Feature: 10 Times Ma'am Cathy Proved She's One of Us

The Ma’am Cathy inside UPIS has a different persona from Ma’am Cathy on social media sites, especially on Twitter. At school, all she can think about is work, work, work and that includes editing this article. While on Twitter, other than promoting Ang Aninag Online and being a proud teacher, adviser, and “Mami” to her students, the user @lyraharaya uses Twitter to express her emotions, thoughts, and feelings on the daily hustles and bustles of life. Here she can be mad, sad, happy, excited, exhausted, and be a little savage like any other Twitter user.

Ma’am Cathy Atordido (@lyraharaya), an English teacher for 11 years and counting and one of the learning cooordinators of MC 2018, is one active and internet-savvy Twitter user. Here are some relatable tweets that made us realize that she’s one of us.

1. When she defended the stress of people around the world. If students, have too many projects to do, think about how many papers that teachers need to check! Don’t even try to invalidate the stress levels of a teacher.

2. When she needed to push her limits all for the love of literature, K-Dramas, and sleep. For her, work must always come first before she enjoys her most deserved rewards.

3. When she spent the ASEAN week binge watching K-Dramas with no regrets. As like what people say, time you enjoyed wasting is not wasted time.

4. When she was so happy for her kumareng Song Hye Kyo and kumpareng Song Joong Ki after the #SongSongCouple wedding.

5. When she shows her love and support for basketball. She’s a big fan of the sport (don’t even get me started about her love for the Gin Kings) and sometimes loses her chill while watching the game.

7. When not even the twiter account of the Media Center itself was spared. She has no patience for errata and the like and wish for those to be dealt with as soon as possible.

8. When she put arrogance in its place. Don’t even think of starting a keyboard fight against an English teacher if you haven’t even mastered basic subject-verb agreement.

9. When she shows her belief in the powers of the universe. Students of Ma’am Cathy know about her fervent trust on destiny and fate, even having a jar used for “group-making” purposes aptly named “Universe”.

10. When she does what she does best, being a supportive and relateable “Mami.” Wise words from Ma’am Cathy that we should never forget:

//nina Max Salvador, Zach Jugo at Hanna David

Ask.

//nina Hanna David at Zach Jugo

Feature: Senior Fears

There comes a time when every high school student has to face senior year. Watching the third installment of High School Musical might have given us an idea on what to expect, but the real thing is a completely different experience.

It’s not as easy as the steps to We’re All in This Together, but the sure thing is, once you throw your graduation cap up in the air, you’ll have this feeling of fulfilment, like you just battled your way through every rough obstacle in your teenage years.

As we were once inexperienced freshmen ourselves, we have always heard that the last year of high school is probably the most emotional, and the most workload-heavy year. Stress from endless paperwork, non-stop readings, piles of requirements, grades and of course, college, become frenemies rather than fears.

http://www.bmhspridetime.com/uploads/6/3/1/9/63198029/377111977_orig.gif
Let’s start with the impending doom called college. Who isn’t afraid of college? That’s a question asked by many of us seniors. We might be overthinking, but once you are nearing it, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.

The reason why so many seniors are afraid of going to college is because of the amount of heavy decisions we have to make. First of all, we need to choose courses and colleges to apply to. While some already have their college life planned out, there are those who still don’t have a clue on what they really want to do after high school. Now, with the K-12 program, seniors’ course choices can be narrowed down because of the different tracks we take in high school. Here, we can find out what we’re really fond of and where we can truly excel.

http://why.ryerson.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/6.gif
That’s not all, though. There are still college entrance exams that can determine our future. The pressure of studying and preparing for something that has a major impact on our future is frightening. It’s also heartbreaking for those who tried their best but still didn’t qualify for their dream college.

We also find it hard to let go of high school because of our friends. We are afraid of breaking the bonds that have built over their time in high school. College can make your high school barkada drift apart at one point and you’ll find yourself reminiscing about all of the adventures you experienced in your high school life. A way of revitalizing those high school friendships is by having a reunion with your buddies every once in a while! It may seem lonely during the first few days of college, too, but this could be an opportunity to break out of the comfort zone and make new friends and connections.

