Sports: The Real MVPs



The Juniors division of UAAP Season 79 is over, but this doesn’t mean that our athletes’ battles are over. Rather, it is the start of a long and intensive preparation for the next UAAP season. Here are the players who showed brilliance in their sport and donned the colors of maroon and green with pride.

Despite the busy schedule of student-athletes, Zoe Hilario and Charize Esmero didn’t fail to show their undeniable dedication in all their swimming competitions. The numerous medals they won together with their other teammates paved the way for them to make it to the NCR Meet. During the last UAAP 79 Juniors Swimming Tournament, Hilario brought home 7 medals and broke the record in the 400m Individual Medley while Esmero brought home 4 medals. As they are only a sophomore and a junior, respectively, many are excited as they wait for them to unleash their full potential. Who knows? They might even lead the Junior Maroon Tankers to the top of the podium in the seasons to come.

It is a rare instance when a homegrown student makes it to the Juniors Basketball Team’s UAAP line up, but this definitely didn’t stop Emerson Ebrero. Last Season 79, Ebreo from Batch 2019 started his UAAP campaign. Even with limited minutes on the court, he made sure to make the most out of it. With his charm and “angas”, he effortlessly won the heart of the crowd, serving as the spark plug of the team. Hopefully, we will see more of him in the next competitions.

Lowkey Player of the Year: Jazper Pacis

Many may not know about Jazper Pacis, the prized recruit of the UPIS Table Tennis team from Kings‘ Montessori. Despite being quiet and shy, this didn’t hinder him from showing what he is capable of. In fact, he was hailed as the UAAP79 Rookie of the Year in Table Tennis. Despite this huge success, he still keeps his feet on the ground and gives his heart out in every training to improve more in order to be one of the best.

Walk in the Park: Gyles Abac

As a freshman, Gyles Abac watched the seniors from the sidelines and took it as an inspiration to work harder in trainings. His commitment and patience to Track and Field (TnF) paid off very well as he won a gold and a bronze in the recently concluded UAAP79. He also was the lone representative of the UPIS TnF team in this year’s NCR Meet. Aside from being athletic, he is also blessed with a talent in the field of art. Gyles is known as one of the most creative people in his batch with a knack for drawing and video-making. Recently, he participated in the SDG Youth Competition where his team made it to the Top 7.

Setting the Standards High: Urielle Lilang

Three years of being the heart and soul of the Girls Volleyball Team, Urielle Lilang’s legacy is a hard act to follow. Because of her height, most won’t even think of her as a volleyball player, but once she steps on the court, her doubters immediately become her fans. As the team’s setter, setting up plays and being the manager of the team are her main tasks. Even with the huge responsibility put on her shoulders as the team captain, she still prioritizes her studies. In fact, she was one of the few students chosen to go to Japan for the cultural student exchange program of Saijyo Super Science High School last February 2016. //by Julian Taloma, Maica Cabrera and Beca Sinchongco

Sports: Winning Moments



In the recently concluded UAAP Season 79, the Junior Maroons proved that they can be what they are right now: athletes who made UPIS proud by playing their hearts out. With all the pressure and criticism they received off-season, they managed to shake it off with heads held high in the hopes of reaching their goals as representatives of their teams and of the UPIS community.

The Junior Maroons may have failed to bring home a championship this year, but we cannot deny the fact that each team has performed beyond expectations and surprised us with an outstanding Season 79 campaign.

One Team

The incomparable bond that everybody sees within the UPIS Varsity Swimming Team (VST) isn’t just seen in school. They aren’t just evident in photos they post online but mostly in their competitions. They have showed great unity in their games which was pivotal in ushering in their success, specifically in this UAAP season.

The Girl’s Swimming team racked up their third consecutive 2nd runner up finish in UAAP79 where they scored 238 points and brought home 15 medals. Their remarkable achievement was mostly led by sophomore Zoe Hilario, who also broke the former record in the 400m individual Medley. Sophomore Chloe Fabic and Junior Charize Esmero also helped Hilario in this season’s campaign.

The UPIS Boys Swimming Team, on the other hand, won 6th place in the competition. Senior Drew Magbag led his team by winning 2 silvers and a bronze medal.

The Beasts of the Tartan Track

After finishing third last Season 78 in both boys’ and girls’ divisions, all eyes are on the UPIS Track and Field Team as they attempt to finish better in Season 79. However, problems struck them early in the season. Ace players sustained injuries while some were not listed in their assigned events. But this didn’t stop them from giving their best for the colors of maroon and green, which resulted to a fourth-place finish for both
teams.

