Video: The MC Bente Pesos Challenge





Anong gagawin niyo sa bente pesos sa loob ng bente minutos?

Ang Bente Pesos Challenge ng UPIS Media Center ay unang ipinagawa noong taong 2012 sa MC2013. Layunin nitong hamunin ang creativity at resourcefulness ng staff at bigyan na rin sila ng quality time kasama ng kanilang ka-pares.

Ang premyo noon ay libreng dalawang article sa article count. Ngayon, ang premyo ay happiness! :)

It may well be the most awaited and most talked about film in this year’s Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP).

When it was launched in August 16, 100 Tula Para Kay Stella was an immediate hit. Probably because of the Filipinos’ penchant for heartbreaking yet kilig love stories, people trooped to the cinemas and lined up to watch it.

JC Santos, who gained popularity in the hit TV series ‘Till I Met You, stars as the shy, awkward honor student Fidel Lansangan who meets the confident, rocker girl Stella Puno, played by actress Bela Padilla of Camp Sawi fame. The supporting cast is led by former Starstruck contestant who plays the character of Chuck. Other well-known Filipino celebrities are also part of the cast such as Dennis Padilla, Mayton Eugenio, Ana Abad Santos, Prince Stefan, Arvic James Tan, Maricel Morales, Caleb Santos and Christopher Roxas. The film is directed by Jason Paul Laxamana who also directed “The Third Party” and “Ang Taba Ko Kasi.”

Even though they were opposites, Fidel and Stella built a subtle relationship with each other after their first meeting during their freshman orientation at the Pampanga Agricultural College (PAC). As their friendship grew, so did Fidel’s feelings for the black-lipstick-wearing Stella.

Fidel expressed his feelings through writing a series of poems inspired by Stella, yet he never had the guts to give her the collection personally. Meanwhile Stella, who aspired to be a musician, went from one boyfriend to another in order to reach the fame she dreamt of. The friendship they had was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and experiences, their relationship reached a myriad of heights and pitfalls, yet Fidel’s love remains unwavering as he continued writing poems for Stella until he reached his 100th. By the time he was confident enough to confess his love, a twist in the story made the audience’s heart ache until the end of the movie.

The actors’ portrayal of their characters brought the movie to life. Though Santos and Padilla looked mature to be 17-18 year olds, they were able to portray the emotions and the struggles of their characters. Santos maintained Fidel’s stutter for the entirety of the film and portrayed the evolution of his character, from an awkward freshman to a confident performer. Padilla, on the other hand, deftly depicted Stella’s tragedies and exhibited the aspiring musician’s humanity by showing her imperfections. However, the supporting cast wasn't consistent. Some of them came out of nowhere and suddenly had major roles, like Von. Some of their acting also felt very scripted and didn’t give off a natural feel.

Behind Fidel and Stella’s story was this annoying repetitive Original Soundtrack (OST). The song “241” by Rivermaya was repeated throughout the movie in an attempt to create a little too obvious of a foreshadowing. However, the production design team was very diligent with the characters’ clothes and props. The characters using devices like the earlier generations of Nokia phones and the casual use of old social media sites like “Friendster” were suitable for its time period. The colors of the movie were also “faded” giving it the feel of the setting an “older” vibe.
The movie itself was realistic, showing us that real life isn’t like a fairy tale and that we won’t always end up with the person we really wanted to. However, with the title “100 Tula Para Kay Stella,” we expected bigger and bolder lines to hit us in the end. We would have preferred if the actual 100 poems written by Fidel were better. It showed progress and how Fidel was improving by being better as the movie went by, despite lacking the wow factor we were looking for.

In the end, 100 Tula Para Kay Stella had its good and bad points. In spite of its flaws, it still undeniably touched the hearts of many and reiterated the importance of saying what you really feel. // by Dane Jamandron, John Allan Gregorio, Nathan Ramos, Fiel Delos Reyes

Sports: Jr Maroons come up short in first 3 Fil-oil Flying V games

The UPIS Junior Maroons are currently competing in the Fil-Oil Flying V tournament to prepare for the upcoming UAAP season.

In their first game against JRU, the Jr Maroons lost with a final score of 63-77.

They also failed to get a win in their next two games against NCAA defending champions MIT, 65-84, and UAAP defending champions FEU, 69-74.

Despite the losing effort, they are still optimistic and hungry for improvement.

The team is still trying to find its true identity under the tutelage and system of coach Paolo Mendoza.

John Allan Gregorio, the Jr Maroons’ team captain gave his insight about the team’s status and he mentioned that they are not burying themselves under pressure since they value learning as much as they can in every game that they play in the tournament.

He also said that even though they are not getting the results they want in their recent games, they are acquiring more knowledge and wisdom in every game as a team.

In addition to Gregorio’s statement, when asked about how the team is doing, Jr Maroons’ guard Bryan Lina said, We are still in the process of learning how to play within system and work on our team chemistry. Kasi ang main goal namin is to win in the UAAP.”

