Literary: Bakante

Literary: Dog Days

Today I have gone through a dozen slumbers
Only waking to still be this somber
Tried to focus on various distractions
While impatiently seeking for anyone’s attention.
Been staring at nothing for almost an hour,
With nothing to do, I can’t help but wonder,
Why is my life filled with so much gray?
And what could possibly be my own purpose?
Why do I keep chasing the things I can’t even see,
Eating the tasteless treats that I’ll never really need,
And trying anything until someone notices me?
The time was even more filled with questions and inactivity,
Suddenly, the door opened and I was struck with familiarity
My heart raced knowing she finally came back for me!
I eagerly greeted her through the wagging of my tail
But she had no response and just looked a bit stale.
So, I jumped and hugged her, making her stumble
She laid on the floor then laughed because of the fall
Then sat straight and patted my head with a smile
Maybe making her happy has been my purpose all the while.

Literary: Diet

I have only one new year’s resolution: to lose some weight.

Every new year's eve, teasing is what I receive; hushed whispers from my cousins and loud jeers from my aunts. Pointing fingers at me, they ask, “Aren’t you a ballet dancer? Your thighs are getting a little bigger. Why don’t you put down that ham?”

My ballet teacher also asked me to lose some weight in order to be part of our upcoming recital.

The diet wasn’t successful.

A year after my “diet”, I faced more criticisms and struggled in keeping up with my ballet classes. I started restricting what I eat; anything with carbohydrates and fats was off limits. Only the thought of “I have to be thinner” ran through my mind, day and night.

It didn’t help that most of the boys in high school teased me. My friends told me that they were just joking, but as time passed, my confidence and self-esteem was drained from me.

The diet finally worked!

I lost more weight than expected. I used the entire summer break to lose weight. At first, I was so exhausted, but I couldn’t give up. I kept myself inspired by thinking of all the compliments I’ll be receiving when I’m skinny. But most of all, I wanted to show the people who teased me that they were wrong, and it worked.

The teasing stopped and turned into compliments.

I can’t stop. I have to diet.

It’s been a year since the last time I wrote here and a lot has happened since then. People are finally complimenting me for changing myself, but still, they are detesting me for changing too much. I try to ignore whatever they’re saying and just focus on how I can further improve myself. As a guy, I know I’m not supposed to care about these kinds of things, but I can’t help thinking about it. We have a recital in a few weeks and I have to lose more weight so I can execute our routine perfectly. I know that my methods are not what doctors would recommend, but it’s the only thing that works, and that’s good enough for me.

Age: 17 years old
Target weight: 64 kg Current Weight: 76.2 kg

The diet was too much. I passed out, they rushed me to the hospital and I finally stopped.

Everyone knew what was wrong with me and by the time I also did, it was too late. The memory of being in the hospital and seeing their worried looks turn into disappointment keeps playing in my head. I wish I could say that everything fell into place after the incident and that I finally learned from my mistakes, but instead, I just made more of them. The thing I used to resent the most comforted me during times of need. I swallowed my pride and indulged every bite of food that has come before me, for it was the only thing that didn’t judge me for what I have become.

I grew twice my size, lost a lot of things like my ballet class, some of my friendships, and even my self-control. Despite all this, my fall from grace also made me gain a different perspective and feel a little unchained from my previous toxic actions.

5 years have passed since I started to change myself.

I have come a long way ever since I have made that decision, and I still don’t know if I used to be better back then. My journey had many ups and downs, but all I know is that I feel good with the way I am now, and that’s good enough for me.

Literary: False Applause

The lights, the camera, and the action
Opened my eyes to a new dimension,
Trapped me in a world of beautiful fiction,
As I became desired by their momentary affection
And exhausted from my own ambition

The cause of everything was a youthful smile
The cost of it, I didn’t think of for a while
I beguiled all the right guys
Who led me to paths I never knew were vile

Then cameras called and I quickly reacted
With all emotions I passionately depicted
I became one with the art I then perfected
With a thunderous applause, they all responded.

