Learning Plus to start this school year

The Department of CA English, Music and Art (CA EMA) has started preparations for a reading remediation program for Grades 3-9 students this school year.

According to Prof. Ma. Lourdes Vargas, head of CA EMA department, the Learning Plus or L+ program was started by Prof. Bernadette Santos in AY 2005-2006. It was revived in 2011, but due to conflicts in the schedule it was discontinued. This year, the schedule has been set in place and the program is more structured.

Students part of the program are required to attend 1-hour sessions which include lessons that aim to develop good reading habits and positive reading attitude. Parents with children part of the program will receive a letter regarding the session details.

UPIS joins Econvergence 2013

UPIS participated in the UPLB Economics Society's annual inter school competition, Econvergence, last February 9 at the College of Economics and Management, UP Los Banos.

Two UPIS teams composed of seniors Christine Prieto, Arielle Gabriel, and Rendelle Rafin, and CJ Hernandez, Ian Villanueva, and Joanna Pagulayan competed in the Ekonomika Quiz Bee while Mikee Neri and Red Bartolome were the representatives in the Intellectual Debate Ecounter. Louanne De Sales-Papa and Paul Enriquez represented UPIS in the Poster-Making contest.

Juniors Eldrich Marquez and Lino Licuanan joined the Essay Writing contest while Karmela Gabriel was the contestant for the Photo Essay competition. Diego Manansala and Jibreel Fernandez joined the Impromptu Speaking contest.

Though the UPIS teams failed to bring home awards, it was a good learning experience for the representatives and this kind of exposure would be valuable in similar competitions they will join in the future. ● Joanna Pagulayan

13est defends Power Dance title

Bow down to the 13EST. Batch 2013 breezed through an exciting routine
during the annual Power Dance competition to get first place.
UPIS Batch 2013, popularly known as 13est, showcased a cool, colorful, and creative interpretation of Bacolod’s Masskara Festival to win their second straight title in the annual Power Dance competition last December 2012.

Drawing on the ISKULtura theme for UPIS Week 2012, the batch field demo competition, dubbed UPISAYAJUAN, was inspired by Philippines festivals.

Each batch rigorously prepared and rehearsed an 8-minute routine in 2-3 weeks. Driven by batch spirit and healthy competition, everyone worked their hardest in practices after classes and weekends.

Batch 2013 admitted to having trouble in getting the routine done properly and making it all go together. There were a lot of incidents of clashing ideas but despite these, the batch pulled it off during performance day where the strength of their camaraderie and unity set aside all their differences turning it into their most successful and fulfilling performance yet.

Batch 2015 also wowed the crowd with their Ati-atihan-inspired routine, coming in second, while Batch 2014 showed off their dancing skills for third.

Batch 2013 also won Best in Costume for their fiery garments and masks while Batch 2014 won Best Cheer for their catchy tune. ● Rya Ducusin, Bianca Pio

UPIS PFC holds annual Peer workshop

The UPIS Peer Facilitators Club (PFC) had their annual training workshop last September 17 at the school library’s Audio-Visual Room.

This workshop aims to enhance club members’ leadership and counselling skill through activities such as team building, committee planning, and evaluation.

The training tackled the definition of peer helping, function, roles, principles, and code of ethics. Also, the discussion touched the essentials of being and working as a team.

UP Open Debate held

The UPIS English Club - Forum was invited to watch the championship round of the 25th annual UP Pi Sigma Fraternity Open Debate tournament last September 11, 2012 at the Malcolm Theater, Malcom Hall UP Diliman.

The affirmative side from the UP Manila Debate Circle and the negative side from UP Diliman’s Indie A debated on the proposition “RH bill should be implemented for the better of women.”

Each side had two speakers and a scribe. The speakers were given 7 minutes each to give their speeches and were then asked questions for 3 minutes. After all speeches and questions, each speaker gave rebuttals. The jury consisting of 7 professors decided that the negative side won.

The debate was opened by guest speaker, Mrs. Maria Corazon Tan, a lecturer from the UP College of Mass Communications and was moderated by Mr. Jose Bayani D. Baylon. ● by Joanna Pagulayan, Camille Custodio, and Hannah Garay

Forum to compete in Voice of our Youth 2012

UPIS 7-10 Forum members will be participating in The Voice of Our Youth 12th National Impromptu Speaking Competition next month.

The competition will have three elimination rounds and one final round. The first elimination round will be on October 20, the second on October 27, the third on November 3 and the final round on November 10.

