The Junior Fighting Maroons have found the silver linings in what was an underwhelming season for them.

Despite finishing the season at the bottom of the standings at 1-13, the Junior Fighting Maroons still had enough shining moments to earn recognition as Aldous Torculas and Jelo Canillas bring home awards to the UP community. Torculas clinched a spot in the Mythical Five while Canillas was crowned the Rookie of the Year.

Torculas made it known from the get-go that he was going to be a major force in the league, scoring 10 points, dishing 5 dimes, and grabbing 25 rebounds in his debut. His dominance continued until the last game of the season where he grabbed 15 boards, racked up 7 rejections, and scored 14 points, including the game-sealing three that closed the door on a UE comeback and gave UPIS its only win of the season, ending a 19-game losing streak. The do-it-all forward ended the season with per-game averages of 11.6 points, 15.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.3 steals, and 2.3 blocks. His incredible averages allowed him to finish the season being first in rebounds, second in steals, second in blocks, and third in assists.

Canillas’ determination and drive earned him the praise of his teammates as someone who gave his 110% whenever he stepped on the hardwood. He was streaky offensively, scoring in the double-digits some games and making only one basket in others. However, his active effort and hustle allowed him to clean up after his team’s mistakes. The Maroon center averaged 4 offensive rebounds and 1.4 blocks to go along with his 7.2 points and 1.4 assists.

With expectations for them rising after they won their awards, the two Maroons are looking to use the season as a whetstone for them to improve and win more games next season.

“You guys can expect that next season, our team will come back stronger and better. I will be a more experienced player next season and more mature as well,” promised the Rookie of the Year.

On the other hand, Torculas said that he will not be fixated on people’s expectations of him and that his focus will instead be on improvement. “Gusto ko muna i-work lahat ng pwede kong i-work para makapaghanda sa next season.”

They will not be alone, however, as they will be joined by their teammates including points-per-game leader Ray Torres, team captain Collin Dimaculangan, and starting forward Jordi Gomez de Liano when they come back for more next year. //by Magan Basilio and Justin Polendey

Nagtagumpay ang mga miyembro ng University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Table Tennis Team sa 7th Pasig Friendship Cup na nilahukan ng mga manlalaro mula sa iba't ibang paaralan, clubs, at organisasyon noong nakaraang Pebrero 22-23 sa Ilaya Covered Court, Santolan, Pasig.

Nagpakitang-gilas ang rookie na si Faye Obaña na nagkamit ng gintong medalya sa 12-under category matapos niyang pataubin si Theacial Hernandez ng Southville International School and Colleges sa iskor na 3-1.

Naging positibo ang tugon ni Obaña nang tanungin siya tungkol sa kompetisyon. Ayon sa kaniya, mabusising paghahanda ang sikreto sa kaniyang pagkapanalo. "Masaya po, madami po ako[ng] nakilala at madami rin pong nagsabi na pagpatuloy ko lang po ito. Ako po ay nag-training n[an]g maayos at sinigurado na ako po ay nasa kondisyon."

Hindi man nagkamit ng medalya ang ibang manlalaro ay nakakuha pa rin sila ng puwesto. Itinanghal na Top 8 sa High School Doubles Boys Division sina Jazper Pacis at Joshua Guinto, Zire Salazar at Paolo Agunod. Nakapuwesto rin bilang Top 8 si Faye Obaña sa 16 under division.

Sa kabila ng hamon na panandaliang pananatili ng kanilang coach sa aktuwal na kompetisyon, nagpursigi ang koponan na maipakita ang bunga ng kanilang matinding training.

Ayon kay Amurao,"Nakita ko po na nag-improve hindi lang yung skills namin pati na rin po yung bond namin as a team kasi nagtulungan po talaga kami sa tournament at may part po kami sa laro ng isa’t isa."