We are always afraid of uncertainties, and for seniors, college is the closest and biggest uncertainty that we will face. However, this is not the final stage of our life and definitely not the final stage of our school life. We experience challenges in order to strengthen us and college will definitely prepare us for the real life we will experience once we are out of the university. Once you determine what kind of future you want to have and accept that things in life, like high school, come and go, breathe easier and be more relaxed.// By Hanna David and Paola Pagulayan

MC2018 stages first MCLive event

When your own words fail to speak for you, allow us to be your messengers.

For the first time in its history, the UPIS Media Center (MC) opened its doors to the UPIS community in an offline event called MCLive, with the theme “Unsaid, Untold, Unspoken” last May 18 and 19.

It’s not every day that Room 115, more commonly known as the MC Room, gets a make-over, but for two nights, it was completely different from its usually formal and classroom-esque feel. Blankets were strewn across the floor with random pillows here and there, and as the fairy lights cast their glow on the whole venue, the atmosphere was perfect for a night of your favorite acoustic melodies and unspoken words.

Days before the event, the staff wasn’t quite sure how far this would go, but much to our surprise, the event was a success, with the second day greeted with a full house. Hours before the doors even opened, the corridor was already packed with students lining up in hopes of getting a chance to witness the performers light up the stage.

BLOCKBUSTER. A long line awaits the doors of MCLive as students eagerly anticipate the much-awaited event. Photo Credit: Media Center 2018

Unsaid: If this is my last night with you...

To set the mood for the first night, MC 2018’s very own Carlos Laderas performed his first Spoken Word piece "Ayokong Matapos Ang Gabing Iyon."

Tripolar, Cosmos, Denice Palicte and Rene Rollon, Elkan Reyes, and Wim Rollon then serenaded the audience.

MC 2014’s Lance Reblando also owned the stage by singing and sharing experiences as a former Art Director of MC.

The second night was kicked-off by Cedric Jacobo and his piece, entitled “Rason.” For the rest of the night, FLL, Amamimamols, Hally Hernando, Keio Guzman and Patience Ventura, and Caitlin Norona and Adrian Bornilla took the MCLive experience to a whole new level.

SETTING THE STAGE. MC’s very own Cedric Jacobo had the audience mesmerized with his Spoken Word as the opening of Day 2. Photo Credit: Media Center 2018
Caitlin Norona’s performance was particularly astounding as she stole the hearts of the audience when she hit every note of Adele’s "All I Ask" perfectly.

But the whole affair wouldn’t have been an event of MC 2018 if we didn’t have performances of our own. Members of the staff stepped up to the challenge and delivered heartfelt acoustic songs, most of which were OPM, and gut-wrenching Spoken Word pieces for both nights.

“It was very frightening to perform in front of so many people, but I had fun even though I made a few mistakes,” admitted Fiel delos Reyes, one of MC 2018’s performers for Day 1.
Many on-the-spot performances and talents were also discovered during the open mic part of the program, where the audience and MC staff did not miss the chance of sending their messages through songs and poetry.

Untold: Bakit nga ba hindi mo nasabi?

ANSWERS TO WHY. Bits of unspoken thoughts from both staff and audience were poured out onto small pieces of paper on the Freedom Board bearing the heart-tugging question. Photo Credit: Media Center 2018

Other than the performances, another attraction for the whole event was the freedom board where the the question “Bakit hindi mo nasabi?” was asked. Answers like “I missed my chance”, “May thesis pa kami”, “Nasabi ko pero delivered lang”, “Naka-block ako”, and other answers laced with the woes of romance and what not were written on post-its and taped to the board.

It was quite amusing to read each of the answers because they served as a glimpse into the thoughts and emotions of the audience. Students and MC members alike flocked around the board as they read the musings and miseries of their schoolmates.

The audience was also encouraged to visit the “Say It With MC” booth, where they had the chance to request hand-written postcards, bearing their untold messages or random thoughts. Some of them even created their own works.

