Volleybelles get back-to-back wins
The UPIS Girls Volleyball Team won two games in a row at the Diliman Games last September 8 at the UP Gym.They got their first win by default against the College of Mass Communication and clinched their second victory by defeating the team of Asian Institute of Technology and College of Arts and Letters (AIT-CAL).
UPIS Volleybelles dominated the first set and won it easily, 25 – 13.
After a very good performance in the 1st set, the girls lost their focus entering the 2nd set allowing AIT-CAL to win the set, 25-22, and tying the game, 1 set apiece.
AIT-CAL continued their run and took the lead early in the deciding set. But after numerous service aces from Trizia Badong, UPIS was able to strike back and win it, 15 – 12. ● by Dara Lilang, Eric Madriaga
UPIS wins RowBoatics championship
The UPIS team composed of Rafael Luis Aenlle of 9-Neon, Maragtas VII Sano Amante, and Harold Michael Prudencio of 9-Argon won 1st place in the RowBoatics competition at the UP College of Engineering last September 1.RowBoatics is an inter-high school machine competition which challenges the students to design and build a rubber band-powered watercraft. The event is hosted by the UP Gears and Pinions, a mechanical engineering organization in celebration of their 57th year.
Each team was given only 2 hours to produce a watercraft. The organizer provided them with 4 rubber bands, a ruler, a pair of scissors, masking tape, 10 drinking straws, a long folder, a plastic folder, a marker, 2-feet of steel wire, 10 barbeque sticks, cutter, glue gun with 4 glue sticks, 2 pencils, and Styrofoam.
Aenlle, Amante, and Prudencio were declared champions after scoring 94% with their time of 1.94 seconds. Another UPIS team composed of Karmela Mae Gabriel from 9-Xenon, Joshua Caesar Lorenzo of 9-Argon, and Luis Fernando Raynon Jr. of 9-Neon placed 7th. ● by Arielle Gabriel, Benjo Hernandez, and Eric Madriaga
Gelera bags bronze in Taiwan math tilt
Christian Gelera from 6-Garnet won a bronze medal in the individual category of the Annual Taiwan Elementary International Math Contest 2012 held at the Affiliated Seniors High School in Taipei, Taiwan last July 25.The Philippines sent twelve representatives in the contest. To qualify, Gelera had to join a competition against different schools in the Philippines. He and the other chosen participants attended a summer camp and continued to train until June.
Gelera and the Philippine team, which ranked first runner-up in the group category, competed against 31 other teams from different countries all over Asia.

UPIS Pep welcomes new coach

The squad warmly welcomed their new coach who aims to teach and improve basic cheering skills and polish gymnastic techniques. She also plans to involve the Pep Squad in more interschool activities.
“Siyempre magaling siya kasi team captain siya ng UP Pep Squad dati. Okay siya magturo. Inamin niya rin na more on stunts and gymnastics ang kaya niyang ituro kaysa dance talaga,” pep squad member Christel Manalo said of their new coach.
“Medyo strict pero all in all, okay naman po,” adds head drummer Gaea Pelaez.