Nang tanungin si Ruiz ukol sa ipinakita ng koponan sa torneyo, sinabi niya, "Natuwa ako sa mga naipakita ng bawat isa sa amin yung mga tunay na laro, kahit hindi man ganoon karami yung mga achievements namin, madaming pagkukulang o pagkakamali during games, at least mula sa mga ganoong bagay kami bumabase para sa improvement ng bawat isa at ng team para paghandaan sa trainings namin yung mga susunod na tournaments and competitions na sasalihan namin." //ni Christine Caparas

Through the years, the UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) league has continued to be one of the most-anticipated athletic associations in the country along with the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) for competing athletes of schools and universities, fans, and supporters alike. Its games are composed of basketball, swimming, track and field, volleyball, table tennis, and many more, but little did we know that there are events called “demo sports” that also take place during the season.

A demonstration sport, commonly known as a demo sport, is played in the UAAP to promote and test newly introduced events. Since demo sports are not medal events, the record and awards that are achieved in these sports are not tallied and recorded for the school’s overall standings.

Demonstration sports were first officially introduced in the 1912 Summer Olympics, where participating countries or the current host country adds the traditional and popular sports of their respective countries, but with medals achieved not being counted on the official medal count. As years passed, the organizing committees of every edition of the Olympics decided to add at least one demonstration sport per season. The UAAP adapted this system and started adding demo sports in the league.

There are some sports in the UAAP that started as a demo sport and have become medal sports now, such as beach volleyball, judo, and ballroom dancing. The 3x3 basketball, a sport played by three players on each team and is only played on one side of the regular basketball court, is the latest event added to the long list of medal sports.

The UP Junior Fighting Maroons Basketball Team (UPJBT) will compete in this season’s 3x3 basketball tournament at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, which was supposed to happen on March 6-8, 2020, but was now moved to a later schedule by the UAAP Board. There is also a girls’ division of the 3x3 tournament but the UPJBT currently doesn’t have a girls’ team counterpart.

The UAAP Board has also decided to introduce the boys’ and girls’ beach volleyball and lawn tennis as demonstration sports this Season 82.

The UPIS Boys’ Volleyball Team (UPISBVT) have joined the UAAP Season 82 Beach Volleyball Tournament for the first time. They have a current standing of 0-6, with one game left to compete after the UAAP board announced the final schedule. The UPIS Girls’ Volleyball Team, on the other hand, did not join this season’s tournament.

These demo sports are only a few compared to the medal sports played throughout the season. Still, even as demo sports, the athletes who’ll be representing their school should have the same level of support as the official medal events. Sooner or later, new demo sports will be added to include more sports in the league. //by Kyle Mararac

All UAAP events left for Season 82 from February 15, 2020, have been postponed by the UAAP Board due to the recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak.

The UPIS Boys Volleyball Team (UPIS BVT), the UPIS Track and Field Team (UPIS TNF), and the UPIS BLK were three of the affected teams as they had upcoming events when the change in schedule happened. The UPIS BVT only had one game day left for their season. The UPIS TNF and the UPIS BLK, on the other hand, had both their seasons postponed again.

The UPIS BVT, currently with a standing of 0-6, were looking into a possible win in their next and last game against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) on February 15 when the UAAP events were postponed.

Meanwhile, this is the third postponement of the UAAP Season 82 Track and Field tournament. At first, it was moved from its original dates, January 11-15, 2020, because of the conflict in schedule and venue with the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. The second change in schedule was due to the lack of complete equipment such as light posts on the track oval. The third change in schedule is the current postponement.

The UPIS BLK, the streetdance team representing UPIS, had their eyes on their competition day, March 15, when it was moved to March 21. It was then moved again due to the virus outbreak, but no new schedule has been set.

Sabay-sabay napasigaw ng "Atin to!" ang UP crowd sa pagkapanalo ng UPIS Junior Maroons kontra UE Junior Warriors sa kanilang huling laro sa UAAP 82 High School Basketball Tournament na ginanap sa Filoil Flying V Center noong Pebrero 5, 2020.

Sa unang dalawang minuto ng laro, nagpakawala na kaagad si Aldous Torculas ng 3-point shot na maya-maya'y sinundan ni Jordi Gomez de Liano na nakaambag na ng 12 puntos sa koponan sa iskor na 21-8. Hanggang sa huling minuto ng kwarter, hindi pa rin natitibag ng Junior Warriors ang Junior Maroons na lamang ng 15 puntos.

