Literary (Submission): Dahil Sa'yo, MC!

Kilala mo naman ako,
Ako' yung kapag nagsulat ng kwento,
liham, sanaysay, o kahit ano pa,
'yung laging sa porma ng tula.

' Yung gamit ko na mga salita
ay pinipilit na may tugma.
Kung minsan ay swak ito,
at kung minsan ito ay malabo.
(Huh ano?)

Ang aking experience as an MC member.

At noong pub night, ako'y nagpuyat,

recommended naman without revisions ba't ganon?)

"Huy! Madaling ma-pub...pag gawa mo tula…"

Bakit ganon, di magkasundo,
ang mga Soc-Sci. tuwing peryodismo?
Ang iba'y nagsisi sa kanilang desisyon,
at tuluyan, sa inis at galit nalamon.

Ang MC2020 noong una ay walang pagkakaisa.
Magulo, walang identidad, at unti-unting nasisira.

SKL!!!

At tuluyan kong nadiskubre ang aking tadhana bilang isang Soc. Sci.

Road trip with friends muna sa summer!!!

Grado Labindalawa (Unang Semestre)

Ito yung tipong "ayoko na"
Kaso 'yun nga wala…
Huling taon ko na pala.
Kaya wala akong nagawa…kundi magsaya!

It's not you, it's me…I need time, let's take a study break muna…

And then I met her…

Masarap pala, at masakit pagkatapos…

Pakinggan…

Ang mga kanta ni Ben & Ben…

Anyways, ayun natapos na ang CETs.
At alam ko sa sarili ko na I tried to do my best.

Let's take a real break muna…

Pag nagsimula ang Pasko...

Grado Labindalawa (Pangalawang Semestre)

Dahil sa 'yo, MC, mas lalo kitang gustong balikan.
Dahil sa 'yo, MC, gusto kong bumalik sa kasipagan.
At dahil sa 'yo, MC, gusto kong pasalamatan,
ang lahat ng taong ako'y tinulungan.

Salamat kay Ria sa masasayang kuwentuhan.
Tungkol sa mga adventures niya tuwing in*man.

Kanyang trabaho natatapos niya, maski bakasyon.

At dahil sa 'yo…

At dahil sa 'yo…

Dahil sa' yo, MC…

...alam mo na yun!...

Literary (Submission): My Life, My Freedom

EDITED 1

My Life, My Freedom

I am Juan Dela Cruz. I wanted to go to school and study hard, play computer games and go partying, [Have some fun naman, if no, di na kita friend. >:(] graduate with honors [I am sorry, but it is your fault you failed to comply with my outrageous and irrelevant demands and expectations.], go to college and get a diploma [Due to the state of things, you will have to settle for a lower quality university, and you will have to go through the eye of a needle to get accepted.] , get a job as a doctor. [My children will be successful doctors like me.] [We do need more doctors], start a family [Lol, I think mas cool if you put this before the graduate part, dejk lang.] [Don’t you dare, I hear a single whisper about something like this, there will be consequences!] [We concur, we will shun you if you do so.].

High School
In my youth, I regularly irregularly [Those “unexcused absences” say otherwise.] attended classes in a fairly decent high school [Mej debatable pero sige.]. I barely studied diligently and eventually miraculously [The class was not that difficult, you were just lazy.] graduated [No awards? How can I call you my child when I was class valedictorian, and you did not even graduate with honors!].

College
I applied and took BS Biology because it was the best course to take with my career goal in mind my parents made me do so. I relented because it would give me an opportunity to get away from them. I wanted to get my life together and academically perform better now that I was in college, so I distanced myself from bad influences isolated myself from friends [Dude. it was just one party, come on, nothing bad happened. Tell you what, I'll introduce you to some “friends” I know you’d like]. College life was not as easy as I hoped it would be, the stress got to me I got lazy and I tried to find comfort in friends bad company. We studied together and were there for each other We hit bar after bar, and did several morally and legally questionable things. Good thing I was careful, my friends were not so lucky, some of them went to jail and/or became early parents. Due to my activities, I could no longer rely on my parent’s allowance, I was too ashamed to admit to them what I have been doing and ask for an increase. I told them I would get a part-time job to fuel my unhealthy lifestyle “help my finances”. That was the first time they said that they were proud of me.

Downfall
Unfortunately, this meant I had less time to study. I knew that if I did not get help I would fail. So I started meditating and exercising started abusing Adderall and Modafinil [Told you it would help you dude.]. to help me study.

Enduring Nightmare
Eventually, this cycle of hell ended, and [Hey now, college is important for you! You are better off this way than not.] I graduated. Little did I know, I would shortly go through another similar experience in earning my medical degree.

Placebo
After all my hardships, I finally became a doctor, albeit in residency. I thought mMy parents would be happy when I told them. The first question out of their mouths was, “After your residency, what country do you plan on working in? Don’t tell me you plan on staying here, you should make more money than I did, go to the States!”. I severed contact soon after.

Beginning of the End
I told myself, things will finally be better when I got my practice. I barely noticed it when it came. [Finally, now you can be an actual productive member of society! Good job.] Maybe I would now be happy when I met everyone’s expectations made a lot of money, when I got a big house, a fast car, or when I cared for others.

Peers: We had a lot of fun back then didn’t we? We had that 💯% lit 🔥 af life 👌😂. You sure you don’t want to hit the ol-regulars? It’s stressful being a doctor, you know.

Teachers: You were a mediocre student, at least now that you are a doctor, you are not completely useless. It’s nice to know we did not waste our time on you.

Parents: We agree with the teacher’s comments in that you were a mediocre student. it would’ve been preferable if you didn’t hang out with your so called “friends”. You should have listened to us! The money you make here is but a fraction of what you could have had in the States!

Society: Hey now, sure you had your downs, but frankly, I don’t care! Now, when can I expect you to be treating people and stimulating the economy?

Literary: Bagong Umaga

Gumising ka aking anak
At salubungin ang umaga
Nang may ngiti sa labi
Dahil sa wakas, ito na.

Kalimutan ang nakaraan
Ngunit tandaan ang mga natutunan.
Mga pagkakamaling nagawa noon
‘Wag mo nang ulitin pa.

Taas noo kang maglakad
Buong-pusong ipagmalaki
Na ika’y nagbago na
Para sa sarili at sa kapwa.

Ang mga umagang darating
Hindi na katulad ng dati
Ito’y mga bagong umaga
Hatid ay pag-asa.

Literary: Rebirthright

An end to the pain was assured
If one last torture was endured
The supposed final was not so
Some more you had to undergo

Big lies and untrue promises
Deception and injustices
A stab in the back and exploitation
Bitter deceit and vile treason

Open dialogue was pointless
Articulation was worthless
One does not talk terms with serpents
Fight not with words and arguments

Reject offers of olive tree and dove
True change will never come from above
Purge this corruption from the Earth
Fight hard and secure your rebirth

Literary: Hatinggabi Na

Siguradong ipapakita nito ang ating paraiso, My Dreams at Experiencing Fantasy. It’s a Mystery for the Best.

Literary: A Good Night's Sleep

Weak jaw locked open
Neck, strained, and mouth, gaping wide
Screaming with no voice

Blurry, dry vision
Lids closed shut to block darkness
Eyes tearless sobbing

A ringless ringing
Sound of an electric fan
Ears tightly held closed

Coagulated
Dry, irritated, swallow
Saliva in throat

Shadows bury body
Mind slips further into dreams
Surprising calmness

Sunrise has arrived
Body aches, pain all over
Awake, the mind is

Moist, the mouth is
Open, the ear is
Clear, the eye is
Raspy, the voice is

Hesitation, eliminated
Doubt, destroyed
Darkness, illuminated
Heart, reforged

Literary: Reincarnated

You do not need to empty that bottle behind your back
You do not have to weep another round beneath the early morning’s moonlight
You only need to turn to just one, most familiar face in your lifetime
Because I am here to pry your hands from yours if need be

You do not need to cry behind the backs of uncaring people
You do not have to mourn for the loss of things you never really desire
You only need to recognize what love offered’s true or not
Because what I deliver is real and alive, like you, through hardships ‘til now

You do not need to hide your smile through fake colored ones
You do not have to search the globe for anonymous mutual hearts
You only need to realize the other individual who has been with you all the time
Because I will never turn away, for we share the same blackened, but still hoping souls

I will be the songbird shaking your nightmares to replace happy dreams in reality
I will be the slumber you rely on in class and the waking call to the next
I will be the friend in your childhood and the lover from your future
You only need to ask once more for help and receive help in return

So please, talk to me with the voice that I truly know
Let me feel your trust in me while I extend back my support
And remember as we, together, go forth
That there is me, awaiting your reincarnation
And you, taking however many steps you need
To get to your prime again

Literary: The Ruby and the Emerald

As a student, I have always searched for gems. Not because of their precious appearance, but because of the invaluable meanings associated with them. Whenever I find one, I believe they represent my journey to becoming a better version of myself.

Six years ago, I was given the chance to look for such stones in two top universities. The first one is known for its sapphires. I was dazzled by the shiny blue sparkles – the nobility of the pious priests, the dignity of the scholarly students, the elevated social class of the rich kids. Since I wanted to regain the honor and high status I once enjoyed in my previous school, I was convinced to pay the 10,000-peso fee, no matter how expensive it was.

But there was a sudden change in the plan. The day before I was about to pay the enrollment fee in that university, I received a letter from another one I have not heard of. I was invited to collect the rubies and emeralds in that university. But I found the gemstones duller than those in the school I first applied for. The fiery glare of the rubies horrified me – the rowdiness of the protesters, the alleged alliance with disgruntled rebels. The grass-like emeralds, on the other hand, were disgusting – the low social status of the students, plus the lack of civilization of the buildings. Nonetheless, the dean told me that I did not have to spend anything – not even a centavo.

I could not decide where to look for gemstones. I did not really like the latter university because I thought that the students had no class at all and complained about the mundane. But I also had to listen to my parents – they told me that the school I wanted would teach me that social inequality and materialism are acceptable. In the end, I gave in, albeit grudgingly.

It was my first year. I felt like a complete reject in my new school. Almost everyone there told me that I was so burgués. Almost everyone there did not approve of my elitist attitude – bragging about achievements and looking down on the poor. Almost everyone there told me to stop pretending to live a fantasy and become more aware of the social realities happening around.

I would not do those, I insisted.

Day by day, I would tell my parents that I wanted to stop searching for those rubies and emeralds. I ranted to them that going there was not a good choice, and that I would have been more socially accepted in the other wealthier university. I begged them to let me enroll in that place where I could be one with rich, snobbish intellectuals and flaunt my flair.

Give it a second chance. Try again, they replied.

So during my second year, I tried to open my mind. I tried to befriend people who do not normally click with me. Those who dress simply, keep their offensive thoughts to themselves, and spend their money allowance prudently. They might not emit a sapphire-like sophistication, but at least they are humble and down-to-earth. Like the green energy emanated by the emerald. Not bad.

I also tried to engage in discussions about pressing issues. Those who complain about the exploitation of labor, expose the expanding neocolonialism of the US, and worry for worsening apathy of the youth. I might not agree with all of them, but at least they are critical and champion social awareness. Like the fiery fervor of the ruby.

By the end of eighth grade, my parents asked me again if I would still continue until the end of high school. I told them my sudden enlightenments – that my new classmates still have manners and social awareness. Going here... is not really bad at all, I admitted.

That meant I would continue looking for the ruby and the emerald for the next four years. I have changed – I have become more humble and tolerant of the differences of others. I have also educated myself of various social commentaries. But those are not enough to find the two gems. In fact, I still have met a number of frustrations even today.

I have not yet found the emerald – the deep, harmonious connection I have yearned. To admit, I still come across as unwelcoming to a lot of people because I want to look dignified all the time. I have always thought that asserting myself and not tolerating nonsense would command respect to others. However, that intimidated them. That also prevented me from revealing my insecurities, finding common ground, and relating with them. As if I had to set aside my fixation on self-regard just to do so.

I have also not yet found the ruby – the burning spirit of the protesters. Honestly, I still have second thoughts about my school's tradition. I appreciate that student-protesters want to elicit a message – a message so powerful enough to alert the entire minds of the preoccupied. But most of the protests fail to initiate action from the masses. The message is just left there, but that does not translate to solving all the issues covered. As if I had to think that rallying is one-hundred percent effective just for me to join.

It has been six years since I started my search for the two gems in my school right now. But I am not giving up. I still have a few more months to make the most of my high school, confront my frustrations, and fully imbibe in the red-green spirit of my school. In that way, I will become what I aspire to be – a better version of myself.

Literary: Kolehiyo? Kolehiyo.

Literary: Alaala

Magdiwang! Magsitalon!
Nagsimula na naman ang bagong taon!
Ngunit bago natin talakayin

At tila ba'y may katabi kang malaking pusa
At ikaw ang hapunan niya

Iilan lang ito sa mga ala-ala
Na ating pinagtatawanan at kinatutuwa
Ngunit ang hindi nahahalata
Ang mga ito ay may aral pala

Mga aral na maaari nating gamitin
Sa mga pagsubok na paparating

Kaya't sana ngayong bagong taon
Tayo ay magsibangon
Katamaran ay huwag gawing baon
Kahusayan ay ating ilayon!

Literary: About Time

Journal Entry #20
01.01.2020

New year, new day, new me.

I can’t believe it’s my final year in high school. I’ve been going to the same school, which I treated as my second home, for the past 13 years, and now, in a few months, I’m leaving. Time flies by so fast! I remember when I took my test here and how clueless and weird I felt when my parents were almost crying with joy because I passed and qualified for UPIS. They were more excited than me, and I thought it was just another school for another year.

On my first day, I immediately made friends with most of the class. In third grade, I knew each and every one of my batch mates and spent the whole of elementary getting to know them. By the time we’re all in high school, we were all so close despite having different circles of friends. I made some great group of friends.

In high school, I had a hard time because I chose a strand I’m not very good at. I had a hard time keeping up with submitting the requirements, and sometimes not even doing them. There were a lot of nights when I broke down and cried myself to sleep, or literally had no sleep at all. I would just cry until it was time for me to wake up and get ready for another day at school. But on the other hand, I was really thankful for being a part of this team I’m currently on because I learned a lot of new things and I developed more of my skills in this field. It was a great, sometimes bumpy, ride with y’all, MC 2020, and I couldn’t ask for better colleagues.

Yours truly,
Orange Popsicle, MC 2020

Literary: Media Center

Literary: A Special Gem

I’ve been in MC for several years now,
And I must say that it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.

I chose to be part of MC because I know I’d learn a lot from it. In addition to this, it’s the clooooosest strand to the course I’m interested in. At first, I’ve received rejections, wake-up calls to improve, and failures. It was hard but I know it’s a way for me to improve.

Time went by and I noticed how much I’ve grown. I realized that MC is not just an environment for work, but a family. A real real real family.

They’ve witnessed me cry, feel angry or happy... and they’re always... there. 🙂

Now that we’re graduating, a special message goes to you, MC.

You will always be a special gem to me. No matter how many times I fell from this journey, I’ll always come back to you. So, MC, I’ll never forget you. You were one great journey.

Literary: Autonomy Over Anatomy

I don't feel like I own the body I've been given
It has been carved not in the way I want it to be
Even if I tailor it the way I see fit
My body still could not match
This soul that dreams to dance

As I gaze upon the mirror I'm greeted by the sight
Of a short stature with thick bones and
Of skin draping a little too tight
Around layers of disproportionate muscles and bones
Cruel reminders that I could never achieve
The lithe aesthetic that defines ballet

I watch other dancers with a mixture of reverence and jealousy
As I know I'm way too far from being like them
Next to their elegant precision, I am a blur of motion
If they are the embodiments of ballet's ethereality,
I am the lack of it

I wonder how easy it would have been to move as enchanting as them
If I had even just a fraction of their perfect bodies
But on stage, where it should have only been
Me and the music in harmonious concert
I become lost as I feel the discouraging look of the director upon me
A look that seared through my hopes in dancing

My spirit drowns further into the depths of dismay
As another barrier presents its way to set me off course from my goal
A foot injury, caused by too much weight on my toes
Becomes a weight on my shoulders
Shoulders that are too high and tense
There's tension in my movements that makes me look
As if I'm carrying a burden on my chest
The chest which I wish were more prominent
But was already too protuberant for ballet

I've learned to hate this body
But no matter how much I physically burn myself out
No matter how less I eat
I couldn't change this flawed body

Since then I've spent my days in cycles of
Dancing, aching, drowning
Dancing, aching, hoping
Dancing, aching, trying

I tried to pursue other art forms
But my heart keeps on finding its way back to dancing

What am I supposed to do with this stubborn heart?
What am I supposed to do with this misplaced soul?

All I know is that I could no longer hold
My dreams by the chains of excuse
So I would dance despite the limits of my soul's shelter
I would dance and let no one take that gift away from me

Let the wind of hope set its course unto the embers of my passion
Let these embers catch the flames that once kindled in my heart
And let my heart outshine my body's capabilities

The world may throw its toughest rocks upon my path
But I will be ready to chassé back to my journey
Towards the solace in dancing

Literary: I Am Not Dead

I am not dead
Merely subdued
To a state of reality
Far from all of you

I am not dead
Maybe only dimmed
To a somber place
where I continue to live.

And here, I am not dead.
I will continue to thrive.
Only possibly softened
But definitely alive.

I patiently wait
For storms to come through
For fire to burn out
For the world to turn anew.

But for now, I am not dead.
Not dead yet.
Wait for me all,
my return has been set.

Literary: In the Graveyard

Lifeless beneath where the earthworms slither
Below the grainy dirt, sand, and mud
Among all the grey, grassy muck of the world
Where rotting scents fill the unfeeling air

I lay

Underneath a mossy stone slab
With my name engraved in black and gold
A casket of ebony cradles my body
And shuts me from the rest of the world

I start

With my bones, which once were withered
Now sprouting nerves and tendons and fat
Muscles wrap around my once frail bones
Gripping it and never letting go

I hunger

As my stomach and intestines start to form
It fills and colors my insides anew
Though filled to the brim, I thirst and I hunger
For the world beyond my self-inflicted walls

I feel

On my muscles, my skin takes shape
And the cold of my prison penetrates me
As I feel the blood flow from every crevice
Down to my pinkish fingertips

I awake

To see that what I used to be exists no more
I feel both more and less of the world
And I find myself to be littered with scars
But they don’t hurt as much as they used to before

I push

My casket which kept me locked away
And the earth which used to weigh down on me
Can’t hold me back as I breathe again
My hand reaching out to be free again

I live

All that used to be-- I now forgive
Beware for I have finally unearthed
But fear not for though I am not the same
I’m not undead, for at last, I’m reborn

Literary: The Little Floret

A dainty, little flower stands in the middle of the field.

A tad bit quiet yet she glows from afar.

With the wind, she sways and she bends and she shakes.

Day by day, she lives in oblivion,

For unbeknownst to the little blossom, several spectate her beauty from afar,

As with the wind, she sways and she bends and she shakes.

Although she is beautiful and beloved by many,

she is but an ephemeral plant, and gets worn out

as with the wind, she sways and she bends and she shakes,

One sunny day, like any other

All of her beauty and her grace finally wither away,

As for the last time, she sways and she bends and she shakes.

Her once precious petals, her leaves and her stem,

Slowly decay on the ground she used to stand upon,

And serve as remnants and echoes of her former beauty.

With the passing of time, the memory of her slowly starts to fade

From the hearts and the minds of her former admirers,

Reduced to but a distant dream, a fervent longing they once had.

But one sunny day, unlike any other,

In the patch of land where she used to be,

A wonderful sight had materialized into being.

A tiny bud, one that in color, in beauty, and in elegance,

Is strongly reminiscent of the beloved, dainty flower,

Can now be seen in the middle of the field.

And as we all know, the little floret, as youthful as can be,

Will then be loved and adored as the flower before her,

As with the wind, she’ll sway and she’ll bend and she’ll shake.

Literary: Changing Seasons

Butterflies flew from all over,
With the news of spring’s first flower,
Soon there was I, a little bud.
An eager little sprouting gaud.

My giddy sisters sprung one by one,
Ready to welcome the big bright sun.
I didn’t know about anything,
But sure, was to conquer everything.

The buzzing bees came by me and said,
You’re the pinkest bud we’ve ever seen!
Flattered, I spread my petals proudly,
Of course!
No one has ever witnessed such beauty!

For the rest of the season of spring,
I bathed with sweet sugared water,
Misted with perfume every morning,
In the evening slathered with butter.

Summer came, and to no one’s surprise,
Amongst all the flowers, with no ties,
Blooming and swaying right with the wind.
With my beauty, others were outshined.

But with summer came the nasty heat.
Every flower darkened its petals,
So that they would not be burned alive,
To be able to live, so did I.

And then Fall came with ravaging strength.
It dried my roots and wilted my petals,
All the other flowers were shedding,
To be able to live, so did I.

The field was people packed in winter,
Taking pictures with us pink flowers.
Rows and rows of us were trampled on,
So, I grew thorns to keep them at bay.

Lost and weary at the season’s end,
All the hardships truly made me bend,
Taken, the beauty that nature lent,
Needn’t all of this obstacle sent?

Grieving over the loss of beauty,
An epiphany came over me.
Had these dull petals and thorns not come,
I wouldn’t survive the seasons’ wrath.

Literary: Déjà Vu

It's surprising to see how I'm staring at the bottom of this escalator again here in the mall downtown where my mother used to take me out shopping.

This grid pattern of the metallic ridges on the landing plate still feel cold to the feet despite wearing leather shoes. Back when I was seven, I'd wait a while just to feel the vibrating sensation below me, eyes closed, before my mother grips my hand tighter to pull me into the escalator's steps. Now it's just me, wallowing at the sight of the yellow outlines of the rising metal steps appearing in front as I slowly, delicately grab onto the comfy rubber handrails. And the force of the machine drives me forward to take a step.

Slightly wobbling and out of balance, I composed myself to stand up straight while staring at the line of retail stores with flashing colors to my right. Snapping to the left, I see faces going down opposite of my direction. Familiar faces. Faces of my two childhood friends, the bully back in elementary, my grandfather, the postman who came by every Sunday, my first girlfriend, our homeroom teacher, my mother. It's funny, it's been a while. A long while.

I looked at my hands; they couldn't reach the handrails anymore. I shrunk. I'm a child again.

A teardrop trickled ever so slightly, before it hit the ascending step below me. I looked back up to the top of the flight. Somebody must've installed a trash can between the parallel escalators after I left town, though I do recognize the potted plant across it to the right still standing tall. I fixed my collar and stepped out of the escalator with perfect timing. As I pictured, the good ol' upper floor looks the same; yet something felt different and new. I let out a hefty sigh.

Literary: Rebirth?

Even though to others we are seen as silly,
oneself mustn't be kept shyly.
For confidence makes us lovely,
and true beauty goes well with honesty.
Because a rebirth is not necessary
to become who you want to be.

Someone who is happy…

With their life...daily