Usual front-runners Gyles Abac, Forth Soriano, and Charles Epino performed well, bagging medals left and right. Meanwhile, debuting thrower Shaina Queri surprised the girls’ division, claiming the lone medal of the Junior Tracksters in the girls’ division.

With their vast improvement this season, there’s no stopping our Junior Dashing Maroons from exceeding expectations in future competitions.

Trust the Process

The Junior Maroons may have failed to make it to the final four after losing two crucial games in the homestretch, but this season is one of their best showings in recent years. They are led by this season’s MVP, Juan Gomez De Liano and their seniors, BJ Lina, Jaggie Gregorio, and Joelo Tupaz .

They finished the season with 5 wins and 9 losses, which gave them a higher chance of getting the much-coveted Final Four ticket but was foiled by the DLSZ Green Archers.

They may lose several veteran and key players in the roster next season, but all they ask from the UPIS community is to trust the process and support them through and through.

Bright Future

After four months of intense training and preparations, the UPIS Table Tennis team finished 6th overall this season. Veterans James Ecito, and Rene Rollon II showed amazing performances while Rookie of the Year Jazper Pacis surprised not just his opponents but the whole UAAP Table Tennis community after putting up a love-set performance against Adamson.

With an amazing rookie and a dedicated team that showed their potential in Season 79,
everyone can’t wait to see their games in the future.

Game Booster

Screaming their lungs out every game, the UPIS Pep Squad surely deserves more recognition. They were the ones who pushed and cheered for the players to go all out in every game, through each win and each defeat. Because of their amazing half-time performances, they were able to attract a sponsor, the Delos Santos Medical Center, for their team shoes and uniform.

They may not compete as athletes, but expect that they are going to be present in every game. Behind every athlete’s success is a squad who is ready to bring out the athletes’ determination to win.

Nowhere to go But UP

All of the UPIS varsity teams indeed improved this UAAP season. The patience and hard work that they all dedicated have paid off. This season was indeed a blast not just for the student-athletes, but also the school they’re representing. The enthusiasm and support every UPIS student gives to all the varsity teams proves that each UAAP season is really something to look forward to. This season might be over, but more opportunities are to come for each team and its fans. As they bring the best of themselves in every game, who knows? Sports: UPIS TnF places 4th in UAAP79



The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Dashing Junior Maroons fell short of their target podium finish, placing fourth on both girls and boys divisions in their UAAP79 campaign last February 8-12, 2017 at the ULTRA Sports Complex, Pasig.

They brought home a gold, three silvers, and four bronzes in a considerably successful season despite all the challenges they faced.

Veterans Gab Aparato and Charles Epino both with injured hamstrings, played their hearts out and added three medals for the team.

“We gave it all we could, it just so happens na ang lakas talaga ng kalaban. We were at our best and we made the most out of the situation we had,” said Aparato.

Epino, together with Jasper Atela, Reinard Grimaldo and Christian Pagadora, won a hard-fought silver in the 4x100 relay. The same core with Jerick Marquez instead of Pagadora bagged a bronze in the 4x400m relay.

“Proud ako sa teammates ko siyempre kasi kahit alam nilang hirap ako makatakbo, tuloy parin. Salamat din sa crowd kasi naging malaking factor sila sa takbo namin,” Epino proudly said.

Gyles Abac, Trent Madjus, and Forth Soriano conquered the tartan track in the 5000m and 3000m walk events, dominating the podium and gathered five medals in total. According to Madjus, they just followed and executed their plan and it paid off.

For the girls’ team, Shaina Queri took home a bronze in the shotput event while Caila Cadiz, despite her short preparation time delivered well in her own events.

The whole UPIS Track and Field Team (TnF), especially the seniors, extended their gratitude to the UPIS community for their overwhelming support which motivated the team especially in the last three days of the competition.

“Nakakatuwa na maraming nagpunta at nagpaabot ng support sa amin. Malaki ang pasasalamat namin sa kanila,” said Soriano, a 4-year veteran in the team. // by Julian Taloma

Sports: UPIS TnF Team: Dashing to the Top



For the UPIS Track and Field (TnF) Team, last year was a successful return to the podium.

With lightning on their cleats, they ran through boundaries and now, after months of hard work and preparation, they’re dashing their way back to the podium. This time, they’re not letting that gold out of their sights.

Better Than Ever
With seniors at the helm, the UPIS TnF Team aims to improve last year’s bronze finish in this year’s 79th UAAP Season on February 8-12 at the ULTRA Philippine Sports Complex. With majority of the core players still intact, the TnF Team hopes to leave the mistakes of the past season behind them.