Sa pangalawang kwarter, nagpasiklab ng 2-point shot si Collin Dimaculangan na naging dahilan ng 16 puntos na lamang ng UPIS at tumira pa ng suwabeng 3-point shot sa iskor na 36-19. Sa huling limang segundo ng kwarter ay nag-init ang laro at nakatatlong puntos si Jonas Napalang na tinapos ang unang semestre sa iskor na 59-32, 27 points na lamang ng UPIS kontra UE.

Ang Junior Warriors ang unang nakapuntos sa ikatlong kwarter pero agad namang bumawi ang Junior Maroons sa magkasunod na pag-iskor nina Jelo Canillas at Dimaculangan. Nagpaulan din ng magkakasunod na 3-point shot sina Ray Torres at Dimaculangan na nagresulta sa 34 puntos na lamang ng UPIS.

Tambak ang iskor ng UE sa pagbubukas ng huling kwarter ng laro pero hindi nakampante ang Junior Maroons na patuloy na lumaban. Nagpakawala si Abel Lopez ng magkasunod na 2 at 3-point shots ngunit pagdating sa iskor na 82-50, tumindi ang laban noong unti-unting nakahabol ang UE. Sa huling dalawampung segundo ng laro, 1 puntos na lang ang pagitan ng UE at UPIS ngunit nagpakawala ng 3-point shot si Torculas at sa iskor na 86-81, nagwagi ang Junior Maroons sa mainit na laro.

The UPIS Junior Fighting Maroons Basketball Team were trumped by the National University-Nazareth School (NU) Bullpups at 113-76 on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

UPIS stands 0-13 with its second-to-the-last game against defending champions NU.

The game began with the ball in NU’s court, with the Bullpups immediately grabbing the opportunity to put the first shot in and score a 3-pointer within the first 10 seconds. Jordi Gomez de Liaño of the Junior Fighting Maroons quickly followed up with a 2-point shot. The quarter played out with UPIS on NU’s tail, pulling the Maroons’ score up anytime the ratio got too steep. It ended with the two teams on equal footing with UPIS only a single point behind, 27-26.

NU went in with determination at the start of the 2nd quarter, garnering 12 points before UPIS made its first 2. The Maroons continued and persisted, hoping to catch up to their opponents. The Bullpups edged UPIS with just 9 points, 51-42, by the end of the first half.

A relatively close gap of scores was sustained throughout the first part of the third quarter, especially with Gomez de Liaño's and Ray Torres's 3-point shots, but the Bullpups gained vigor and widened the gap. The quarter ended with a score of 84-57 in favor of the Bullpups.

Both Maroons and Bullpups alike fought hard in offense and defense, but ultimately, the Maroons were left lagging behind with 37 points to catch up on at the end of the fourth and final quarter.

When asked about what the Maroons' plans were for the next game, Gomez de Liaño, top-scorer of the game, said, "Same plan lang, like we do every other game, but... we're gonna give it our all kasi last game na namin."

The Maroons will be facing the University of the East Junior Warriors at 1 p.m. tomorrow, February 5, at the Filoil Flying V Centre for their last game of the season.

The Junior Fighting Maroons Basketball Team fell to the Adamson Baby Falcons, 81-70, in their match on January 29 at the Blue Eagle Gym.

UPIS won the opening tip but it was Adamson who won the first quarter, starting the game with an 8-0 run and finishing the quarter with 22 points. On the other hand, UPIS only reached 10 points with a little over a minute left in the quarter. The Junior Fighting Maroons went into the second quarter down 10, 22-12.

The Junior Fighting Maroons did not give up, starting a rally to get back into the game in the second quarter. This rally peaked with a ball save play from Aldous Torculas which led to a three-pointer from Ray Torres that cut the lead down to 2. The game went into halftime, 34-30 in favor of the Baby Falcons.

