Honeyboys wins Battle of the Bands

With their rendition of Winter Wonderland and Huling Sayaw, the Honeyboys from Batch 2018 won first place in Space Jam, the annual Battle of the Bands (BotB), held last December 17.

The Honeyboys, composed of Rene Rollon, Blade Saliva, David de Layola, Bjorn Amargo, Franz Candido, and lone female member Faith Austria, bested six other bands including Batch 2014 bands Budaga and Ganband which came in second and third respectively.

Each band was required to perform at least two songs, one of those being a Christmas song. Faculty members Ms. Shiela Pineda and Ms Justine Amonoy, and UPIS Batch 2013 alums and BotB veterans Jerem Esguerra and Vince Quejada were the judges in the event. / by Hannah Atela, Bernadette Bagnes, Claire Diaz, and Angelique Liwag

XIV holds pre-UPCAT batch day-out

In preparation for the UPCAT last August 3 and 4, UPIS batch 2014 (XIV) held a batch day-out and pre-UPCAT activity last July 29 at the Multipurpose Hall.

Led by this year's Senior Council, the activity aims to be a stress-reliever and batch bonding to strengthen batch unity. The program included an Amazing Race which challenged the seniors' physical strength, creativity and team spirit.

Afterwards, Kevin Domingo and Archie Maramag of UP organization Lifebox gave tips on taking the state university’s admission test. Lastly, a prayer was said to bless the batch in taking different college admission tests. / by Shaila Fortajada, Czarina Sikat, and Alissa Villareal

UPIS wins RowBoatics championship

The UPIS team composed of Rafael Luis Aenlle of 9-Neon, Maragtas VII Sano Amante, and Harold Michael Prudencio of 9-Argon won 1st place in the RowBoatics competition at the UP College of Engineering last September 1.

RowBoatics is an inter-high school machine competition which challenges the students to design and build a rubber band-powered watercraft. The event is hosted by the UP Gears and Pinions, a mechanical engineering organization in celebration of their 57th year.

Each team was given only 2 hours to produce a watercraft. The organizer provided them with 4 rubber bands, a ruler, a pair of scissors, masking tape, 10 drinking straws, a long folder, a plastic folder, a marker, 2-feet of steel wire, 10 barbeque sticks, cutter, glue gun with 4 glue sticks, 2 pencils, and Styrofoam.

Aenlle, Amante, and Prudencio were declared champions after scoring 94% with their time of 1.94 seconds. UPIS Scrabble Team joins Milo Little Olympics

The UPIS 7-10 Scrabble Team joined the Milo Little Olympics Scrabble Tournament held in Marikina City last September 1.

The team is composed of juniors Diego Manansala, Angelo Nueva, and Regie dela Cruz, and sophomores Anthony Gososo, and Eric Rarugal.

The UPIS team went up against 16 other groups and came out as one of the Top 4 teams in the first four rounds of competition. They got a total of 10 wins in 16 rounds.

In preparation for the tournament, the team trained under the supervision of Michael Jude Tomamac, former UPIS Scrabble Club President.

The same participants will compete in the remaining 6 rounds of the tournament this coming Saturday, September 8. ● by Reagene Fernando and Patricia Lim

SF Presents McFairy: A Twisted Fairytale

As a final requirement, the UPIS Speech Fundamentals Class held its culminating activity program last October 17 at the Multipurpose hall.

The program's purpose was to create a platform for UPIS students to showcase their talent and creativity in public speaking.

Patricia Enriquez and Noraiza Coquilla of 7-Jupiter covered Selena Gomez's Who Says and Pink's Perfect. Miguel Bongato from 10-Narra presented his monologue of Lancelot's piece: Act 2, Scene 2 from Shakespeare's novel Merchant of Venice while Red Rivera from 8-Butterfly orally expressed her own interpretation of Daren Criss' No Way.

Finally, the SF Class performed a musical play titled McFairy: A Twisted Fairytale, wherein Peter Pan, one of the main characters, tries to change the way how the stories ended.

The characters Peter Pan, Cinderella, Prince, Belle and Beast, Shrek, Fiona, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Flash and Quasimodo were played by Jomike Gemora, Deneese Montalbo, Yzrael Dumaguing, Red Rivera, Emerson Sandoval, Anthony Dacoco, Alissa Villareal, Regina Garcia, Jean Gutierrez, Jaime Mejia and, Kyle de Guzman respectively.

