News: UPIS student, nabiktima ng street children


Nagtamo ng minor injury ang isang mag-aaral ng Grado 5 matapos hampasin ng street children sa tapat ng UP School of Economics noong nakaraang linggo.

Pauwi na ang biktima at ilang kamag-aral nito nang paluin ng kawayan sa batok ang nabanggit na estudyante. Ayon sa mga mag-aaral, sinubukan pang batuhin ng street children ang grupo nila nang makita at mapigilan ito ng isang dumaarang concerned parent mula sa K-2.

Bago ang insidente, nauna nang inagaw ng street children ang nahulog na pera ng biktima. “Pagkatapos po naming maglaro sa sunken garden, nawala po ‘yung pera ng isa kong kaklase at nakita po naming pinulot ng street children. ‘Di na po namin pinatulan pero po nung pauwi na kami bigla na lang akong hinampas sa ulo,” pagbabahagi ng biktima ukol sa insidente.

Bagong 3-6 canteen, bukas na



Pormal nang binuksan ang Grade 3-6 Canteen noong Agosto 2, 2016.

Sinimulan ang konstruksyon nito noong Nobyembre 2015 at natapos nitong lamang Marso 2016. Naipatayo ang pasilidad na ito sa pondong nagmula sa Office of the Chancellor. Dinisenyo naman ng Office of the Campus Architect.

Doronila, 1 of 5 outstanding KAB scouts in NCR

Paolo Doronila of grade 3-Dagat ranked 4th in the NCR search for outstanding KAB Scouts held at the University of Makati last September 21.

According to Ms. Cha Guerrero, one of the kawan leaders, after going through the process, he was announced 3rd runner-up and was also awarded Best in Formal Attire. Doronila competed against 12 other scouts.

Stars and Juniors hold annual investiture

The UPIS Star Scouts and Junior Girl Scouts held their annual investiture ceremonies last Sept. 24 at the Multi-Purpose Hall.

The Stars from Grades 1-3 had a joint investiture led by troop leaders Ms. Angela Macaraeg and Ms. Sharon Aguila. Later in the afternoon, the Juniors led by Ms. Glaiza Cruz invested 11 new scouts and rededicated more than 50 former junior girl scouts.


Both programs were opened by Dr. Ronaldo San Jose, UPIS principal. In her message, the guest speaker, Mrs. Estela Gonzales from the GSP Council, commended the UPIS scouts for their dedication and encouraged them to be continue being active in scouting activities.


All in all, six new parent and troop leaders were invested in both Star and Junior Scouts namely Bernadette Angeles, Christie Manantab, Suzanne Licuanan, Mary Justine Amonoy, Helanay Ariola and Patricia Santos. ● by Rya Ducusin and Joanna Pagulayan

Gelera brings home Math Wiz title

Christian Philip Gelera of 6-Garnet was crowned the 2012 Little Math Wizard during the 3rd Region-wide Search for the Little Math Wizard held at the UP Math Building last September 15.

Gelera bested all his competitors in the four-round competition, making him the over-all champion.

Nathan Arthur Banatao, Zeidrich Monares, John Henry Marquez, Sean Albert Gelera and Jastin Cedric Cruz also joined the grade 5 level but only Banatao, Monares and Marquez qualified for the semi-final round.

Grado 3-6 rumampa sa Multi

Bilang bahagi ng selebrasyon ng Buwan ng Wika 2012, ginanap ang Rampa ng grado 3-6 sa ganap na 11:30 ng umaga sa Multi-Purpose Hall noong Setyembre 5.

Ipinakita ng mga mag-aaral ang iba’t ibang kasuotan sa Pilipinas. Para sa grado 3, kasuotan mula sa Katagalugan, kasuotan naman mula sa Mindanao ang para sa grado 4, kasuotan mula sa Silangang Pilipinas para sa grado 5 at kasuotan mula sa Visayas para sa grado 6.

Sa grado 3, ang nakakuha ng unang gantimpala ay sina Rochelle Viñas at Jabez Prayer Bote ng 3-Sapa.

Para naman sa grado 4, sina Dominique Trinidad at Aeschylus Nario ng 4-Labanos ang nagkamit ng unang gantimpala.