The Baby Falcons emerged from the break with ferocity, widening the gap back to 10, 43-33, in a span of 2 minutes. The Junior Fighting Maroons were not deterred, going on a 15-7 run led by Torres and Collin Dimaculangan. The Baby Falcons were able to hold their lead and end the quarter leading by 5, 59-54.

The first part of the fourth quarter went well for the Junior Fighting Maroons as they were able to tie the game, 61-61, off a basket by Torres who was fouled and had a chance to give UPIS its first lead of the game. The rest of the game did not go so well for UPIS. Torres missed the lead-taking free throw and the Junior Fighting Maroons collapsed, scoring only 9 points for the rest of the game and falling to the Baby Falcons.

UPIS shot a better effective field goal percentage (49.15%) than their opponents (45.39%). However, Adamson was able to grab 21 rebounds while the Junior Fighting Maroons only got 6. This gave the Baby Falcons more opportunities to shoot and let them outscore UPIS.

Adamson had better inside scoring while UPIS got more points from the perimeter. Depth also played a huge part with Adamson getting 60 points off the bench while UPIS got only 6.

The Junior Fighting Maroons will be facing the undefeated Bullpups tomorrow 9 am, at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

The Junior Maroons sink to a 0-11 record after a devastating loss against the Baby Tamaraws, 115-66, at the Filoil Flying V Arena last Sunday, January 26.

The league’s second-ranking team owned the match from the very beginning with playmaker Penny Estacio marking the first tally and Aeron Bagunu leading their starter’s 12-0 run. It was only until the teams were 7 minutes into the game when Jordi Gomez de Liano bagged the Junior Maroons’ first point.

Even with UPIS' strong attempt to keep up with their opponent's offense, FEU easily dominated the first quarter, 31-9.

The Baby Tamaraws made the most out of their 22-point advantage as the second quarter began, tightening up their defense to counter back-to-back rebounds from Torres and three-pointers from Gomez de Liano and team captain Collin Dimaculangan, finishing the first half with 61-29 in favor of FEU.

UPIS continued to struggle as FEU maintained their aggressive play, further extending their gap to 47 by the end of the third quarter, 93-46.

Despite The Junior Maroons’ whole-hearted efforts, the Baby Tamaraws still prevailed with a 49-point lead, securing a twice-to-beat advantage along with the NU Bullpups.

“[It] wasn’t the outcome we want[ed]. We were taking good shots at first but weren’t making it and had some early turnovers that made an early lead for the opponent,“ said Dimaculangan after their sorry defeat.

The Junior Maroons still have a lot to prove on the court, especially with players excelling individually such as league leaders Torres and Aldous Torculas standing first in scoring and rebounds respectively, Sebastian Jacob sixth in blocks, Jelo Canillas seventh in rebounds, Dimaculangan seventh and Gomez de Liano ninth in three-point field goal percentage.

Their next chance to claim their first win will be up against Adamson High School tomorrow, January 29, at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

The UPIS Junior Maroons lost in their third game of the second round against Ateneo's Blue Eaglets with a score of 104-84 last Wednesday, January 22, at the FilOil Flying V Center Arena in San Juan, Metro Manila.

The first quarter was a close fight between the two, where the score was 21-20.

The Junior Maroons weren’t far behind at the end of the second quarter, scoring 48-44.

But as the second half made its way in, the Blue Eaglets became more ferocious by outplaying them and making sure that they will gain points. Because of this, they extended the lead to 77-62.

The last quarter saw the Blue Eaglets charging way ahead sealing the game with a final score of 104-84.

The Blue Eaglets consistently kept on shooting every time they had their hands on the ball. They also didn’t fail to take their chances to pass the ball to their unguarded team mate, free to shoot.

The Junior Maroons, often stole the ball from the Blue Eaglets when they were passing the ball to their fellow teammates.

When asked about their plan to raise the team from the bottom of the rankings, team captain Collin Dimaculangan said, “We keep on working in practice. Just trust our coaches."

The Junior Fighting Maroons Basketball Team’s struggles this UAAP season continue.