The competition aims to inspire the Filipino youth to attain world-class proficiency in English Communication, in furtherance of universal understanding and cooperation. ● by Reagene Fernando and Patricia Lim

“Ang scouting ang isa sa pinakamatagumpay na organisasyon hindi lang sa UPIS, kung hindi pati sa buong bansa,” aniya.

Isa-isang sinindihan ng mga troop at patrol leaders ang mga kandila na sumisimbolo sa mga pangako at batas ng Girl Scouts.

Matapos sindihan ang mga kandila, itinalaga ang mga bagong kasapi ng Senior Scouts mula sa Grado 7 at Cadets – 6 mula sa Molave, 5 sa Kamagong at 4 sa Dao.

Sumailalim naman sa muling pagtatalaga ang mga miyembro ng GSP mula sa Grado 8 at 9.

UPIS Scrabble Team bags silver in Milo Little Olympics

The UPIS Scrabble Team placed second out of 16 schools in the Milo Little Olympics Scrabble Tournament last September 8 and 9 at the Marikina Sports Building.

The format of the competition was “The King of the Hill,” wherein the number of wins and losses are counted before the competitive spread. Their ranking is represented by their table number. The UPIS team of Diego Manansala, Angelo Nueva, Regie dela Cruz, Anthony Gososo, and Eric Rarugal has always been placed either at the 1st or 2nd table.

The final 4 schools competed in the championship rounds on September 9 wherein the UPIS Scrabble Team scored 7 wins and 5 losses in the 3-round championship match.

UPIS 7-10 nagtagisan ng galing sa Buwan ng Wika 2012

Ginanap ang taunang presentasyon ng grado 7-10 para sa Buwan ng Wika noong Setyembre 10, 2012 sa Multi Purpose Hall.

Nagsilbing emcee ng programa sina Aliyah Rojo at Jeremiah Esguerra ng Sangguniang Pangwika at Kilusang Araling Panlipunan (KAP).

Ang mga nagwagi sa paligsahan ng mga seksyon sa Buwan ng Wika 2012.

Itinanghal ng grado 7 ang dulang "Emang Engkantada at ang Tatlong Haragan." Hinalaw naman ni Renen Villanueva sa isang kwentong pambata na inilimbag ng Adarna Books.

Naiuwi naman ng 8-Beetle ang unang gantimpalasa kanilang interpretatibong sayaw sa saliw ng kantang "Piliin mo ang Pilipinas" ni Angeline Quinto.

Ipinakita naman ng grado 9 ang mga iba't ibang katutubong ritwal. Nakuha ng 9-Neon ang unang gantimpala sa pagtatanghal ng tribong Bontoc.

Rampang Pinoy 2012, matagumpay na ginanap

Ginanap noong Setyembre 6 sa Multi-Purpose Hall ang UPIS Rampang Pinoy 7-10.

Layunin ng gawaing ito na maipakita ang kahalagahan ng iba’t ibang karakter mula sa panitikan at kasaysayan na magpakita ng kanilang pagtupad sa kanilang pananagutan sa bayan nang sa gayon ay magsilbi silang huwaran sa pagtupad ng ating tungkulin sa bayan.

Naunang ipinakilala ang mga kalahok mula sa Grado 7 na sina Caila Patricia Cadiz at Ryan Anthony Dimayuga para sa 7-Mars bilang sina Gabriela at Diego Silang. Kinatawan naman ng 7-Saturn sina Mary Christine Llorente at Trent Madjus na rumampa bilang Ninoy at Cory Aquino. Huling tinawag sina Angelika Lubang at Emmanuel Jabiguero ng 7-Venus bilang sina lapu-Lapu at prinsesa Urduja.

Para naman sa Grado 8, lumahok sina Mary Rose Sanchez at Richard Luague ng 8-Beetle bilang sina Maria Clara at Crisostomo Ibarra. Rumampa naman sina Quiela Salazar at Jan Matthew Tolentino ng 8-Cicada bilang sina Sisa at Pilosopo Tacio. Ang 8-Dragonfly naman ay mayroong Dyesebel at Sergio na ginampanan nina Arienne Baladad at Juneau Villanueva.

Sa Grado 9 naman, ang mga kalahok ay sina Klyve De Guzman at Diego Miguel Dario ng 9-Argon bilang sina Sicalac at Sicabay. Sumunod sina Disa Nicole Reyes at Lino Licuanan ng 9-Neon bilang sina Orosman at Zafira. Napili naman ng 9-Xenon sina Moira Palma at Zane Andrew Pulumbarit bilang Maria Makiling at Bernardo Carpio.