“Proud ako sa kanila dahil “fruit of labor” nila ‘yon,” said SF class adviser Ms. Sheila Fernandez. The class’ idea to conceptualize a play with twisted fairytale endings was well executed, and when they were asked what were they able to learn from the experience, Red Rivera replied, “Kahit magulo ang buhay, there’s always a fairytale!”

Napanalunan ng UPIS ang ikatlong puwesto sa GeoQuiz na ginanap sa National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), UP Diliman noong Oktubre 1.

Ang GeoQuiz ay isang pautakan tungkol sa Earth Science na nahahati sa dalawang bahagi. Ang unang parte ng kompetisyon ay isang individual test na binubuo ng 60 items at ang ikalawa naman ay isang group quiz na mayroong 30 items.

82 puntos ang naiskor ng mga kinatawan ng UPIS na sina Monty Banta, Mariel de Luna, Zena del Mundo, at Jasper Valentino.

Siyam na paaralan ang kalahok sa nasabing pautakan. Nakamit ng Philippine Science High School Bicol Region ang unang gantimpala, samantalang Rizal National High School naman ang pumangalawa.

Matagumpay na umuwi ang UPIS Varsity Swimming Team mula sa ginanap na UAAP Swimming Competition sa Trace College, Los Banos, Laguna noong Setyembre 22-25.

Nakuha ng UPIS Varsity Swimming Team Girls ang ikatlong pwesto sa pangkabuuan. Itinanghal rin na Rookie of the Year sa UAAP Season '74 si Pricila Aquino ng 7-Mercury na nagkamit ng 2 gold, 1 silver, at 3 bronze.

Sa individuals, nakuha ni Aquino ang gold sa 400m freestyle, silver sa 200m Freestyle, at bronze sa 200m Individual Medley at 800m Freestyle. Si Joy Rodgers ng 9-Silver ay nagkamit naman ng gold sa 50m at 100m Breaststroke.

Sa relays, nakuha ng team nina Aquino, Rodgers, Nina Bea Leis ng 9-Iron, at Jean Marne Gutierrez ng 8-Firefly ang gold sa 4x50 Freestyle.

Ang relay team naman nina Leis, Rodgers, April de Castro ng 10-Acacia, at Red Rivera ng 8-Butterfly ay nagkamit naman ng silver sa 4x50 Medley Relay. Sina Leis, Rodgers, Aquino at Rivera naman ang nakakuha ng bronze sa 4x100 Medley Relay

Nagkamit din ng bronze sa 4x200 Freestyle sina Gutierrez, Rivera, Shaila Fortajada, Celina Medina ng 8- Butterfly.

Para sa Boys team, nakuha naman ni Jeremiah Esguerra ng 9-Iron ang bronze sa 50m Breaststroke. Nagwagi din ng bronze ang relay team nina Esguerra, Nicolo Saren at Paul Enriquez ng 9-Gold, at Patrick Sajol ng 9-Iron sa 4x50 Freestyle at 4x100 Medley Relay.

Opinion (Submission): Defying Colonization

We cannot deny that a large part of our lifestyle has been influenced by our post-colonizers. The Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese all have contributed a large part on our society, history, and way of thinking. So much on this foreign impact that most of the time we are unclear to what is truly ours. And when asked, "What really is originally Filipino?" our answer is vague and hazy instead of clear and concrete.

After hundreds and hundreds of years of foreign occupation in our land, it is inevitable for colonizers to leave behind a trace of their culture. And it is up to the Filipinos to either adapt or adopt the new ideas they are exposed to. With the help of our ever-growing colonial mentality, these influences are more often than not taken to heart by us Filipinos. Therefore, our own culture and beliefs are overshadowed.

But there is still hope for the worrying spirits of our ancestral Filipinos. Although they are taken for granted--or just not remembered--there are still values and traditions that have stayed even after our struggle and conflict with the colonizers. These values and traits are things to be proud of, and we Filipinos should be thankful that they survived throughout the hundreds and hundreds of years that people from far-off lands conquered the country.

