Feature: That New Brad Pitt Movie aka World War Z

6/28/2013 08:46:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

(c) Shockya.com
Our generation is very much infatuated with the supernatural, be it vampires, werewolves, and now, zombies.

Of the hundreds of zombie related movies and franchises, what makes World War Z worth your money?

If you are a horror fan, you may or may not enjoy the movie. This is the kind of movie whose objective is to give the audience a good time rather than scare them to death. It's a great movie to see with your family for it will convince you that you enjoyed the whole movie experience when you leave the cinema.

As a PG-13 zombie horror flick, World War Z automatically turns off loads of zombie fans that are in it for the gore. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be any violence. The movie is filled with action that can be thrilling to some unlike other movies where the civilians suddenly become sharp shooters or where there are unnecessary car chases put in to the mix. What the movie lacked in gore, it made up for a great plot, story line, and really great zombies.

The movie centers on Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), a United Nations investigator who retired to be with his family only to be pulled back in for the sake of the world. Dramatic don't you think?

What's great about the movie is that you can actually FEEL the apocalyptic chaos going on but it’s not just about the zombies. The movie starts off in an everyday traffic and then next thing you know someone's head-banging their way into your car. People stealing left and right, trying to hoard what they can. It’s absolute madness, indeed.

One of the things that makes World War Z different from other zombie franchises such as Resident Evil, The Walking Dead, and Zombieland, is because we finally get to see the authorities' perspective where they aren't the ones screwing the world over. Usually in zombie flicks we only get to see glimpses of what the government is trying to do only to fail miserably. This time we get to be the civilian then the hero. It's a video game waiting to happen.

Feature: Jaime Mejia: A Role Model and Inspiration

6/28/2013 08:33:00 PM Media Center 4 Comments

The life of a student-athlete is never easy. They have to find time to study their lessons and finish their requirements. Besides these, they have to make sure their body is well-trained to do well in their sport. Moreover, they have to find the time to do the basic things like eating and sleeping healthy and maintaining good relationships.

Fast and furious. Jaime Mejia is one of UPIS' most
accomplished athletes. Photo credit: Kittina Mejia
Despite these challenges, our very own Jaime Mejia of the Track and Field team seems to rise to the occasion. He’s breaking records (UAAP 2012, 75th Season), winning school awards (Athlete of the Year, Parangal 2011-2013), joining international competitions (2013 ASEAN Youth Athletics Championships) and the list goes on.

It all started when he was in the 4th Grade. Originally, he planned to join the team once he was a high school student. But after finding out he could join at a young age he eagerly signed up for the team. Since then, he’s been giving pride to his school for winning in annual competitions like the Milo Olympics, Philippine National Games, UAAP, Palarong Pambansa and more.

Now a senior at UPIS, he is the team captain of the Track and Field Team. His team mates say that Jaime inspires them to train. “Binibigay niya lagi ang best niya at lagi siyang present sa training,” Jomike Gemora and Yzrael Dumaguing share in an interview.

Regarding Jaime’s inspiration and motivation to train, he says he wants to be internationally competitive. “Nalaman ko na marami pang mas malakas sa akin kaya kailangan ko pa mag-training ng mabuti,” he said when asked about his experience in the 2013 ASEAN Youth Athletics Championships in Vietnam, his first international competition. “Dapat never ako mag-settle,” he added.

Sometimes, you ask, “Are you even human?” and every time he laughs it off and says it’s all about sorting priorities. “Aral kung aral, train kung train,” he said.

When asked for advice for other aspiring student-athletes he said, “Humingi ka ng tulong kung kailangan mo, tapos dapat di mo kakalimutan ang studies mo at dapat mahal mo ang ginagawa mo.” / by Red Rivera

The UP Diliman community came together last June 24 to support the various teams in the annual UP Pep Rally held at the College of Human Kinetics (CHK) Gym.

Aside from eliciting support for the teams, the Pep Rally’s goal is to serve as a preparation for the upcoming University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) 76th season opening on June 29 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

As it also serves as a fund raising activity for CHK, two programs were held, one in the afternoon and another at night.

The team members performed various presentations. The Swimming Team, the UP Streetdance Club, the UP Filipiniana Dance Troupe showcased dance routines while the UP Taekwondo showed off their taekwondo skills. Other teams opted to feature AVPs. / by Red Rivera

According to Prof. Ma. Lourdes Vargas, head of CA EMA department, the Learning Plus or L+ program was started by Prof. Bernadette Santos in AY 2005-2006. It was revived in 2011, but due to conflicts in the schedule it was discontinued. This year, the schedule has been set in place and the program is more structured.

Students part of the program are required to attend 1-hour sessions which include lessons that aim to develop good reading habits and positive reading attitude. Parents with children part of the program will receive a letter regarding the session details.

UPIS Canteen, under new management

6/28/2013 08:13:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Commuters' Pass rule implemented

6/28/2013 08:07:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

In an effort to increase the school's security measures, the UPIS Administration issued the Commuters' Pass last June 11.

Only students with the commuters' pass will be allowed to leave school premises without fetchers after classes. The school will also strictly monitor the students who are fetched by school services since they have no permission to leave the school by themselves.

UPIS Principal Dr. Ronaldo San Jose then stated that there is still no definite date of the pass' implementation but it should be effective as soon as possible.

The constant change of school security guards contributes to the reasons why the school needs a Commuters' Pass. Since the guards are not permanent employees, they do not know which of the students regularly commutes to and from school.

Dr. San Jose also said that there are no other alternatives for the Commuter's Pass and that this is the best possible solution to better the school's security. / by Bea Cao, Alissa Villareal, Joshua Paulino
