buwan ng wika,

KAP, Sangguniang Pangwika, at FHC nagsama-sama sa Buwan ng Wika at Kasaysayan

8/31/2012 08:08:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

● nina Patricia Lim at Reagene Fernando

"Hey, sweetie... I missed you, too. How's California? Oh, yeah? That's nice..."

And then he's going to say, "It's still hot he..."

"...re, as usual. Work? Still as str..."

"...essful as always. Okay, babe. I..."

"...love you, too. Bye." He put down the phone.

I put down the glass cup from the wall and headed for bed. This is how I usually end my night ever since he moved in the vacant room next door last month. My old neighbor couldn't take all the racket everyone made and packed up. You see, this is a small cheap apartment that I, as well as he, live in. And so, everyone could hear almost everything here, whether they like it or not.

But that's actually why I moved in here. I like it. I like listening to the couple two doors from mine arguing over who washes the dishes. I like listening to the snoring of the old lady, unaware that she left the TV on. I like listening to the kid playing the guitar, even though he can't. But hearing the voice next door and how it makes all the noise seem like whispers to me is what I like most.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not in love with him or anything like that. I guess I'm just curious. He probably has only seen me once or twice. Besides, he has a girlfriend. Far away from where he is right now. So they talk every night. And every night I listen. But it's always... always the same thing. It's like a tape playing over and over again. Some how-are-yous and a lot of I'm-fines. He even says "I love you." Still, for someone like me who has never been in love, every word sounded hollow.

I was the third of five children in our family. Ever since I was a kid, I was always the one who didn't get much attention. No matter how hard I tried to make my parents notice me, in the end they still didn't know I existed with them at that moment. So I stopped trying to speak up and started listening. Just listened. To my mom. To my dad. To him.

I continued to do so. Every night, with the glass cup from my bedside table, I eavesdropped on their unchanging conversations. Unchanging until now. It was later than when he usually calls her. I thought it would be the same old stuff they talked about. But there were a lot of pauses in between his words.

"Hey, sweetie. Umm... Yeah, I missed you, too... How's California..."

I thought he was gonna tell her about his work or the weather here. But he doesn't.

"I'm sorry. I don't think I can do this anymore. It's just not working for me..."

He put down the phone.

I put down the glass cup and head for bed. This is how I usually end my night ever since he moved in the vacant room next door two months ago. I smiled to myself and drifted off to sleep. ● by Cynical Carousels

Movie Review: Brave (2012)

8/21/2012 07:35:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Disney and Pixar’s new computer-animated fantasy adventure film Brave hit Philippine theaters last August 1, 2012. While it grossed $223,324,000 and had positive reviews in the United States starting its premier last July 22, Brave has yet to capture the hearts of the Filipino audience and make its mark on the Philippine box office list.

Set in the highlands of 10th-century Scotland, Brave narrates the story of a spirited young princess, Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) who defies an old custom which in turn caused chaos all over the land. After consulting a witch for help, her family becomes cursed and Merida is forced to break the spell before it’s too late.

When Merida’s mother, Queen Elinor (voiced by Emma Thompson) decided that it was time for her to marry, a competition for the princess’ hand was held. Not wanting to marry, Merida enters the competition on her own behalf. For she was a skilled archer (thanks to her father, King Fergus (voiced by Billy Connolly), Merida wins the competition but in doing so, she angered her mother and embarrassed the lords of the land. This incident resulted to Merida and her mother having a terrible fight. The princess runs off into the woods where she encounters the magical will-o'-the-wisps, who lead her to a witch’s cottage. The witch (voiced by Julie Walters) grants Merida one wish-to change her mother, but the wish comes with horrible consequences. Merida tries to find the witch to redo the spell only to find out that she is gone. Unless Merida faces her problems, her family’s-especially her mother’s and her life would tragically change forever.

First of all, the computer-generated animations were spectacular. From the medieval castle to the eerie woods to the wonderful waterfalls and to the evermore famous fiery locks of Merida, Brave is an animation masterpiece on its own. The setting and the special effects contributed to the overall feel of the movie and made it both culturally and aesthetically rich. The characters were adorable and were voiced quite well. The Scottish accent really made a fresh twist to the story and the character each had their unique personalities.

Second, although visually appealing, Brave can be a bit misleading. At first glance, the movie seems to be about a rebellious princess who will change her destiny by fighting for her kingdom-or something close to that. But, in truth, the movie focuses more on mother-and-daughter relationships. It shows Merida and her mother’s rocky relationship and how they both grow and learn how to listen and understand each other. But not to worry, Brave still has action (though not the kind of violence that some teens might like) and loads of humor.

All in all, Brave is a very kid-friendly and heartfelt movie--the kind which you and your little brother/sister and your mom could watch. It is full of emotion, humor, and both comical and slapstick violence. ● by Joanna Pagulayan

UPIS loses to league-leading FEU, NU

8/21/2012 06:59:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

UPIS suffered big back-to-back losses in the hands of the top two teams in the juniors basketball division of UAAP Season 75.

The Junior Maroons lost to the FEU-Fern Baby Tamaraws by 30, 77-47, last August 11 and to the NU Bullpups by 22, 69-47, last August 14.

FEU raced to a 9-0 run at the start of the game with their tremendous full court defense which forced UPIS to commit turnovers. UPIS’ Gelo Sablan also sprained his ankle with 8 minutes left in the first quarter which added to the woes of the team. UPIS had a run in the third quarter sparked by Josiah Chua but wasn’t enough to catch the raging Tamaraws.

UPIS kept up with NU until the end of the first half, 34-27, but NU started to break away from the game after a four-point play from Biteng and a putback from Cauilan of NU. It was downhill for UPIS from there as they started missing easy shots and turned the ball over a couple of times. ● by Aaron Lina and Juanito Gregorio

Abot-KAmay relief drive inilunsad

8/08/2012 08:57:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

"Let’s do our part!"

He held my hand as we walked down the unfamiliar street, ignoring the world as I enjoyed the warmth entangled in my hands. He suddenly stopped and stared at my questioning eyes, confused by the abrupt halt. Everything was perfect and the weather was fine, but why did I see pain in his eyes?

Next thing I knew, his hand was slowly leaving mine, leaving it cold and empty. I stared back at his beautiful eyes, and I already knew what was coming.

After a few agonizing minutes of silence, he started to talk. But his words were all slurred to me. I looked away in an instant, refusing to absorb his tortuous good-bye. I heard the rustling leaves as he waited for me to speak, looking at me like I was dying on a hospital bed. I swallowed the lump building up in my throat as I tried to compose myself. I opened my mouth but nothing came out, repeating the same thing thrice, looking like a gaping fish in the process. Giving up on talking back, I faked a smile as if nothing had happened and walked away gracefully, leaving him with nothing.

As I walked along the empty pavement, tears fell down my cheeks, tears I’ve been thwarting the whole time he was talking. I plopped down to the ground, hugging my knees trying to keep myself whole and everything in me attached. The agony filled me and my whole body became numb. I never imagined feeling so vulnerable until now.

Everything we’ve been through in that short while and every moment I thought would last were thrown away just like that. He was my first and I gave everything. His eyes told me I meant the world to him. I was the reason for his heart-melting smiles. Then he left unexpectedly and I ended up with nothing. How could he just forget everything we shared together when it was already etched in me?

I wonder how this marvelous boy’s good-bye can hurt me like I was skinned alive.