The Junior Maroons suffered a blowout loss against the Tiger Cubs, 87-63, on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan, Metro Manila.

For this game, UPIS slotted Abel Lopez in the starting lineup instead of the usual Jordi Gomez de Liaño.

The game was relatively close at the beginning but a 16-5 run at the end of the first quarter

gave UST a 15-point lead, 29-14.

The Tiger Cubs continued to charge at the Junior Maroons with ferocity, starting the second quarter with a 14-4 run that extended their lead to 25. UPIS quickly struck back with a personal 7-0 run by Gomez de Liaño and a three-pointer from Ray Torres. UST regrouped and entered halftime with a 20-point lead.

The complexion of the game did not change even after the halftime break. Although UPIS managed to outscore UST by 2 points in the third quarter, it ultimately did not matter as the Tiger Cubs did not relinquish the lead even once. The game ended with a score of 87-63 in favor of UST.

This win propels the Tiger Cubs to the third seed of the tournament and leaves the Junior Maroons winless with only 5 games left to play before the playoffs begin.

UST dominated the paint, outscoring UPIS by 24 points down there and grabbing 26 more boards than the Junior Maroons. Both teams were almost even in their amount of turnovers but it was the Tiger Cubs who were able to capitalize on their opponents’ mistakes, scoring 26 points off turnovers compared to the Junior Maroons’ 11.

When asked about the game, team captain Collin Dimaculangan said “[This game was] a learning experience para sa team namin. Kailangan pa namin palakasin ang rebounding namin at defense namin.”

The Junior Maroons will continue to seek their first win of the tournament in the Battle for Katipunan against the Blue Eaglets on Wednesday, 9 am.

Naging mahirap sa UPIS Junior Fighting Maroons Basketball Team (JFMBT) na matalo ang De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) sa unang laro nila sa UAAP Season 82 sa Paco Arena noong Nobyembre 13.

Nagpalitang ng puntos ang dalawang koponan hanggang sa kalagitnaan ng unang kwarter. Unti-unting umabante ang DLSZ mula sa 15-10 na score hanggang umabot na ito sa 26-10 sa huling dalawang minuto. Sa kulang-kulang dalawang minuto, nakakuha ng apat na puntos ang UPIS kumpara sa pitong puntos ng DLSZ. Sa pagtunog ng buzzer, natapos ang unang kuwarter sa score na 33-14.

Nagsimula ang ikalawang kwarter sa isa na namang run ng DLSZ na nagpalobo ng lamang nila sa UPIS sa score na 39-14 sa ikawalong minuto ng 2nd kwarter. Sinagot ito ng panandaliang run ng UPIS sa huling limang minuto kung saan nakakuha sila ng 11 na sunod-sunod na puntos. Ngunit paglapit ng huling dalawang minuto ng laro, nagpalitan na lamang ang pagpuntos ng dalawang koponan, at natapos ang unang half ng laro sa score na 50-36 na abante ang DLSZ.

Nagpatuloy ang bakbakan sa ikatlong kwarter kung saan muling nagpalitan ng puntos ang dalawang team hanggang sa dulo ng kwarter. Nagkaroon muli ng panandaliang run ang DLSZ at UPIS at natapos ang ikatlong kwarter sa score na 68-60 na lamang pa rin ang DLSZ.

Sa huling kwarter ng laro ay hindi na nakalapit ang UPIS sa DLSZ at tumaas ang agwat ng dalawang koponan sa 13 puntos. Tinangka ng UPIS na makabalik sa laro pero sa bawat puntos ng UPIS ay nakakasagot rin ng puntos ang DLSZ. Kaya sa huli ay natalo ang UPIS laban sa DLSZ sa score ng 84-72.

Nakamit ng University of the Philippines Integrated School Varsity Swimming Team (UPISVST) ang ikalawang gantimpala sa juniors girl’s category at ikalimang gantimpala sa boy’s category ng UAAP Season 82 na ginanap noong Oktubre 17-20 sa Trace College, Los Baños.