I loved every second of the art I performed
“But they only like you for your looks,” they informed
I don’t even have to make a single sound
To freeze and flash the youthful smile around
Was the only way, for me to be noticed and found

For the rest of my years, I acted with restriction
Waving my hands demanding for attention
The applause became the only thing that mattered
I have reached my dreams yet I feel shattered

More and more wrinkles started to show on my face
Soon, less and less words have been said to me
Disinterest started filling every room and another
Everyone suddenly stopped and started not to bother.

The lights, the camera and the action
Used to remind me of dreams and satisfaction
Now it only makes me question
Why have I forsaken my art for attention?

Literary: Ahon

Walang katapusang asul
Ang tanging namamataan.
Palutang-lutang lamang
Sa gitna ng kawalan.
Dama ang hapdi ng araw
Na mula sa mga alapaap
At malayelong lamig ng dagat
Sa katawan ko’y umaakap.

Samu’t saring pangangamba,
Sa isip ko’y bumabalot.
Hindi malaman ang gagawi’t
Nilalamon na ng takot.
Na baka langit ay lumuha,
At sa aki’y may biglang kumuha.
O mula sa mga misteryo sa ilalim,
Na bigla na lamang hihila sa akin.
Katawan ko’y bumibigat
Paghinga ko’y bumibilis
Mga mata ay umiiyak
Paghihirap ay ‘di na matiis.

Nang malapit nang bumigay
Ang dagat ay pinagmasdan
Kumalma ang sarili
At saka naliwanagan
Mga iniisip ay inayos
At sitwasyo’y pinag-isipan
Utak ay pinauna’t ginamit
Takot ay pilit pinangibabawan.

Katawan ay inilubog
Mga pangamba’y di ininda,
Ang kagustuhang mabuhay
Ang tangi kong inuna.
Patuloy na lumalangoy
Sa kabila ng alon
Patuloy lamang lalangoy
Dahil kailangang umahon.

Literary (Submission): Maroon Star x Another Cheerleader

Maroon Star

I’m a player
She’s a cheerleader
In each game, from my eye’s corner
I see her
Blooming as ever

I hear her voice
Cheering for the maroons
And from that moment
I fell in love even more

Admiring her is not a choice
As she danced with pure passion and poise
Her team captured my attention
But she captivated my heart

I admire her for who she is
Even though she’s a bit far
And when I look at her, my cheerleader
I can clearly see my maroon star

Another Cheerleader

He was a player, so I didn’t bother
For I was the type of girl
Who just stays in the corner

So I never really pictured
The thought of us together
Knowing his affections
Were for another cheerleader.

I saw him play and cheer for the scores
I still wonder how and why,
I became the one he adores.
For I always thought
That his stares and glances
were only because
He likes a cheerleader’s dance.

Funny how naïve one can be,
And how hard it was
For me not to easily see.
I think its sweet of him to say such things.

I still can’t imagine us together,
since my heart has been stolen by another
And she’s my fellow cheerleader.

MEMO 1
To: You
From: Cupid
Date: February 1, 2018
Subject: New Friend
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I noticed that I have struck you with my arrow before, yet here you are, still alone and moping around because you have no “love” of your life. I have already given you one, but we both know you’re just not doing anything about it.

That’s why I decided to guide and help you with love, just to make things go a little faster. So please bear with me and expect more memos and some bizarre situations to come up.

MEMO 2
To: You
From: Cupid
Date: February 5, 2018
Subject: Quick reminder
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In case you forgot, I’m here to remind you that:

(1) I am personally here to help you;
(2) I don’t do this very often; and
(3) I need your cooperation for this to work.

So, it would be nice if you’d stop ignoring my messages and efforts for you to find love. It is very obvious that the strange things that are happening to you lately are not coincidences, but are actually ways for you two to be together. And all you have to do is follow me and your heart.
Now if you don’t mind, please start acting and living in favor of love.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I appreciate that you are following my ways and pieces of advice. I am proud of what you have done these past few days and I am ecstatic to see that you two are now close. But still, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

We both know how you feel, and we both know that all you need to do is say it. You’ve come this far, there is no use in hiding your affections.