According to their team captain, Gabriel Aparato, they have been preparing intensely by joining off-season competitions like the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) and the Milo Little Olympics. “This year mas may experience na kami and more trained,” he explained. The said competitions gave them more time to evaluate their performances, focus on their weaknesses, and improve in every way they can.

After a forgettable performance last year, with only one player earning a medal, the TnF throwers vow to make this season count.

Throughout the pre-season prep, they never missed opportunities to improve by training almost 7 days a week. According to some of them, trainings are becoming more intense as the season approaches. “Nag-iba sistema ngayon. Dati apat lang kinukuha tapos lahat ng events sa kanila, pero ngayon nadagdagan na yung kinuha kaya mas makakapag-focus na kami sa events namin,” said Nathan Ramos about the huge changes in their line-up.

Another factor that they think will affect their standing is the huge improvement of returning senior James Cruz. Don’t let his height distract you from the things he can do inside the track oval. He is a beast. In fact, he is one of the only two athletes who made it past the 10m mark at the shotput event in last year’s Milo Little Olympics.

Swan Song
All eyes, however,  are on the 18 Seniors, including Forth Soriano and Charles Epino, as they don the colors of maroon and green one last time.

Soriano has already bagged 3 golds and a bronze in his UAAP career while sprinter and former team captain Epino has 3 bronzes, a silver, and a gold to his name.

Their experience and leadership will come a long way as they can use it to take advantage of the younger teams. Backing them up are fellow returnees Christian Pagadora, Gyles Abac, and Jasper Atela.

The Silent Operator
You might think of him as the quiet type, but when he gets his spikes on, veteran sprinter Jasper Atela becomes a completely different person. Disqualified after being late for his triple jump event, costing him, and ultimately the team, crucial points, Atela is said to be the missing link in last year’s title run. Despite this minor setback, nothing stopped him, Epino, Jerick Marquez and Reinard Grimaldo, from finishing third in the 4x400 relay during the recent Milo Little Oympics.

Training hard every day and avoiding injury-causing activities, Atela’s preparation is certainly a road paved for redemption. According to his team mates, he is certainly one of the players to watch out for.

Girl Power
With more schools expected to join the girls’ division, debuting senior Shaina Queri is expected to lead the TnF Dashing Junior Maroons to another podium finish in the girls’ division.

After playing twice in the UAAP with the UPIS Girls Volleyball Team, she found new love on the tartan track. Other seniors have said that she has been preparing all year long and that she aims to emerge at the top in all three of her events. Although she displayed amazing pre-season performance, Queri admitted that the UAAP is on a different level.

“Siyempre iba pa rin yung UAAP dahil mas may pressure dun. Tapos yung mga makakalaban namin alam naming sobra din silang naghahanda,” she shared. Still she hopes for the UPIS community’s support as they aim to make the top three this season.

Next in Line
Now that this is the last year for the TnF team’s core, new players need to step up and fill in their shoes.

Aparato, Bea Jacinto, Grimaldo, Megarth Morillo and Josh Sabido are getting ready to take on this responsibility. Even as they compete in this year’s UAAP with the burden of carrying the team’s name next year, they expect to dominate the coming season. Despite being younger than most of their teammates, only Jacinto is competing in the UAAP for the first time.

“Excited! Pero more on kinakabahan kasi first time,” she says about playing in the UAAP for the first time.

With both old and new faces, the UPIS TnF team is certainly going to take the UAAP Season 79 by storm. With the prospect of success in their books, they certainly won’t be settling for anything less than last year’s performance. // by Blade Saliva and Julian Taloma

Sports: UPIS TnF comes back strong, wins 3rd place in UAAP78

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Track and Field proved themselves worthy with a roaring comeback as they bagged the title of 2nd Runner-Up in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 78 Track and Field Tournament at Ultra, Pasig last February 19-21, 2016.

Walkers Forth Soriano, Gyles Abac, and Trent Madjus, all seniors, showed their domination as they swept the 5000m walk, taking home the gold, silver, and bronze, respectively, on the first day.

Soriano also staved off contenders by claiming the gold medal in 3000m walk alongside Abac who took the silver medal. Christian Pagadora was declared the 1st runner up in the 400m hurdles.

Even though this was the first year for Girls’ division in UAAP, Shana Iniego, Jaja Ledesma, Stephanie Bello, and Tricia Raza bagged the bronze medal for the 4x100m relay while Iniego, Ledesma, Raza and Gelleen Esposo took home another bronze for 4x400m relay.

Pagadora, Charles Epino, Jerick Marquez, and Reinard Grimaldo won the bronze medal for the 4x400m relay Boys’ division.