Sa Grado 10, lumahok sina Nina Bea Leis at Paul Enriquez ng 10-Dao bilang sina Alunsina at Tungkung Langit. Para naman sa 10-Kamagong, rumampa sina Reagene Fernando at Edward Jedwin Reyes bilang sina Amaya at Bagani. Kinatawan naman ng 10-Molave sina Louanne Grace De Sales-Papa at Jan Eric Madriaga ng Flerida at Aladin.

Sina Lubang at Jabiguero ang nagwagi sa Grado 7. Ang unang gantimpala naman sa Grado 8 ay nakamit nina Baladad at Villanueva. Sina Palma at Pulumbarit ang nanalo sa Grado 9, at sina De Sales-Papa at Madriaga naman sa Grado 10. ● nina Reagene Fernando at Patricia Lim

Batches 2015 and 2018 blasts off in Acque 2012

"How do you organize a party in space? You PLANET."

Batch 2015 and 2018 got acquainted through their outer-space themed Acquaintance Party entitled "Blast Off" which was held last August 25 in the Multi-Purpose Hall.

The party aims to unite and introduce the said batches to each other through various activities and to promote respect as well. These objectives were presented along with other vital information in "Mission Control" which opened the party.

Since the acquaintance party was meant for the freshmen, the Grade 8 students decided to do a blue plate service type of lunch where the sophomores served the freshmen personally, as opposed to the typical buffet service. This was also done for organization and efficiency.

The event lasted for more than 3 hours and was filled with various activities and performances from both batches. Afterwards, they did a little 'unity dance' which was choreographed by some sophomores namely Juneau Villanueva, Rafael De Peralta, and Ryan Cacho, among others. ● by Paolo Aljibe and Dara Lilang

UPIS wins RowBoatics championship

The UPIS team composed of Rafael Luis Aenlle of 9-Neon, Maragtas VII Sano Amante, and Harold Michael Prudencio of 9-Argon won 1st place in the RowBoatics competition at the UP College of Engineering last September 1.

RowBoatics is an inter-high school machine competition which challenges the students to design and build a rubber band-powered watercraft. The event is hosted by the UP Gears and Pinions, a mechanical engineering organization in celebration of their 57th year.

Each team was given only 2 hours to produce a watercraft. The organizer provided them with 4 rubber bands, a ruler, a pair of scissors, masking tape, 10 drinking straws, a long folder, a plastic folder, a marker, 2-feet of steel wire, 10 barbeque sticks, cutter, glue gun with 4 glue sticks, 2 pencils, and Styrofoam.

Aenlle, Amante, and Prudencio were declared champions after scoring 94% with their time of 1.94 seconds. Another UPIS team composed of Karmela Mae Gabriel from 9-Xenon, Joshua Caesar Lorenzo of 9-Argon, and Luis Fernando Raynon Jr. of 9-Neon placed 7th. ● by Arielle Gabriel, Benjo Hernandez, and Eric Madriaga

UPIS team wins Teen Debate

UPIS won against Philippine Science Highschool in the 7th biennal convention hosted by the Society of Adolescent Medicine of the Philippines, Inc. (SAMPI) held last September 3 at the Diamond Hotel in Roxas Boulevard.

The judges pronounced the UPIS team composed of Red Bartolome, Mikee Neri, and Joanna Pagulayan as the overall winner and Bartolome as the best speaker.

The topic of the debate was “Social Networking: Boon or Bane” which was given last July for the teams to research on UPIS was given the affirmative stand.

The debate consisted of two rounds. The first in which both sides gave two constructive speeches and two rebuttals. The second round was a question and answer portion. There were two guest reactors, one blogger and the other a professor from the UP Institute of Tourism. ● by Aliyah Rojo and Juanito Gregorio

UPIS Scrabble Team joins Milo Little Olympics

The UPIS 7-10 Scrabble Team joined the Milo Little Olympics Scrabble Tournament held in Marikina City last September 1.

The team is composed of juniors Diego Manansala, Angelo Nueva, and Regie dela Cruz, and sophomores Anthony Gososo, and Eric Rarugal.

The UPIS team went up against 16 other groups and came out as one of the Top 4 teams in the first four rounds of competition. They got a total of 10 wins in 16 rounds.

In preparation for the tournament, the team trained under the supervision of Michael Jude Tomamac, former UPIS Scrabble Club President.

