Bornilla takes home bronze in IESO 2017



UPIS Grade 12 student Adrian Bornilla won bronze in the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) held last August 21-30 in Nice, France.

The annual IESO tests its participants’ skills in all major areas of earth sciences such as geology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, and astronomy. The tests consisted of two written exams that focused on the said areas, as well as four practical exams that required them to do lab tests and field work.

Bornilla ranked among the top 30% of 120 students from the 29 participating countries, resulting in a bronze medal finish.

Three other students from Philippine Science High School, namely Mikhail Torio from the Main Campus, Eugene Toribio from the Bicol Campus, and Janine Juachon from the Central Luzon Campus were sent with Bornilla to represent the Philippines.

There were other activities prepared by the IESO such as the International Team Field Investigation (ITFI) and the Earth Science Project (ESP). Each activity required members of the Philippine team to collaborate with students from other countries, emphasizing IESO’s objective to foster camaraderie among the students.

Competing individually, they bagged multiple awards namely 2 silvers and 2 bronzes from the main event, 1 gold and 1 silver from the ITFI, and 1 gold from the ESP. Of the medals, Bornilla won the gold for his participation in the ITFI.

“Ang IESO ay isang unique and humbling experience kasi it’s been so long since the Philippines last participated in the competition,” Bornilla shared. “Sobrang competitive nung atmosphere yet sobrang fun kasi we were able to meet different students from different cultures.”

The Philippine team was trained by members of the International Geoscience Education Organization namely Prof. Miguel C. Cano and Dr. Marietta De Leon.

News: UPIS, nakamit ang ikalawang gantimpala sa DAGITAB


Nakuha ng University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) ang ikalawang gantimpala sa DAGITAB, isang Electronics Workshop and Contest, noong ika-18 ng Pebrero sa Computational Science Research Center (CRSC).

Nagwagi ng ikalawang gantimpala sa paligsahan sina Julianne Sasing ng Grado 8, at Christian Sarabia ng Grado 9. Pitong puntos ang lamang sa kanila ng kampeon mula sa Philippine Science High School habang nakamit naman ng Manila Science High School ang ikatlong puwesto.

“Masaya siya, marami akong natutunan kasi parang it was more of a learning experience rather than a competition. Naramdaman ko na although focused kami sa pagkuha ng points, mas focused pa rin kami sa kung anong pinapagawa sa amin,” pagbabahagi ni Julianne Sasing ukol sa kaniyang karanasan sa patimpalak.

Lumahok din sa nasabing paligsahan si Marius Barcenas na kinatawan ng isa sa mga team na ipinadala ng UPIS. Sina G. Raffy Ibanez at Prop. Regina Taduran ang tumayong tagapayo ng mga kalahok na estudyante.

Ang DAGITAB ay isang patimpalak ng UP Engineering Radio Guild (UP ERG) na nilalayong mahasa ang interes sa Electronics at Engineering ng mga estudyante. Nagkaroon ito ng limang session sa loob ng isang buwan kung saan tinuruan ang mga kalahok ng basic electric circuit and logic circuit analysis, basic programming, at microcontrollers.// nina Chesca Santiago at Marianne Sasing

UPIS places 2nd overall in YouThink 2017


Fifteen students from the Media Center 2018 (MC2018) represented UPIS and won first runner-up honors in the recently-concluded YouThink 2017 held last February 18 at the UP Palma Hall.

YouThink is an annual writing seminar and competition for high school students organized by The Guilder Institute, the official publication of the UP Cesar EA Virata School of Business. Co-presented by The Philippine Star, this year’s event was themed Metanoia: Be the Change.

Garnering the second highest overall score, UPIS bested 9 other schools including third placer Holy Spirit School of Quezon City but fell short to champion St. Theresa’s College.

The MC2018 team also bagged 4 individual medals, with Trisa de Ocampo and Marianne Sasing taking home 1st place in the News Writing and Business Writing events, respectively. Hannah Manalo finished next to Sasing in the same category while Hillary Fajutagana clinched third in the Editorial Writing event.

De Ocampo, Sasing, and other first place winners have the chance to have their work published in The Philippine Star.

The representatives were distributed among 6 writing events, namely, News, Business News, Feature, Editorial, Cartooning, and Photojournalism. Before the competition, a series of talks regarding the said writing events were conducted.

UPIS team wins 3rd place in TUKLAS Competition

Seniors Rachel Siringan, Julia Reyes, and Gelleen Esposo, won 3rd place in the Model Planning Contest of TUKLAS, hosted by the UP Circle of Landscape Architecture Students (UPCLAS) last February 22 at the Engineering Theater, Melchor Hall in UP Diliman.

Heralding the theme “TUKLAS: A Look Into Landscape Architecture”, participants were tasked to plan and design a scale model of a school.

“Masaya kasi ngayon lang nangyari yung event na ‘yun tapos nanalo pa yung UPIS ng 3rd place,” said Gelleen Esposo, when asked about her experience from the said event.