The celebration also showcased an MCPakisabi Photo Exhibit dubbed “Pahaging”. Weeks before MCLive, the staff collected over 31 submissions from various students, as part of the event’s promotion. Short but captivating, the chosen statements were a perfect fit for the creative shots MC used for the display. “Sabihin mo na bago pa mahuli ang lahat” and “Invisible tears are the hardest to wipe away” are but two of the entries which could have sparked the interest of anyone who passed by the gallery to read them.

The funny thing was, there were only 6 submissions during the first week, but when the Documentation and Promotion committees got the bright idea to take their laptops and personally ask for submissions from the students walking around the first floor corridor, they were able to raise the number of submissions to 31. It was fulfilling to know that the students were curious about the event and were quick to share their own one-liners.

Despite the many obstacles that the staff had to endure, like the overwhelming requirements of Grade 11 students, the task of selling tickets over a limited period of time, the arduous task of moving around furniture amidst the unbearable heat, and preparing the venue for our eager audience, MCLive was definitely a success in our books. We may have had doubts about how the event would be received by UPIS, but the overwhelming support from teachers and students did not disappoint.

But behind the staff that took up the challenge of organizing MC’s first offline event are the Learning Coordinators who have stood by us since the start of our journey as MC 2018. To close the second day, Ma’am Cathy and Ma’am Wena expressed their utmost thanks for the support that MC has received, both online and offline. They shared their hopes that, in the very near future, MCLive will be brought to an even bigger stage, for an even bigger audience. (And we all sincerely hope you’ll come along for the ride.)

We all entered the room with things unspoken, but as the night came to a close, we knew that our messages have been told, with nothing left untold and unsaid.

‘Til the next offline event!// By Hannah Manalo, Marianne Sasing and Chesca Santiago with reports from Cedric Jacobo, Zach Jugo and Hanna David

Feature: The UPIS Guide to Pulling an All-nighter

“Summer” is coming and the academic year is finally coming to a close. We are facing our last wave of requirements, exams, projects, and final papers. In the next two weeks, we are bound to face the longest days of the semester. Here are some tips to help you survive those nerve-wracking, sleepless, and stressful nights:

1. Sleep before you weep.

When you are tired because of the long day you had at school, one of the best ways to de-stress yourself is to take a shower and lie down in your bed until you fall asleep for a short while. This “power nap” will help boost your energy and get you in shape for the battle you are about to face.

Just make sure to set your alarm so you’ll wake up on time. The last thing you need is another cause of panic because you overslept. If you’re tulog mantika, we highly suggest putting your device’s alarm on its loudest volume and setting it to go off every five minutes. This way, you’ll have no choice but to stand up and put it off.

2. No coffee, no workee

In this battle against all the reqs, drowsiness will be your biggest enemy. To conquer this, your greatest ally will be your coffee. Caffeine is a stimulant which makes our reflexes alert, enabling us to stay awake for a longer time. For newbies of coffee drinking, those 3-in-1 and instant coffees are perfect for their low tolerance. But for those who are considered pros, black and brewed is their constant. In case you are not fond of coffee’s strong, bitter taste, eating chocolates, preferably dark ones, as an alternative will do.

3. To-do-do-do! (to the tune of Beethoven Symphony No.5)

For those who pull up all-nighters, time is a crucial thing. Therefore, one must use his/her time wisely. Making a schedule of the things you need to do will help you manage your time. We suggest that you list your tasks per subject and time it accordingly. (See example below)

6:55 – 7:00 Take a shower
7:00 – 8:00 Math HW
8:01 – 8:02 Grab a glass of water
8:03 – 8:32 Chat Groupmates on Science Reporting
8:32 – 10:00 Revise Chapters 1 – 5

4. A playlist for the sleepless

Hearing the right set of notes and tunes will help your brain relax, making you feel soothed and calm. If you are easily distracted, playing two hours of piano music on Youtube is the best fit for you. But if you are the type of person who is up for lively songs that will channel the inner biritera in you, the No Stress playlist and Your Favorite Coffeehouse playlist is perfect for you.