Sa kabuuan, nag-uwi ang UPISVST ng apat na ginto, limang pilak, at anim na tansong medalya sa mga individual events. Samantalang sa group category, nakakuha ang koponan ng apat na tanso.

"Sobrang saya as in kasi matagal na gusto talaga naming umakyat sa ranks at sobrang proud ako sa lahat ng mga ka-team ko, not only the girls team but the whole team, kasi nagawa naming mag-second place kahit na nawalan kami ng pool. Sobrang proud ako sa team na ito dahil lahat kami, we all did our part para maging ganito kasaya at successful ang UAAP na ito at ang saya rin na sa last year ko ng pags-swim sa high school, na-witness ko na mag-second place ang UPISVST, nakakakilig," sabi ni Rodgers.

May pagkakataon din na nagkaroon sila ng hamon.

"Nahihirapan kami sa training sched dahil wala kaming sariling pool at yung oras lang na pwede kami sa celeb ay 7-9. About sa UAAP naman, nung first day napadami ang chlorine sa pool kaya gabi na ginawa para hindi mag-extend ng day tulad nung last time. So ayun sobrang di ko ineexpect na magkaka-medal ako dahil ang lalakas ng mga kalaban ko at ang tatangkad nila akala ko yung makukuha ko lang ay galing sa relay but no, if there's a will, there's a way. Tamang mind set lang, at dapat gusto mo ginagawa mo at determinado ka para gawin iyon para ma-achieve mo goal mo, " pagbabahagi ni Joves.

"Isa pang hamon ay yung kung paano mas magiging bonded ang team kasi nga meron kaming mga swimmers nasa separate club nagte-train at para masolusyunan iyon, ay nagkaroon kami ng team building event at ng mga fundraising event na rin para somehow ay nagsasama-sama pa rin kaming lahat at mas lalo ko pang naramdaman na naging mas close ang isa’t isa sa team noong UAAP na rin mismo. Na-feel ko dun na bawat isa talaga nakisama at tumulong sa isa’t isa in any way that they can, mapa-emotional support pa man yan or iba pa," dagdag ni  Rodgers.

The UPIS Girls’ Volleyball Team (UPISGVT) drop to 0-10 after getting demolished by the National University (NU) Lady Bullpups, 19-25, 11-25, 10-25, on their tenth game of UAAP Season 82 last October 16 at Paco Arena, Manila.

Bea Lopez, Jeulyanna Ferrer, Kina Dela Cruz, Karla Concepcion, Angela Jackson, Alliah Omar, and Libero Yesha Capistrano went up against the Bullpups’ starters.

The Maroons delivered attack points, taking advantage of the first quarter of the first set. Both teams delivered outstanding receptions but the Lady Bullpups’ performance outweighed the Maroons’, ending the set with 19-25.

It was an error-filled second set for the Maroons but they continued to fight to keep up with NU’s booming attacks but still lost the second set with an even greater deficit from the first, 11-25.

The Maroons continued to struggle with maintaining their defense in the third set. This turned the game into a descending ride for the girls and ending at a 15-point disadvantage, 10-25.

Omar was recorded to be UPISGVT’s Best Scorer of the game, contributing 6 points and 25 assists overall. She and Kyle Mararac were the eldest players in the team for that game with the absence of seniors Trixie Badong and Team Captain Alizia Marquez.

The UPIS Girls’ Volleyball Team (UPISGVT) sink to 0-9 after straight-set sweeps by Far Eastern University (FEU), 22-25, 13-25, 18-25, and the University of the East (UE), 13-25, 17-25, 20-25, on their second and third game of UAAP Season 82 Round 2 last October 9 at Paco Arena and October 13 at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Their match against the Baby Tamaraws began with Bea Lopez, Jeulyanna Ferrer, Alliah Omar, Frances De Guia, Angela Jackson, Kina Dela Cruz, and Libero Yesha Capistrano ready to give their all on the court.

Outstanding receptions were delivered by both teams but FEU still prevailed in the first set, 22-25, despite the Maroons’ whole-hearted efforts.