Sports: 7 Payo Mula at Para sa mga Student-Athlete

Matapos ang walong oras ng paghahanap kay X, pag-aaral sa walang katapusang mga pagsusulit, at paggawa ng iba’t-ibang homeworks at projects, hindi pa dito natatapos ang isang araw ng student-athlete. Kailangan pa nilang maglaan ng oras para sa kanilang mga ensayo. Kadalasan, apat na beses sa isang linggo mag-ensayo ang atleta, iba pa kung malapit na ang UAAP season kung saan puspusan silang nag-eensayo araw-araw, maliban na lamang tuwing Linggo. Ang mga ito’y siguradong nakakapagod sa parehong pisikal at mental na kalusugan nila. Bilang mga katulad ninyong student-athlete, narito ang ilang payo upang masigurong walang masayang na oras at matupad ang mga tungkulin ninyo bilang isang estudyante at isang atleta.

 1. Bawasan ang oras sa gadgets

Kaunti na lang ang oras na natitira sa isang araw ng mga student-athlete kaya hindi na ito maaaring sayangin. Maaring ang paggamit ng gagdets ang kanilang paraan para magpahinga at makapag-relax, ngunit hindi ba’t mas magandang ilaan ang oras sa ibang mga bagay? Sa ilang oras na ginagamit sa paglalaro ng gadgets, maaaring natapos mo na ang mga takdang-aralin mo.

2. Huwag sayangin ang weekend

Madalas walang weekend ang mga atleta dahil mayroong silang laro o ensayo. Kaya naman, kapag nagkaroon ng libreng weekend mas mainam magpahinga na lang o maging produktibo. Maari rin itong gamitin bilang pag-catch up sa mga oras na di nila nakasama ang kanilang mga kaibigan at pamilya.

3. Matutong humindi

Hindi naman masamang humindi. Sa mga pagkakataong gusto mong magpahinga o kaya wala kang oras para sa ibang mga bagay, hindi masama na tumanggi ka. May mga panahong hindi na muna tayong dapat sumama sa mga lakad ng barkada at sa halip, gamitin ito para sa sarili upang makapagpahinga kahit saglit o sandali lamang.

4. Gumawa ng time table

Bago pa lamang ang mga inaasahan mong mga dapat gawin, pang-akademiko man o para sa kompetisyon, dapat ay naayos mo na ang iyong schedule. Kailangang maglaan ng sapat oras para sa mga bagay na kailangang tapusin.

5. M I N D S E T

Matutong magmindset. Isipin kung ano ba talaga ang ninanais mo at planuhin kung papaano mo maabot ang mga iyon. Sa ganoong paraan, magiging mas determinado at pursigido ka na gawing posible ang noo’y imposible para sa’yo.

6. Planuhin ang mga takdang-aralin

Maglaan ng isang maliit na notebook para gawing isang to-do-list, doon isulat ang lahat ng requirements at takdang-aralin na ibinibigay. Planuhin kung kailan mo ito balak gawin, bigyan ng eksaktong oras, at matutong disiplinahin ang sarili para masundan ang plano. Bigyang importansiya ang bawat minutong meron ka.

 7. “Health is wealth”

Ang pagpuyat ay maaaring maging sanhi ng isang hindi magandang performance sa iyong laro at pag-aaral. Ugaliing matulog nang maaga at gumising nang maaga upang masimulan mo nang produktibo ang iyong araw. Sa kabilang dako, hindi nga masama ang magpahinga, ngunit hindi rin pwedeng puro pahinga lamang. Siguraduhin na bago pa man tamaan ng antok ay nagawa mo na ang mga hindi mo kayang gawin kinabukasan.

Ang mga payong ito ay hindi lamang para sa mga student-athlete, para na rin ito mga estudyangteng nahihirapan i-balance ang pag-aaral at ang iba nilang mga gawain. Ika nga nila, madaling magsalita, mahirap gumawa. Kami mismo ay aminadong hindi namin minsan nasusunod ang sarili naming mga payo. UPIS students participate in Japan’s EMICA Camp



Six UPIS students participated in the Ehime-Matsuyama International Camp for Science & Culture (EMICA Camp) in Matsuyama City, Japan last March 25-31.

The EMICA camp which started last 2016 aimed to foster camaraderie and understanding of different cultures though activities with participants of different cultural backgrounds. For the first time this year, the program included representatives from Thailand and Indonesia together with the UPIS and Ehime students.

Grade 10 students Anton Almira, Alex Arugay, Ron Castro, Ivan Cunanan, Jarod De Luna, and Bianca Morales stayed at the Ehime University for a week. They participated in lectures and research presentations that crossed cultural borders. The group also enjoyed a cultural tour of various places around Matsuyama such as the historical city of Uchiko, Buddhist temple at Ishiteji, and the Matsuyama Castle.