5. Have a break

Not the boyfriend-girlfriend thingy wherein you’ll just leave your partner broken but breaks in which you’ll take a rest so that you won’t be fed up with the tons of things you still need to accomplish. Five minute naps in between subjects will help you replenish the strength you need in order to finish your requirement. Watching your favorite series, kdramas, and anime will lighten your mood and rejuvenate your spirit. Do not overwork yourself as a rested mind will function better than a fatigued one. Stay calm in the midst of chaos and remember that you can do it. You got this!

6. Pray and seek for guidance.

If all else fails, make sure to ask for guidance from the deities. Ask them to give you the courage and strength to finish all your requirements. Also, do not forget to pray for extra energy so that you won’t fall asleep in your upcoming classes. Whether or not there really is someone up there listening to your problems, at least you will feel relieved that you were able to release your thoughts and rants.
Pulling an all-nighter is not an easy task. But let us be mindful that nothing worth having comes easy. All the sleepless nights we’ve had will pay off once we’ve checked everything off our to-do list. Just imagine the life we will all have once our summer break starts. We can sleep all day or stay up all night to do the things we can’t normally do during the school year. Sports: Tatak UPIS

Photo credit: Jamie Mejia

At basta always give your best para in the end, no regrets!”

Melvin Sangalang
FINISH LINE.

Basti Regala
LUNTIAN AT PULA.

Aina Ramolete
UP FIGHT.

Diego Dario
TROPEYO AT KARANGALAN.

//nina Maica Cabrera, Hanna David, at Julian Taloma

Spoof News: Mga langaw, naparami!

// nina Maica Cabrera at Hanna David

Feature: A Classic Remastered: Beauty and the Beast

Photo Source : Disney Movies UK

More than two decades have passed since the love story of an odd girl living in a small village and a cursed prince enchanted the hearts of viewers. Now, sixteen years later, Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast will take you on a magical journey filled with fascinating animations and Broadway vibes that will make you want to sing, dance, live, and love.

Launched in the country last March 16, the movie was warmly welcomed by fans and newcomers alike. Years after playing Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson stars as the lovely Belle who unexpectedly meets the frightening Beast, played by Dan Stevens. Celebrities such as Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf from Disney’s Frozen, provide the comedic side of the movie while the narcissistic evil antagonist Gaston is brought to life by Luke Evans. Joining the remarkable cast are popular personalities Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ewan McGregor, and the adorable Nathan Mack who voiced talking ornaments Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Featherduster, Lumiere, and Chip, respectively. Directed by Academy-Award winning director Bill Candon, the movie has amassed around $690 million dollars since its global premiere.

A tale as old as time

The story of the Beauty and the Beast is instilled forever in the hearts of every Disney fan. Seeing it in live-action made us feel nostalgic about our childhood and made our inner child’s hearts light up knowing that the plot stayed close to what we expected.

During a ball teeming with the wealthy and the elegant, the handsome prince of the castle was faced with the dilemma of dealing with an old lady asking for help. Little did he know that his response to this seemingly trivial encounter would change his life, and those of his people, too. On the other side of the story enters Belle, a girl who, with her books and inquisitive nature, is deemed quite different from everyone else in her village. The fates of these two characters are tied as Belle comes to her father’s rescue after being caught unawares in the prince’s castle.

Unbeknownst to them both, this was the start of a romance that is deeper than skin and a love that sees with the heart, and the rest of the story unfolds in a flurry of strange encounters, musical numbers, and unexpected discoveries.

A song as old as rhyme

This movie didn’t just bring us to a trip down memory lane; it also brought an exemplary whole-package experience to its audience. All of the songs that were sung expressed genuine emotions, making its listeners feel the shift from one lyric to another. Aside from this, the cinematography of the film was beyond what we expected. The colors weren’t at all binary and each frame in the film gave us a clear depiction of what was really happening in the actual scene. We also commend how they presented this classic fairytale in a more realistic and thrilling approach.

The costume and design deserve praises, too. It made believe that what we were watching then was really happening in Paris in the 1700s.