Sina Roel Ramolete at Joyce Asuncion naman ng 5-Arayat ang itinanghal na panalo para sa grado 5.

Sina Kyle Ileto at Pauline Demetrio ng 6-Topaz ang nakasungkit ng unang premyo para naman sa grado 6. ● by Ada Bayobay and Aliyah Rojo

KA 3-6 outlines second quarter activities

The Kamag-Aral (KA) 3-6 has many activities lined up for the rest of the semester.

According to Prof. Michelle Sonza, KA 3-6 adviser, tickets for their Chocolate Raffle, the KA fundraiser for this semester, are being sold by members of the organization. At stake is a pound of Hershey's Chocolate for the 1st prize, Toblerone™ for the 2nd while a Crunch™ for the 3rd. The tentative draw date is on September 19.

The KA 3-6 officers are also preparing for UN day, an event to be held in October. It would feature a food fair wherein different kinds of delicacies from all over the world will be served by each section. There are also plans for a Teachers' Day celebration.

The 3-6 field trip, organized by the grade level coordinators, is also tentatively scheduled on October 1. ● by James Borja and Christian Boro

Banatao, Marquez win in Singapore math competition

Nathan Arthur Banatao and John Henry Marquez from grade 5-Arayat won gold and silver medals, respectively, in the 8th International Mathematics Contest held in Singapore last August 4.

They trained with the Mathematics Trainers Guild in preparation for the competition and competed against foreign students, all of whom are in their age group.

Gelera bags bronze in Taiwan math tilt

Christian Gelera from 6-Garnet won a bronze medal in the individual category of the Annual Taiwan Elementary International Math Contest 2012 held at the Affiliated Seniors High School in Taipei, Taiwan last July 25.

The Philippines sent twelve representatives in the contest. To qualify, Gelera had to join a competition against different schools in the Philippines. He and the other chosen participants attended a summer camp and continued to train until June.

Gelera and the Philippine team, which ranked first runner-up in the group category, competed against 31 other teams from different countries all over Asia.

UP Cherubim and Seraphim holds auditions

The UP Cherubim and Seraphim, the university’s official children’s choir, held auditions last July 12 and 19 at the UPIS High school Music Room.

Dr. Elena Rivera-Mirano, Dean of the College of Arts and Letters and conductor of the choir, watched 23 UPIS students from grades 3-6 show their singing talent and musical ability in the audition that consists of three parts—singing a song of their choice, vocalization, and rhythmic clapping.

Dr. Mirano will send out letters stating their acceptance as apprentices in the group.

Literary (Submission): Prof. Vargas is the best!

This cute poem was written by Prof. Ma. Lourdes Vargas' Grade 3 student. She gave it to her after their English class 2 weeks ago. It was originally written in pencil on a whole sheet of paper so we had to make a typography for a more legible copy.

Ginanap ang taunang investiture ng Girl Scouts of the Philippines ng UPIS sa Multi-Purpose Hall noong nakaraang Setyembre 9 kung saan itinalaga ang mga bagong senior scouts at bagong cadets habang ni-rededicate naman ang ibang scouts.

Nagbigay ng pambungad na pananalita si Dr. Ronaldo San Jose, ang prinsipal, at si Ma’am Lady Soledad Reodica na mula sa GSP Quezon City council tungkol sa tamang pagsasapuso ng pagiging isang scout .

Iba't ibang gawain sa team building ng Cadets 2012.
Matapos ang seremonya, nagkaroon ng isang team building activity ang mga cadet. Pinangunahan ito ni Ms. Karen Panol mula sa Eduk Inc.

Layunin ng team building na mabuo ang pagkakaisa at pagtutulungan sa bawat miyembro ng organisasyon. Kabilang din sa kanilang tungkulin ang pagpaplano at pagtatakda ng mga aktibidades para sa nalalapit na Senior Patrol Leadership Training (SPLT).

Ginanap naman ang investiture ng Junior Girl Scouts at Star Scouts noong Setyembre 12 sa Bulwagan. Bukod sa mga bagong scouts, itinalaga rin dito ang mga kasapi ng UPIS Junior GSP Patrol Committee na binubuo ng mga magulang at troop leader at pamumunuan ni Gng. Angelie Domingo.