“Marami kaming natutunan sa isa't isa lalo na po sa kultura ng ibang mga bansa especially, Japan. Sobrang nag-enjoy po kaming lahat kasi magaganda yung sights nung field trip at nakakita po kami ng konting Cherry Blossoms,’’ said Ron Castro said when asked about his experience.

Layunin ng bawat batch ng Media Center (MC) ang makapag-iwan ng mga balita, artikulo, tula, kwento, atbp. na magugustuhan at maaalala ng mga mambabasa. Dahil dito, parating may mga bagong ideya at pakulong naipakikila ang MC. Ang mga sumusunod ay ilan sa mga ito:


CREATIVE WRITING PROJECT

Kung may isang bagay na kaabang-abang sa bawat semestre ng MC, ito’y ang kanilang pagsusulat ng Creative Writing Project (CW). Dito nasusubok kung gaano kahusay humugot, magpatawa, magpakilig, at pumukaw ng interes ang mga taga-MC. Kaya naman masisiguro ninyong mula sa pinaka-una hanggang pinakabagong CW, mapapabasa kayo hanggang dulo.

Bago isulat, ipromote, at ipublish, dumadaan ang mga CW Project sa isang story conference.
Doon pinag-uusapan ng staff ang mga magiging bida at kwento.

Ibang klase ng hirap, pagod, at promotion ang pinagdaraanan ng bawat proyekto. Hinahanapan ng bagong pakulo, istilo ng pagsulat, at mga kapana-panabik na plot twist ang bawat akda. Siyempre, sa tulong din ng LCs, mas gumaganda ang mga akda at lalong napapabilib sa MC ang mga mambabasa.

POLLS

Mabigyan ng boses ang mga taga-UPIS at kung minsan ay manlibang. Ito ang objective ng MC nang una nilang gamitin ang pagsasagawa ng mga poll. Sa di inaasahang resulta, naging panghatak na rin ito ng mga mambabasa sa Aninag Online. May mga reader kasi na inaabangan ang mga witty answers sa poll questions, meron namang naghihintay lumabas ang pangalan nila dahil natanong sila ng isang miyembro ng MC nang araw na magsagawa ng poll.

Pinag-aagawan ng staff, lalo na ng mga wala pang approved articles for publishing, ang paggawa ng poll. Akala siguro nila madali lang itong gawin. Ang totoo, mahirap ito. Pinakamahirap ang mag-isip ng paksa. Kailangan na malikhain at kakaiba. Inaabot ang staff ng ilang oras bago makabuo ng paksang iaapprove ng LCs.

Inilimbag noong 2012 ang resulta ng unang poll ng MC. Pinamagatan itong Ansabe. Binubuo ito ng pitong (7) tanong tungkol sa reaksyon ng mga Isko at Iska sa 5-day schedule sa UPIS. Noong taon ding iyon kasi sinubukang muling ipatupad ang limang araw na pasok sa UPIS. Matapos nito, sinundan na ito ng iba pang poll mula sa iba't ibang batch ng MC. May kanya-kanya pakulo sa bawat poll, tulad na lang ng spoof poll ng Batch 2015, na talagang katawa-tawa. // by Dane Jamandron


TEASERS

 Teaser ang nagbibigay ng clue sa kung ano ang dapat abangan sa ilalabas na pub, at kadalasan ay ipinapakita na rito ang theme ng mga literary articles. Dito rin nakikita ang galing at pagka-artsy ng graphics team ng MC.

Kailangang maging interesting at may suspense ang mga ito, habang kaunti lang dapat sa mga detalye ng pub ang ipakikita. Minsan ay naglalabas rin ng mga printed teasers na ipinapaskil sa school para mas maka-engganyo ng mga mambabasa.

Bukod sa pagiging creative, kailangan resourceful rin ang Art Director (AD) at Graphics Team sa paggawa ng teaser.
Para sa ikaapat na #MCAnniversary noong 2015, ginamit ni AD Hazel Romero ang mga vintage na gamit sa kanilang bahay at bumili pa ng cake at kandila.

Ang bawat teaser ay matagal na pinag-iisipan at ilang gabi ring pinagpupuyatan. Ayaw kasi naming marinig ang:
1. Ang pangit
2. Walang dating
3. Ano ‘yan? ‘Yan ba ‘yun?
4. Wala na bang ibang konsepto?”

BANNERS AND TYPOGRAPHIES

Nang magsimula ang CW ng MC1 2012 na Isang Araw, sa tinatawag na cover nakalagay ang pamagat at kabanata ng CW. Ginagawan naman nila ng typogs ang bawat article.

Nang dumating ang MC1 2015, nagsimula na ang paggamit ng banners sa mga mahahabang artikulo. At sa MC 2018, banners na binase sa tema ng publishing night ang ginamit para sa lahat ng literary articles.

Ang bawat banner at typog ay pinag-isipan at ginawa ng Art Directors and Lay-out Artists with much love. No artists were harmed in the making. // by Hannah Manalo