Epino was also declared as the second runner up for the 400m sprints. Inni Domingo claimed the bronze medal in Shotput throw, Girls’ division.

Soriano, Abac prevail in UAAP77 walk events

Juniors Forth Soriano and Gyles Abac dominated the 3000m (3k) and 5000m (5k) walk events in the UAAP Season 77 Athletics competition held from December 6-10 at the PSC Track Oval in Pasig.

Soriano went home with the gold medal in the 3k walk and the bronze in the 5k. Abac, on the other hand, got the silver in both events.

Other members contributed to the UPIS Track and Field (TnF) team’s 148 points for a 5th overall finish this season.

Fellow juniors Charles Epino and Jasper Atela and seniors Raffy Oracion and team captain Rafael de Peralta beat out all but one on their way to a silver medal finish in the 4x400m event.

Epino also claimed a bronze medal in the 400m run.

Kim Gamboa and Michael Barbosa also made an impact by earning 36 and 14 points respectively from their events.

Fourth-year Miguei Abogado, a first-time member of the team, was ecstatic about his UAAP experience.

“Sobrang kakaiba nung experience, kahit first and last UAAP kong UAAP yun. Sobra akong nag-enjoy!” he said. “Kahit wala pala akong pinuntos sa team, nakita kong ginawa namin lahat ng best namin.”

De Peralta had a lot of positives to say despite the team failing to break into a podium finish this season.

“Kahit na hindi kami pumwesto at least nagawa namin lahat makapagPB (personal best) kami, magenjoy kami, nagfinals yung iilan sa amin, enough na yun para mapakita namin na kaya naming lumaban sa ibang malalakas, kaya naming makipagsabayan sa kanila,” said de Peralta.

“There is always room for improvement. ‘Di pa dito nagtatapos yung laban ng bawat isa sa amin, yung laban ng team. Ito pa lang yung simula,” he added. / by Andrei Vertudes

Sports: UPIS TnF aims high in UAAP 77

The UPIS Track and Field (TnF) Team hopes to surpass their impressive third place finish last season when they compete in the UAAP Season 77 Athletics competition from December 6-10 at the Philsports Arena (formerly ULTRA).

Even with the graduation of star runner and back-to-back MVP Jaime Mejia (Batch 2014), this year’s team captain Rafael de Peralta has high expectations for the team’s chances. He said that the team is young but it has a lot of potential.

Former UPIS TnF team member Renzo Domingo (Batch 2013) who is now one of the team’s coaches is confident about setting a goal for the team.

“Ang goal siguro ay mabeat yung mga personal bests nila (Maybe the goal is to beat their personal bests),” said Domingo.

The whole team is in high spirits and is in good shape upon entering the competition. They have been training hard everyday after class hours and have been participating in tune-up competitions to help them prepare for this year’s UAAP season.

“Makikita niyong handa kami (You will see that we are well prepared),” said de Peralta.

“Sasabak kami sa giyera nang may dala kaming bala (We will go into war with weapons locked and loaded),” said Paolo Bartilad, a member of the team.

As the team said, there is only one phrase that will describe their performance this season: “All out.”

UPIS students also have positive things to say about the chances of the TnF team.

“Babawiin nila yung nawala sa kanila (They will take back what they lost),” said Jediael Neri, a Grade 10 student.

“Sa tingin ko babawi sila (I think they will bounce back),” said Ella Santiaguel, a member of the UPIS Pep Squad.

Sports: UPIS TNF Walkers, claim podium finish in PATAFA

UPIS Track and Field Walkers Forth Soriano, Paolo Bartilad, and Michael Barbosa made an impressive Gold-Silver-Bronze finish in the 1000m walk event in the PATAFA competition held last November 15-16 at the Philippine Sports Commission Track Oval.

Soriano, Bartilad, and Barbosa were clocked at 5:10, 5:58, and 6:10 respectively.

Distance runner Kim Gamboa’s 10:32 in the 3000m run, and thrower Enrico Becoñado’s 9.76m in shotput event both added silver medals to the team’s medal pool.

Run Clinic Series, inilunsad ngayong Nobyembre

Naganap ang Run Clinic Series noong Nobyembre 8, Nobyembre 15 at Nobyembre 22 at matatapos sa Nobyembre 29. Pinamunuan ni UPIS Track and Field Coach Mark Reyes at Athlete Coach Ani de Leon-Brown ang programa. Libre at bukas sa buong UPIS Community ang Run Clinic Series na ito.