This is my big day, so I’ll keep this short.

Do it now for the love of Love.

MEMO 5
To: You
From: Cupid
Date: February 15, 2018
Subject: A reminder
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I saw what happened, but I am unsure of what happened to you. If the reason why you didn’t confess is that you’re afraid, then I cannot argue with you. You have every right to be scared of love for it is notoriously known to hurt people. And I can’t say that you won’t get hurt with this love, but I can guarantee that it can bring you happiness.

If you want to take a break from all of this for now then I’m not stopping you. Just know that I won’t give up on you for you deserve to give and receive love.

I did it.

Thank you for making me do this and not giving up on me even if I did. I have yet to know what the answer will be or what this will become.
But I am already more than happy that I have loved.

Literary: Mirror, Mirror

Mirror, mirror
on the wall
I’d like to be
as fair as them all
For I despise
that reflection
and it can use
a little correction.

Mirror, mirror
look at me
It takes work
To attain beauty
I can only ask
For a make over
So that I can be
The one they’ll prefer.

Mirror, mirror
I’m tired of you
Trying so hard
Yet you always
End up blue
For I know
The things I do
Will never be
Good for you.

Mirror, mirror
who are you?
Do you even know
What you got me into
All the things
You have changed
Just got you worse
And made you strange.

Mirror, mirror
it’s been a while
since I looked at you
With that smile.
You’ve tried so hard
To be someone you’re not
Now lessons learned
Love what you’ve got.

Literary: Pagpapasko sa Amin

Pagbibigay
Nandito na ang malaking biyaya ng Pasko!
Tuloy na tuloy na ang selebrasyong ito
Nakatanggap na ng bonus ang ama ko
Matutustusan na rin ang aming mga gusto

Pamimili
Mabibili na ang laruang robot na minimithi
Maibibigay na rin ang sapatos na hinihingi
Kumukutitap na presyo sa’ming mga mata
Bibili nang bibili hanggang mabutas ang bulsa

Pagbabakasyon
Sa pagdating ng mahabang bakasyon
Sa mall lang matatagpuan ang aming lokasyon
Kakain at gagastos sa kung saan-saan
Mahalaga lang naman’y kami’y masiyahan

Panreregalo
Maghahanap ng panregalo ang aking ina
Ibibigay niya ‘to sa lahat ng kanyang kakilala
Bobonggahan ang bigay kung para sa pamilya
At mumurahin lang kung para sa iba

Pagsasama-sama

Maging magalang at mag-“po” at “opo”
Sapagkat kailangan makakuha ng aginaldo
At tumakas agad pagkatanggap nito

Pagkain

Pagsasaya
Agad kaming napatingin sa bandang kanan
Naroon ang mga tiya at tiyuhing nagsasayawan
Isama pa ang nasa bidyoke’t nagkakantahan
Nakakabasag-tengang mga tugtugan!

Pag-aayos
‘Di rin pala nawala ang fashion show
Magagarang damit at mamahaling sapatos itinatampok
Patok na patok sa mga mata-pobreng tao
Nagpapayabangan ng kani-kanilang luho

Pangangaroling
“Saylent nayt, huli nayt” karoling namin

Literary: Kinahong Telebisyon

Pinepresenta ang bagong telenobela
Na muling ipatatangkilik sa masa
Halina’t subaybayan ang programa
Panoorin ang kanilang gasgas na istorya

Tampok ang pinakabaguhang artista
Na kinababaliwan ng mga tagahanga
Kasama’y mga batikan na sa industriya
Ngunit nasa likod lamang bilang suporta

Magsisimula sa burarang ina
Ginagawa lahat upang anak ay mawala
Mapapalitan, ipaaampon, o aagawin ng iba
Basta bata’y mahiwalay lamang sa kanya

Sa isang linggong pagpapalabas
Bida’y tatanda na rin sa wakas
Makakatagpo ang sikat na kapareha,
At ang istasyon ay kikita ng pera

Sunod ay papasok ang kontrabida
Pilit aagawan at tatarayan ang bida
Maglalaitan, magsasabunutan, at magsasampalan

Api noon at kawawa, mayaman palang eredera

Minadaling wakas upang istorya’y mairaos

Literary: A Single Smile

A day can go from bad to worse,
Can make you feel unlucky to cursed.
Can get you down and cause a frown,
Or simply leave you bound to ground.