The same participants will compete in the remaining 6 rounds of the tournament this coming Saturday, September 8. ● by Reagene Fernando and Patricia Lim

Profusion nagwagi sa UPIS Idol Season 2

Nakamit ng grupong Profusion ng Batch 2014 ang unang gantimpala sa ginanap na finals ng UPIS Idol Season 2 noong Agosto 30 sa Multi-purpose Hall.

Kinanta ng Profusion ang kanilang rendisyon ng Noypi. Remiks naman ng awiting Tatsulok at Upuan ang itinanghal ng grupong Dfly mula sa Batch 2015 na nagkamit ng ikalawang gantimpala. Ang Molaboys ng Batch 2013 naman ang nagkamit ng ikatlong gantimpala para sa kanilang pag-awit ng Biyahe.

Labing-anim na grupo ang nag-audition sa elimination round noong Agosto 24 sa AV Room. Mula rito, napili ang anim na grupong lalahok sa finals. UPIS VST finishes 2nd in all-star swimming competition

The UPIS Varsity Swimming Team (VST) won 2nd place over-all in the high school division of the All-Star Swimming Competition last August 11 and 12 in the Rizal Sports Complex.

The team won a total of 7 gold medals--4 golds for sophomore Pricila Aquino in the 400m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley and 50m butterfly. She was also named one of the over-all MVPs. Senior Joy Rodgers added 3 more to the loot in her 50m, 100m, and 200m breast stroke events.

Jeremiah Esguerra bagged a silver medal in his 100m breast stroke event while Mary Llorente won 2 bronzes in 50m and 200m breast stroke.

Meanwhile, the UP Varsity Swimming Team was also declared as the over-all champions in the college division of the said competition.

SciSoc joins environmental awareness workshop

The members of the UPIS Science Society (SciSoc) attended a workshop which aims to promote environmental awareness and teach citizens the importance of water to the community.

The Lakbayan tour conducted by Manila Water and headed by Ms. Heidi de Maisip included an on-site visit to the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Compound, La Mesa Dam, and UP Sewage Treatment Plant.

They also attended a climate change seminar sponsored by the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines at the UPIS 7-10 AVR. Activities, lectures and discussions were also given to help the students be more aware of global warming. ● by Rya Ducusin, Camille Babaran, and Trizia Badong

UPIS Pep welcomes new coach

Former UP Pep Squad team captain Ms. Ara Abarquez, who now teaches Grade 1 UPIS students, was named the new coach of the UPIS Pep Squad for AY 2012-2013.

The squad warmly welcomed their new coach who aims to teach and improve basic cheering skills and polish gymnastic techniques. She also plans to involve the Pep Squad in more interschool activities.

“Siyempre magaling siya kasi team captain siya ng UP Pep Squad dati. Okay siya magturo. Inamin niya rin na more on stunts and gymnastics ang kaya niyang ituro kaysa dance talaga,” pep squad member Christel Manalo said of their new coach.

“Medyo strict pero all in all, okay naman po,” adds head drummer Gaea Pelaez.

Racing hearts. Nervous sighs. Awkward stares.

Nothing is more gruesome than being the new kid in school. It’s definitely hard being far away from your comfort zone with no familiar face to talk to. Last June 5, 15 new UPIS high school students went through all these.

UPIS stopped accepting lateral students in 2001 and resumed in 2009. For this academic year, the school accepted 15 new high school students both varsity and lateral entrants.

At first, a lot of students weren’t so pleased with this abrupt change. Some felt that accepting transferees will somehow change the equilibrium within batches and some felt that the new students were invading their “exclusivity.” But they eventually welcomed and accepted the new additions to the UPIS family.

For the new students, the ride wasn’t as smooth either.

According to most of them, being new was never easy. It has always been a stereotype that the new kid is always the “odd ball.”At first they felt isolated them but with the help of a few warm smiles and welcoming hellos, they were able to adjust nicely in a short period of time.

“Nakakakaba. Noong una, mahirap ang lessons tapos wala akong kilalala. Pero, after a while, madami naming nagwewelcome sa’min,” said Hannah Manalo, one of the lateral students in 7-Mars.

Different teams also welcomed their new members with open arms.

“Masasaya naman po sila. Makukulit din,” said swimmer Drew Magbag and basketball player John Alan Gregorio from 7- Saturn.

Their impression of their new “second home” is that the school promotes freedom in terms self-expression. Most of them recalled how during the first day of classes, they would always be made to write expectations of different subjects and introduce themselves in class.

They are surely adjusting well and without a doubt, they would soon be well-adapted and would be fully enjoying the life as UPIS Iskos and Iskas. ● by Joanna Pagulayan & Camille Custodio