Ang nabanggit na gawain ang magsisilbing pangunang aktibidades ng UPIS Memorial Fun Run sa darating na ika-25 ng Enero ng susunod na taon. Ang malilikom na halaga ng Batch 1990 sa Fun Run na ito ay ilalaan sa konstruksyon ng Weights Area ng mga manlalaro ng UPIS. / ni Aemel Janae de Leon

The UPIS Track and Field (TnF) Team failed to get their fifth straight championship but still finished third in
this year's UAAP wars held from December 5 to 8, 2013 at De La Salle University in Dasmarinas, Cavite.

Jaime Mejia was again crowned as this season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) after getting 6 gold medals and 1 silver medal. He also beat 3 of his past finishing records—400 meter dash in 44.46 seconds, 400 meter low hurdles in 54.78 seconds and 200 meter dash in 22.60 seconds.

Jethro Esposo, Earl Mandapat and Jasper Navoa earned a total of 3 gold medals and 2 silver medals in individual events while senior Lorenz Bachini, junior Rafael de Peralta, sophomore Charles Epino and Mejia won gold in the 4x400 meter relay.

Feature: Jaime Mejia: A Role Model and Inspiration

The life of a student-athlete is never easy. They have to find time to study their lessons and finish their requirements. Besides these, they have to make sure their body is well-trained to do well in their sport. Moreover, they have to find the time to do the basic things like eating and sleeping healthy and maintaining good relationships.

Despite these challenges, our very own Jaime Mejia of the Track and Field team seems to rise to the occasion. He’s breaking records (UAAP 2012, 75th Season), winning school awards (Athlete of the Year, Parangal 2011-2013), joining international competitions (2013 ASEAN Youth Athletics Championships) and the list goes on.

It all started when he was in the 4th Grade. Originally, he planned to join the team once he was a high school student. But after finding out he could join at a young age he eagerly signed up for the team. Since then, he’s been giving pride to his school for winning in annual competitions like the Milo Olympics, Philippine National Games, UAAP, Palarong Pambansa and more.

Now a senior at UPIS, he is the team captain of the Track and Field Team. His team mates say that Jaime inspires them to train. “Binibigay niya lagi ang best niya at lagi siyang present sa training,” Jomike Gemora and Yzrael Dumaguing share in an interview.

Regarding Jaime’s inspiration and motivation to train, he says he wants to be internationally competitive. “Nalaman ko na marami pang mas malakas sa akin kaya kailangan ko pa mag-training ng mabuti,” he said when asked about his experience in the 2013 ASEAN Youth Athletics Championships in Vietnam, his first international competition. “Dapat never ako mag-settle,” he added.

Sometimes, you ask, “Are you even human?” and every time he laughs it off and says it’s all about sorting priorities. “Aral kung aral, train kung train,” he said.

When asked for advice for other aspiring student-athletes he said, “Humingi ka ng tulong kung kailangan mo, tapos dapat di mo kakalimutan ang studies mo at dapat mahal mo ang ginagawa mo.” / by Red Rivera

The UPIS track and field team defended their crown for the fourth consecutive time in the 75th Season of UAAP last December 4-7, 2012 at the Philsports Arena.

Jaime Mejia was crowned season MVP after getting 7 gold medals to lead UPIS to a blow-out victory after being down in the second day of the tourney.

Seniors Melvin Sangalang, Renzo Domingo, and Justin Monje collectively added 3 bronze medals and 2 silvers while Bryan Morales also quenched his thirst for a gold after rewriting the record books in the 4x100m and 4x400m relay with the help of Sangalang, Domingo, juniors Earl Mandapat and MVP Mejia.

This is an emotional and meaningful victory for the team especially for the 8 graduating players who have been to several division and national competitions, and have been training and competing with the team since they were in Grade 6. ● Aaron Lina, with reports from Miguel Flores and Benjomer Hernandez

Dashing Jr Maroons finish 4th in Milo Little Olympics

Members of the UPIS Track and Field Team raced to a 4th place finish at the Milo Little Olympics held at the Philippine Sports Complex on September 8 and 9.

Jaime Mejia of 9-Neon won the most medals for the team, getting a silver for the 110m hurdles, and two gold medals, for the 100m and 200m dash. Emerson Sandoval of 9-Argon also bagged bronze for shotput.

Lorenz Bachini, Dave Balacuit, Jomike Gemora, Jerome Natividad, Earl Mandapat, Robin Banta, Yzrael Dumaquin, Fryl Vicente, Renzo Domingo, Herwin lor, Rafael de Peralta and Jasper Navoa also competed in the said competition. ● by Red Bartolome, James Borja, Benjo Hernandez, and Christian Boro