In addition, the cast must be commended for their incredible performance. No matter how small or big their part is, they have this energy that makes the whole picture come to life. It felt as if there were no lead, supporting, and extra actors or actresses because every one of them performed their hearts out. And we believe that these are the small contributions that make a great movie.

A dream come true

We never expected to see the 1991 animation to come to life so vividly. The movie that was once a child’s storybook was turned into something big, influential, and magical. Because this movie wasn’t just made for popularity or fame, it is also a call to every girl to look up to and be like Belle. Watson perfectly portrayed her as a strong, independent woman that would never let a man stand in her way. Also, Belle showed the lengths that one would go for family, especially since her father was all she had left.

Beauty and the Beast also left us an important message in life: we should treat everyone equally, regardless of their looks. We should look deeper than what we see on the surface. Also, it gives people the idea that selfishness is not something you should keep inside heart. We must give, and give, and give as it is the key that will lead us to our happily ever after.

Watching this movie was truly a complete escape from reality. We were enchanted by the capability of one kind soul to change a cold-hearted beast. And we want all of you to watch it and to see the wonders of love and all its magic. //by Hanna David, Jo-ev Guevarra and Zach Jugo

Sports: Winning Moments

In the recently concluded UAAP Season 79, the Junior Maroons proved that they can be what they are right now: athletes who made UPIS proud by playing their hearts out. With all the pressure and criticism they received off-season, they managed to shake it off with heads held high in the hopes of reaching their goals as representatives of their teams and of the UPIS community.

The Junior Maroons may have failed to bring home a championship this year, but we cannot deny the fact that each team has performed beyond expectations and surprised us with an outstanding Season 79 campaign.

One Team

The incomparable bond that everybody sees within the UPIS Varsity Swimming Team (VST) isn’t just seen in school. They aren’t just evident in photos they post online but mostly in their competitions. They have showed great unity in their games which was pivotal in ushering in their success, specifically in this UAAP season.

The Girl’s Swimming team racked up their third consecutive 2nd runner up finish in UAAP79 where they scored 238 points and brought home 15 medals. Their remarkable achievement was mostly led by sophomore Zoe Hilario, who also broke the former record in the 400m individual Medley. Sophomore Chloe Fabic and Junior Charize Esmero also helped Hilario in this season’s campaign.

The UPIS Boys Swimming Team, on the other hand, won 6th place in the competition. Senior Drew Magbag led his team by winning 2 silvers and a bronze medal.

After finishing third last Season 78 in both boys’ and girls’ divisions, all eyes are on the UPIS Track and Field Team as they attempt to finish better in Season 79. However, problems struck them early in the season. Ace players sustained injuries while some were not listed in their assigned events. But this didn’t stop them from giving their best for the colors of maroon and green, which resulted to a fourth-place finish for both
teams.

Usual front-runners Gyles Abac, Forth Soriano, and Charles Epino performed well, bagging medals left and right. Meanwhile, debuting thrower Shaina Queri surprised the girls’ division, claiming the lone medal of the Junior Tracksters in the girls’ division.

With their vast improvement this season, there’s no stopping our Junior Dashing Maroons from exceeding expectations in future competitions.

Trust the Process

The Junior Maroons may have failed to make it to the final four after losing two crucial games in the homestretch, but this season is one of their best showings in recent years. They are led by this season’s MVP, Juan Gomez De Liano and their seniors, BJ Lina, Jaggie Gregorio, and Joelo Tupaz .

They finished the season with 5 wins and 9 losses, which gave them a higher chance of getting the much-coveted Final Four ticket but was foiled by the DLSZ Green Archers.

They may lose several veteran and key players in the roster next season, but all they ask from the UPIS community is to trust the process and support them through and through.

Bright Future

BETTER FINISH. The UPIS Table Tennis Team finished 6th in the last UAAP Season 79 while the team’s newbie, Jazper Pacis, managed to bag the Rookie of the Year Award. Photo Credit: Melvin Lava

After four months of intense training and preparations, the UPIS Table Tennis team finished 6th overall this season. Veterans James Ecito, and Rene Rollon II showed amazing performances while Rookie of the Year Jazper Pacis surprised not just his opponents but the whole UAAP Table Tennis community after putting up a love-set performance against Adamson.

