packs.
Ma. Teresa Cancio-Sulpico, Goodwill Bookstore's president, later announced that the next year's competition awards will be raised to P40,000 for first place, P30,000 for second, P20000 and P10000 for 3rd and 4th respectively.
Pastores no more
by Kaye Banaag, Cara Bilangel, Sarah RomeroStarting this year, the annual culminating program Pastores a Belen will no longer be part of the requirements for Music 7-9, according to the CA-EMA department head, Prof. Ma. Lourdes Vargas.
The Pastores will be replaced by a class production, which will cover what has been learned in the subject every first semester.
Mr. Leujim Martinez, the high school Music teacher, said that this is due to the conflicts of grade submission which is discouraged by the administration. The 30% of students’ grade in Music comes from their Pastores performance held every December. Hence, the first semester grades are given during the third quarter.
The class production is an experimental project and will be evaluated after its implementation.