But at times like this I have noticed,
Something like a hypothesis
Even if you’re blue for a while
No day ends without a single smile.

It can be a from any moment,
That may have made you grin,
A tiny titter from a win,
A shy giggle from a mishap,
A loud laugh you just can’t stop.
A silly joke that made you chuckle,
Or from someone’s funny chortle.

If in the end of the day you still feel bad
Just count the beaming moments you had.
And remember all the reasons why
It gave you that single smile.

Literary: The Leader Pattern x The Fractured Hourglass

The Leader Pattern

Bring in a leader, who can win the heart of masses,
Then divide the nation to different social classes.
Limit their rights as they slowly bathe in despair
Make them suffer while they’re still unaware.

By the time they realize what’s going on,
Take no guilt and blame it to the bygone.
Now flash a smile and keep the issue silent,
Tone it down before they become violent.

If it doesn’t work then change your goal,
Spread some fright and take control.
Until the day the masses will take no more,
And hopefully start their awaited uproar.

A large group of scorned will come together,
And the daunted will imitate to feel safer.
They’ll ruin the leader they strongly hated,
With the words, stones and lies they created.

Once the feud’s over the nation will raise their glasses,
Then bring in a leader who won the heart of masses.

The Fractured Hourglass

Bring on the leader who lost the nation’s good graces
Who turned his back on our land of different colors and faces
He may antagonize, demoralize, and give us the end of the rope
Our desolation is key to unchain hope

See, don’t hastily believe, and seek the truth
The guilt of on-lookers, no fancy words will soothe
Brandish a grin as you voice it out loud
See him shake in the power of a woken crowd

If it doesn’t work, then what better reason to work harder
His eagerness to deceive must be met with challenging ardor
Because we, the people will take no more
Get up and ask them, “Wasn’t there an oath you swore?”

But it doesn’t end with just one dreadful person
Society’s veins are corrupted with despair’s poison
They’ll ruin each other, thinking that they’re with us in this fight
When the “plans” they “planned” for the nation, never saw daylight

This cycle’s outworn, the sand’s out from the hourglasses
It’s time to bring in people who’ll be the hope of the masses

Literary: A Life of Presentation

Well-dressed people, fancy table tops
She makes her way to the party
Dressed by every costly shop
With her circle of friends,
Competing with one another.
Always sitting side by side,
But never really together
She fakes a smile and forces a laugh,
Pretending to look happy in each photograph
Convincing everyone that she’s having fun,
She has made too many connections,
But never had a real one

She sighs as she lives the life of presentation
Everything’s perfect except for her reflection.

Literary (Submission): Love's Letter

To you who would like to love,

Greetings! It is I, Love, writing you a letter,
Hoping to explain myself better.
I have been receiving a lot of negativity,
So let’s take this moment for some clarity.

Right now, I know you doubt my existence
Because I don’t comply with your insistence.
You may think I’m spontaneous but I have plans
So please forgive me and just forget your demands.

You’re looking for a partner with all the gifts?
You should know I look for people, not walking checklists.
I’m not making you a cynic or unromantic
I may be magical but let’s keep it realistic.

You won’t know when and where I’ll appear or happen,
But I can assure you that I won’t be mistaken.
So be ready, I may come when you least expect
Or be gone when you least suspect.

Now I don’t want to rush things through
I just want to be right for you
If you ever feel like you’ll never find me
Just remember that I always know where you’ll be.

Love,
Love
