BABALA: Kung Mahulog Ka, Bahala Ka!

Kilala ng buong UPIS si Lino Licuanan.

Kung hindi niyo natanong, sikat ang estudyanteng ito hindi lang dahil sa kanyang katalinuhan, kayamanan, at nakapabangong katawan.  Ang pinakatanyag na katangian ng binatang ito ay ang kanyang malagong 6-pack abs na mas matigas pa sa tustadong tinapay mo.

Isa siya sa mga pinakasikat na miyembro ng Yakal Basketball Club (YBC), ginagamit daw ni Lino ang isport na ito upang mapanatili ang tigas at sigla ng kanyang katawan. “Eat your vegetables,” dagdag pa niya.

“Hindi biro ang maging katulad ko,” ani niya, “hindi ko na nga malaman kung biyaya o sumpa ang maging kasimpogi ko.”

Kasalukuyang nahihirapan ang binata sa kanyang pag-aaral bilang graduating student.  Hindi siya makapag-pokus dahil sa maya’t mayang pagtetext sa kanya – lalake man o babae.  Minsan nga ay muntikan pang ma-confiscate ang kanyang cellphone dahil sa pagtawag ng tagahanga na itatago natin sa pangalang “Edrylin”.

Nang makapanayam ang ilang estudyante, inulan pa rin ng papuri ang binata.  “Si Lino ay isang biyaya ng Maykapal sa lahat ng nabubuhay sa mundong ito,” komento ng ka-batch niyang si Andrew Pulumbarit, “halos siyam na beses na akong nahulog sa kanya ; Wala na akong nais pang baguhin sa katawan niya. Perpekto siya para sa akin.”

Tuluyan ngang kumakalat ng “Lino Fever” sa eskuwelahan.  Sa katunayan, sinubukan pa itong pagkakitaan ng kanyang mga kasamahan. “Sana nga mga pictures na lang ni Lino ang ibinenta naming sa function. Siguradong lalapgas ng 600% ang kabuuang profit namin!” sabi ng isang nakapanayam. 

Tunay na isang milagro sa lupa ang kagwapuhan ni Mr. Licuanan, pero kung inaakala niyo na ito lang ang kanyang maipagyayabang, nagkakamali kayo!  Maituturing siyang isa sa mga pinakamatatalino na miyembro ng kanyang kinabibilangang batch.  Kung hindi niyo natanong, nagagamit niya ang napakaraming termino sa biology bilang parte ng kanyang mga pick-up at pambobola sa kanyang mga inaakit.  Kailanma’y hindi pa siya nabibigo.

YBC rises through the ranks

Yakal Basketball Club (YBC), UPIS’ all-star basketball team, has won against all challenges since its founding last November 2013.

The team boasts of an outstanding 21-0 record, defeating highly acclaimed UPIS teams such as Solar Boys and Tropang Balugs. Their most recent victory against archrivals Narra Basketball Association (NBA) last Friday, 21-18, earned the YBC a spot in the history of UPIS sports teams.

Founded by Josiah Chua of 10-Yakal, it is composed of high-profile seniors Adam Lopez, Benz Nacpil, Luis Perez, Lino Licuanan, David Matabang, Sano Amante, and Erwin Hermosa.

The YBC’s prowess has caught the eye of local hottie Freddy Pajarillaga of 10-Ipil. “They’re really good,” Pajarillaga said, “I wish I could play as well as them.”

Pajarillaga expressed his intention to join the team, but his ball handling skills did not meet the YBC’s standards.

UPIS to elect new student leaders

The filing of the certificate of candidacy (COC) for the upcoming student council elections ended last Tuesday, March 4.

Students interested to serve in next academic year’s Year Level Organizations (YLO) and Kamag-Aral (KA) submitted their accomplished COC forms to the Senior Council (SC) which serves as the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

The campaign period started yesterday and will end with the Miting de Avance on March 11.

Elections will be held on March 13, 7:00 am for Grade 6 students and 12:00 nn for Grades 7 to 9. Official results will be released at 5:00 pm on the same day. Candidates may submit an appeal until 5:00 pm of March 14.

SC president Luis Raynon of 10-Yakal is hopeful that the next crop of leaders will make him proud.

“Sana tumulad sila sa ‘min,” says Raynon. “Or kung posible mas magaling pa.”

Sports: Aquino, Joves win gold at PSL meet

Pricila Aquino of 9-Sodium and Francheska Joves of 7-Jupiter and other members of the UPIS Varsity Swimming Team (VST) won medals and broke records during the 52nd Philippine Swimming League (PSL) leg last Sunday, January 26.

Aquino won a total of 7 gold medals in the girls 16-year old division for the 400m, 200m, and 50m freestyle, zoom Individual Medley (IM), 100m backstroke, and a PSL record-breaking swim in the 100m breaststroke, with a time of 1.22 minutes.

Her accomplishments also earned her the Most Outstanding Swimmer Award in the girls 16-year old division.

Joves also won gold in the girls 12-year old division for 100m backstroke, and silver for both 200m IM and 50m freestyle events.

NSTP students reach out to nearby public schools

For the second consecutive year, the UPIS National Service Training Program (NSTP) has teamed up with the UP College of Education to help promote literacy appreciation to students of public schools near Diliman.

The class, divided into am and pm sessions, visits the San Vicente High School and the Balara Elementary School respectively every Monday.

NSTP students started their field work last January 13. They assist and teach Grade 2 students who are struggling with their literary skills in order to make reading more fun and entertaining for the children.

They also help develop the students’ communication skills by conducting various activities such as magic shows and molding clay.

UPIS opens admissions for AY 2014-2015

The UPIS has recently started giving out guidelines and application forms for those interested in entering UPIS as Kinder (K) students for Academic Year 2014-2015.

The school will also admit ten (10) incoming grade 7 students and a number of students under the Varsity Athletic Admission System (VAAS) Program.

According to Prof. Portia Dimabuyu, head of the Admissions Committee, the Kinder Admissions Test (KAT) or readiness test for K applicants will be held from April 2-4 at the UPIS 7-12 grounds.

VAAS applicants will be required to attend try-outs for their respective sport one month before taking the grade 7 test together with other incoming freshmen on March 8, 2014 also at the UPIS 7-12 Building.