With an amazing rookie and a dedicated team that showed their potential in Season 79,
everyone can’t wait to see their games in the future.

Screaming their lungs out every game, the UPIS Pep Squad surely deserves more recognition. They were the ones who pushed and cheered for the players to go all out in every game, through each win and each defeat. Because of their amazing half-time performances, they were able to attract a sponsor, the Delos Santos Medical Center, for their team shoes and uniform.

They may not compete as athletes, but expect that they are going to be present in every game. Behind every athlete’s success is a squad who is ready to bring out the athletes’ determination to win.

Nowhere to go But UP

All of the UPIS varsity teams indeed improved this UAAP season. The patience and hard work that they all dedicated have paid off. This season was indeed a blast not just for the student-athletes, but also the school they’re representing. The enthusiasm and support every UPIS student gives to all the varsity teams proves that each UAAP season is really something to look forward to. This season might be over, but more opportunities are to come for each team and its fans. As they bring the best of themselves in every game, who knows? Maybe soon we’ll see our teams crowned on the podium and rejoicing in triumph. //by Julian Taloma, Maica Cabrera and Hanna David

Feature: Hot Topic: Setting the UPIS Vlogging Trend

Hey, hey, hey! Is there anything you need? A place to go this weekend? The latest millennial trend to try? Or challenges to do with your friends? Maybe these 3 Vloggers from UPIS can help you with your problems.

SWIM. SHOOT. SLAY.

First up is Suzy Mariella Uy, a Grade 11 student, a swimmer and an artist of the UPIS Media Center. She started her channel last year, and aired her first episode on November 26, 2016. The content of her channel mainly consists of travelling, music, film, photography, and current events in her life. She explained that she uploads her videos because it is easier for her to share her ideas and express her feelings.

Her main goal for her channel is to share and improve her skills in filmmaking and Photoshop. She is also using the experience as part of her training to pursue her dream college course: Multi Media Arts. The channel will also serve as part of her portfolio for it. With her fearlessness, she’s gaining viewers little by little and that’s what keeps her filming and making new videos.

STORY OF HER LIFE

Fatima Wadi, a student from Grade 10-Yakal, would like to thank her subscribers for making memories with her and her channel: Pizza & Lemonade. She loves photography but since she wanted to level it up, she tried to edit her own videos so she made this channel late 2014 but uploaded her first video on October 2015, entitled “Vlog: Chill Sunday|2,” sharing a tidbit of her life with us viewers. She treats her channel as a diary, as it is something she would like to keep forever, not just on the internet, but also in her heart.

Fatima’s videos are all about showcasing her talents like baking, drawing, painting and performing guitar covers. Sometimes she features her sisters Hannah and Cay, both UPIS students, for cameos or challenge videos. Hannah, a Grade 2 student, even has her own segment on Pizza & Lemonade, reviewing her toys like Baymax and My Little Pony.

Fatima also featured this year’s UPIS Fair including Powerdance 2016 where her batch (2019) won first place.

ALL AROUND THE WORLD

Anne Therese Papa or Telet is another Grade 10 student who has now taken part in the vlogging world. Her channel called Helicoptherese is all about her travels and experiences not just in the Philippines but also around the world. She’s been to Palawan, Cebu, Baler, Puerto Galera, Cambodia and many more!

Other videos on her channel include her experiences with bath bombs, C.A.-EMA’s Literally Literary Day, and their recent JS Prom, Lumine 2017. Sometimes, Telet creates Do-It-Yourself videos but she’s not confident enough about it, so she posts it privately. She made Helicoptherese because she loves editing videos and re-watching memories.

Telet’s goal is to have more viewers for her to interact with her subscribers because she loves to read their feedback on her videos. Her subscribers are important to her because they spend their precious time watching her videos. She hopes that they learn something from her channel.

If these sound interesting for you, visit their channel, hit like, subscribe, and leave comments on their videos. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get inspired to start your own vlogging channel! //Hanna David, Jaja Ledesma