One of these traits is the ability to be cheerful, whatever the situation is. Be it either fire or whatever disaster, you can see the bystanders behind the TV reporter of the calamity waving and smiling at the camera, grateful for the chance to be on TV. No doubt that Filipinos are considered to be one of the happiest people in the world. Another Filipino trait is hospitality. If you ever attempt to interrupt a family while eating, you can expect that they will happily invite you to dine with them. And in a Filipino household , you can never have too many guests Respect towards elders is another Filipino characteristic. The saying of "po" and "opo" as a sign of respect is still practiced until now, by many of the Filipino youth.

These traits come to us as something natural and effortless, although a little do we know that these are remnants of our pre-colonization way of thinking. And to keep them alive, we need to practice and teach them to future generations, for they make a large part of our national identity, the distinctive feature that differentiates us from other nations.

UPIS sumabak sa Tagisan ng Talino

Naimbitahan ang UPIS sa Interscholastic Social Sciences and Philosophy Quiz Competition na ginanap sa NCPAG, UP Diliman noong Setymebre 12.

Dalawang team ang ipinadala ng UPIS sa nasabing kompetisyon. Kabilang sa Team A sina Gerard Gamboa ng 10-Narra, Shari Oliquino ng 9-Iron, at Mikaela Mabalot ng 8-Damselfly. Sina Lara Cruz ng 10-Narra at Christine Prieto ng 9-Silver naman ang bumuo ng Team B. Napili ang mga kalahok base sa kanilang grado sa Araling Panlipunan noong nakaraang taon.

6 na paaralan ang nakalaban ng UPIS sa elimination round. Ilan sa mga ito ay ang Philippine Science High School at San Sebastian College.

Hindi pinalad ang UPIS na makapasok sa final round ngunit sila ay nagkamit ng ika-anim na pwesto. Nakakuha sila ng iskor na 168 at dalawang puntos lamang ang pagitan sa ika-5 pwesto pumasok sa final round.

7-10 nagtagisan ng galing sa Culmi

Muli na namang ipinakita ng mga mag-aaral ng UPIS ang kanilang husay at talento sa Culminating Activity ng Linggo ng Wika at Kasaysayan na idinaos noong Setyembre 5.

Umikot sa temang Wika at Kasaysayang Pilipino, Landas sa Pagsulong ng Karapatang Pantao ang pagtatanghal ng bawat grado.

Sa paligsahan ng Tugtuging Etniko sa Grado 9, kinailangang lumikha at tumugtog ng musikang etniko ang mga kalahok na seksyon at bigyan ng karampatang sayaw na saliw dito. Inuwi ng 9-Iron ang unang gantimpala sa patimpalak na ito.

Huling nagpakitang gilas ang mga estudyante ng Grado 10. Inihandog nila ang sari-sariling bersyon ng Sayawit sa mga kantang OPM tulad ng Tatsulok, Upuan, Balita, Batingaw at iba pa. 10-Lauan ang nagtagumpay sa patimpalak na ito.

UPIS Fencing Team makes fiery debut

The UPIS Fencing Team competed in the DPS-VBF All-Rookie Fiery Fencing Festival last Saturday, September 3 at the Diliman Preparatory School Gymnasium.

Sophomore Bertram Matabang ranked 8th out of more than 30 competing fencers in the Men's Foil division while Mikee Neri placed 15th overall in the Women's Sabre division and Jana Nicole Ologenio ranked 16th overall in the Women's Foil division.

Miguel Flores, who destroyed the other members of his pool by scoring 5-2 in two games, qualified for the direct eliminations for the Men's Sabre division together with Rafael Flores and Nico Denosta. Mel Cometa, meanwhile, competed in the Men's Foil division.

Ologenio, Reagene Fernando, and Nikki Diaz, only qualified for the direct eliminations for the Women's Foil division but all were one of the top scorers of their pool.

Acquaintance Party, idinaos

Idinaos sa Multi-Purpose Hall ang Acquaintance Party ng Batch 2014 (Grado 8) at Batch 2015 (Grado 7) noong ika-22 ng Agosto sa ganap na ika-1 n.h.

Nilayon ng pagtitipon na ito na magkakilanlan ang dalawang batch, magkaroon ng bagong kaibigan, matutong makisalamuha sa iba, at magpakita ang bawat batch ng kani-kanilang talento.

Nagmula ang pondo ng Acquaintance Party sa mga nalikom na pera galing sa proyekto ng Grado 8 na pangongolekta ng mga recyclables.

Children's party ang tema ngayong taon. Narito ang ilan sa mga may pinakamalikhaing kasuotan noong araw na iyon:
