Literary (Submission): To Save You From Tears

12/29/2014 09:20:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Last Christmas, you gave me your heart
I think that was your heart
Never mind, I'm pretty sure it was
But the point is that the very next day
I didn't give it away

Last Christmas, you gave me your heart
And I held onto it
I kept it close at all times
Never letting it out of my sight
I mean, how could I?
It was a present... all for me

Last Christmas, you gave me your heart
It made me happy
'Cause you made me happy
And it kind of only meant one thing
That I'm your 'someone special'

Last Christmas, you gave me your heart
And I thought, "what a brave thing to do"
"That was very sweet of you"
Looking back now though, and I'm sure even you know
Yours weren't the only heart I received

I treasured your heart
I treasured all the hearts
If I were to be honest though
I was a tad bit more fond of yours
It was the one that never grew tired

I treasured your heart
I knew how much it meant to you
You only had one, so no, I did not set it aside to rot
It was always in my hand
And I gripped it as tightly as I could

I treasured your heart
I gazed at it a lot
Throbbing, beating, sometimes palpitating
It looked lovely, felt great even
And it never failed to make me smile

I treasured your heart
I think it almost died a couple of times though
I can't bring myself to wonder why
But hey, it's still alive, just little roughened up
It'll survive...I think

This year, to save you from tears
I gave you the chance to run away"
God knows you deserved it
But I must really be something
Because once again, you've given your heart to me

isang regalo,

Literary (Submission): Isang Regalo

12/29/2014 09:14:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Christmas vacation na,
Hindi ko na siya makikita.
Ngunit gusto ko siyang pasayahin
Ano ang aking gagawin?

Ang hirap mag-isip
Kahit sa panaginip.
Lahat kasi sa kanya’y babagay
Kaya anong regalo ang dapat na ibigay?

Isang regalo,
Na magbibigay ngiti
Sa maganda niyang mukha
Kahit pa hindi ko siya makita.

Isang regalo,
Na magpapaalala
Na dito sa mundo
Sa kanya’y may nagpapahalaga.

Regalong kanyang maitatabi
Ng pang habambuhay.
Sana’y pakaiingatan niya
Ang regalong inialay sa kanya.

Regalong magagamit
At makapagpapasaya sa kanya.
At masa matamis na kung gagamiti’y
Ako’y kanyang maaalala.

Ang iyong kaligayahan
Ay aking kasiyahan.
Ang iyong ngiti
Ay ngiti sa aking labi.

* * *

Tapos na ang UPIS days
Bakasyon na naman
Ngunit akin pang hinihintay
Regalong kanyang nais ibigay.

Subalit paano kami magkikita
Kung tapos na ang pasukan?
Wala nang natitirang araw
Wala ng panahon para magregaluhan.

Aba, hindi pa pala
May lantern parade pa
Pupunta ako
At pupunta rin siya.

Habang palakad-lakad
Sa aki'y may biglang tumawag
Napalingon sa kanan
At sa kanya ay nagulat.

Isang regalo ang iniabot
Habang hingal pa sa paghabol
Aking tinanggap
At ako'y mabilis na nagpasalamat.

Simple
Ngunit alam kong pinaghirapan
Hindi man gaanong kamahalan
Ito'y aking nagustuhan.

Sa tuwing nadadaanan ng tingin
Ang regalong bigay niya
Lahat ay aking naaalala
Higit sa lahat naalala ko siya.

Literary (Submission): Hello and Goodbye

12/29/2014 09:09:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Goodbye to the fast pace of 2014
And hello to the much awaited 2015
Thanks for the memories that were worthwhile
And the ones that will never be forgotten

Goodbye to the regrets I had
To the moments I’d like to forget
To the times that were full of happiness
And the events I wished had ended instead

Hello to a new beginning
To a new chapter
To a hopefully less regretful year
And to a new me

But I wouldn’t like to forget everything
Because there is someone
Someone I wouldn’t like to say goodbye to
And that person is you

Even though memories can be so traumatic
They can also be so pleasing
There were so many times that I would just like to give up
But there is always something, an inspiration that stands in between

So here’s to a new year
With more smiles than frowns
More ups than downs
And more successes than disappointments

“Tara, G, Lantern tayo!” pagyayaya mo.

At….. one! “Mahal kita.”

Ano?

6. Earphones – Sakto, Pasko, maraming nangangaroling.

Kasi nga, tulad ng sabi nila, books can take you to many places you can only dream of going to.

Give love on Christmas Day, ika nga nila.

nina Macky Barrientos at Zita Pedragosa

Junior Maroons loses thriller game, drops to 1-6

12/29/2014 08:14:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

The UPIS Junior Maroons lost a close contest against the Adamson Baby Falcons, 56-50, to close out the first round of Season 77 with a 1-6 record last December 20 at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

Third year wingman Allane Barles led the charge for the Maroons with his 13-point output. Jaggie Gregorio and Bryan Lina provided support by adding 11 and 7 points respectively.

The Junior Maroons succumbed to the Baby Falcons’ hot shooting in the first half where they trailed, 30-18, at the halftime break.

Adamson extended its lead to 19 as they unleashed an 8-1 run with more than six minutes remaining in the third.

UPIS then bounced back and staged a furious 13-4 run to end the third quarter and close the gap at 36-45.

Both teams struggled to score in the first few minutes of the fourth and final quarter. Junior Maroons’ Coach Allan Gregorio was slapped with a Technical Foul in the 7-minute mark because of his violent reaction to a non-call on a missed Barles layup.

The Junior Maroons nonetheless were not fazed as the younger Gregorio sparked another spectacular run by the Maroons which brought them to within one, at 49-50, with around two minutes remaining.

That was the closest they could get, however, as the breaks of the game in the dying seconds went in favour of the Baby Falcons, thus securing their win.

The Junior Maroons has lost six straight games after winning their first assignment against UE.
The second round will resume on January 7, 2015 when they take on the DLSZ Junior Archers. / by Macky Barrientos and Julou Tirol

Soriano, Abac prevail in UAAP77 walk events

12/29/2014 08:09:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Juniors Forth Soriano and Gyles Abac dominated the 3000m (3k) and 5000m (5k) walk events in the UAAP Season 77 Athletics competition held from December 6-10 at the PSC Track Oval in Pasig.

Soriano went home with the gold medal in the 3k walk and the bronze in the 5k. Abac, on the other hand, got the silver in both events.

Other members contributed to the UPIS Track and Field (TnF) team’s 148 points for a 5th overall finish this season.

Fellow juniors Charles Epino and Jasper Atela and seniors Raffy Oracion and team captain Rafael de Peralta beat out all but one on their way to a silver medal finish in the 4x400m event.

Epino also claimed a bronze medal in the 400m run.

Kim Gamboa and Michael Barbosa also made an impact by earning 36 and 14 points respectively from their events.

Fourth-year Miguei Abogado, a first-time member of the team, was ecstatic about his UAAP experience.

“Sobrang kakaiba nung experience, kahit first and last UAAP kong UAAP yun. Sobra akong nag-enjoy!” he said. “Kahit wala pala akong pinuntos sa team, nakita kong ginawa namin lahat ng best namin.”

De Peralta had a lot of positives to say despite the team failing to break into a podium finish this season.

“There is always room for improvement. / by Andrei Vertudes

Tumilapon ako at nahulog

--------------------

--------------------

Isang oras, araw, linggo, buwan o taon; kahit humigit pa doon. Kahit maka-ilang maling ikot or liko pa tayo, huwag kang mag-alala. Hindi kita iiwan sa paglalakbay na ito.

Here I am again, walking home from school, walking the same damned alley across the same damned streets, crossing the same damned things. I have memorized this damned environment by traversing through this route hundreds of times.

In this route is a boulder. Not big enough to be conspicuous but not small enough to be moved by one person alone. This particular boulder is interesting because of the fact that it has been covered with so much graffiti that its face can no longer be seen clearly and each day, several more are added to it--names, swearwords, phone numbers. All the paraphernalia of faceless people I will never meet.

Each time I go home, there is not one time when I have not stopped by this rock, this memento of faceless, nameless people, waiting. Waiting for something, anything. But nothing happens. In a sense, the people who wrote on this rock are better off than I am. They will have legacies after they die while I will be the faceless nameless someone.

But for now, I keep on walking.

Feature: Clash of Clans: Unleashing the Warrior Within

12/05/2014 08:26:00 PM Media Center 1 Comments

Imagine yourself as a chieftain of a tribe or a village. You have builders whom you instruct to build Town Halls, Gold Mines, Laboratories, or even defensive walls and Archer Towers. You have your own Barracks where you train Barbarians, Archers, Wizards, or even Giants and Dragons whom you will then instruct to destroy another village either in search of loot or just to satisfy your hunger for war.

If you get chills down your spine just by thinking about these things, then Clash of Clans might be the perfect game for you.

Clash of Clans is a multi-player online mobile game that is played by millions of people around the world. It is extremely popular; garnering a total of more than 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store as of now.

The goal of the game is basically to make the strongest, most impenetrable village and at the same time, launch successful attacks on other villages.

Points, or trophies in this case, are gained when you successfully defended an attack or you have launched a successful attack on another village. For an attack to be deemed successful, you should have destroyed more than 50 percent of the enemy’s structure or have taken down the enemy’s Town Hall. Attacks are rated with three stars (100 percent) being the highest rating. The same goes for a defense to be deemed successful.

The game is already gaining popularity among UPIS students. A considerable fraction of the entire population of UPIS Students is already playing this addicting game.

Grade 10 student Greg Octa responded cheerfully when asked about his experiences playing the said game.

“Parang may kakaibang fulfillment kapag naka-three stars ka sa inatake mo (There is a unique snese of fulfillment when you get three stars in an attack),” said Octa.

So, what are you waiting for? Start playing and feel the taste of the Clash of Clans. / by Macky Barrientos

Even with the graduation of star runner and back-to-back MVP Jaime Mejia (Batch 2014), this year’s team captain Rafael de Peralta has high expectations for the team’s chances. He said that the team is young but it has a lot of potential.

Former UPIS TnF team member Renzo Domingo (Batch 2013) who is now one of the team’s coaches is confident about setting a goal for the team.

“Ang goal siguro ay mabeat yung mga personal bests nila (Maybe the goal is to beat their personal bests),” said Domingo.

The whole team is in high spirits and is in good shape upon entering the competition. They have been training hard everyday after class hours and have been participating in tune-up competitions to help them prepare for this year’s UAAP season.

“Makikita niyong handa kami (You will see that we are well prepared),” said de Peralta.

“Sasabak kami sa giyera nang may dala kaming bala (We will go into war with weapons locked and loaded),” said Paolo Bartilad, a member of the team.

As the team said, there is only one phrase that will describe their performance this season: “All out.”

UPIS students also have positive things to say about the chances of the TnF team.

“Babawiin nila yung nawala sa kanila (They will take back what they lost),” said Jediael Neri, a Grade 10 student.

“Sa tingin ko babawi sila (I think they will bounce back),” said Ella Santiaguel, a member of the UPIS Pep Squad.

The team hopes that the UPIS community comes out to cheer for and support them in their events this weekend. / by Macky Barrientos and Quiela Salazar

Literary (Submission): Maybe Someday (The Other Perspectives)

11/28/2014 09:01:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

(Read Maybe Someday here.)

I knew she would see us today as we were at the stone bench by the school gate. I don’t normally stay this late, especially not to hang out with you or your teammates. But I made sure my presence was felt more strongly today. I was feeling unintentionally rejected because despite my obvious flirtations, you were awkward, silent. Deep inside, I wished I left earlier.

* * *

But I had to do what I came to do. I purposely sat beside you. As close as the stone bench would allow. And animatedly told you about stuff I was certain you'd find interesting, hoping that even just for one bit, you would listen intently, that my scripted rehearsed conversation would merit more than a polite smile, which I knew wasn't even for me.

* * *

My plan worked! Word got around fast that there was something between us. And yes, I take all the credit. For after just weeks of texting you, talking to you randomly, spending time with you, making you -and most specially her- think that we were getting along really well (and were bringing back what we could have been in the past), you were under my spell. I don’t care what your friends say about me. I don’t care what she thinks. I know what I want. You.

* * *

But you. You weren’t buying my staged drama so I had to move on to phase 2. I leaned closer to you, hoping this gesture will bring you back to my show, bumped your shoulder playfully to catch your attention. And pleasantly, it caught hers, too. Surprisingly, you put your arms around me, and even if it was just for a split second, it was soooo kilig. I wanted to believe I succeeded. But you - her stare sent you the same feeling.

* * *

What is wrong with you? We look a lot better together than you and your telenovela loveteam! Can you blame me for liking you more ever since the idea of you getting along with somebody else, even as a joke, got around? So i had to let you know sooner that for the longest time, I've had my eyes only for you. That you have always inspired me, made me happy because of the little things you do. And deep inside, I have always wished for an 'us.'

* * *

So I made my move. Confident that you cannot resist my charm, my obvious flirtations, my sincerest feelings for you. My friends back me up saying we really look good together, that you’re slowly falling for me, that your littlest gestures speak a lot about what you are not saying, or cannot say, but I would definitely love to hear.
And so I asked you.

* * *

Though your emotionless smile hit my nerves and tugged at painful heartstrings, I know what I want. And I will make sure you realize that you are better off with no one but me. She doesn't like you. You do not have a chance with her. Why hold on to hot-cold uncertainties when I here I am, sure about what I feel about you?
I saw her walk past us. Not even a glance.
Admit it, it's over.
I tug you closer.
I saw you glance at her.
I smile.
I know I'll get you soon enough.

-----

I followed you as you walked to the school gate today.
You did not notice me. Perhaps I was too inconspicuous. Or you were just too engrossed with him, staring at you from far away.

* * *

I sat on one of the stone benches. From my vantage point, I could see him and her, flirting, obviously, and you, hurting inside.
I was more concerned with how you have been trying to deny what you really feel. The moment you learned from me that word was he and she were getting along well, I wanted to take the news back. I just needed to be honest, because you asked. You pretended you didn't care but everyday since, I know it bothered you.

* * *

She leaned closer to him. An obvious gesture to catch your attention. She bumped his shoulder. A desperate attempt to catch his. For he wasn't listening. He was talking to you silently. And you were to him, too. But I was having second thoughts if I should tell you that this was so.

* * *

We were study buddies. We tirelessly talk about algebra, functions and equations, physics, and all, until one day, you told me you were feeling unusually jittery and well, happy. I found out sooner that it was he who caused these. So I urged you to give it a try, give it a chance. Who knows, you and he, however from different worlds, are meant to be.

I was happy when you slowly accepted that it could be so. You were happier every time you gave me updates- a welcome break from the computations and memorizations we used to busy ourselves with.
When you suddenly stopped.

* * *

Did I say anything that hurt you? I swear I just wanted to be honest. You deserve someone who would treat you better than he who plays your heart. This way you would hurt less. But I guess I was wrong.

Is there hope that we pick up where we left off?

* * *

Today, seeing you bearing your hurt alone, I just wish we could talk Algebra and Physics again. I have not sent you any signal to save you from him. You never knew how long it took me to accept that getting hurt at your stories of him is the best, just to see you smile and laugh.
I looked as you walked past them.

You walked past me. No glance, too.

Now there is little chance that you will know it has always been you. / by Volturi

11/28/2014 08:45:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Unang subject kasi, tapos test agad.

“Get one and pass,” sabi ni Ma’am.

Lalo akong kinabahan at napaisip.

Ano ba naman ‘to? Ang hirap ng buhay! Hindi ko malaman kung anong pipiliin ko! Lapis o ballpen? Ballpen o lapis?

“Finished or not finished pass your papers.”

Ano raw? Wala akong nasagutan!

“USE A PENCIL FOR ANSWERING THE TEST.”

Iyan ang sabi sa whiteboard.

At tuluyan na nga akong umiyak. / ni Abril Mayo

Literary: Writing Letters

11/28/2014 08:35:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

With the changing times and passing generations
People always ask “Where is the chivalry?”
“Where is the love?”
To them I have one thing to say
Write letters.

When I was six, I wrote my first letter
It was signed ‘from your secret admirer’
Later on I was glad secret admirer remained secret
For he threw it out and laughed when I experienced my first heartbreak

When I was twelve, I wrote to my parents
“I know I haven’t told you this enough, but I love you and I am grateful to you.”
I guess I didn’t include “I’m sorry,” because they’ve already heard it many times before
And I didn’t have the courage to read aloud those two words in public anyway

When I was fourteen, I wrote to all the boys I loved before
Six in total (almost seven, almost)
From the one in white to the one in maroon,
From the one I “loved” when I was five to the one I almost did when I was thirteen

I wrote lots of times when I was fifteen
The first to a boy I would never see again
The second to the boys who would never know my name
And I wrote three apology letters for two wrong things I did
for when I was fifteen, I learned how to break the rules
and soon I realized that rules were there for a reason
and you weren’t supposed to break them

I’m almost sixteen and I realized now
Often we write letters when we want to receive love
We want to receive love, forgiveness, praise, acceptance, trust
But maybe the only person who needs to love, forgive, accept, trust us is ourselves

The chivalry is not lost
The love is not forgotten
My dear it is in us
If we just learned to read between the lines

Feature: Fire is Catching: Mockingjay Pt. 1

11/28/2014 08:18:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

dys•to•pi•a ( /disˈtōpēə/ ) – noun. an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.

It has been an ongoing fad in literature and movies to set a dystopian world as the premises for such. Opposite to its counterpart utopia, dystopia is often shown as a post-apocalyptic world, with strict rules and a totalitarian government. This theme in literature and popular culture has been going on since the 18th century, but is most notable in recent years, especially with the publication of the famed trilogy, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. Books tackling the same dystopian theme are slowly being made into movies one-by-one, but The Hunger Games kickstarted them all, and just last November 20, 2014, the second to the last movie in the franchise, Mockingjay Pt. 1, premiered in cinemas nationwide.

In the movie, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) tackles the obstacles thrown at her after escaping the 75th Hunger Games, then she copes with life at District 13 while making the choice on whether or not to be the face of the propaganda.

Mockingjay Pt. 1 shows us that everyone can make a difference. People are not invincible, and the people we thought to be perfect may be harboring similar problems as us. Katniss does not fail in showing us that she is the perfect heroine for this series, that she is strong, independent, brave, and most of all, true to her self.

Fire is catching! Make sure to catch Mockingjay Pt. 1, now showing in theaters nationwide. / by Raine Abaya

11/28/2014 08:15:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

The UPIS Junior Fighting Maroons are looking to improve their so-so performance last season. Tallying only a total of five wins out of fourteen outings, the UPIS Basketball team finished at sixth place.

Enzo Barraquias, this season's team captain, responded confidently when asked about their expectations.

“Expect muna ng Final Four, mga 6-7 wins siguro, tapos bahala na sa susunod (We expect to finish in the Final Four, around 6-7 wins, then we’ll see what happens next),” he said.

Other UPIS students also have high expectations for the Junior Basketball team.

“Magchachampion ‘yan! (They will be the champions!)” said student Paolo Gonzales, an avid fan of the Junior Maroons.

“Feeling ko nga eh, may chance na mag-improve, (I feel there is a chance that they will improve.)” said Trisha Serrano, a grade 10 student.

“Kayang pumasok sa top 5 (They can finish in the top 5),” said Paolo Bartilad, a member of the UPIS Track and Field team.

Since most of this season’s game will be played at the nearby Blue Eagle Gym, the basketball team is encouraging everyone to support and cheer for them.

“We invite everyone to watch our games this season at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym. Please support us,” Barraquias said.

No ID, No Entry” policy, strictly enforced

Due to recent reports of students losing their belongings, UPIS started implementing the No ID, No Entry policy last November 18.

A section of the UPIS student handbook states that the ID is part of the uniform and should be displayed at all times. It must be officially countersigned by the Librarian. The security guard at the gate is given the authority to refuse entry of students not wearing an ID.

This policy is being implemented to make sure that only UPIS students are able to enter the school’s premises.

Students were given a one-week grace period from November 11 to 13 to enable them to secure lost ID cards. / by Raine Abaya

DIFFERENCES
by Michael Tee, Jr.

You are a sunflower
That always faces the bright side of things
And you stand with the heat and light on your face

I am the mushroom
That looms in the shadows, hiding from everyone
And I lie in the damp cool ground within my caves

We are different from each other
Completely opposite
Together for now, but will soon part from each other

POLARITY
by Zero

You are water
That ripples in my mind
And splashes the rocks by the sea

I am oil
That can’t catch up with your greatness
And am slow but more intact

We are elements that aren’t for each other
Whatever we do we can’t be together
It would be better if we could
Just part ways. Forever.

APART

You are like the rainbow
That appears after the rain
And gives me hope for a better day

I am like the moon
That can never be with you
And always in the dark without you

We are like the sky and earth
That can never be together
But here I am, still hoping for the better

When you eat a blueberry
When you reread Casual Vacancy

I hope you remember me
When you go for a swim at the pool
When you wear Roshes and feel cool
When you drink like a fool

I hope you remember me
When you see the mural we painted
When you walk by the alley where we skated
When you drive by the shed where I usually waited

Because I remember you
When I listen to Eraserheads
When I lay still on my bed
When I remember the things you said

I remember you
When I see blonde hair
When I smell rain in the air
When I visit carnivals and fair

But I remember you the most
When I see your face
When I see that you’ve changed the pace
When I realize that you’ve forgotten me, left no trace

Literary (Submission): Anong Meron sa Pag-ibig?

Anong meron sa pag-ibig,
Kung nagmamahal ka
Di naman matumbasan.

Anong meron sa pag-ibig,
Kung nagmahal ka
Di ka na pala mahal.

Anong meron sa pag-ibig,
Kung sa simula mahal mo talaga
Siya pinag-aralan lang mahalin ka.

Anong meron sa pag-ibig?
Masasagot mo ba?
Maipapaliwanag mo kaya?

Anong meron sa pag-ibig?
Masasagot ko.
Maipaliliwanag ko.

Ang pag-ibig ay patas
Parehong kailangan matumbasan.

Ang pag-ibig nararamdaman
Di kailangang pag-aralan.

Ang pag-ibig panghabambuhay
Di nauubos, naglalaho.

Kung bibigyan mo ako ng pagkakataon
Sagutin sa harap mo ang tanong…
Anong meron sa pag-ibig?

IKAW.