The Maroons lost the second set by a landslide, 13-25. Reception became difficult for them because of the booming spikes from the FEU Tamaraws. The set ended with Baby Tamaraws still on the lead.

UPISGVT fought harder to redeem themselves in the last set, but the Baby Tamaraws still triumphed with a 7-point lead, 18-25.

The Maroons’ starters against the Junior Lady Warriors were Team Captain Alizia Marquez, Omar, Jackson, Ferrer, Lopez, and Capistrano. The team held on to five of their starters, substituting Senior Trixie Badong for Omar, up until their last set.

The first set defense of the Maroons was no match for the Junior Lady Warriors' attacks but despite losing the first set, 13-25, UPIS improved and was able to shrink the deficit but still dropped the second set, 17-25.

The game’s last set stood out the most with UPISGVT making more challenging plays to make the most points out of all three sets. The girls delivered more aggressive attacks but made no successful blocks throughout the game, still allowing UE to triumph, 20-25.

“The most challenging part of the game for me was being able to recover from a 9 point deficit in the first quarter. Our communication didn't seem to work that well on the court last Sunday until the latter part of the game. On training, [though] wala ako [because] of internship, I hope they will work on their communication and their ability to bounce back after making errors and after our opponent make points,” Team Captain Marquez shared. //by Magan Basilio and Jelena Evangelista

The UPIS Girls’ Volleyball Team (UPISGVT) dropped to a 0-7 standing after being devoured by the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Junior Tigresses in straight sets, 18-25, 18-25, 14-25, on October 5, 2019 at Paco Arena, Manila.

Set one started slow for the Junior Maroons with Team Captain Alizia Marquez and senior Trixie Badong missing the game because of the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT).

The first point went to UPIS with a net touch error from UST. UPIS gained points from UST’s attack errors but the Maroons’ errors also increased. This went on and on until they reached the final score of 18-25 with UST in the lead.

Their play for the second set wasn’t much different from their first. The same number of errors and points for both teams were executed by the same set of players.

The Junior Maroons scored points from heart-stopping rallies at the first quarter of the second set. Although UPIS took the lead,, their errors gave an opportunity for the Thomasians to garner many attacking points thus ending the set with a score of 18-25.

Attacking points from UST boomed in the third set while UPIS struggled to make points. The UPISGVT tried to catch up but they were dragged down by their constant service errors at the crucial part of the third set, ending the final set with a score of 14-25. //by Jelena Evangelista

Nauwi sa standing na 0-6 ang University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Girls Volleyball Team matapos ang kanilang huling laro sa 1st round ng UAAP Season 82 laban sa Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraw Girls na may iskor na 19-25, 18-25, 23-25, noong Setyembre 29 sa Blue Eagle Gym.

Naging dikit ang laban sa unang set ng laro. Nakasabay ang UPIS sa lakas ng FEU ngunit hindi ito sapat kaya't natapos ang set sa iskor na 19-25 pabor sa FEU.

Sa simula pa lamang ng pangalawang set ay umarangkada na ang FEU. Tila nagulat ang Maroons sa mabibilis na atake ng Tamaraws, na maaaring naging dahilan ng sunod-sunod na error ng UPIS.

Naging 13 ang lamang ng FEU sa UPIS sa iskor na 6-19. Bumawi ang UPIS at napaliit ang lamang sa iskor na 17-23.

Hindi pa rin nagpasindak ang Tamaraws at nakuha nila ang pangalawang set sa puntos na 18-25.

Binuhos ng UPIS ang kanilang makakaya sa huling set at naging dikit ang laban sa pamamagitan ng mas agresibong mga pagpalo. Dito na rin sila nagpakawala ng sunod-sunod na service aces upang matapatan ang FEU. Ilang beses ding nagtabla ang iskor ng dalawang koponan ngunit nanaig pa rin sa huli ang FEU sa iskor na 23-25.

Nanalo ang FEU, 3-0 sa kanilang pagtutuos.

"Para sakin, yung game namin last Sunday ay isang improvement from our past games.
