english,
There comes a time when every high school student has to face senior year. Watching the third installment of High School Musical might have given us an idea on what to expect, but the real thing is a completely different experience.
It’s not as easy as the steps to We’re All in This Together, but the sure thing is, once you throw your graduation cap up in the air, you’ll have this feeling of fulfilment, like you just battled your way through every rough obstacle in your teenage years.
As we were once inexperienced freshmen ourselves, we have always heard that the last year of high school is probably the most emotional, and the most workload-heavy year. Stress from endless paperwork, non-stop readings, piles of requirements, grades and of course, college, become frenemies rather than fears.
Let’s start with the impending doom called college. Who isn’t afraid of college? That’s a question asked by many of us seniors. We might be overthinking, but once you are nearing it, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.
The reason why so many seniors are afraid of going to college is because of the amount of heavy decisions we have to make. First of all, we need to choose courses and colleges to apply to. While some already have their college life planned out, there are those who still don’t have a clue on what they really want to do after high school. Now, with the K-12 program, seniors’ course choices can be narrowed down because of the different tracks we take in high school. Here, we can find out what we’re really fond of and where we can truly excel.
That’s not all, though. There are still college entrance exams that can determine our future. The pressure of studying and preparing for something that has a major impact on our future is frightening. It’s also heartbreaking for those who tried their best but still didn’t qualify for their dream college.
We also find it hard to let go of high school because of our friends. We are afraid of breaking the bonds that have built over their time in high school. College can make your high school barkada drift apart at one point and you’ll find yourself reminiscing about all of the adventures you experienced in your high school life. A way of revitalizing those high school friendships is by having a reunion with your buddies every once in a while! It may seem lonely during the first few days of college, too, but this could be an opportunity to break out of the comfort zone and make new friends and connections.
We are always afraid of uncertainties, and for seniors, college is the closest and biggest uncertainty that we will face. However, this is not the final stage of our life and definitely not the final stage of our school life. We experience challenges in order to strengthen us and college will definitely prepare us for the real life we will experience once we are out of the university. Once you determine what kind of future you want to have and accept that things in life, like high school, come and go, breathe easier and be more relaxed.// By Hanna
