You might have seen toys in people’s hands in the shape of cubes with a switch, gears, a joystick, and other features. Maybe you’ve also seen a colorful contraption spinning between thumbs and the middle finger and wondered “What are those?”

These toys are definitely something new and are no doubt fun to play with, but did you know that they’re not just meant for entertainment?

The cube-shaped toy is called a fidget cube whereas the one that spins is a fidget spinner. They’re marketed as aides for those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and autism. Not only that, they’re highly addictive and are also designed to help you focus and relieve stress.

Fidget Cubes

When Antsy Labs released their fundraiser on Kickstarter.com, their project blew up (What do you mean by this?). They believe that their quirky product could provide a tangible way to capture one’s attention regardless of how often they fidget, consciously or subconsciously. Antsy Labs also believes that this “fidgeting” behavior shouldn’t be frowned upon or labelled as inappropriate and they’re passionate about the idea that with the right tools and outlet, it can have positive real-life applications. The cube isn’t designed to reduce fidgeting. Instead, it’s to make fidgeting slightly less annoying to those surrounding you.

When ordering one, you can choose from a variety of colors to match your workspace or even your outfit! Either way, it’s something that you can bring almost anywhere. Fidget cubes can be used during class when listening to a lecture, when studying, and when working on projects.

The cube, having six sides, also has six functions, so that all your fidgeting needs are in one place. There’s a click side with three buttons that are paired with clicking noises, and two silenced buttons. If you’re a fan of clicking pens, this side is for you. The glide side is one enjoyed mostly by gamers because of its joystick. When you’re done with those, you can come over to the flip side, with a switch to fiddle with. The breathe side is designed to help you relieve stress when you rub it, inspired by traditional worry stones. The roll side has three gears and a rolling ball that sports a built-in click feature. If you’re looking for a circular fidget, there’s a side with a dial that you could take for a spin.

Fidget Spinners

Fidget spinners have made their debut this 2017 and are taking the world by storm. If you look ‘fidget spinner’ up on YouTube, numerous videos about it are going to show up.

The spinners are built with inline skate and ball bearings and can spin for 2 minutes or more while you’re working, talking to someone, or trying to relax. Holding this spinning device between your thumb and finger has gained popularity with kids and parents because it’s inexpensive, portable, and has a capacity for quick play. In fact, due to its popularity, manufacturers in China that focus on phone cases and accessories have switched over to fidget spinners full time.

The fidget cubes and fidget spinners are both good tools to help you focus and keep your mind off of other habits you’re trying to get rid of. Either way, they’re sure to reduce stress and anxiety when you’re trying to focus or are doing something else with your other hand! // By Paola Pagulayan
